      Día 4: Gullfoss, “La cascada dorada”

      Si hoy podemos visitar esta maravilla es gracias a una mujer que amaba la naturaleza.

      Su padre era el dueño de este lugar y vio potencial económico si la convertía en central hidroeléctrica. A su hija esto le pareció una aberración y se opuso a ello.

      Viendo la negativa de su padre, esta le dijo que iría hasta Reikiavik andando y volver. Si a su vuelta él no había parado el proyecto, ella se precipitaría al vacío de la cascada.

      A su llegada, todo se había parado y se conservó este increíble lugar. Todo gracias a su valentía. Actualmente se le recuerda como “La mujer y la tierra”. Su nombre era Sigríður Tomasdóttir.

      Por otro lado, la leyenda cuenta que recibe el nombre de “La cascada dorada” debido a que un campesino, antes de morir, arrojó todo su dinero a la cascada, por miedo a que otros se lo quedaran cuando él ya no estuviera. De este modo, nunca nadie tendría acceso a sus riquezas.

      Sooo u think I made this walk with spike shoes? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Well nope I didn't 🙈🙈🙈

      Super windy day again. Unbelievable how strong this wind can be over here.

      One part of the route was closed as it was too dangerous. The waterfall spilled water on the way which froze and made it impossible to pass this way.

      E finalmente l'Islanda vera, quella che ti vendono in agenzia quando prenoti tra novembre e marzo, compare davanti a noi! Distese sterminate di bianco, la neve con fiocchi grossi come noci, il cielo argentato e il vento che soffia forte e tagliente. Manco il freddo riesce a rovinare questo pomeriggio!

      Questa è decisamente la cascata più bella di quelle che abbiamo visto qui. È particolare per la sua portata (niente a che vedere con le Niagara Falls ma notevole comunque) ma soprattutto per il suo coreografico doppio salto, scavato in mezzo a due muraglioni di roccia scura. Per Matt è stata la cascata più bella che abbia mai visto, e in effetti è impossibile rimanere indifferenti davanti alla sua potenza. Tra l'altro si dice che sia chiamata Gullfoss, "cascata dell'oro" perchè pare che un ricco islandese ci abbia gettato tutto il suo oro perchè non finisse nelle mani di altri alla sua morte... e questo oro perduto è indicato dagli enormi arcobaleni che si possono vedere d'estate, quando il sole la illumina! Anche se non abbiamo visto gli arcobaleni devo dire che stavolta l'inverno ha avuto il suo fascino, in questo posto, tra la neve, il ghiaccio e il bianco e nero naturale delle rocce. Il vento tirava forte, soprattutto quando siamo saliti in cima al sentiero che portava alla sommità della cascata, al punto tale che ho visto Matt bardatissimo contro il freddo e alla mia domanda "senti freddo?" mi ha risposto "sì, agli occhi".... 😂😂😂      Read more

      Unser nächstes Ziel war der Gullfoss. Auch hier war ziemlich viel los. Dennoch war der Wasserfall mit seinen gigantischen Wassermassen (durchschnittlich ca. 130 m³/s) sehr beeindruckend. Auch die Sonne hat zwischenzeitlich kurz durch geblinzelt. So konnten wir sogar noch einen Regenbogen am Wasserfall sehen.Read more

      Gullfoss Waterfall: the most popular waterfall in Iceland. Gullfoss is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in Iceland and is one of the largest. The falls plunge 32 meters over two tiers into the Hvita River below.

      Icelanders are very eco conscious (even before the current crisis) and are concerned about the ever increasing effects of both hydropower and geothermal power used to power heavy industry on the Icelandic landscape, river and waterfalls. For this reason the Gullfoss waterfall has special meaning.

      In the last century there were plans to dam the Hvítá river to generate electricity but those plans were fiercely opposed by the local woman Sigridur Tomasdottir (1871 – 1957) who lived on the farm of Brattholt just nearby. In her early adulthood she made her living partly by guiding travelers to the waterfall that, at that time, was practically in the middle of nowhere. Her herculean efforts to oppose any plans to use Hvítá or Gullfoss to generate electricity earned her the distinction of being a pioneer of environmentalism in Iceland. Today, tens of thousands of people experience the majesty of Gullfoss waterfall. Sigridur would surely approve, even though the relief plaque (see photo) indicates a stern demeanor.

      Next up on the South Tour is the Sólheimajökull Glacier.

      Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap which lies atop the Katla caldera. The glacier is melting rapidly owing to warmer annual temperatures due to climate change. It is possible that many of the country's glaciers will become extinct within the next century.

      The small icebergs that have broken off of the glacier lie in a pool at it’s base. The blue is quite beautiful. This is called a moving glacier which means it is still growing. However, with climate change and global warming this may cease and it may start receding.      Read more

      Nachdem unser Adrenalinspiegel ordentlich in die Höhe getrieben wurde, hieß es erst einmal cool down bei den Gullfoss Wasserfällen. Es war sehr windig, was zugleich bedeutet, dass es gefühlt minus 15 Gad für uns waren 🥶🤣. Rote Wängchen ahoi.

      Leider kommt das ein oder andere Naturspektakel auf Bildern überhaupt nicht so rüber wie es in Wirklichkeit ist. Ich vertraue hier einfach mal auf euer Vorstellungsvermögen 😉.

      Memo:
      Der Gullfoss (der "goldene Wasserfall") ist einer der ikonischsten und beliebtesten Wasserfälle Islands und befindet sich in der Schlucht des Flusses Hvítá im Südwesten Islands.
      Das Wasser des Hvítá-Flusses entspringt vom Gletscher Langjökull, bevor es in einer dramatischen Präsentation der rohen Kraft der Natur 32 Meter tief über die beiden Stufen des Gullfoss hinunterstürzt. Diese unglaubliche Stätte wird von den meisten Reisenden besichtigt, da sie sich auf der Besichtigungsroute des Goldenen Kreises befindet.
      Aufgrund der zwei Stufen des Wasserfalls sollte der Gullfoss eigentlich als zwei getrennte Elemente betrachtet werden. Die erste, kürzere Kaskade ist 11 Meter hoch, während der zweite Sturz 21 Meter beträgt. Die Schluchtwände auf beiden Seiten des Wasserfalls erreichen eine Höhe von bis zu 70 Metern und führen in den großen Gullfossgjúfur-Canyon hinab. Geologen glauben, dass dieser Canyon durch Gletscherschmelzen zu Beginn der letzten Eiszeit entstanden ist.

      als letzten Tagespunkt vor unserer Ankunft an den Horizons wählten wir den Gullfoss aus. der Gullfoss ist ein zweistufiger Wasserfall des Flusses Hvítá,der die Provinzen Hrunamannahreppur und Bláskógabyggð voneinander trennt.tief ins Erdreich frisst sich das Flussbett nach dem tiefen Sturz ins Erdreich und fließt Richtung Meer
