    Meeting Dalai Lama

    October 12, 2017 in India

Didn't just get to meet and talk to him individually but all done in front of his private room because he was going in to ordain monks from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Group photo in the prayer and religious instructions room of the highest Lama priests.

    Lah

    August 8 in India

    Leh, Ladakh (arrival)

    August 16, 2015 in India

The road from Manali to Leh is often seen as a rite of passage for those seeking adventure in Jammu & Kashmir. As if the region being disputed territory wasn't enough, the road there is riddled with blind turns, illusory shoulders crumbling over 100 meter cliff sides, and frequent landslides.

    Shanti Stupa, Leh

    August 18, 2015 in India

Today, my group of Markha Valley co-trekkers and I did a prep climb to a hilltop monastery overlooking Leh to test our readiness for tomorrow's seven day Markha Valley journey. Adjusting to the altitude is a long-winded affair given that Leh is situated around 12,000 feet above sea level (over twice as high as Denver). It's easier to let the pictures speak to the beauty of the monastery's desert and snow-capped mountain views.Read more

Leh Palace & Tsemo Castle Monastery

    August 28, 2015 in India

I decided today that I would tomorrow begin a 3-day, minimal gear climb of Stok Kangri (6153 meters). In an attempt to re-acclimate to cardio above 3500 meters, my friend Allie, a New Yorker I met in Rishikesh, and I climbed to Leh Palace and a Gompa that overlook Leh, similar to the view at Shanti Stupa but a little higher.

    een droom die uitkomt

    August 20, 2016 in India

    Stok-kangri

    August 31, 2016 in India

    Leh Adventures

    August 18, 2015 in India

At 3500m above sea level, Leh is the capital of the Ladakh region. We spent here two days acclimatizing to the altitude, before going trekking at some even higher altitudes.
All the restaurants in Leh are tourist-oriented, and each of then serves Indian, Tibetan, Chinese, Italian and Israeli food. Surprisingly, all food in all restaurants was really good. Not as surprisingly, the food was really cheap, and it took us a while to learn how not to over-order.
At our guesthouse we would wake up to a thermos of hot tea waiting for us by the door every morning (which we ended up breaking...). At the guesthouse we also met Clark, who wanted to join us for the trek, and he had a water sterilizing device, so we let him ;)
On the second day we hiked up to Shanti Stupa, to see how the acclimatization is going. It turned out to be okay, but we didn't have our backpacks on for that hike...
