    Lipica (Lipizzano)

    September 13, 2019 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    16.6 km, 340 ascent
Walking through cool forest areas was a pleasant surprise for us today as we were expecting this high Karst area of limestone to be quite exposed and barren - the revegetated areas, made for great walking. The Lipica Horse Stud was quite a bizarre mix of magnificent gardens/fields and old run down hotel and casino. We attended a live equestrian show and tour but the real highlight was seeing over 100 Lipizzaner mares returning from the fields to their night stables - a truly beautiful sight.Read more

    Im Karst

    September 15, 2019 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

    Lisjak Vina

    June 7, 2019 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

We traveled today through the beautiful Soca Valley to the town of Kobarid. The small museum there explains the importance of the Soca Pass, and the terrible fighting during World War I through the stories of the soldiers. It is a moving and very well done museum, highlighted by the excellent guide who led us through.
With thoughts of the terrible price of war in our minds,we continued on toward the sea. As we followed the river through the Soca valley toward the Istrian peninsula, the landscape changed dramatically from the alpine peaks toward the green hillsides and finally the more Mediterranean coastline. Our lunch stop was at the beautiful Lisjak vineyards, where we sampled the young wines, as well as the mature whites and red Teran wine. This vineyard has been in the family for eight generations.

    Last country, Slovenia

    August 13, 2019 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    Big day today
As we drove Genti told us Slovenia was the first country to gain independence from Yugoslavia, setting the example for other countries. It has been part of the EU since 2004 and is one of the most developed countries in Europe. It feels much more "Western" and richer than some of the other countries.

We visited a Prancing horse stud, "Lipizzaner" horses. They had a riding school and also a museum. Beautiful horses and lovely old stables and barns. These horses are born black and turn white

After lunch we go so the incredible Postojina Caves. You ride into the cave system for 2 km on a wee train, then a walking tour of another 2.5 km through the most amazing caverns and formations. The cave is 2 million years old and 25 km long.

Lovely Ljubljana is our home tonight
