      Sintra

      We finally made it to Sintra today after a few days of thinking about it. I knew Sintra was going to be beautiful, and it still blew my expectations out of the water. To get there we had to take a bus to a train station then buy a pass for the train. The pass worked great at the first station, and then we got to Sintra. we tried scanning our pass to get through the gates and it denied both of us. Even a local couldn't figure it out. He then tried to run behind someone who scanned their card, but the gates slammed in his face and completely bodied him. I laughed so hard in his face, true comedy. We couldn't figure it out either, so we just jumped over a wall to get out lol. We had to hop on another bus, which took us up to Quinta Da Regaleria, where a mansion is built on the side of a mountain on 4 hectares of space. There's so much to see there's no way we didn't miss something even though we spent 5 hours there. We explored caves and tunnels as well as just walking through the garden. Pearse and I made a few "skits" we think are funny. It's so hard to only pick 2 videos for the posts, though. We're off to Porto tomorrow now, so I'd say it was the perfect way to spend the last day in Lisbon.Читать далее

      We're back at it! After returning back to the USA for the holidays and to wait out the winter, we've returned to Europe. We're starting off this leg back where we left off, in the Iberian Peninsula. We flew into Lisbon and traveled to our first stop in Sintra, about 40 minutes west. This time we also have Emily's father John with us for a few weeks.

      Sintra is said by many both past and present to be the most beautiful place in Portugal. It's very easy to see why. Romantic elegance of the old town cobbled streets that meet and disappear into the natural beauty of the forrests,, national parks, and mountains. Sintra is a magical place that boasts grand palaces and castles within walking distance. We were fortunate enough to visit Quinta de Regaleira, Castelo dos Muros, and the palace of Monserrate. They were all outstanding with the later being perhaps our favorite due to its elaborate gardens with plants from across the globe. Just 30km from Lisbon Sintra swept us back in time and had such a storybook feel it was hard not to adore this town. Just beware of the hills and bring good walking shoes!

      While Sintra has evidence of early human settlement from the Paleolithic era and has been occupied by the Romans, it's the Moorish occupation that feels most prominent. As already stated, we visited Castelo dos Muros which was built between the 8th and 9th centuries. While a fortress, it's primary function was that of a lookout point for the surrounding area and the bay leading to Lisbon. The Moors remained in this area until driven out by the first king of Portugal, Alfonzo V, drove them out in 1147.

      Quinta da Regaleira was a private residence. The construction as it is seen today began in 1904. It is rumored to have connections to the Knights Templar and their initiation well.      Читать далее

      Au pays des Palais à Sintra

      Nous n'étions pas vraiment censés rester une nuit de plus ici à Sintra. Mais nous avons tellement adoré et voulions tellement voir d'autres palais... Mais ce n'est clairement pas pour la facilité de conduite que tu veux rester ici !!! Lolll

      Pour commencer, nous avons visité Monserrat, un palais d'un style plutôt arabe avec plusieurs jardins et d'une luxuriante végétation. C'est vraiment beau. Il y a un couloir en plein centre du palais orné de plusieurs arches. Il y a du travail là-dedans! Pour arriver là, c'était assez simple en appelant un Uber à 5 euros pour 15 minutes. Vraiment pas très cher. Mais au moment de repartir pour aller dîner, oh surprise, plus de chauffeur disponible! Il arrive un Jeep qui dépose quelques touristes. Notre lueur d'espoir est là. Nico va lui demander s'il peut nous déposer. Il acquiesce, ça lui fait un grand plaisir. Il est en attente des touristes qu'il vient de déposer.

      C'est une vraie jungle dans ce coin-là. Et là sérieusement, on se dit: mais une chance que nous ne sommes pas venus en campervan. La voie simple est dans les deux sens. Elle est extrêmement sinueuse et étroite. On fait plusieurs face-à-face avec d'autres voitures... On ne sait pas comment ils font parce que sa voiture passe à 2 cm du bord de la roche à droite et 5 cm à gauche de l'autre véhicule qu'il croise. On a oublié de faire un vidéo, mais tabourette, c'est intense! Il nous dépose donc à notre hôtel château! Alelouya, on n’aurait pas fait la route à pied non plus dans de telles conditions et en pente montante non plus!!

      L'hôtel est vraiment majestueux! On en paie aussi le prix pour un dîner !! Car c'est quasiment d'être dans un château. On voit aussi qu'il y a eu plusieurs vedettes qui y sont passées, dont Bono, Roger Moore, Edith Piaf, Richard Nixon et j'en passe.

      Par la suite, nous avons visité le palais de Regaleira. Wow! Il y a des grottes sublimes. Le propriétaire de l'époque avait voulu creuser des canalisations pour rendre l'eau à une fontaine. On se fait un réel plaisir de passer au travers et faire la découverte.

      Il est déjà 16h00, mais... pourquoi pas faire le château des Maures. Volet informatif:

      "Les ruines du Castelo dos Mouros dominent les hauteurs de Sintra. Elles sont celles d’un ancien château qui, pendant l’époque des Maures (du VIIIe eu XIIe siècle), défendait toute la région.

      Comme le château a été construit sur un affleurement rocheux, il offrait aux Maures une position privilégiée et des vues stratégiques sur le littoral ainsi que sur les terres des environs. En 1147, les croisés chrétiens ont pris le château d’assaut et ont fini par l’abandonner pour le laisser à l’état de ruines, complètement recouvert par les denses forêts qui poussent dans les collines de la Serra de Sintra.

      Le cadre naturel et serein des ruines du château a séduit le roi Ferdinand II (1816 – 1885) et l’a conduit à partiellement restaurer ses remparts et à le transformer en la pièce maîtresse du domaine de son incroyable palais de Pena."

      C'est donc avec ce dernier palais que nous terminons notre journée. Du haut des remparts, oufff, le vent y est assez présent ! On doit faire extrêmement attention. Sam tient ma main tout le long. Pas le choix! Il n'y a pas de gardes vraiment! Mais c'est impressionnant. Nous avons une vue sublime sur Sintra et ses environs.

      After touring the Pena Palace we went into the town of Sintra for lunch. Sintra was full of narrow streets winding up steep hills full of small restaurants and shops. It was quite beautiful but crazy busy with people. For lunch we decided the best course of action, to find a quiet place to eat, was to climb to the top of the steepest street. It was a perfect plan. We found a nice refreshing place, with great service, for lunch .

      After lunch we had a nice stroll through town while dodging all the tourists. I can’t imagine what the busy summer season must be like.      Читать далее

      How many palaces is too many?

      Sintra is a beautiful and hilly town with at least 10 palaces in its vicinity. Way too many for me to visit this trip but I got to see one today and will visit one or two tomorrow.

      The streets of Sintra are narrow and wind their way through the hills. So walking from my bed and breakfast to the palace and shops, i walked these twisted roads, surrounded by shops and restaurants that are built into the hillside and staggered on top of each other.

      The National Palace of Sintra was first built in the 1100s and had wings, courtyards and floors added to it by almost every monarchy after. Most of what is on display today is from King Luis I and Queen Maria Pia, the last king and queen of portugal.

      Again, the familiar portuguese tiles, Azulejos, adorn almost every room. The azulejos here are notable because they are more in the Islamic style (raised and textured) than in other historic sites.

      Most of the ceilings were decorated with birds, a theme that was never properly addressed by the audio tour but maybe wasn’t as weird back then? They also had old dowry chests laying around everywhere - again, totally unexplained.

      My favorite room (aside from the gift shop) was Heraldic hall. The domed ceiling was at least 60 feet tall and every inch of that room was covered in azulejos or gold. It was over the top but i found myself feeling very grateful to the artists and craftsmen who devoted their lives to building it.

      The courtyard just outside the palace had an orchestra performing. It was lively and fun and there were children dancing. I also saw where Lord Bryon stayed when he visited (now full of cafes, stores, and apartments) which partially inspired him in Childe Harold to reference Sintra as ‘Glorious Eden.’ I have to agree.

      The courtyard is called “Terreriro da Rainha d Amelia”, which roughly translates to the Yard of Queen Amelia. My niece’s middle name is Raine and my daughter is Amelia so it was a serendipitous moment for me.

      As the sun began to wane, we arrived at the enchanting Moon Hill Hostel, our home for the night. After settling in, we ventured out to explore the picturesque Vila de Sintra, renowned for its romanticist architecture and rich history. The streets were bustling with activity, as vendors sold their wares and musicians serenaded passersby. We marveled at the grandeur of the royal palaces, the Pena National Palace, and the historic estates and gardens, all of which were steeped in centuries-old tales. The Castle of the Moors stood atop a hill, casting a watchful eye over the town below. As we rode in and out of Sintra, we were captivated by its magical charm.       Common travel story. Sintra is a town known for its castles. We visited three today. As expected: Unique architecture, money, powerful people, turrets, gardens, views, fancy beds. All interesting and (maybe) memorable. 🏰 BUT the highlight of our day had nothing to do with the legacy of royalty. The highlight was meeting over dinner and getting to know two Iranian brothers. Hearing their stories, learning about their histories, sharing their dreams. Lots of laughter ending in the exchange of contact information and hugs. That’s why we travel. Priceless.Читать далее

      Buffalo el nuevo Pinguino 🐧

      Vendredi 10 mai, on quitte notre camping à Zambujeira, direction Lisbonne et plus précisément Sintra, où un certain Jan, originaire de Belgique, a accepté de nous accueillir pour 2 nuits dans son appartement 🥰

      En arrivant à la gare routière de Lisbonne, quelle ne fut pas notre surprise lorsque nous apercevons Buffalo (ou Bubu pour les intimes), un des membres des Rails du Climat, qui nous attendait avec impatience pour rejoindre Los Pinguinos !!
      C’est donc avec une grande joie que nous vous annonçons que Los Pinguinos sera désormais constitué de 3 pingouins pour une durée d’environ 1 mois, avant que Buffalo prenne son envol vers d’autres horizons ⛰️

      Une fois Bubu récupéré, on part en direction de chez Jan, qui nous accueille avec des petites cerveza et qui nous présente son fils Joseph (encore un !!), grand fan de Mario : il regarde le film Mario Bros au moins 2x par jour et possède un magnifique costume du plombier moustachu 🥸🔧

      Samedi 11 mai, visite du Palacio da Pena et de son parc 🏰 L’extérieur vaut bien plus le coup que l’intérieur, les couleurs du Palacio sont vraiment très belles et la visite est très sympathique, malgré la météo qui n’est pas vraiment clémente ce jour-là 🌦️
      On enchaîne avec une petite balade au cœur de Sintra, et on en profite pour goûter les spécialités locales (Queijadas, Travesseiros) : on se régale 😋

      Sintra 4/Eindrücke/Fakten

      Bevor es morgen weitergeht
      Noch einige Eindrücke von Sintra
      Straßenmusik wird überall gemacht
      Tuk Tuks, elektrobetriebene Autos im Oldiesstil und Puaggios bestimmen hier neben Hop on und Hop offs das Straßenleben
      Noch ist nicht Saison und trotzdem stehen bei den Sehenswürdigkeiten Schlangen an, denn es kommen stündlich die Tages-Touristen aus Lissabon mit Bussen und Zügen
      Von meinem Fenster aus dem Hostel sehe ich am Abend die Burg und den Nationalpalast beleuchtet
      Beinah hätt ich vergessen, Fotos von der Burg hochzuladen, auf der es sehr windig war, aber die Aussicht war grandios.

      Endlich geht das Abenteuer weiter.

      Heute war der letzte Tag des Abwartens. Auch wenn das eine Paket noch nicht angekommen ist und beim zweiten immer noch kein Code zugeschickt wurde. 

      Bevor wir aber losfuhren, kümmerten wir uns um die letzten Erledigungen im und am Auto. 

      Als Erstes kümmerte sich Tim um die Endreinigung des Dachzeltes. Dadurch, dass wir in einem Wald stehen, kam öfters auch Dreck mit in das Dachzelt. Tim nahm sich dieser Arbeit an und machte das Dachzelt zugleich abfahrbereit. 

      Zeitgleich setzte sich Jasmin an die Tagebucheinträge, welche Aufholbedarf hatten. 

      Nach dem Dachzelt fing Tim bereits mit dem Vorspülen des Geschirrs an. Wegen des immer noch nicht vorhandenen Stroms entwendete er das dazu benötigte Wasser manuell aus dem Frischwassertank. 

      Als Jasmin mit den Einträgen fertig war, fing Tim an, diese gegenzulesen und danach luden wir eines nach dem anderen hoch. 

      Noch bevor wir uns dem Abwasch zuwandten, kam erstmals eine etwas spannendere Aufgabe. Wir planten gemeinsam grob Mai sowie auch bereits den Juni. 

      Die nächsten paar Wochen werden, wie wir es langsam am liebsten haben, wieder hektischer. 

      Wir werden Portugal im Norden hinter uns lassen, Nordspanien einen Besuch abstatten, dann versuchen Andorra kurz aufsuchen und werden dann über Frankreich zu unserem Workaway gelangen.

      Glücklich, wieder eine Etappe geplant zu haben, machte sich Tim an den Abwasch und Jasmin trocknete ab und verräumte direkt das Geschirr. Dann wurde der Gasherd verstaut und das Gas fahrgerecht verschlossen. Tim entsorgte das Abwasser und schraubte alle Kanister wieder ein. Jasmin fegte noch schnell den Boden und staubsaugte den Fahrerbereich. 

      Ein weiteres positives Ereignis traf ein. Wir bekamen zwei Codes für unsere Schliessfächer. Was bedeutet, unsere beiden Pakete sind endlich eingetroffen!

      Zusammen nahmen wir das erneut überlaufene Boxio in die Hand und nahmen unsere Badetaschen. Man weiss nie, wann die nächste kostenlose Dusche oder überhaupt Dusche wieder zur Verfügung steht. 

      Im Park war gerade eine kleine Seniorenparty in vollem Gange und wir beeilten uns nicht zu lange zu Duschen. Gerührt über die herzigen älteren Menschen, wie sie freudig zu portugiesischem Schlager tanzten, zauberte uns ein Lächeln in das Gesicht.

      Beim Klapfi kontrollierte Tim noch den Ölstand und schon ging die Fahrt los zu der Wäscherei. Wir winkten noch dem Parkwächter beim Vorbeifahren, da er uns die letzten Tage so gut ausgehalten hatte und uns keine Probleme machte. 

      Glücklich kamen wir bei der Wäscherei an und Tim parkte am Strassenrand mit der Warnblinkermethode. Sicherheitshalber blieb Jasmin im Auto sitzen. Halb strahlend, halb weinend gesellte sich Tim mit den beiden Paketen zu Jasmin. Das einzige "Problem", es war nur ein Paket und ein Brief. Das langersehnte Scharnier ist eingetroffen. Leider schaffte es die Drohne bis jetzt immer noch nicht, vom Zoll genehmigt zu werden. Aber der vor zwei Wochen von Jasmins Eltern gesendete Brief hat das Postfach erreicht. Lachend, um die Situation zu verarbeiten, lasen wir den von Herzen geschriebenen Brief. Schade um die Drohe, aber schön für eine weitere, bleibende Erinnerung. 

      Um einen Gedanken fassen zu können, suchten wir erstmals den nächsten "Lidl" auf. Im Laden holten wir uns für 5.14 Euro zwei Fertigsalate mit zwei Vollkornbrötchen und verdrückten die auf dem Parkplatz. Als Zweites besprachen wir die Situation. Im besten Fall schicken sie das Paket zurück und die Drohne wird wieder Jasmins Eltern erreichen. Im schlechteren Fall wird das Paket nie auftauchen, dafür würde aber das verlorene Paket von der abgeschlossenen Versicherung gedeckt werden. Was zumindest eine finanzielle Entlastung bedeutet. 

      Die Option abwarten lag leider nicht mehr drin, wegen des Zeitdrucks in den Norden. Klapfi ist, wie bereits bekannt, eher gemütlich unterwegs.

      Um den Wocheneinkauf hinter uns zu bringen, kauften wir für 51.56 € bis und mit nächstem Freitag ein. Ausnahme dabei erneut das Trinkwasser sowie frisches Obst für die letzten Tage. Tim kaufte sich noch für 1.69 Euro und Jasmin für 1.99 Euro Snacks, welche mit unserem Taschengeld bezahlt wurden.

      Die Zeit verging wie im Flug und es wurde langsam Abend. Lange werden wir heute nicht mehr fahren können. Anschauen sowieso nichts mehr. Um morgen richtig durchstarten zu können, suchten wir in der Nähe vom "Cabo da Roca" einen Stellplatz. 

      Der Weg führte uns durch Sintra und wir machten einen kleinen Abstecher im Primark in einem riesigen Einkaufszentrum. Leider waren die Tops, wie das mit der Palme, hier bereits ausverkauft. Dafür konnte Jasmin mit ihrem Taschengeld noch für 4 Euro eine gemütliche Hotpants kaufen.

      Zum Abendessen lud uns Tim mit seinem Taschengeld zu einem Asiaten in der Mall ein. Für insgesamt 15.80 Euro konnten wir je zwei Sushiarten, zwei frittierte Köstlichkeiten und einen Hauptgang wählen. Es gab für Tim Sushi mit Gurke/Lachs und Avocado/Lachs, Frühlingsrollen, frittierte Shrimps und gebratene Nudeln mit Gemüse. Für Jasmin Ausnahme einmal Sushi mit Thunfisch und einmal Sushi mit Lachs und Surimi. 

      Als letztes besuchten wir noch den Decathlon, um die Preise für einen grösseren Trekkingrucksack anzuschauen, preislich 50 Euro weniger als in der Schweiz. Jetzt fehlt nur noch der Platz im Klapfi, weshalb wir das Ganze noch zu Ende überlegen wollten. Warum wir den Rucksack brauchen, wird man bald im Tagebuch erfahren. 

      Im MediaMarkt suchten wir noch Airpods Pro Gummis, die man hier leider nur online auf Amazon zum Beispiel findet.

      Mit den neu erlangten Informationen brachen wir zu unserem Stellplatz auf.

      Direkt neben einem Naturpark fanden wir den Stellplatz einsam vor. Schnell klappten wir das Dachzelt auf und widmeten uns den letzten 30 Minuten von GNTM. Dazu gab es die von Jasmin spendierten Cronuts. 

      Da passierte etwas sehr Ungewöhnliches für unsere Augen. Um uns herum fing es plötzlich an vereinzelt zu schimmern und zu leuchten. Dutzende von Glühwürmchen erleuchteten den fast schwarzen Abendhimmel. Es sah bezaubernd aus. 

      Glücklich ging es an die Abendroutine und mit dem Schein der Glühwürmchen fanden wir einen angenehmen Schlaf.
