    Dark Cave & Chay River

    August 14, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

After lunch, we continue the trip to discover Dark Cave, a deep cave connecting to Chay River. Here, once again you use zip-line, then go inside the dark cave to enjoy floating mud, then the other water games on the Moc Spring.

Dark Cave was discovered in 1990 and not long after that it was exploited as a tourist discovery destination. Chay River flows around Dark Cave. It is called Dark cave because this is a closed cave. Except for the two cave entrances, there are no other exposed spots, no light gets in, meaning all activities are in the dark, relying only on flashlights and helmet lights.

Hope the activities here gave you a good impression and memory. And this time, Bi gave Chay river a new glasses as a present.

Latitude 17 and Hien Luong Bridge

    August 15, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

After 2 days playing with rivers and caves in Phong Nha, we say goodbye to a cute homestay & Son river and continue heading to the south. Today destination is Hue City.

On the way to Hue, we can't help stop in Quang Tri heroic city where latitude 17, Hien Luong Bridge and Quang Tri Citadel taught you a historical lesson.

Hiền Lương Bridge (Vietnamese: Cầu Hiền Lương) is a bridge over Bến Hải River, Vĩnh Linh District, Quảng Trị Province, North Central Coast, Việt Nam. This bridge is located in 17th Parallel and in Vietnam War, it was bisected between South Vietnam and North Vietnam (DRV) from 1954 to 1976. American bombs destroyed the first Hien Luong Bridge in 1967 and again destroyed it in 1970. In 1973, an iron girder bridge was built and reopened following reunification in 1975. The current bridge was built in 1999.

Hien Luong bridge, being located at the military border of the war, witnessed symbolic and propaganda conflicts between the two sides of the war. Both South Vietnam and North Vietnam deployed huge speakers with high power to broadcast their message as far as possible. Moreover, whenever the South Vietnamese repainted their part of the bridge, the North Vietnamese also repainted their part with the very same color, to signify their will to unify of Vietnam nation.

    Quang Tri Citadel

    August 15, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 36 °C

After Hien Luong Bridge, at 12:00 noon, the heat killed us when we came to Quang Tri Citadel.

According to documents, at the beginning of emperor Gia Long's reign, Quang Tri citadel was constructed in the Tiền Kiên ward. In 1809, wanting to secure the North of the then capital Phú Xuân, the emperor ordered to move the citadel to Thạch Hãn commune (the present location), which he deemed a position with strategic advantages in terms of politics, economy, and military.

The citadel is mostly remembered as the site of the Second Battle of Quang Tri in the country's resistance against the United States during the Vietnam War.

You can refer further information on Quang Tri Citadel thru this site https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quảng_Trị_Citadel.

We also remember the lunch at a small street restaurant right outside the gate of ancient citadel, where Noah decide Banh nam & Bun thit nuong dishes are the best food Noah has ever taken in Vietnam.

    Hue Royal Tombs

    August 17, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

As the Old Capital where the Nguyen dynasty ruled, Hue hides the fascinating royal tombs which reflect the kings' temperaments, philosophies, and priorities.

The tombs are the place for the kings to relax while alive and to bury them. Exploring these spectacular architectures, tourists will discover that the tombs not only embody the lives and souls of the Nguyen Kings but also recount the story of one of Vietnam’s most engrossing historical periods, including national unification, military conquest, and the cultural impact of French colonialism. Out of 7 tombs in the city, Minh Manh and Khai Dinh Tombs are 2 among 3 most renowned ones.

    MINH MANG TOMB

King Minh Mang is the second ruler of the Nguyen Dynasty who governed southern and central Vietnam from 1820 to 1840. Minh Mang King had appointed design and location himself, the tomb was built mostly by his successor and son – Thieu Tri King from 1840 to 1843 since Minh Mang had passed away in 1841. Set along the Perfume River, the burial site comprises 40 structures, including a building for the emperor’s clothes, pavilions for mourners, and the tomb itself. The bright colors, elaborate ornamentation, and lacquered finishes on the buildings contribute to the site’s elegance and beauty.

    KHAI DINH TOMB

Emperor Khai Dinh ruled the country for 9 years from 1916 to 1925. Under Khai Dinh, Western culture vigorously infiltrated into Vietnam. Khai Dinh himself made a tour to France in 1922. As a result, his tomb is the blend of the western architecture and the nation’s traditional art.

In comparison with other tombs, Khai Dinh surface area is much smaller than his predecessors. However, the building is much more elaborated than others of it era. It is a rectangular block leaning against Chau Chu mountain. To get to the main palace, you will have to climb 127 stairs. The steps leading up to the forecourt are guarded by four dragons, which creates an imposing scene for the tomb. In front of the palace, there is a concrete stele monument written by his son – Emperor Bao Dai. Besides, there are also stone statues including the King’s bodyguards, mandarins, elephants, and horses.

Inside Thien Dinh palace, visitors will see the appearance of many different schools of art, most affected by Western architecture. The tomb is decorated with precious furniture from all over the world. Most of the decorations are made of porcelain and crystal. There are also some of Emperor Khai Dinh’s personal stuffs such as a gold chair, photographs of his life and other countries’ tributes. The most impressive art of the tomb is the ceiling of the palace. It is decorated with the picture of nine intricate dragons. Besides, there are also copper statues carved an image of Khai Dinh King standing and sitting.
