      Plaka

      October 9, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Letzter Tag in Athen

      February 3, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

      Heute habe ichs richtig genossen.

Read more

      Tag 95

      December 1, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Read more

      Die Akropolis, unser ständiger Begleiter

      April 11, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

      April 12, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Read more

      Naxos Day 4/Athens Day 1

      May 16, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Our final day in the Greek islands was a lovely relaxing one. We got up and packed then headed out to Apollo’s Doorway and walked around town before having brunch at ‘Honey and Cinnamon’. The food was delicious and it was the best place to relax and read for an hour. We then picked up our bags and headed to the port to catch the ferry to Athens which was a 4 hour ride.

We both nearly finished our books! We also got to see some of the other islands we missed out on, as the boat stopped at Mykonos and Syros on the way. We arrived in Athens and caught the metro to our little apartment. It’s a nice little place — but Steve cannot stand up in the tiny kitchen. We arrived around 7:40pm so dropped our bags and went straight out for dinner at a place called Vegananki - it was amazing, we were able to try a vegan moussaka and we also had a wrap. As we walked home we could see so many ancient sites and we were both buzzing to explore Athens and wished we had more time to do everything.

We booked our first walking tour for tomorrow morning and are ready to explore. So far loving Athens.

      Athens Day 2

      May 17, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After our experience in Naxos we got up nice and early to make sure we were at the walking tour meeting point with plenty of time to spare. Our tour guide told us that nothing runs on time and/or goes to plan in Greece, which we had definitely experienced. Billy was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable and funny whilst telling us all about Greek history. Steve and I got a lot out of the tour — it was a great way to get our bearings. We walked through the botanic gardens, saw a bunch of different ancient monuments and ended up back near our accomodation.

We then had a quick lunch at another vegan place, then decided to head to the Ancient Agora. Tomorrow is International Museum Day which means that everything will be free entry, but also that the crowds will be horrendous, so we decided to go along today. We used a free audio guide to talk us through the Agora and found it fascinating. We then had a quick drink at A for Athens, a rooftop bar that looks out towards the Acropolis.

By then it was about 6pm and we figured it would be a good time to head up there and visit the Acropolis — the sun wasn’t too biting anymore and we assumed a lot of people would be heading down for dinner. The climb up wasn’t too bad, and while there were plenty of people around it didn’t seem too bad. We once again listened to an audio guide and spent an hour or so enjoying the view and checking out the remains of the Parthenon and other buildings. It’s absolutely mind blowing! We cannot believe we are here in Athens. It started to get very windy so we headed down to get some dinner in the Psyri neighbourhood, which is sort of like Fitzroy in Melbourne. There was a demonstration at the main square with heaps of people waving flags and singing.

We had dinner at Flint which was beautiful and we both enjoyed a glass of white wine, stuffed mushrooms and octopus. We then headed to a beer place to have another drink and as we went to pay they gave us shots of tsipouro on the house. We then stumbled home well and truly ready for bed.

      Last Event: Tavern Kalokerinos

      June 9, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

After our awe-inspiring visit to the Temple of Poseidon, we hopped back onto our private coach, leaving the beautiful Sounio behind, and made our way back to the city of Athens. We checked back into the Hotel London, our home away from home, before heading out to the Athenian shops one last time.

With our final shopping spree complete, we into a had lunch in the heart of the city. Our afternoon was spent back at the hotel, where we had a few hours to rest and pack. We're scheduled to leave for the airport at the unearthly hour of 2:30am!!!

Before that, though, there was one final Greek experience awaiting us - a dinner show at the Tavern Kalokerinos in Athens. The night was filled with traditional Greek dancing, local cuisine, and fun. A few of the kids even joined in the fun, busting their moves on the dance floor as the audience cheered!

It was a perfect wrap to our Greek adventure - steeped in history, enriched by culture, and chock full of unforgettable experiences. As we prepare for our journey home, we take with us memories that will last a lifetime. Opa!

      Contextual Factor 2 (Q8)

      May 14, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Question 8: AGAIN-In regard to the contextual factors, talk about one (which of course is not the one you just talked about) and what you learned while we were in Greece that helped you understand that factor in more depth?

Another contextual factor I learned a lot about was the Greek's laid back culture and tendency to take their time. In the book we read in preparation for our trip it talked a lot about the fact that Greeks are often late for things. As someone who is rarely late, this was something that surprised me while preparing for the trip. I thought it was probably not as common as the book made it out to be, however, we encountered it quite a bit. Our ferry back to Athens to head home was running late. Both days we worked with the refugees they came later than the start time. Fotis Vazeos was late for dinner. I learned that Greece's lack of punctuality isn't because they don't care or because they are lazy, but rather the opposite. In Greece people care about relationships. They take their time to have conversations with each other and enjoy life. This is why there are hardly any fast food type places and why most places don't really do food to-go. Greeks would rather take their time and sit and enjoy their coffee or food than be on the go 24-7 like we are so used to in the United States. I honestly really like this way of doing things. I wish we had a little more time to just sit back, take it all in, and enjoy the little parts of life.

Athens food on foot by Ariah

      May 22, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Today was so fun. I went on a good tour and all of the food was delicious. My favourite ones were definitely the yogurt with the spoon sweets and the ice cream. The ice cream was made by chopping strawberries and choc milk on a metel frozen plate and rolled up and into a ice cream cup. I also had other foods like a cheese platter and pita bread with beef. The cheese platter had herb cheese , feta, meat and olives. The green olives were delicious. The pita bread with beef also had tomatoes with it and tasted really good. Our tour guide also took us places where she told us about Greek history Which was interesting. Then the tour ended and we walked home and had spanakopita (which is spinach and feta in filo pastry) for dinner and for dessert we had baklava (which is honey filo pastry with pistachios) and cherry pie and yogurt we were so tired from our day we went straight to sleep 🛌.Read more
