      Travel... and travel.... and Milan

      July 26, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

This update encompasses 2 days for us. Yesterday was mostly travel with an overnight stop in Paris. We had to first get our cars back to Rouen from Caen. Last time we were taking the backroads, but this time it was all highways and toll booths. The speed limit on these French highways is 130 so we were just buzzing down the road. I am not sure what I prefer. Scenic drive but narrow winding roads and slower speeds... or blinding speeds, multiple lanes but so much traffic. Anyway, it was nice to experience both. And we managed to get our cars back with no accidents so that is a win.

We hadn't purchased our train tickets back to Paris yet as we were still trying to decide... do we go straight to Paris, or do we go to Giverny first. It was a tough decision but the stress of high speed highway driving and with the prospect of a long travel day the next day, we decided just to get to Paris. So we booked our tickets and we were off.

All in all it was a pretty uneventful day. I don't think I even took any pictures. We got to Paris, bought some metro tickets for the trip to our hotel as well as our trip the next day to the train station, and then headed over to our hotel. The room was great and spacious which was nice. We wish we could have stayed there longer. We found a place around the corner to eat and enjoyed a very nice, long lasting, unhurried meal on their outside patio. After that is was off to bed because we had to get up around 6 am in order to make sure we got to our 7:26 train to Milan.

The next day everything was going well. We arrived at the station really early, got some breakfast and some lunch for the ride, got on the train... and... sat there. A breakdown on the line had us delayed for well over an hour and a half. It wasn't bad though. We watched downloaded content on our phones and just waited it out. The train ride after that was beautiful but they put this wrap over the whole train to advertise stuff but it ruins some of the view. Oh well.

We arrived in Milan and it was hot. 35 degrees I believe. We checked in to our Hotel. Here, we had to settle for 2 rooms which ended up fine. We could do with a little time away from each other 😉.

Once settled we walked down from here to the Milan Duomo. It was about a 40 minute walk but hey.... it's Milan. After taking in the sights for a bit we were off to find food. In the end we walked all the way back to our hotel and found a place to eat across the street. Everyone enjoyed their Italian food and then we were off to our rooms to relax and have a great sleep.

Tomorrow we are off to La Spezia as our launching point to the Cinque Terre. Another travel day so we are looking forward to being able to settle a bit there. And the sights should be amazing. So off to bed. Chow Bella.

      D2🇮🇹: Día por Milan

      December 3, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

      Our new best friend

      May 2, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

So, after receiving a recommendation of where to go this evening for somewhere to eat (thanks Cheryl Davies), unfortunately it was the other side of Milan. So we resolved to return to the lovely restaurant we visited yesterday. And we were welcomed back like long lost family. Francesco, the owner/chef, came over to greet us personally, and to thank us for coming back. We were then given additional food and drink throughout the evening and were thoroughly spoiled.
      Fantastic.

      Well, its different.

      June 22, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

Syd and Ralph headed out to a nail salon down the street to get Syd a touch up. On the way a man was sharpening his shank on a concrete street post while holding out his hat for money. There is graffiti everywhere, and not the pretty kind. It’s sad, really. Beautiful facades defaced from the ground to eye level. It makes the place look like the shit parts of Oakland.

      Syds not comfortable here alone.

Mailand - hier gibt's einen Dom?

      June 9, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      October 28, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Milan

      January 31 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 2 °C

We flew to Milan, very lucky to have the whole empty rows to ourselves, one for each and we slept pretty well, arriving well rested. We started the day with a VoiceMap highlights tour of Milan and walked around the old center. First, we admired the famous Duomo. Each of us saw it before, but it still doesn’t take away the awe inspired by the grandiose of this majestic marble structure. We had lunch and in the afternoon I went on another VoiceMap tour. It took me a bit further away from the center, and also told me some interesting facts - for example, pointing a sculpture on the Duomo facade that looks exactly like the Statue of Liberty! Or sharing that until now, the Madonna on top of Duomo had to be the tallest point in the city. But when they build modern buildings, they got around this rule by placing the copy of this Madonna on top of every structure taller than the Duomo! Finally, I saw the small chapel in a small church that was all decorated with the human sculls and bones - from the 15th century, when a huge part of the population was wiped out by the Black Death plague. The church was a reminder to the impermanence of life, while also taking care of the extra remains that the city didn’t have any place to bury!Read more

      Milan

      April 30 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Milan - A short stop (well it was meant to be!) for the important things.
An early start being woken up at 5am by a blaring alarm, but we could relax a bit with breakfast being delivered at 7 and disembarking at Milano Rogeredo at 7 40. After a bit of confusion getting on metro arrived at Milano Centrale and dropped off our bags for a morning of sightseeing. The station is as magnificent and sprawling as I remember, but so glad to see new sights this time. Sadly La Scal awas shrouded in scaffolding, but Galleria Vottorio was a few steps away ( and yes I can see the resemblance to Block Arcade!) And the a few steps further to the Duomo. It was all magnificent and busy!
We were supposed to catch 1.10 train to La Spezia and the Riomaggiore, and 90 minutes later we were on the train.
Riomaggiore is as beautiful and quaint as I remember - but more cafes!
We are staying opposite the Church on a little piazza and overlooking main street - just delightful - uphill but not too many steps. Dinner at a nearby Cafe and after a stroll in the balmy twilight a stop for some local vino bianco before bed
