    Friday in Faro

    February 22 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

From our new base at Campsite Ria Formosa, near Tavira in the eastern Algarve, we jumped on the bike to visit Faro, the capital of the Algarve and a place that is sometimes overlooked by visitors who just pass through heading to and from the airport.

We spent our time wandering around the cobbled streets of the old town and around the marina. Within the medieval walls the centrepiece is the cathedral, completed in 1251 but, like everything else down here, it was badly damaged in the 1755 earthquake and todays version is a mixture of gothic, renaissance and baroque architecture. The interior was beautifully decorated with tiles, painted wood and a gilded alter. The baroque organ was being played and added atmosphere to our visit. We think all churches and cathedrals should have music playing or choirs singing in between masses. It really makes a difference! The cathedral also houses a small museum of priestly vestments, chalices and grisly relics of St. Bonifaces forearms. However, more macabre was to come outside with a shrine built of monks skulls and bones! We climbed the tower and came out onto a terrace housing the bells with magnificent views across the city and the Rio Formosa Nature Reserve, where the sand banks would make for tricky navigation.

The square in front of the cathedral was lined with orange trees that were in full blossom and their fragrance filled the air as bees and insects gorged on the nectar.

We had lunch outside on the upper floor of a restaurant overlooking the marina and enjoyed the sun shine while watching the world go by below.

    A lovely day.

There was a busy market happening when we got there fruit and veg and regional specialities which appear to be bee related honey, honey cake, pollen, as well as pomegranates. Lots of people shopping chatting or having coffee. We wandered around for a bit and then did some shopping ourselves and had some lunchRead more

    Faro, Portugal

    January 10, 2017 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Early start today and headed for the airport by 11. Flight was delayed by 45 minutes and when we finally boarded the pilot said that they had had 120 km headwinds coming in. Ugh I wasn't thrilled to hear that. But...the flight was super smooth, guess we had the tailwind, and we were only 10 minutes late. Stepped off the plane to 17 degrees with warm winds. For those of you who are in the throes of the coldest winter, sorry! Caught my bus and paid 2 euros for the trip from the airport to the hostel . Was at the hostel in 15 minutes. I am one 100 metres from the marina. It is so beautiful. Found an Italian restaurant and had my first pizza in months with a glass of red wine and sat outside. The restauranteur though I was crazy sitting on the patio and said it was too cold. Not from where I had just come from. I had three different guys whistle and say hello while I had dinner. I am going to rent a bike and a kayak because it is supposed to be warm for the next while. I can even do my laundry and hang it outside on the upper deck to dry. Can't wait to tour around tomorrow . I have traveled 2100 km so far on my travels and that's almost all the way across Canada.Read more

    Faro around town

    January 11, 2017 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Wow, spectacular! Reminds me a little of Piran but on a grandeur scale. Super clean and lots of authentic culture. Walked around in the beautiful 20 degrees sunshine just in my t-shirt. When I got back from my walk I lay on the rooftop soaking up the rays for a bit. Bought a bottle of 2013 Duoro Valley red wine for 2.49 eu and had to got a restaurant next door to open it up for me because someone walked off with the corkscrew at the hostel. I sat up on the rooftop and drank this fabulous red wine. My third bottle of wine since New Year's Eve. Tomorrow I am heading up on the west coast by train to Lagos and will spend three days there, I can catch a bus to Seville Spain from there and it only takes two hours to get there. Could be a day trip. I will see what happens when I get to Lagos. So far I really like Portugal it has a very easy going feeling to it and is very friendly and safe.Read more

    Ilha da Culatra near Faro

    October 6, 2017 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

After 2 relaxing nights in the marina we are anchoring again, the currents here are far less than at Alvor so shouldn't be any dragging. We are in a nature reserve but there are still lots of other boats anchored and moving around the lagoons. Tomorrow we plan to take dinghy to Olhoa. We have just met Canadians who we kept bumping into in Spanish Rias, they have been in the Lagoon for a week and are loving it.Read more

    October 25, 2017 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Die letschti Wuchä heimr ar Algarvä verbracht. Vo Sagres, simr über Lagos u Alvor uf Faro.
Z' Sagres, simr zum südwestlechstä Punkt vo Europa, zum Cabo de São Vicente. Ungerwägs simr no inä Töpferladä mit wunderschönä Sachä.
A däm Kap aacho, simr zum Lüchtturm fürä u hei z' Meer u d' Klippä bestuunt. Sehr imposant!
    Dert hets vo Surfer gwimmlet!
Ah däm schönä Strand simr paar Stung verwilet, hei mit dä Wäuä tanzet, si vo dr Fluet überrascht wordä (nassi Tüechli si z' Resultat), hei d' Surfer i ihrem Elemänt beobachtet u si vor Sunnä gwermt wordä. Aues i auem heimr "die Seele baumeln lassen" u heis eifach gnossä!
Z' Stedtli isch ganz hübsch, mit viunä Kafis u Restaurants u gränzt ar eintä Sitä as Meer u ufdr angerä Sitä wirds vo urautä Stadtmuurä begränzt.
Itz simr no anä Strand ir Nööchi vo Ferragudo, hei badet u dr Sunneungergang gnossä u si när ufnä Camping. Leider isch dä privat gsi – dasses ds git, heimr nid grächnet. So simr haut no witr u hei schlussändlech z' Alvor ä sehr Tollä gfungä.
Vom Strand us chamä die Höhli mitemnä Schwumm vo 100m erreichä. Sehr iidrücklech die Steimassä! Widr zrügg am Strand simr no chle verwiilet u när zrügg ufä Camping.
Nachdr 2. Nacht uf däm Camping simr inä witerä Tag gstartet. Hüt het dr Dave mit üsem Camping-Nachbar ä Töfftour chönnä machä u d' Dana u d' Steffi si zämä Ferragudo gah erkundä u när no a Strand.
Gstartet het dr Tag miteme Plattä im eintä Töff. Dr Nachbar isch mit ihm inä Wärchstatt u speter mitem ganzä Töff widr zruggcho. So heisisech zwäggmacht u si umä Mittag um los. Ungerdessä si d' Dana u d' Steffi scho los. Ferragudo isch äs bezoubernds Stedtli mit wunderschönä, vo Bougainvillea-Pflanzä bewachsenä, Hüser u härzigstä Gässli. Nachemnä Ufenthaut am Strand simr widr ufä Camping, wüu mir mitem Dave hei abgmacht. Da die zwe Herrä nachemnä actionriichä u schweisstribendä Tag gägä Aabä techneschi Schwirigkeitä hei gha, isch du d' Träffzyt verschobä wordä u frs augemeinä Wouh, heimr entschidä, nomau ä Nacht z' blibä. Schlussändlech simr wouhbehautä aui 3 widr vreint gsi u hei bimnä feinä Znacht änang vo üsnä Erläbnis a däm Tag brichtet.
Hüt isch dr letscht Tag Algarvä gsi u somit o dr letscht Tag Portugal uf üserä Reis.
Mir hei uscheckt u si uf Faro gfahrä.
Nachem Zmittag simr witr u hei im "Chelsea", ä Gelateria, üs no Glace gönnt. Zwüschä verschidenä u spezieuä Sortä hetmä chönnä wählä u scho bim Uswählä isch eim z' Wasser im Muu zämägloffä! Scho bim erstä Schläck isch klar gsi: ds isch ä Goumäschmous par excellence!
So simr zum Alj u när bis uf Spanie gfahrä u dert z' Isla Cristina ufnä Camping.
Portugal isch absolut äs Campingland u mir heis sehr gnossä. Äs isch mega empfählenswärt!

    Faro

    July 20, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

    Faro

    October 11, 2016 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Read more
