      Douro Valley

      We woke up to a cloudy, overcast day for our journey east, up the Douro Valley. Amongst low cloud, the first stop was Amarante, where the local market was in full swing.

      We followed the river, with it's steep banks lined with terraced vineyards, and stopped in Pinháo for lunch. There were 2 river cruise boats in dock, but they must have been out wine tasting, as the small town was very quiet.

      Rui made some calls to fit us in for a tasting at a winery that made table wines as well as port (many only make port) and we visited Quinta do Bomfim for a very relaxing afternoon of tasting on their wisteria covered pergola overlooking the Douro River.

      Accommodation tonight is in Peso da Régua where we had dinner at a non-touristy restaurant (ie not on the waterfront). The staff spoke no English (the same amount as our Portuguese), so we had much laughter communicating our order. The staff always bring out olives and bread at the start of the meal - they are not complimentary, but added to the bill unless you send them back - and tonight we also received a mystery bowl... of chicken gizzards.       Peso da Regua

      Viseu was marvellous but is surrounded by hills. Geographically we reached a the high point today- possibly for the whole trip? otherwise the high point was an interrupted 30km/ 800m descent to Peso. Here we join the Douro valley and will spend a couple of days exploring the area- lots of vineyards 🍷🤪. The descent took us through Lamego and a great Tapas bar halfway up the outrageous baroque staircase up to the Igreja.Lue lisää

      Pochino

      Peso is where we split from the n2 and I start to head east ( and Helen will head west to Porto and home). The Douro valley is a "must see" destination with terraced vineyards cascading down ( unfortunately ) steep hillsides. The Douro cuts deeply through mountains and drains a large part of the NE plains of Spain.the complex geography means a lot of steep ups and downs: not ideal bike touring country. So i've done todays 100k/2000m unlaiden and got the amazing "bucket list " train ride back to the start. Ride with gps came up with some outrageous route choices, including an extensive precipitous cobbled section- and a tarmac section that ( I think) will be the steepest road I've riden down. Good news though- from the last hill I could see Spain!!! Saturdays job.Lue lisää

      Bahn nach Vila Real

      In Vila Real de Santo Antonio bin ich gestartet und nun wieder Vila Real - eine königliche Stadt. Die beiden heissen so, weil jeweils ein König beschlossen hatte, da muss eine Stadt hin.
      Der Weg dahin verlief durchgehend auf dem ehemaligen Bahntrasse. Also schön regelmässig konstant steigend. Ein paar Geisterbahnhöfe und ein zeitgenössisches eindrückliches Brückenbauwerk.Lue lisää

      Portwein für Anfänger

      Der Tag begann heute im Portweinmuseum in Regua. Dort wurde alles über die Geschichte und die Technik des Weinbaus im Dourotal erläutert. Die Engländer haben den Portwein erst so richtig populär gemacht. Er war lange der Exportschlager der Portugiesen. Es gibt weissen und roten, meistens süßen, aber auch trockenen Portwein. Dann gibt es blendet , also gemischten, oder sortenreinen Portwein. Diesen gibt es dann als 10, 20, 30, oder 40 Jahre alten zu kaufen. Mein Geschmack ist er nicht gerade, da meistens sehr süß. Aber inzwischen gibt es mehr und mehr ausgezeichnete Rotweine aus dem Douro Tal. Alles ist recht hochpreisig, so zwischen 10-100 Euro pro Flasche. Wir waren den Rest des Tages im Tal unterwegs. Kleine Straßen, viele Kurven, schwindelerregende Ausblicke. Wenn man die Weinterassen sieht, bekommt man eine Ahnung davon wieviel Arbeit es macht das in Ordnung zu halten. Jetzt haben wir einen ruhigen Stellplatz direkt am Fluss. Morgen geht es schon wieder weiter Richtung Süden.Lue lisää

      Douro Valley

      This is the spectacularly beautiful heart of the wine industry located up river from Porto. The scenery is so extraordinary that the 1st 6 pictures all show it. They are taken from various perspectives: from the deck of a traditional river boat to high on the hillsides on both sides of the river. The views are considered to be some of the best in the world.
      The 7th picture is of Pinhão, often thought of as the center of the district. This was taken from the traditional boat.
      The last 3 pictures were taken at Quinta do Seixo. A quinta is a farm or vineyard where, in this case, the grapes for local wine and port are grown. Both table wine and port are produced. And there is a small olive oil industry, too, using olives from the trees separating quintas.
      I'm told that many of the producers here still crush the grapes in the traditional way, by foot. At Quinta do Seixo, crushing is done robotically in the vats in the 8th picture. The mechanism is visible at the rear of the picture. The 9th picture is some port aging in oak barrels in their cellar. The last picture is the Sandeman logo. I'm told that the silhouette is intended to reflect both Spanish and Portuguese tradition as the business began with sherry in Spain and expanded to port.      Lue lisää

      Portweinregion

      Heute steht ein Tagesausflug auf dem Programm. In diesem Stopp besuchten wir die Portweinregion 🍷

      Interessant fand ich, dass die Trauben der roten Portweine hier noch manuell zerstampft werden. Das findet so im September/Oktober rum statt und dauert ca. von 21:00 - 1:00. Das sei lustig und immer ein schönes Fest. Interessierte Mithelfer sind vom Weinbauer herzlich eingeladen 😁Lue lisää

      Mondim de Basto

      Une splendide journée ensoleillée et très chaude !!! Nous partons vers Amarante, une magnifique petite ville. C'est beau et tout près de l'eau et du célèbre pont de São Gonçalo, mais c'est chaud. Environ 31 degrés. Jamais je n'aurais cru qu'en septembre nous aurions encore de telles chaleurs. On est à la recherche d'un restaurant, mais vue qu'il se fait tard, il y a trop d'attente. On doit aller vers un café où ce sera plus rapide. En attendant notre repas, Samuel explore les environs et il revient voulant nous montrer absolument ce qu'il avait découvert. C'était en fait l'église de Sao Gonçalo. Nous y sommes entrés histoire de voir la beauté de cette église.

      Ensuite, nous avons pris la route vers Mondim de Basto. C'est une région et une ville, mais on y trouve aussi un sanctuaire en haut d'une montagne conique. On y monte avec le camper. Nicolas a un peu la frousse... C'est quand même étroit... Ça peut être fatal évidemment s'il arrive quoi que ce soit, mais rassurez-vous, on est prudents! On se rend au sommet sans problème, mais rendu là-haut, c'est plutôt le manque de stationnement qui est problématique...

      On se stationne près d'un petit kiosque. On lui cache la vue solidement, mais elle me dit que pour 5 minutes, il n'y a pas de problème. Donc, on admire la vue, on fait vite et hop, on est déjà parti! Tout ça, pour 5 minutes. Hehe. Mais c'était très beau !!

      Direction maintenant un camping pour la nuit. Mais il fait tellement chaud qu'on veut absolument se baigner. Hummmm une plage. On recherche plage et 20 minutes plus loin, nous sommes là. Près d'une rivière plutôt. Vraiment trop cool comme spot et il y a un terrain pour passer la nuit !! Parfait pour cette nuit :) Presque seuls au monde près de l'eau, on fait trempette et après on se fait un pique-nique pour finir la journée. Super!      Lue lisää

      Vallée de Douro

      Une autre belle journée commence. Nous roulons par contre beaucoup pour nous rendre à la première escale de la journée : le Miradouro de São Lourenco. Malheureusement, ce n'était pas un incontournable, la vue depuis le mirador est bien malgré tout, mais pas pour autant de route! 1h30 avec des flos, ouin.... Bon. Mais la route est si belle. Parmi des montagnes à perte de vues et des vignes à en plus finir. C'est beau !!! Nous dînons au Miradouro et ensuite, direction la vallée de Douro pour les innombrables vignobles. En chemin on arrête (forcément!) à un vignoble pour faire une rapide dégustation et acheter quelques bouteilles avant de repartir. On allait à Pinhão pour faire la petite croisière sur le fleuve de Douro. C'était très joli, mais pas du tout reposant avec un petit Félix qui voulait toucher à tout !!

      Depuis le bateau, on avait une superbe vue sur les vignobles avoisinants. Une belle petite activité pour nous faire découvrir la vallée dont le fleuve (Douro) s'étend en fait sur 940km en partant de Porto pour finir en Espagne! La zone du Haut-Douro a été déclarée Patrimoine mondial par l'UNESCO en 2001. C'est une des régions viticoles les plus importantes en Europe, mais aussi au monde, ce n’est pas rien!

      Après notre petite croisière, on fait quelques emplettes et en s'informant, il semble qu'on puisse s'installer pour la nuit de l'autre côté du pont. Nous allons donc nous trouver un spot pour la nuit juste devant un petit bateau de croisière. On se fait à souper puis Sam et Jess vont voir la fin du coucher de soleil sur la ville et le fleuve.       Weinverkostung 🍷

      Gegen Mittag ging die Entdeckungstour los, wir fuhren von Peso da Regua nach Pinhao am Douro Fluss entlang. Unser erstes Ziel war ein Aussichtspunkt mit Blick auf den Douro und den Weinhängen. (Double viewpoint De Loivos)

      Der Ausblick war sehr schön und wir genossen dabei die Sonne. ☀️

      Bei Google Maps fanden wir einen Aussichtspunkt mit einer Schaukel und machten uns auf den Weg dorthin. Der Weg wurde immer schmaler und eng und am Schluss standen wir vor einem Privatgrundstück. 🤭😆
      Wir drehten um und parkten auf der Seite. Wir gingen nicht auf das Privatgrundstück, aber der Ort hier war wunderschön mit Ausblick auf den Douro. Wir spazierten ein wenig in die Weinberge und ließen die Drohne fliegen.

      Auf den Weg zum Stellplatz für die Nacht fuhren wir durch malerische Täler Umgeben von Weinhängen, wo die Blätter langsam umfärben.🍁

      In einen kleinen Ort hielten wir bei einen Wein Store an. Vor 4 Jahren kauften wir in Portugal einen Portwein, aber der schmeckte uns gar nicht deshalb ließen wir uns diesmal beraten.
      Das Geschäft sah so was von Nobel aus wir dachten, da zahlen wir jetzt Unmengen aber dem war nicht so. Die Verkäuferin war super nett und ging auf unseren Wunsch nach einem süßlichen Wein bestens ein. 🍇 Wir durften probieren und nahmen einen weißen Portwein und ein roten Moscatel Wein mit. 🍷

      Weiter ging es über schmale Straßen zum Schlafplatz, der auch bei einem Aussichtspunkt war. Tino wurde von einen älteren Portugiesen angequatscht, anfangs wussten wir nicht ganz, was er von uns will, aber mit Google Übersetzer und viel Vorstellungskraft konnten wir uns irgendwie verständigen. Bei dem Aussichtspunkt steht eine kleine Kirche, die er betreut dadurch trifft er oft auf Menschen aus der ganzen Welt und sammelt deren Telefonnummern. 📞
      Er war ein sehr netter, freundlicher Mann und zeigte uns dir Kirche, wo er ganz stolz war. 😊
      Außerdem war dir Aussicht sehr schön von dort oben. 🙂 (Viewpoint of São Leonardo de Galafura)
