      The final stop of a day of Amalfi exploration, I was more taken by Sant'agnello di Sorrento than Sorrento itself, for it's serene and retreat like feel. The Grand Hotel Cocumella certainly ranked amongst my favourite hotels in Campania, if not of those I've seen over my entire first year of travelling with work. Sorrento itself was nonetheless brilliant and I recognised the streets from my last visit.Read more

      Day 4–6

      Pompeii and Sorrento

      Our trip to Sorrento was a whirlwind of pasta, gelato and lemoncello. We wanted to buy more but have such a packed bag it's tough to fit! We also stopped through Pompeii on the way to visit the archaeological ruins. The guide was an expert and made it worthwhile. It was hilarious the way the people of pompeii put penis signs everywhere for good luck!Read more

      Bootstour Positano & Amalfi

      Am Pfingstmontag haben wir einen Bootsausflug nach Positano und Amalfi unternommen. Nachdem wir Capri passiert hatten gehörte der Blick ganz allein der wunderschönen Amalfi Küste. Einerseits ist Positano wunderschön anzusehen, andererseits haben wir in der Vorsaison nicht mit derartigen Menschenmassen gerechnet. Nach unzähligen Stufen erreichten wir die enge Durchgangsstraße auch Amalfitana genannt, auf der in einem konzertierten Chaos Kfz aller Art mit den Fußgängern um die Vorherrschaft bei der Fortbewegung ringen. Nachdem wir dieses Tumult einige Zeit genossen haben, retteten wir uns auf ein Kaltgetränk in die Strandbar. Nach 2 Stunden ging es weiter nach Amalfi, dort besuchten wir den Dom, um anschließend das illustre Treiben aus einer Eisdiele heraus beobachten zu dürfen.Read more

      Sorrento, Italy

      What we did:
      - Early 5am wake up to meet our first visitors! Taxi to Milan airport and bus from Naples to Sorrento - bit of a battle against motion sickness on all the windy roads but we prevailed
      - Trent and Steph checked in first with Helen and Brian arriving soon after following their flight from Malta and tour of Pompeii. Once there, everyone enjoyed catching up on the balcony over Italian wine and Maltese chocolates!
      - The group wandered through the streets of Sorrento on the way to dinner. Pitstop along the way for Aperol Spritz overlooking the marina! Living the good life
      - Fun few hours of Italian dinner and wines down at the Marina as the moon came up over the ocean.
      - Buzzed up by a few hours of drinks we ended up in absolute candy/booze onslaught in this Lemoncello shop (Limono Fabbrica) recommended by Sara. The store girls kept producing an array of free Lemoncello shots with various forms of lemon candy as chasers and “No” was simply not an option. After 15 minutes and 5+ shots each we bought a bottle and stumbled our way out of the store. Absolutely delicious, but man our heads paid for it in the morning.

      What we ate:
      - Breakfast bars and stale Naples airport baggage claim sandwhiches
      - Great dinner at Bagni Delfino! Right on the marina edge, enjoyed two bottles of local white wine, Caprese/Calimari apps, and seafood risotos/seafood platters for dinner. Thank you Brian/Helen!!

      Fun facts:
      - Ryan air does indeed stink. Just treat you like flying cattle with surcharges for in flight-oxygen
      - Sorrento is the birthplace of Limoncello. Original family recipes date back to 1900, with an international commerciallizarion of the “lemoncello” name not formalized until 1990. Made of a simple recipe of lemon peels, sugar, alcohol and water, this stuff is sacred in the area. Endless rows of similar shops deal their own take on the recipe throughtout the area.       Sorrent mit seinen ca. 17.000 Einwohner*innen zählt zu den schönsten Ferienorten Italiens. Wunderschöne Gärten mit exotischer Vegetation umgeben die auf einer steilen Felsterrasse gelegene Stadt. Sorrent ist vor allem für seine prächtigen Zitronen bekannt, aber auch als Geburtsstadt von Torquato Tasso (1544-1594).Read more

      Bekannt ist Sorrent auch für seine Einkaufsmöglichkeiten. Es gibt alles, was das Herz begehrt, Stände mit einer üppigen Auswahl an Obst und Gemüse, feinste Lederwaren, modische Bekleidung, diverse Deko-Artikel und Souvenirs, wobei diese Aufzählung keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit erhebt.
      Auf den geplanten Besuch eines Landwirtschaftsbetriebes mussten wir wegen des großen Zeitverzugs durch den Verkehrsunfall verzichten. Das Tagesprogramm war aber auch ohne diesen Besuch voll genug. Abends gab es dann noch einen malerischen Sonnenuntergang. Und für den ausgefallenen Besuch des Landwirtschaftsbetriebes erhielten wir noch während der Reise 10 € pro Person als Entschädigung ausgezahlt.      Read more

      Lauter alte Steine in Pompeii

      Schon ganz früh werde ich wach, muss wohl am frühzeitigen zu Bett gehen liegen... Auf jeden Fall habe ich genug Zeit um dem Sonnenaufgang zu zusehen. Der Blick aus dem Dachzelt ist fantastisch, direkt gegenüber liegt der ,im Morgenroth erglühende, Vesuv und dazwischen das Meer. In aller Seelenruhe kann ich duschen und Kaffetrinken. Und es ist immer noch nicht mal um 8 Uhr morgens. Wir brechen halb neun zum Shuttlebus in die Stadt auf. Leicht panisch, weil wir befürchten, dass wir noch FFP2Masken für den Bus und Zug brauchen. Brauchen wir nicht! Sagt die Dame an der Rezeption. Also haben wir jetzt noch etwas Wartezeit auf den Bus zu vertrödeln.
      Der Bus bringt uns in die Stadt in die Nähe des Bahnhofs, knapp 10 Minuten zu Fuss sind es dann aber doch. Der Zug bringt uns direkt an den Eingang von der Archäologischen Ausgrabung von Pompeii.Für 32€ haben wir 4 Tickets für die ganze Familie gekauft.
      Nun erobern wir die Stadt auf eigene Faust. Kreuz und quer ziehen wir durch die Straßen und besichtigen unzählige Häuser. Nur Das Amphitheater konnten wir nicht so richtig besichtigen, dort wird gerade für ein Konzert aufgebaut. Auf dem Rückweg nehmen wir noch einen Palast und zwei Häuser mit, dann sind wir durch. Nicht mit Pompeii aber mit uns.... Wir verlassen die Ausgrabung und steigen wieder in den Zug, nicht ohne vorher noch eine Packung Hirnfrost ( Slushi Eis) für alle zu kaufen.
      In Sorrent kaufen wir noch üppig fürs Abendessen und den 3. Weltkrieg ein. Und gehen dann seeehe zügig zum Shuttlebus. Der sollte aus meiner Erinnerung immer zur vollen Stunde abfahren, tut er aber nicht... Sondern nachmittags immer zur halben Stunde. Also war mein Infarkt Training umsonst und meine Frau sieht mich wie immer mitleidvoll an.
      Kurz vor sechs Uhr abends sind wir wieder am Platz, völlig fertig aber glücklich angekommen.      Read more

      Sorento Walkthrough🏊🏻‍♂️🛵🚘

      Σηκωθήκαμε μέσα στην όρεξη για να πάμε Capri αλλά τελικά δεν τα καταφέραμε.Η μέρα ξεκίνησε αρκετά άσχημα αλλά τελικά άμα έχεις θετική σκέψη και λίγη τύχη όλα θα σου πάνε τέλεια.Πήγαμε να βγάλουμε εισιτήρια για Capri και έπρεπε σονι και καλά να πληρώσουμε 120 για 3 άτομα πήγαινε έλα με αναχώρηση από Sorento στις 13:30 και αυστηρά επιστροφή στις 17:45.Όποτε ρίξαμε άκυρο και ψάξαμε και βρήκαμε φουσκωτό 6 μέτρο για πάρτη μας με λίγα παραπάνω λεφτά αλλά για την επόμενη μέρα από τος 9 το πρωί μέχρι τις 6 το απόγευμα🚤🤸🏻🤸🏻‍♀️.Σούπερ.Επομένως όλη την επόμενη μέρα την περάσαμε στο Sorento το οποίο δεν είχαμε γυρίσει και αποδείχθηκε αρκετά όμορφη πόλη με πολλές επιλογές.Αρκετά δύσκολο να βρεις να κανείς μπάνιο στην Ευρύτερή περιοχή σαν άνθρωπος όποτε βρήκαμε ένα ξενοδοχείο το οποίο επέτρεπε ελεύθερα την είσοδο στο κοινό για να κάνουμε μπάνιο στην πισίνα του.Σχετικά παλιό το ξενοδοχείο αλλά μας χάρισε αρκετές όμορφες εικόνες και δεν μας κόστισε τίποτα απόλυτος πράγμα τρελό για την περιοχή.Στον γυρισμό κάναμε ένα στοπ για junk food σε ότι κοντινότερο μπορέσαμε και βρήκαμε στα δικά μας πιτόγυρα αλλά έμοιαζε περισσότερο με sandwich🥪🍔.Για σβήσιμο κάναμε μια τελευταία βόλτα στα μαγαζιά για ψώνια και γυρίσαμε στο ξενοδοχείο για ξεκούραση γιατί αύριο η μέρα θα είναι φωτιά 🔥🔥🔥🚤.Read more

      First Night

      We arrived at the hotel at 3pm and decided to have a Wander around to see what there was at the hotel. We have the most amazing sea view, and although it was hazy, later in the day it cleared off to reveal Mount Versuvious in the distance. We had lunch by the pool and chilled in the room for an hour before heading into Sorrento by the shuttle bus.

      We had the most gorgeous evening walking around the shops and the tiny streets. Admiring the open churches and impressive local crafts. We found a little Restaurant - Taverna Dell-800. Dad, Lucy and I had authentic pasta dishes and Mum had Veal. The food was lush and we indulged in a local white wine. For €12 per litre!!!

      Walking back to the bus, we stopped off to try local Cannoli, I had pistachio and lemon and they were amazing!
      Once back at the hotel we sat on the balcony watching some fireworks across the bay, absorbing all the lights seen from across the sea.

      Tomorrow we are up early, and headed to Pompeii!      Read more

      Spontaneously in Sorrento

      We didn’t pay careful attention to the train schedule and found we would have to wait quite a while to get to Paestum, where we were planning to see some Greek ruins. Instead, we hopped on a train to the seaside town of Sorrento. It’s an interesting mix of tourists and fashion enthusiasts. We sat on a bench near what we supposed was an exclusive hotel overlooking the sea. We watched guests arriving in Mercedes and BMWs (not driving themselves, of course), and being greeted like celebrities (maybe they were!). We strolled the cliff edge overlooking the sea, and wandered narrow streets. The place is jam-packed with small lemon groves—like the size of our backyard, but everyone had them. Of course we had to try a lemonade or two from a street vendor.

      It was a beautiful sunny day for our outing. Even better, we found that the ferry could get us back to Naples in less time and with more comfort than the train. The view of Vesuvius from out on the water shows just how much of the top has been blown off (probably not just from the eruption that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in the 1st century).
