      Als kleine tussenstop vanuit Kyoto doen wij Himeji aan. Hier is een van spectaculairste kastelen van Japan en dus wel een middagje waard.

      Het kasteel komt uit 1400 en is nog steeds het origineel. Opmerkelijk omdat in de tweede wereldoorlog is een groot deel van de stad verwoest door bombardementen en dit kasteel als een van de weinige gebouwen nog overeind stond.

      Tegenwoordig staat het als vele andere tempels en kastelen van Japan op de UNESCO lijst van werelderfgoederen.      Read more

      Day 24

      Himeji and Kobe

      We decided to do a day trip from Kyoto to the cities of Himeji and Kobe as recommended by so many people here. We took the Shinkansen JR train to Himeji which only took about 55 minutes, to complete the 130 kilometre journey.

      Firstly, we visited the beautiful Himeji Castle. We had to take off our shoes to go inside the main keep and walked through the six floors to the top with great views across the city. Then we went into the Nishi-no-maru Bailey where we walked through the long corridor and learned about the history of how the castle was built. Next door to the castle were the Koko-en gardens, which was made up of lots a little gardens with various different themes.

      After lunch in Himeji we got a ‘super rapid express’ train to Kobe city, which took only 15 minutes, to cover the 60 kilometres. In the lovely afternoon sunshine, we walked up the steep hill to see the Nunobiki Waterfalls. We then took a metro train across the city to Fukuju Sake Brewery. Kobe is famous for having lots of sake breweries in a small area. Sake is a Japanese rice wine, usually 15% alcohol. In this little brewery, we learned about how sake is brewed and how the more rice that is used, the more expensive the sake is. We then got to taste different strengths and types of sake wine.

      The most famous thing Kobe is known for, is its beef steak. So we booked into Ishidaya restaurant for some Kobe beef. This was a Teppanyaki style restaurant where we had our own personal chef. We ordered a set menu of sirloin and tenderloin beef. The starter of roasted Kobe beef and crab was served first, before we had mushroom soup. Our chef then came out to start his spectacle. He first laid out the various vegetables including potato jelly, Chinese cabbage, Japanese vegetables and stuffed mushrooms. He then poured out the various salts and sauces onto our plates and explained the best way to eat them with the steak. We also got a serving of boiled and fried rice. The meat was lovely and tender but a little salty for my liking. We finished off dinner with apple pie and ice cream for dessert.

      It was a lovely day and great to see another side of Japanese and experience some local culture and cuisine. It was one of my favourite days of the trip.      Read more

      Day 9

      An island, a castle and a fast train

      An early start as we took the ferry to Miyajima Island known for its 'floating' vermilion torii, which becomes partially submerged at high tide and Itsukushima Shrine (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). There are walking tracks and pagodas and sika deer everywhere. Could have stayed much longer than the 2 hours but we had quite a bit travel to do.

      Next stop was the magnificent Himeji Castle, the largest surviving example of a traditional Japanese castle. The shape of the roof is said to resemble a bird in flight so is often referred to as the White Heron Castle. The climb to the top of the keep consisted of 7 storeys of steep narrow stairways that I found the safest way to come downstairs was backwards, like a ladder. Fantastic building.

      After the castle we had to experience the bullet train, or shinkansen. It was only a brief 30 trip to Osaka.

      Finally we had an optional tour of a sukiyaki dinner. Fine strips of wagyu beef, pork, tofu and vegetables cooked on the table in front of you. A nice end to a tiring day.      Read more

      Burg Himejijo und Kobe Beef

      Heute habe ich vor allem zwei Dinge geplant: ich möchte die Burg Himejijo besuchen und danach in Kobe das weltbeste Kobe Beef verköstigen.
      Himejijo ist das erste UNESCO Welterbe in Japan und eine der drei Must See Burgen Japans. Im Gegensatz zur Burg Kumamoto, ist diese Burg weitestgehend noch im Original Zustand. Der innenraum ist mehrheitlich leer und so komme ich schnell durch die sieben Stockwerke. Nach etwa zwei Stunden bin ich schon wieder im Zug in Richtung Kobe.
      Natürlich habe ich mich zuvor ausgiebig mit der Wahl des Restaurants auseinandergesetzt, weshalb ich bei meiner Ankunft in Kobe direkt ins Restaurant gehen kann.
      Gekonnt bestelle ich das "200g Kobe Beef Chefs special" und dazu ein lokales Bier. Der Koch nickt anerkennend und macht sich an die Arbeit. Die Speisen schmecken vortrefflich und das Fleisch ist butter zart. Das einmalige Erlebnis kostet mich 18000 Yen (eine normale Mahlzeit kostet 1000 - 2500 Yen). Ich finde, es hat sich gelohnt. Zufrieden kehre ich nach Osaka zurück und kann nun auch in meinem Hostel einchecken. Im Wohnzimmer lerne ich dann eine nette Deutsche kennen und nach einer kleinen Plauderei beschliessen wir, zusammen auszugehen. Wir besuchen zwei kleine Bars in der Nähe und geniessen den Abend.       Koi Fische & Milchramen

      Nach der Besichtigung der Burg spazierten wir noch ein wenig im benachbarten Koko-en Park und bestaunten die prächtigen Koi-Karpfen.

      Zum Mittagessen besuchten wir die klitzekleine Ramen Bar "Koba & More". Es gibt dort nur 6 Sitzplätze. Koba-san war ein sehr netter Host und hat mit uns Englisch gesprochen. Er wohnt in seinem Restaurant und hat dort eine riesige Jazz CD-Mediathek. Die Bar ist sehr gemütlich eingerichtet. Auf der Wand hängt ein Hinweis, dass Koba-san nicht gerne Instagram Süchtlinge hat und dass man ihn doch bitte um Erlaubnis bitten soll, Fotos zu machen. Er war sehr erfreut, als ich ihn gefragt habe, ob ich Bilder machen darf. 😋 Das Essen war köstlich! Wir haben Milchramen und Gyozas bestellt. Die Milchramensuppe schmeckte wie Carbonara – eine überraschend gelungene Kombination! 🍜🥛Read more

      Himeji

      Himeji - die Stadt ist aufgrund ihres Reichtums an Geschichte und Kultur eines der attraktivsten Reiseziele Japans. Himeji ist vor allem für seine atemberaubende Burg bekannt, die seit 1993 zumUNESCO-Weltkulturerbe gehört und als eine der schönsten und besterhaltenen Burgen Japans gilt. Die Burg Himeji wird aufgrund ihr Ähnlichkeit mit dem eleganten Vogel auch als „Burg des weißen Reihers“ bezeichnet. Sie bildet den Höhepunkt mittelalterlicher japanische Festungsbaukunst und zählt zu den nationalen Kulturschätzen Japans. Sie hat die Jahrhunderte ohne bedeutende Schäden durch Kriege, Erdbeben oder Feuer überstanden. Direkt neben der Burg Himeji liegt der japanische Garten Koko-en. Dort lässt sich die traditionelle japanische Gartengestaltung bestaunen. Bei schönem Wetter ist das alles sicherlich recht reizvoll. Nicht aber bei strömenden Regen und Kälte!!!       Hotel Himeji Castle Grandvrio

      I booked this hotel last minute as it had an onsen but still reasonably priced. Was $150 for 2 nights.
      The onsen itself was great, they had a large bath daiyokujo, a carbonic acid bath Tansanburo, an outdoor bath rotenburo and a cold bath mizoburo. It also had a dry and steam sauna with the steam one having showers in it which you can use. There were also 3 bathtubs for private use. I probably spent an hour there without a privacy towel, still feeling a little weird but getting used to it.
      They had a stone sauna area as well but that cost $6. Maybe I'll check it out tomorrow.
      I had a little look upstairs and found a comic room full of Japanese manga, sadly I could not find any in English to enjoy with the other people.
      The breakfast was a smorgasbord style with them making us hand sanitise, then put on gloves so they stuck to our hands??? I looked at my first course and realised it was all meat so I went back for a decent sized salad. I also realised I have been eating like a pigeon, if there is food I'll eat heaps otherwise I can just skip meals if I don't have the time.      Read more

      Hoy el día empezaba cansado. Muy cansado. Pablo y su obsesión enfermiza por el fútbol me despertaron a las 5 de la madrugada porque quería ver un partido y se puso la alarma. 2 veces. Me costó muchísimo volver a dormirme, y acabé consiguiendo dormir cerca de las 7 de la mañana. Me dormí hasta las 8.20, que me volvió a despertar él. Con todo, nos fuimos a pasar el día a Himeji, una localidad famosa por su castillo 🏯 del siglo XVI.

      Estaba a unos 45min de Kyoto y cuando llegamos a media mañana nos fuimos directamente a ver el castillo. Era una fortaleza defensiva del complejo amurallado, con 6 plantas de altura, todo de madera por dentro y que andamos descalzos por sus suelos de madera.

      Seguimos paseando por el recinto y por un jardín típico japonés antes de ir a comer. El sitio de la comida fue un acierto, la verdad. Probablemente mejor relación calidad-cantidad/precio hasta ahora. Me pedí 2 cuencos de arroz con carne por 12€, brutal. Luego disfruté de un helado de matcha, con un sabor muy suave, y con vistas al castillo (ver vídeo).

      Paseamos un poco más y ya nos volvimos a Kyoto. Nos duchamos en el hotel y nos fuimos a la zona de Pontocho una vez más. Nuestra intención era ir al Kichi Kichi Omurice, pero resulta que sólo se puede mediante reserva, y no había hueco para ninguno de los días que estamos aquí. Así que acabamos en un izakaya de nuevo con pinchitos de carne y tripas varias.

      Me sigue sorprendiendo el poco inglés que hablan.

      Himeji und Kōbe

      Schon früh am morgen bin ich an diesem Tag nach Himeji gefahren, hier soll die schönste Burg von Japan sein, dort angekommen sieht man schon, wie die Burg über der Stadt thront. Im Innenleben eher schlicht, bietet die Burg jedoch einen tollen Ausblick und der Garten ist auch schön und wie immer in Japan sehr gepflegt. Weiter geht es zur Hafenstadt Kōbe, weltberühmt für das Rindfleisch, so kostete ich logischerweise auch davon und ja, es zerfließt förmlich auf der Zunge 🤤. Der Mehrstöckige Kräutergarten mit Gewächshaus und tollem Panorama ist hier jedoch neben dem Shinto-Schrein das Highlight! Weiter nach Osaka ging es rein ins Nachtleben, wieder lernte ich die verschiedensten Leuten kennen und yes, Osakas Nachtleben hat einiges zu bieten 🥳.Read more
