      Heraklion

      La nuit a été très compliquée… En plus de ne pas être installée confortablement, la clim est trop forte, j’ai froid. La journée va être longue…
      Arrivées à 6h30 à Heraklion, on récupère nos sacs et direction un café pour prendre le petit dej. On n’a pas beaucoup mangé hier soir et puis il faut s’occuper, à cette heure là, il n’y a pas grand chose d’autre à faire… On s’installe en terrasse. Je prends des pancakes vegan et un « freddo espresso » (un espresso avec des glaçons quoi). On y reste jusqu’à 11h (oui oui j’ai eu du mal à lever mes fesses).
      Je quitte Manon et je vais à mon auberge poser mon sac. Je ressors me promener dans le centre-ville. C’est mignon, il y a encore plein de petits magasin attrape-touriste mais en soi, la ville n’a pas vraiment de charme particulier. Je visite qq églises/cathédrales. Dans l’une d’elle, il y a eu exposition d’art super sympa. Ensuite, je vais marcher le long de la mer, je vois la forteresse. Le soleil tape, je rentre vers 13/14h.
      Vers 15h30, direction la plage Ammoudara. La plus proche apparemment, mais il faut quand même faire 15min de bus… J’ai retrouvé une plage de sable wouhouuuu. Les gens sont tous entassés où il y a les chaises longues et parasols, je vais un peu plus loin, je suis tranquille. Il y a plein de vent à la plage, au moins il ne fait pas trop chaud. Je vais me baigner, l’eau est bonne! Et étonnamment, je m’endors sur la plage… Vers 18h, je rentre, je prends ma douche et ressors voir les couleurs du coucher du soleil.       Is the literal meaning of “acropolis,” and the multi-cultural population of a city visits it every day, In 480 BC, sixteen year old Pericles, his friend Sophocles, and their precocious tag-along pal Phidias stared up at the ruins still smoking on the hill where the Persians had burned and looted the Ancient Temple, along with just about everything else. “They’ll be preserved, no one will be allowed to cart them away, so we never forget,” said Sophocles. “Not this time” Pericles replied. “We’re going to build the biggest temple in the world.” “Need a sculptor?”’ asked Phidias. This graphic novel is pretty much accurate. Things to remember: the Parthenon was the treasury for Athens: in fact Phidias’ colossus of Athena inside concealed large reservoirs of gold and other precious materials. The religious building was the Erechtheion, named after the ancestral King Erechtheus, who founded Athens. The friezes that were on the Parthenon show the procession which will end in the sacrifice of Erechtheus’ youngest daughter Chthonia to make come true Apollo’s oracle that Athens will defeat its enemy Eleusis if he does so. (Sophocles’ frenemy Euripides wrote a play about it that was dramaturged by Socrates. Most of the play is lost.) Many of those friezes were looted in 1800 by Englishman Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, and his abetting wife and are on permanent exhibit in the British Museum. The new stunning Acropolis museum exists precisely to refute the classist British assertion that the Greeks don’t know how to take care of their own heritage.       Isle miss you, seaya Aegean soon

      Today we started off in Heraklion, Crete. We left the ship and followed a yellow line to
      Rocca a Mare, a 16th century Fortress. Then continued on to the city to explore and enjoy the area.

      We again boarded and headed to a 'cocktail party' with our tour guide where he explained the disembarkation process and what is happening tour as it was the final day of our 2 week tour.

      After some cocktails and coffees we headed to the on board casino for our traditional pokie session. When I say traditional, I mean we did it on the only other cruise we've been on where we won $40 off $20. This time we picked out our lucky machine, and inserted a crisp 10 euro note, after about 2 minutes of playing we walked away with 104 euros. So that is a 100% win streak for us with cruise ship pokies.

      We then arrived at our final stop - Santorini, The 'Black Pearl of the Aegean' specifically we went to the cliff-top village of Oia. The views here were absolutely stunning.

      We expected to see a lot of tourists, but I don't think we fully comprehended how popular this island is, in peak season they see up to 160,000 visitors a day. Now that's a lot of people for these tiny streets where there's only 15k permanent residents.

      Once we got back on board we enjoyed Mexican for dinner and enjoyed the views from the volcanic islands as we sailed away.

      Gut geschlafen, zügig ausgeschifft, Anek Lines lassen uns wirklich bis kurz vor Ankunft schlafen👍.
      Wir parken das Auto direkt am Hafen und erkunden die Stadt, die gerade aufwacht. Die (Kern-)Altstadt ist sehenswert. Die Miniläden und die Enge erinnert an arabische Souks. Genau wie das Angebot. Die breiteren Strässchen beherbergen aber auch die bekannten Nobelläden. Armut und Reichtum liegt sehr nah beieinander. Bettler/innen gibt es zu Hauf. Wir erkunden die kleinen Läden, vielleicht findet sich ja ein schönes Souvenir. Tatsächlich finden wir den Messerladen der einzigen nennenswerten Schmiede Kretas. Natürlich werde ich fündig und Nikos, der Sohn des Chefs, schließt ob des guten Geschäfts sofort Freundschaft mit uns, die mit schwarz gebranntem Raki verschiedener Alkoholstärken besiegelt wird.
      Wer Kreta bereist, wird dem Raki nicht entkommen können lesen wir später. Hat bei uns nicht lang gedauert😂.
      Wir suchen die Sehenswürdigkeiten und vor allem die Hafenfestung auf, welche sehr gut restauriert wurde und ein Museum enthält. Also keine Ruinen, sondern mal eine Instand gesetzte Festung. Mit bis zu über 8m dicken Mauern und ein paar schönen Artefakten. Interessanter Besuch, den wir in einer Hafen(Fisch)Taverne beschließen.
      Shrimpssaganaki und eine Art Zwieback mit Tomatenpulpo und Feta auf Olivenöl. Alles sehr lecker und authentisch. Als Dank an den Gast noch etwas Süßes und einen Raki

      Greece. Crete and Christening Crashing.

      Sometimes the best days happen because they're not planned. The spontaneity eliminates expectations; and today was a shining example of how glad I am to not have planned detail to the minutiae on this incredible voyage.

      I'm sleeping a lot. Acknowledging my body may also be demanding recoup after the calamitous pace of the journey so far. I'm listening. I'm grateful. The late nights and sips are a version of me I no longer recognise. I now demand solitude. Movies. An occasional wine. Herbal tea and early nights. The bartender closest to my room knows my order well. A pina colada. No alcohol. A pineapple coconut slushie really. Early nights and Netflix.

      I'd researched a little (in fairness, only in the previous days), what Heraklion (Crete), Greece had to offer and was reminded of one of the few history lessons I recall being interested in. The mythological story of Theseus and the Minotaur, based in crete, captivated the 14 year old in me. I wasn't able to honour this history lesson, though today's adventures filled my heart in a way Mrs Maggs (sorry, we once referred to her as Mrs Scraggs) my year 7 & 8 history teacher never could.

      I met Ian and Annie the moment I boarded this cruise. I decided after my tribulations in Istanbul that morning, and desire for a lengthy afternoon siesta, a red with lunch was the order of the day. I met Ian as he heard my Aussie accent ordering such red. "How typical! An Aussie at the bar!". My reply of "Get f*cked!" Aussie slang for I see you too bro, cemented our friendship.

      I commenced this morning not knowing what I was capable of. No plans in place. I met Ian in the corridors after breakfast. He had planned to explore Crete in the exact way I'd mentally pieced together, and we agreed to meet at 10am. Disembark. And see what eventuated.

      For some context, Ian is close to one of the most empathic, kind, hilarious people I've met in my time on this planet. Top of the corporate game, he gave it all up to care for his sister, who'd been disabled after an MVA in the prime of her life.

      His compassion, wit and hilarity is contagious. A story for context:

      Ian: I've done a lot of cruises and noticed on all the cruise itineraries a daily meeting for Bill W. I thought. Who is this Bill W and why is he on every cruise I book? I attended the meeting one day, curious to know who Bill W is /was. Drink in hand, I walk in. Late. All eyes on me. And the next person stands. Introduces themselves. Hi. I'm Bob. I'm an addict of 7 years and... IT WAS / IS an AA / NA meeting. Ian attended with drink in hand 🤣🤣, completely unawares. And made a quick exit shortly thereafter.

      Our morning in Crete was as equally hilarious. We wandered. Dined. We found ourselves in the oldest restaurant in Crete and enjoyed fine Greek tea. Pastries. Ice cream.

      We shopped. I tried on a lux Euro jacket and purchased a handheld "Looking Cute" handheld mirror to take the p*ss out of ourselves and the many tour directors holding up similar placards.

      The highlight of our day was crashing a Christening. Little Eggapai (that's our name for her) enjoyed a few tourists in the church. We were kind enough to donate for our prayers. We are planning on crashing a wedding sometime tomorrow.

      Moritz: Mist… Wir haben vergessen das Essen aus dem Siga Siga Restaurant zu fotografieren. Das war mega. Und nun wissen wir auch wie man (in Griechenland) griechisch isst. Es ist eher wie Tapas nur üppiger. Jedenfalls war’s zu viel 😅

      Ultima sera a Creta. Facciamo una visita per il centro della capitale. É una città così viva!
      Iniziamo dal parco Georgiadis, ben attrezzato, pulito e con un angolo dedicato alle piante officinali. Stasera c'è un'orchestra che suona in piazza Eleftherias e un mercatino dell'artigianato ne fa da cornice.
      Da qui si diramano diverse vie, un tripudio di luci e colori, perfette per lo shopping e per gustare il cibo di strada. Camminando camminando, siamo arrivati al Porto Veneziano, percorribile fino alla fine del molo. Abbiamo cenato all'ombra della Fortezza Veneziana che lo domina con la sua imponenza, assaporando anche la leggera brezza proveniente dal mare.

      V Heraclionu je v vstopu v marino, ogroma trdnjava, ki je varaovala mesto pred nepridipravimi.

      Trdnjava Koules v Heraklionu Kreta: Beneški grad Heraklion se imenuje Koules, kar v turščini pomeni trdnjava. To je impresivna trdnjava, ki obdaja pristanišče Heraklion na Kreti. Grad Koules je ogromna trdnjava z dvema nadstropjema, ki je nekoč varovala vhod v pristanišče. Grad so zgradili Benečani v začetku 13. stoletja, ko so osvojili mesto. Najzgodnejši opis beneškega gradu Koules obstaja v delu florentinskega meniha Cristofora Buondelmontija iz leta 1429.

      Plačama vztopnino ( 8€ za oba), ter si jo ogledava. Zanimivo a ne impresivno. Na ploščadi trdnjave še posnameva par fotografij ter nadaljujeva po rivieri Heracliona.
      Malo sva si zaželela trgovinic zato se peš napotiva do bližnjega centra, ki je bil zaprt 😅. V Starbucksu si privoščiva Frapuccino in se napotiva nazaj do parkirne hiše da prevzameva avto.
      Pot do hotela sva tokrat nadaljevala kar po stari cesti. Čez mesta in vasi. Lepo je bilo 🇬🇷☺️.      Read more

      Unser heutiges Quartier für die Nacht bestand aus 4 kleinen blauen Stühlen und einem runden Tisch, jeweils zwei dieser Minisessel dienten uns als Bett, die obere Hälfte unseres hinterns hat es gerade noch so auf die Stuhlkante geschafft, wenn man versucht hat sich einigermaßen waagerecht hinzulegen, während die untere hälfte auf unserem Backpack geruht hat, den wir zwischen die zwei Stühle geklemmt haben, sodass die beine auf dem anderen Stuhl entspannen konnten. So haben wir unsere Zeit von 4h morgen bis ca. 10h verbracht, immer wieder Mal musste man sich bewegen und die Position so weit es möglich war ändern, um die Nackenschmerzen, die die vorherige Position mit der Zeit verursachte loszuwerden, aber im großen und ganzen ging so die Fährfahrt relativ schnell um und wir haben mehr Schlaf bekommen als befürchtet, als wir gesehen haben, was uns an Materialien für ein Bettähnliches Konstrukt zur Verfügung stand 😂. Für den Rest des Tages waren dennoch ziehmlich energielos und haben dementsprechend nichts anderes gemacht als gegessen, Wäsche gewaschen, ein bisschen geplant und im Hostel entspannt. Heute Abend haben wir dann noch leckere Nudeln mit soße in der Hostelküche gekocht und diese auf der Dachterrasse hier genossen :)Read more
