      Petra!

      August 23, 2022 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

      Miles: 9.2 Steps: 20272
      Flights stairs: 61 !!

We went to Petra today. It’s quite a hike - surprised me, I had no idea it took so much to see it. And today, we only saw about half of the site.

We made it to the “treasury” - to me, made famous by Indiana Jones and the last crusade. Anyone else? Shows how cultured I am. 😂 And then we took a side trail to be able to view the treasury from above - it was 725 stairs to the top! (yes I counted every one of them). Luckily we went out early so wasn’t too warm for most of it - mid 70’s at the start, mid 80’s at the end. The main trail to get in was about 2 miles each way and then the side trail we took was another 2 each way. All the hikes we’ve done so far are rated easy or moderate - todays was rated hard, and it was. But we made it to the top!

When we got there we found a person had constructed a “hut” that completely blocked the view. You could only see said view if you came into the hut and purchased something to drink. Quite the entrepreneur. At that point we had little choice after hiking for 2 miles just to see the view so we paid out the $6 for two water bottles, sat down and enjoyed what we worked so hard to see. 😂

So far, Jordan has been a joy to see. And for the most part the people are kind, polite and friendly. Today tho, was shocked when a man asked me “how many camels would you like for your baby?” Yep .. someone offered to buy my daughter. 😳 For camels, nonetheless. A waiter also asked Jordan, with me sitting right there, “does your mom like sweets? Most old ladies here don’t.” Yep .. I was called an old lady, to my face. 😢 Someone also wanted to know why Jordan wasn’t married yet - what was “wrong” with her to not be married by 23. Interesting times.

      Eins der neuen sieben Weltwunder

      March 9, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

      Petra by Night

      March 15, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Wir gönnen uns ein besonderes Erlebnis:
      Petra by Night

Sehr beeindruckend.

      Petra, Teil 1

      March 17, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

      Petra, Teil 2

      March 17, 2023 in Jordan

      Day 44 - Petra!

      October 21, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

A short 5 minute bus journey down to Petra this morning. It was an early start (06:45) but worth it to avoid the crowds. We made it to the Treasury (the building in Indiana Jones) at around 8 o clock and then had plenty of time to see the rest of the city and the monastery at the top. All in we climbed 700m today in a total distance of around 8 miles. Quite a big walk! To top it off we did actually get our camel photos and ride today! Nb: Jane’s camel was very grumpy - didn’t want to stand up and then kept snapping at mine! An amazing day all round!
(Lots of frankincense and myrrh for sale - never knew these were resins from certain types of trees. The stall owner in the photo was on Joanna Lumley's Silk Road and Travelman)

      Alles nur Fassade

      April 5 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Read more

      Petra by night!

      June 27, 2022 in Jordan ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Petra by day and by night

      May 11, 2022 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

A big day of walking to visit this iconic site. Our hotel is close to the entrance of Petra and from there it is a 2km walk to the Treasury. I loved walking through the Siq which is a narrow chasm, about 1.2km long that opens onto the Treasury. The towering walls and fantastic natural colours in the rocks was quite special.

At the Treasury, Brad (and several other group members) climbed to a viewpoint with the aid of one of the local Bedouin guides. I declined because I'm carrying a foot injury after a fall a couple of days ago (typical of me to fall over - if there is uneven path, I'll find it) - besides, that's what I bring Brad along for - he is the photographer!

There is a lot more to Petra than just the Treasury. Walking around the Treasury there is the remains of an entire city complete with shops, tombs, residential area, palaces and amphitheatre. There was also the option to walk to viewpoints of the Monastery and Sacrificial place and those that did them found it quite exhausting. Even the walk back to the hotel was a steady incline all the way - funny, didn't seem to notice we were going downhill all the way in - and we were glad to get back to our hotel.

That evening we had the option of going to Petra by night which meant walking back down to the Treasury along a candlelit pathway. The activity was ok but could have been improved greatly - probably not really worth the 17 dinars (about $34AUD) pp, but as we will never be in Jordan again it is just another experience to add to the list.

Before leaving Petra the next morning we visited the Petra Museum and also Little Petra before one last photo stop overlooking the whole of the Petra site. On our way to Wadi Rum for a night in a Bedouin desert camp which should be interesting.

      Dag 6- Wereldwonderwaardig

      August 21, 2023 in Jordan ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Eens aangekomen deden we eerst Little Petra, waarna we richting de Monastery stapten.
      Xxx
