      Abschied von Knysna 🐘

      March 4 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      The “mighty” Robberg

      November 18, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We started our day with a breakfast under blue sky and already quite hot sun. People went swimming in the lagoon…we were tempted too but had planned to visit the Robberg Nature Reserve next to Plettenberg Bay. The place was already very busy as it was Saturday as well and we could hardly park our van. We started and were first surrounded by plenty of people, also groups! But after the The Gap (smallest loop) and the Whitsand second turnoff, where our way headed towards “The Point” only few (brave) people continued. Along the entire Nort Side of the Peninsula we past above houndreds of seals. Their noise and smell was very present. Most of them were swimming in the crystal green sea and others were just hanging around on the shore. That’s where the name Robberg comes from.
At the most eastern point (at the end) we were lucky to see two whales passing by. They were showing their fins and made us happy!
The tricky part of the path started now. Down and up, down and up and down again. Amazing nature but quite exhausting and hot. We climbed rocks and stairs and sandy pathes until we finally reached the beach. Shoes off and right into the sea…it was great to cool down. The air was hot, the water cool. The last part back to the car park was again up and down and we were quite exhausted back at our van! But it was worth it.
We continued our journey to a beautiful place called Buffalo Bay. A remote place with surf beaches and holidays homes. The campsite had the prime spot at the end of the Peninsula - we were surrounded by the ocean. We enjoyed the view and spent some time around our campfire while listening to the waves!

      Gerrickes Point und Buffels Bay

      January 25, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Read more

      Strollin in Paradise

      November 29, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Knysna has proven to be absolutely wonderful.

Wednesday was all about relaxing and enjoying perfect weather. We woke slowly aboard Cielo. I just love sleeping on the water! Then met up with a friend of Bruce's, for breakfast at a cute n quirky harborside restaurant before heading off on a 10km/6mile beach stroll punctuated by a refreshing beverage and fries at Buffalo Bay, where I would really like to have a beach house. It feels like a combination of various beach areas that I love.

Then again, the big "use this box for shark attack victims" is a wee bit discomforting. 🦈

Along the way I was pretty sure I'd lost my wallet, which is always a rough feeling. Happily I wasted no time fretting... And decided to fret only after checking aboard the boat. Perfect! Wallet found, fret avoided.

We finished the day watching dingy races and swapping tales with folks at the yacht club while pale golden springtime sunshine reflected off of the bay (which they call a lagoon for reasons I do not understand).

      Day 39 - Buffalo Bay

      April 23, 2022 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

This Saturday morning the sun was only emerging at 07:00.... just got to love the Southern Cape🥰 When Annatjie Meyer WhatsApp'ed photies of Shelley earlier this morning and we chatted, it was already daylight in Nelspruit here in 'Buffelsbaai' still darkish. So we only got to run at 08:00

Not Hardeda's cracking up, but Seagulls yip, Seagulls nattering over some rotton 'Red Bait' washed onto the rocks last night, woke us up this morning. At best that stuff is gross, but when it's past its 'Sell by Date' stinks to High Heaven 😏

Rushed a quick 6km there and back on the Buffalo Bay main road, a swim in the rocky bay and a good hot shower, before 'breaky' and off to Knysna for the next weeks rations. Beer and wine do not fit into this category! Firstly it is not a ration and secondly it has not run out (yet)!!!

The slower part of the day we spent loitering until Mariette and Ghislain arrived at 2pm.

We all had such a good time, recalling, laughing, drinking, eating and elaborating on all our (and their), past happenings and future dreams and plans! Got to love those 'Earth People'👊🏻💐who also send their best wishes and love to everyone, who may or may not know them. And so we 'kuiered' until late and in light rain they left for their home in George.

Sporadic showers throughout the night brought about a grey but stunning sunrise this morning, sitting on our very own seafront bay verandah!

      Day 38 - Buffalo Bay

      April 22, 2022 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Our first stop out of Addo after we broke camp this morning, was to fuel up at the 'Total Garage' in the Main Camp, fueling hours 07:00 until 18:00. 07:00 we arrived there ahead of a longish trip to the 'Garden Route' .... no body at the station!? A security guard (armed to the back-teeth, shotgun and all) told us, everyone was on strike... no fuel. Fortunately we were not desperate so we moved on. Next stop Addo (village), and there, 'load shedding'😖and so onto Port Elizabeth. Eventually fuelled up and headed on to Jeffrey's Bay=> Humansdorp => Plettenberg Bay=> Knysna and eventually Buffalo Bay.

Since arriving in the Western Cape, 'White Lines' are painted white, broken telephone poles destroying landscapes and wires hanging to the ground are non-existant, and first world 'Windfarms' are visible everywhere! For the first time since we left Nelspruit over 5 weeks ago we encountered the police contingents on the ground and directing traffic in the bustling town/city of Knysna, Traffic Cops were standing in for powerless traffic lights!

The campsite in Buffalo Bay, situated right on the far point out to sea is stunning. Our site itself is less than 20m from the High Water mark and the whole campsite again empty, with no more than 10 caravans. Love it, Love it, Love it! Facilities are great and even better, simply just no people! The weather since returning to the coast, in PE gale-force wind and heavily overcast, with rain expected in Buffalo Bay by 15:00. We sneaked in just ahead of the scheduled forecast, pitched camp and the rain, did not materialise!👍👊🏻 Whatever, it is just peaceful being back at the sea again!

Plans for our trip across the Baviaanskloof have now also been stalled, until Monday.

Our longtime mates, Bollie and Ghislain who we have not seen for nearly 10 years, and we were planning to see on Sunday for her Birthday, are now joining us in Buffalo Bay to camp the night tomorrow (on Sat). So, we will then spend Sunday (Birthday) with them and reschedule Baviaanskloof until Monday.

      Buffels Bay Whale spotters point

      October 30, 2022 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

An unexpected treat when I spotted some people pointing out to sea. I think it was a humpback and her baby. They were quite active for a while. Great to see but a little far out for good photos.

      Buffels Bay

      March 12 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

For lunch we stopped at Buffels Bay. We could get the best spot on the terrace before the group of german tourists arrived. Thus we were in the prime position overlooking the beach hoping to see a few surfer boys in their natural habitat. As you can see, the beach was empty which nearly made us sad if it wasn't for the lucky mistake of the waiter. Unfortunately, we were brought a large beer i
nstead of a small one which ment free beer for us🙌🏼
We had some fish and chips and a boerewors roll which were delicious. But do you know what? You can taste an even better boerewors from the confort of your home! Check out https://catora.ch/ to get the best berewors in Switzerland?
