      Angeiras to Vila do Conde

      After coffee, I was back to the boardwalk. Most of the trail today was on this boardwalk, and the rest on cobblestone. Plus a short (thankfully) area where the sand had drifted over the trail. That was tough.

      I chatted with some people from Malaysia, Columbia, Germany, and New Zealand. And the people in my room are from Germany and Italy. The Camino is very international.

      Once I got to Vila do Conde, I had to find a bridge to cross the large river. Once that was done, I had a fabulous lunch. Salada do Frango, or chicken salad. Very nice.      Les mer

      Don't worry, it's only 22.5km!

      It's funny how 22.5km can turn into 32km!!! 😲🙄🤣
      We began by losing our way back to the airport... kilometres later we arrived there ready for coke, coffee and a second breakfast of pastel de nata.
      A metro journey into Porto plus a walk to the cathedral meant we didn't start walking until 1030. The day was spent making sure the ocean was to our left (great advice from our absent guide Julie🤗) although it was quite some time before we left the Douro and joined the north Atlantic.
      Lunch was spent just short of Matosinhos - I ordered a beef sandwich that came out as beef, egg and chips! Somehow. I managed to eat it 😋 🤣.
      22.5km turned into just a few more and then even more... and we finally found our fab accommodation in Angeiras. We had a very nice Pilgrim's menu for €10 and now we're ready for bed and just 22.5km tomorrow. Honest!!!🤣      Les mer

      Day 1 - Porto to La Bruge

      Beautiful day! Beautiful weather! The sun was out, but the wind, a steady breeze into your face, kept it comfortable if not cool. A little bit of a late start, but we needed the sleep.

      As mentioned, we worked our way back to the Cathedral and then wound our way to the coast going down, down, down, hundreds of steps and narrow streets.

       It was really very interesting seeing the city wake-up as we walked north. About two hours in we came across a nice cafe overlooking the Rio Douro and had coffee and breakfast. We missed our breakfast at the hotel because we left too early. I didn’t feel so much like a tourist as I did an observer. It’s easier to do when your only goal is to walk all day. I see a lot more.

      As we left the city we started walking on an incredible boardwalk that goes along the coast for miles and miles. It really made for a great walk on wood all day long. Better than sand or rocks. The Portugal coast is beautiful in many areas and the people take advantage of it by how they have structured their life around it.

      We stopped for a late lunch - beer and a salmon wrap at a restaurant on the beach. We have begun to meet our fellow Pilgrims and trade the traditional hello of “Bom Camino” each time we see them.

      The day finished at La Bruge at my first albergue. We are in an old school house with a room of about a dozen bunk beds. Dinner was on the coast, of course.

      Finished the day with over 41,000 steps and 15.9 miles.

      Tomorrow an early start for sure!

      Camino Day 1

      Today we left Porto to start the Camino. We walked along the seaside boardwalk all the way from Matosinhos. Beautiful beach and crashing waves. We stopped on Paraiso at Pe No Mar for lunch and had a lovely meal with great service. Now we are in Labruge (population 3000) before we head on for our hotel tonight in Vila Cha (even smaller population), just up the road.Les mer

      Nach einer mäßigen Nacht ging es noch vor acht Uhr los. Einmal durch die Innenstadt, zurück an den Fluss Douro und dann immer am Wasser entlang.
      Eigentlich wollten wir mit der historischen Bahn die Strecke etwas abkürzen aber dir fuhr erst um 9:00. Also sind wir die 4 km dann doch zusätzlich gelaufen. Irgendwann am Meer angekommen ging es eine lange Strecke auf Holzstegen am Wasser entlang.

      Labruge and our first alburgue!

      We walked SO much farther than we had anticipated! 17 miles according to my pedometer! Definitely tired, but feeling accomplished! The coast was gorgeous! After Matasinhos it was miles and miles of boardwalk and beach! The sea wind in our face kept us cool on this hot day! So far, very greatful for the items I’ve packed with me! Impressed with the Lush shampoo bar! Going to use my Sea to Summit sleep sack tonight! 👏👏👏Les mer

      It really was what should have been yesterday! 22.5km (ish)...
      We left Angeiras at about 0800 after a pretty good night's sleep. It was nice to have a chalet to ourselves so we could spread out without upsetting anyone else or invading their space. We very quickly found the seaside, turned right, kept the Atlantic on our left, and headed off. It was quite chilly and there was a gentle breeze (more of that later🙄😅) but it was very pleasant walking along the boardwalk towards today's stop, Aguçadoura.
      Before too long, though, the wind started to pick up and was slowing us down. After a stop for breakfast at Vila Chi (where Sid and Marcel made an appearance) we headed off again. The wind was dreadful and we were heading straight into it! According to the BBC weather app we were enjoying a 'moderate breeze' of 18 knots (about 33km/hr) but a check on the Portuguese weather app put that into touch - we were fighting winds of 50km/hr, hardly a 'moderate breeze'🤪.
      We ventured on though (no choice, we've booked all but one of our accommodation) and stopped for a small beer at Vila do Conde, which is, funnily enough, where Julie, Anne and I got lost last time we were here 🙄🤭. Onwards and upwards (well, flatwards) for lunch at Povoa de Varzim (a long wait for a large wrap) then on again to our accommodation at Aguçadoura. This is a 'guest house' - it's an albergue with towels - and as we're pretty tired we decided to eat in. A good decision😋 Funny how you can walk and talk and eat and talk and still find lots to talk about 🥰🥰🥰. Looking forward to a good night's sleep and a gentle walk of just 22.2kms tomorrow in winds of only 40km/hr - sheer luxury 😆😅🤣      Les mer

      I. PORTO - VILA CHÃ

      25. april, Portugal ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

      Was ein Tag. Allein gestartet und mit Raquel in Vila Chã angekommen. Ganze 30 km am ersten Tag geschafft, nicht ganz so weit wie geplant, aber mehr als genug.

      Als ich an einem Restaurant in Montesinho vorbei kam lief gerade das Lied aus Rocky… hab ich sowas von gefühlt 😅

      Ein paar Kilometer weiter habe ich Raquel aus England, naja eigentlich aus Spanien, kennengelernt (und das nur weil wir den gleichen Rucksack haben 😅) und von da ging es dann gemeinsam weiter. In Spanien hat sie Kriminologie und soziale Arbeit studiert aber keinen Job gefunden, nun lebt sie seit einem Jahr in England und arbeitet in einem Gefängnis - spannend!
      Ich war noch nie in England und sie noch nie in Deutschland… Kontaktdaten sind ausgetauscht 😌👍🏼

      Ich muss sagen, dass mir das Gehen eigentlich nichts ausgemacht hat, wenn ich doch nur keine kleinen Zehen hätte die doch irgendwann angefangen haben zu drücken 😬 also ging es heute „nur“ bis nach Vila Chã, wo mir die liebe Andrea schon ihre Unterkunft vom Vortag empfohlen hatte! Ich hatte tatsächlich etwas Sorge kein Bett mehr zubekommen, aber da ich rechtzeitig da war, war das gar kein Problem 🙏🏼
      10€ für ein Bett im gemischten Saal mit Handtüchern, Bettwäsche, sauberen Duschkabinen und Frühstück morgen… happy as fuck!

      Und dann? Ab an den Strand! Wo ich zufällig Raquel wiedergetroffen habe 😅 Nach einem Hundeüberfall haben wir das passende Herrchen namens Jörg, Deutscher - na klar - kennengelernt. Nachdem ihm durch Corona auf Fuerteventura die Decke auf den Kopf gefallen ist, reist er mit seinen Hunden Ramses, Merlin und Joker durch die Gegend. Den drei riesen Kuschelmonstern hat’s bei uns auf jeden Fall gefallen.

      Und dann ab ins Meer. Ich glaub hier war es kälter als gestern aber schöööön! Irgendwann will ich am Meer wohnen!

      In der Albergue São Mamede habe ich noch Gerhart und Anette kennengelernt. Mit ihr gabs abends noch ne Runde Waden ausrollen und dehnen 👌🏼

      Da ich den ganzen Tag mit Raquel unterwegs war und englisch sprechen musste, was ich sonst nie mache 🥴 war mir heute nicht mehr danach mit den anderen zusammen zu sitzen und weiter englisch zu reden… vielleicht morgen :)

      Und weil ich’s heute morgen im ersten Café gehört habe und es so gut zum heutigen Tag passt!

      Reisebericht-Montag 1

      Guuuuuuuten morgen.

      Mit dem Lied im Kopf aufgewacht, gegrübelt, geheult,aufgestanden, an den Song wieder gedacht, bei Youtube runtergeladen und seit dem höre ich ihn. Bis jetzt zur ersten Pause, Frühstück, Kaffequelle umgestylt, nordic walking set eingepackt denn ich hab es Antonio ja gesagt, welches Instrument ich lernen möchte. Zum Glück ja nicht Klavier. Muhahaha.

      Habe den Song zur Kraftzehrung an zwei liebe Menschen geschickt, denn da siehts gesundheitlich nicht wirklich gut aus 😢. Ich hoffe es kommt bei Ihnen so an, kann angedachtes freisetzen und danke camino das du mir dadurch ein Stückchen mich wieder zu sein, auch geben im Leben.

      Nächste Etappe ist wieder Musik. Wie gut dass ich noch in Portugal bin, denn in Spanien könnte man mich mit ner lagokaracha (küchenschabe) verwechseln. Klack, Klack
