      So long, farewell...

      After deciding 2024 would be our last year sailing in the Mediterranean, we have accepted an offer and sold Sea la Vie. We had hoped to sail again but now we are sorting and packing our belongings. It's incredible the amount of stuff we have squirreled away on 37 feet!
      Our plan now is to drive around the Peloponnese, ferry hop to the islands, perhaps take a jaunt to Istanbul and maybe rent a boat for a week or so. It will be a different sort of adventure but I'm sure full of beauty, challenges, education, frustrations, enlightenment, joy, and perhaps, with fewer moments of terror, although Bob's driving of a standard car is somewhat rusty and does not eliminate the threat of running aground!!

      Preveza

      Gestärkt nach leckeren Nachtessen von meiner Vermieterin (es war sowas ähnliches wie eine griechische Lasagne😅), machte ich mich heute morgen auf den Weg nach Preveza. Der Weg führte etwas durchs „Landesinnere“, wobei es aber immer wieder sensationelle Blicke auf die einsamen Buchten gab. In Preveza gab es dann einen Quitschi-Käse-Salat, bevor ich mich den restlichen Tag am Strand erholte. Morgen geht es dann rüber zur Insel Lefkada, welche vo Preveza nur durch einen Unterwasser-Tunnel erreichbar ist. Dieser ist jedoch für Fussgänger und Velos gesperrt, mal schauen wie ich dieses „Problem“ morgen früh löse.🤪Read more

      Winterlager 2. Woche

      So. 03.03.24 Winterlager Marina Bericht 2. Woche
      Die ganze Woche begleitete mich meist schönes
      Wetter mit gelegentlich einigen Wolken.
      Die Temperaturen sind schon angenehm warm.
      Am Morgen 8:00 ca. 15° und Tagsüber bis 25°.
      Auch diese Woche sind einige Arbeiten und
      Projekte angesagt.
      Zuerst ersetzte ich den Aktivkohlefilter für die
      Wasseranlage, welche unter dem Waschbecken
      montiert ist.
      Ein für mich wichtiger Besuch hat sich
      angemeldet. Dimitris und Spiros, Raymarine
      Spezialisten, kamen pünktlich um 10:00.
      2. Probleme mussten eruiert und behoben
      werden.
      1. der Autopilot funkt. nicht mehr.
      2. der Radar konnte nicht mehr gestartet
      werden.
      Schon bald, nach messen der Kabel und div.
      Funktionstests, konnte der Übeltäter gefunden
      werden. Leider wurden meine Tests, Messungen
      und Befürchtungen bestätigt. Die Steuereinheit
      ACU-400, hat den Geist aufgegeben. Ein nicht
      gerade billiges Teil.
      Das Ausbauen des Gerätes (siehe Fotos) war eine
      kleine Herausforderung und benötigte gelenkiges Können.
      Das Gerät wird mitgenommen, um eine ev.
      Reparatur nicht auszuschliessen.
      Beim defekten Radar, welche die Herren in 5 Min.
      eruiert hatten, hätte ich mir die Haare ausreissen
      können. Habe ich doch im Voraus alle
      vermeintlichen Kabel und Anschlüsse überprüft,
      ausser eben die eine Dachluke, welche ich
      Übersehen hatte. Dort fand sich der Übeltäter.
      Ein Kabelanschluss war defekt. Also ein kleines
      behebbares Problem mit grosser Wirkung.
      Auf dem Plotter erscheinen wieder die mystischen
      gelb-roten Signale.
      Da sich das Wetter sehr angenehm und beständig
      präsentierte, stellte ich eine Baugestell auf um der
      AMBIRAMUS wieder zum Glanze zu verhelfen.
      Polieren ist angesagt.
      Mit der notwendigen Poliermaschine, bei welcher
      die Umdrehungen angepasst werden kann, ging es
      schon bald los.
      1. Gelcoat reinigen. (Roststreiffen, Kalk, etc.)
      Bearbeitungsbereich mit Abeckband
      begrenzen.
      2. Poliertur auf den Schwamm auftragen
      (Punktweise) und mit wenig Umdrehungen
      (500) auftragen.
      3. mit Microfasertuch reinigen.
      4. Glanzpolieren mit ca. 1500 – 2000 Umdreh.
      5. Schlussreinigung.
      Am nächsten Morgen erfreuten mich die beiden
      Raymarine Spezies wieder mit ihrem Besuch.
      Zwei sehr angenehme und professionelle Typen.
      Leider konnte die Steuereinheit, infolge
      Wasserschadens, nicht mehr repariert werden.
      Div. Kontakte sind oxidiert. Woher das auch immer
      kommt?
      Also bauten Sie die Neue ein und kalibrierten den
      Autopiloten. Hurra, es läuft wieder einwandfrei.
      Für einen, der zwischendurch immer wieder mal
      allein unterwegs ist, ein unentbehrliches
      Hilfsmittel.
      Vielen Dank an Dimitris und Spiros von
      PHAROS MARINE ELECTRONICS, Lefkada
      Die nächsten Tage wird immer wieder weiter
      poliert.
      In der Zwischenzeit, nach mehrmaligen
      Nachfragen, wurde mir die reparierte Genua
      angeliefert. Es musste die UV-Beschichtung
      erneuert und neu genäht werden. Gemäss dem
      Überbringer war es «lot of work».
      Während einem erneuten Einkauf in Preveza
      wurden die beiden Propeller und die
      Antriebswellen und Opferanoden, der Saildrives
      abmontiert.
      Es werden die Simmerringe und Opferanoden
      ersetzt und ev. die Laufflächen erneuert.
      Ich bin gespannt, was für Arbeiten nötig waren.
      Am Abend verirrte sich ein wunderschöner
      Wellensittich auf die Ambiramus. Was für eine
      freudige Überraschung.
      Der entspannte Wellensittich, sass leicht
      aufgeplustert auf der Front Railing. Sobald ich
      mich näherte und die anfreundete Hand nach ihm
      ausstreckte, lief er aufgeregt hin und her. Beim
      Necken mit ein paar Kernen, konnte ich ihm ein
      kurzes Interesse entlocken. Schliesslich entschied
      sich mein lieber Gast, seine Reise fortzusetzen und
      verschwand in der Weite des Himmels. Doch sein
      kurzer Besuch zwischen den Masten der
      Segelschiffe wird noch lange in Erinnerung
      bleiben, als ein Moment der Harmonie zwischen
      Natur und der menschlichen Schöpfung,
      eingefangen in der Schönheit eines einzigen
      Fluges.
      Am Samstag habe ich das defekte Lazybag
      abmontiert.
      Dazu musste zuerst das Grosssegel hochgezogen
      werden, um die Gleitschlitten aus der
      Mastschiene lösen zu können. Bei leichtem
      Seitenwind drückte es das Gross auf die Seite. Da
      ich alleine hantierte, bedarf es einiges an Tricks
      um das Segel runterzulassen und gleichzeitig an
      Ort abzulegen. Aber alles Gut, hat einigermassen
      funktioniert und so konnte ich das Lazybag
      abmontieren und aus der Mastfuge lösen.
      Der Marina eigene Chandler wird das Lazybag zur
      Reparatur weiterleiten. Ein angenehmer und

      Winterlager 4. Woche

      So. 17.03.24 Winterlager Bericht 4. Woche
      Ein Schwank aus dem Seglerleben.
      Zu Beginn der Woche durchquerte eine
      Gewitterfront unsere Breitengrade. Der starke
      Regen und die heftigen Böen sorgten für eine
      unruhige Nacht an Bord. Das Grosssegel, das ich
      nach dem Abbau auf dem Dach festgebunden
      hatte (offenbar nicht fest genug), blähte sich
      aufgrund des Nordwinds, der frontal auf uns
      zukam. Inmitten von Dunkelheit, Regen und den
      gespenstischen Blitzen, die den Horizont erhellten,
      stand ich im Pyjama auf dem Dach und befestigte
      zusätzliche Leinen, um die Situation unter
      Kontrolle zu bringen. Durchnässt, aber glücklich
      viel ich danach wieder in einen tiefen Schlaf.
      Bei dem neu entdeckten Stauraum, für den ich
      eine Inspektionstür eingebaut hatte, stellte ich
      fest, dass eine sinnvolle Benutzung nur möglich
      wäre, wenn ich ein Brett einbaute, um die
      Ablageboxen zu fixieren. Dies erwies sich als große
      Herausforderung da der Platz so begrenzt war,
      dass es schwierig war, sich zu bewegen. Mit nur
      einer Hand zur Verfügung, um die Aufgabe zu
      erledigen, war es notwendig, das Brett mit dem
      Kopf zu fixieren. Aufgrund des begrenzten Raums
      verschob sich das Brett jedoch ständig, was
      mehrere Versuche erforderlich machte.
      Trotz dieser Schwierigkeiten konnte die Aufgabe
      letztendlich erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden.
      Ich liebe diese Herausforderungen.
      Das heutige Wetter, bzw. Windstärke, erlaubte es
      mir die reparierte Genua wieder zu installieren
      und hochzuziehen.
      War nicht unbedingt einfach wenn man alleine an
      Bord ist. Not macht erfinderisch. Mit Geduld und
      der elektrischen Ankerwinsch hat es TipTop
      funktioniert. Schön breitet die Genua jetzt wieder
      ihr Segeltuch aus.
      Für den Schweizer Flaggenschein, für welchen ich
      eine Expertise eines Experten brauche, habe ich
      schon mal alle Kabinen auf Vordermann gebracht.
      Der erste Eindruck ist ja immer entscheidend.
      Kleinere Reparaturen im Gelcoat sind auch
      angesagt. Bei günstigem Wetter hilft der Kärcher
      das Oberdeck einer gründlichen Reinigung zu
      unterziehen. Generell sind jetzt laufend
      Reinigungsarbeiten angesagt.      Read more

      Archeological sites

      We are still living on the boat which is on land in the marina. We are amidst the millions of dollars worth of boats of all sizes, shapes, and styles. There are a number of people working on their boats including the Australian couple we met last year in Sarande! Behind us is a South African couple. Apparently only a fraction of the boats will actually get put in the water!
      I enjoy being on the boat even though we have to climb up and down a ladder to use the facilities. The birds sing to us morning and night. There's even one making a nest in the boom of a neighbour's boat! Herons fly overhead. The sunrises and sunsets are lovely and the weather is beautiful . We'll stay on-board until all is finalized. In the meantime, we're driving around the area visiting historical and archeological sites. The countryside varies from craggy scrubby mountains to lush farmlands, groves of olive trees, lemon trees, wetland marshes, rocky gorges and the blue Mediterranean.
      Even though Bob is no longer a Captain of this ship, he still putters around, climbs down the "hole" and checks the sails. It was to my detriment when he swung the boom over as I climbed up the ladder and CRACK - my head! I won't miss the bumps, lumps and brain bruises (as Nick calls them)!In spite of my lumpy head, we set off to visit Nicopolis, a city founded in 29 BC by Octavian in commemoration of his victory in 31 BC over Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. We walked amongst the ruins and marveled at the remains. The theatre was next but it could only be viewed behind a fence and scaffolding. Searching for a Roman villa sent us on a wild goose chase and we ended the search after driving kms. out of our way. Next we drove up the mountain along the rocky gorge to the Roman aqueduct. There was a lovely park and stream where we startled a frog into a wild leap into the fast current, never to be seen again! We finished our day with dinner in Preveza on the boardwalk then back to the boat. A lovely sunset ended the day.      Read more

      Marshes and monuments

      After a day of not much doing except watching a NATO surveillance plane circling and flying over us all day, we decided on Wed. to take a trip to the Amvrakikos Wetlands past Preveza. Rather than take the longer route towards the Aqueduct, we turned off to a side road which again lead us to the Roman Villa. We did see the ancient olive press and baths but the Villa remains elusive! We followed some cows but it seems they led us astray so Bob maneuvered a narrow turnaround and we continued on our way. The gravel road along the shore seemed to get narrower and closer to the water, and was strewn with fallen rocks from the cliff along side us. I saw a few water fowl but not the pelicans I was hoping to see. We stopped at the Monastery of Pania Rhodia and from there the road was paved and 2 lane. We passed another flock of flamingos and once we were in the small town saw a stork/heron? sitting on a huge nest atop a pole! Very regal with a multitude of small birds flocking in and around the nest. The wetlands were beautiful but disappointing in its lack of birds.
      I've resorted to using Google maps on my phone rather than the 🤬 NAV in the car so we were able to find the route to the Monument of Zalongo this time. It is up the mountains and atop a cliff. It commemmorates the mass suicide of women and children in 1803 in order to be free of Ottoman ruler, Ali Pasha, whose house we saw at Vonitsa Castle. We climbed the 410 steps up the cliff to see the Monument, a small church and the gorgeous view. It's called the Dance of Zalongo because they danced before throwing themselves off the cliff. 😭🤯
      We stopped in Preveza for a walk along the harbourfront and a late lunch/early dinner at a quiet but lovely place with singing birds, hanging baskets, and cats. When the plane again flew overhead, the restaurant owners advised it was practicing and that there is a NATO base nearby. Who knew?!      Read more

      Winterlager in Aktio Marina Preveza

      So. 18.02. Ankunft in Aktio Marina. Bericht 1 Wo.
      nach einem angenehmen Flug über die Alpen,
      landete der Helvetic Flieger pünktlich im
      frühlingshaften Athen.
      Das Taxi hat schon auf mich gewartet was mich
      sehr beruhigte. Man weiss ja nie.
      Die 3 ½ Std. Fahrt nach Preveza, mit 2 weiteren
      Gästen, verlief sehr gemütlich. Vor der Brücke von
      Patras genehmigten wir uns noch ein Souvlaki
      Spiess und ich konnte mich schon wieder an den
      angenehmen Preisen erfreuen.
      4.80 EUR für 2 Souvlaki Spiesse und ein Coke. Die
      ganze Fahrt kostete mich durch das Share Konzept
      nur 90 EUR. Nice für 3.5 Std. Fahrt.
      Natürlich war ich gespannt und aufgeregt in
      welchem Zustand mich die AMBIRAMUS erwartet.
      Die Pflanzen, welche ich im Heck draussen
      platziert hatte, überlebten nicht alle. Was auch zu
      erwarten war.
      Ich öffnete die Tür zum Salon und ein muffiger
      Geruch kitzelte meine Nase. Schnell besuchte ich
      die eine Kabine, in welcher die Dachluke nicht
      ganz dicht war um mit dem Schlimmsten zu
      Rechnen. Aber alles halb so schlimm. Natürlich
      mussten jetzt ausgiebig die Kabinen gelüftet und
      getrocknet werden. Nach einer Woche alles
      wieder wunderbar.
      In den darauffolgenden Tagen galt es die
      verschiedenen Projekte in Angriff zu nehmen.
      . Landstrom anschliessen.
      . Heizung in Betrieb nehmen.
      . Beginn mit Reinigung und Einräumen
      . Beim Office angemeldet und Guard Karte
      besorgt. (24 Std. Überwachung in der Marina)
      . Wasser/Strom 8 EUR/Tg
      . Grosseinkauf in Preveza, welches nur mit dem
      Taxi erreichbar ist. Nicht ganz billig.
      Das Marina eigene Taxi verkehrt erst ab April
      wieder regelmässig gratis pro Tag.
      . Die Haare wieder einmal schneiden lassen und
      das für 10 EUR.
      . Beim Gemüsehändler um die Ecke, Früchte und
      Gemüse eingekauft. Wieder einmal feine, grosse,
      , geschmackvolle Orangen für 0.9 EUR/kg
      bekommen.
      . Div. Abklärungen beim Marina eigenen Chandler
      . 7 Life Jackets müssen gewartet werden.
      . 6 neue Feuerlöscher bestellen.
      . Die gewartete Liferaft ist beim Chandler
      angekommen und muss noch auf die
      AMBIRAMUS gehievt werden. Bei 90 kg. nicht
      ganz einfach und so warten wir bis die
      ABIRAMUS wieder ins Wasser kommt.
      . Die Auswahl der Produkte beim Chandler sind
      vielseitig und fehlt etwas wird dies sogleich
      bestellt. Wirklich unkompliziert.
      . Wassertanks (2 x 390 lit) auffüllen und
      desinfizieren.
      . Micropur 10'000 P (1 gr / 100lit) eingefüllt
      . 10 Min. lang alle Leitungen durchspült
      . die Propeller gereinigt.
      . Gerüst für Poliervorgang organisiert und
      aufgestellt.
      . Rostflecken auf dem Gelcoat gereinigt.      Read more

      After Sea la Vie...

      When we packed up and left Sea la Vie, it was a glorious blue sky, sunshiny morning with a few scattered tears. We left most of our belongings in storage at the marina until we fly home and drove to Pyrgos. We took country and coastal roads, twisting and turning with gorgeous views of mountains, turquoise water, islands, small villages festooned with gorgeous flowers, and a few road hazards: goats coming off the rocky cliffs to cross the road and a flock of sheep stampeding toward us! Instead of driving over the magnificent bridge between Rio & Patras, we took the ferry! A short ferry trip, got a bit lost and then to Pyrgos. Nothing special there except a good pizza dinner and it's close to Ancient Olympia, the site of the original Olympic Games.Read more

      Ionion Marina Yard in Aktio

      The boat was lifted yesterday a little late due to a scheduled power out but all chucked by 13:00, nice and close to power and water but sadly the toilet block next to us is out of action as they are installing new water tanks. The view across the fields and the Preveza Gulf is beautiful. Boats bottom was a lot dirtier than last year but we, well I have now scrapped and sanded it down, popped the bubbles and scrapped out wet bits and John has wire brushed back to steel where needed so almost ready for primer. Having a break now that we have finished the smurf jobs.
      Only problem at the moment is that even though we have now properly cleaned the transducer, the downward facing sensor, for the depth sounder we are still not getting a reading, it ticks and the receiving screen appears to function OK just no depth. John is hoping to hear from Robin shortly.      Read more

      Floating again !!

      Well it took a while but we are back on the water. The boat was all ready to go except for the new transducer for the the depth sounder, a week after lifting but it took over 2.5 weeks for the transducer to arrive. I think this was partly my fault in the way that I had asked the remitter to address the package but also partly Greek bloody paperwork. We ordered the transducer on 1/4, it took only 36 hours to travel from Guernsey to Athens but then spent 3 days waiting to be processed before DHL failed to contact us, they used incorrect email address, we called them. We then started the painful process of complying with Greek paperwork, 3 customs invoices, a payment to Guernsey for goods not yet received, a further payment to DHL for assisting with customs clearance and finally at 3:00 on wed 17/4 it arrived. It took 10 minutes to fit but no lift space until Friday morning. Thursday we gave the dinghy outboard a blast and took ourselves across to Preveza to check out fuel options and space on the town quay and met some more expat locals, Dave and the dog that had adopted him for the winter, Frank from NY and his daughter, Steve on a self built stainless steel 30ft yacht and Mary a Polish/Canadian whose been in Greece for 15 years now whose waiting for crew to help with the pre season maintenance.
      It was a relief this morning to find that the depth sounder was fully operational, don’t want to contemplate how we would have felt had it still not worked. There is a festive feel in Preveza as it’s Christian Good Friday today even though the majority of Greeks will be celebrating next weekend.
