      Sopot

      Gdańsk - Day 2

      2 de agosto de 2023, Polônia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Decided to sleep in after the late night. The restaurant i wanted to go to didn't open until 2pm so decided to ascend the 405 stairs to the st marys bell tower summit first. Then walked down the harbor front for quite a while and eventually to that restaurant finally. Had a really interesting local herring dish and then a very long and needed nap.

Found some yummy dumplings/perogies near my hotel and sipped a few beers while catching up with friends and family back home. Missed my backpacking meetup today which is a bit too bad but needed to recharge too.

Was soooo close to buying an amazing piece of carving artwork i found on the many street tents selling all kinds of cool stuff. But the price tag was fairly dear.

      Danzig

Gdansk - Old Town 1; The Royal Way

      23 de maio de 2022, Polônia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Gdansk is a city on the Baltic coast of northern Poland with a complex history, having had periods of Polish, Prussian and German rule, as well as periods of autonomy as a free city-state.

An important shipbuilding port, from 1918 to 1939, Gdansk lay in the disputed Polish Corridor between Poland and Germany, the political tensions here culminated in the Invasion of Poland in 1939 and WWII.  The city was destroyed during WWII, but is now painstakingly rebuilt.

We start our exploration by walking the Royal Way along ul. Dluga (Long Lane) and Dlugi Targ (Long Market).  Along Long Lane we pass the Highland Gate, marking the route's beginning, the Prison Tower (now housing the Amber Museum), the Golden Gate (ceremonial gateway to the city) and pass many beautiful, tall and narrow houses built in Flemish style before reaching the Main Town Hall.  We visit this; it is now the seat of the Gdansk Museum and has reconstructed interiors - the Red Room is of particular note and has a beautiful ceiling.

The road widens as we reach the Long Market and Artus Court - the historic meeting place of the town's elite - with the bronze statue of Neptune's Fountain in front of it and the Golden House, with a fine facade, beside it; the Royal Way ends at Green Gate, built as a residence of visiting Polish Kings.

Day 12 - The Carer in Gdańsk

      10 de março, Polônia ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

The breakfast this morning at Hotel Gromada in Warsaw was the worst yet on the trip. The place was heaving and the very slow machine produced coffee that was disgusting. I had a bread roll with jam and some tasteless watermelon.

The Magic Buses rolled out of Warsaw at 10.00am after making double sure that everyone had their phones. The journey took us along dual carriageways most of the way of the 4 hour journey. We stopped for a comfort break at a service station, where I took the opportunity to wish my mother a Happy Mother’s Day.

After checking in to the Hotel Scandic in Gdańsk, some people were going off to do their laundry. One of the girls, Irish Lindsey, later that afternoon sent her roommate Priscilla a photo of her and Justin Sullivan who she had just met in a local launderette. He even does his own washing!!

Lee, Priscilla, Lex, Ramon and I went off to explore Gdańsk Old Town. It was only a short walk, but it took much longer with Lee ambling along behind because of his multiple sclerosis.

The buildings in the Old Town were very quaint. We visited several churches, the Amber Quarter and then we arrived at the enormous St Mary’s Basilica. It was free entry to the Basilica and took quite awhile to walk around it. The highlight was its astronomical clock. Before leaving it was suggested that we climb the 400 steps to the top of its tower. There was no way that Lee was going to be able to do that, so I did the honourable thing and took him to a local bar for a beer.

We were joined by the others whilst on our 2nd beer in a very pleasant little cafe. Lex got up and said he was just popping out to the cannabis shop to buy a puffer for someone else in the group. Lee asked Lex to get him one as well. Upon Lex’s return, Lee started puffing on his newly acquired puffer, but moaned he couldn’t feel a high, so he kept on sucking. Apparently the puffer was supposed to have the relaxing qualities without the high.

By now we were all hungry & were looking forward to some traditional Polish food. We researched restaurants on our phones and chose GVARA a posh Polish restaurant. We all had the same starter, black pudding with caramelised pear, chokeberry sauce and bread which was delicious. For mains, Lex and I had braised beef cheek with port wine, homemade potato dumplings and caramelised beetroots. It was superb, the beef cheeks were so tender that they melted in the mouth. The others had wild boar, pork chops or stuffed dumplings.

The only drama occurred when Ramon leant over the table to taste Lex’s beef cheek, but accidentally knocked over Lee’s freshly poured glass of wine straight onto Lee’s dinner. His pork chops, potatoes and sauerkraut were swimming in red wine. The staff took his dinner away, but returned with his dinner now with a red tinge. Luckily Lee didn’t mention it again……..not. Ramon paid for Lee’s dinner including his wine.

After dinner, Lex and Ramon decided they were going to an Italian restaurant to meet up with some of our group who were celebrating a birthday with some other NMA fans that had following the tour separately.

The remaining 3 of us chose to return to the hotel. When we got outside the cold fresh air hit Lee and he suddenly became as high as a kite. He admitted that he had sucked way too much on his puffer. As a result it was a painfully slow walk back to the hotel with Lee shuffling along very slowly behind. I felt like his carer!!

After a quick nightcap in the hotel bar we called it a night.

      Ulica Mariacka (Mariacka Street)

      12 de setembro de 2019, Polônia ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

      Clipped from: https://www.inyourpocket.com/gdansk/ul-mariacka…
Locally known as simply Mariacka, this cobbled street lined with amber galleries and cafés, runs from St. Mary's Basilica to the Motława River. It was badly damaged during WWII, though unlike other streets in Old Town Gdańsk which were reconstructed with new materials, ul. Mariacka was pieced back together with salvaged-debris from elsewhere in the neighbourhood. The most notable relics on this street are the ornate gargoyle rain gutters on the gabled terraced houses, known locally as Rzygacze (English: Spewers). The exquisite detail of the railings, front stoops and stone terraces lining the street are characteristic of Gdańsk Old Town. Gdańsk is the amber capital of the Baltic states and you will see many stalls selling this curious mineral all over Tri-city. However, ul. Mariacka is where the most knowledgable and prestigious amber dealers can be found. Take a look at Galeria Wydra, Salonik Pod Skrzydlatym Aniołem and Amberstyl just around the corner. Some of the best coffee houses in Tri-city reside here as well, most notably Drukarnia in the old printing house. Next door there is the charming abode of Café Kamienica and Literacka is a cosy wine bar that offers wild boar and other impressive items on their food menu. ul. Mariacka is a must visit in Gdańsk!Leia mais
