      Via de la Plata

      19. Oktober 2022 in Spanien ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

After a short stroll I moseyed in to Astorga, which has been a Christian centre in Spain since the time of the apostles and became a Roman stronghold as well. Astorga is where the Camino Frances joins the Via de la Plata, otherwise known as the Roman Road which is now a popular alternate Camino route. Astorga is also where many Spanish start their Camino.

As soon as I had climbed a few steps into the old town I was greeted with a gorgeous manicured park set at the top of the old city walls. These walls were originally built by the Romans though they have been raised and rebuilt in the Middle Ages and only small parts of the Roman wall remain at the base. The wall was 2.2km long, 4-5m thick and enclosed an area of 26 hectares although not all of it remains today.

I decided on an extra short walk today so I could explore Astorga and also stay out of the rain which bucketed down from lunch time. Luckily I was busy exploring the Baroque Cathedral and the 19th century (virtually modern) Bishops Palace built by the famous Spanish architect Gaudi. Most photos are almost all of the Palace with only a cloister shot from inside the Cathedral and a couple of external shots with the palace and cathedral which are next to each other. After siesta, if there's a break in the rain, I will head out to find some famous Astorga chocolate.

Tonight I'm back in a hostel although it's a bit special as there are no bunk beds and the owner is Brazilian and so is the pilgrim dinner tonight. I've chosen the bed next to the only opening window as I find I'm very partial to fresh air when I'm sleeping in a room with twelve other people.

Back in the mountains yayy 🥰

      24. Oktober 2023 in Spanien

One of the coolest morning skies so far, photos did not do justice! Missed scrambling up rocky inclines even if you have to try not to break your angle with every step, and worth it for the AMAZE views from the albergue at the lil village at the top when the clouds cleared enough to actually see them lolWeiterlesen

      Astorga

      13. August 2022 in Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

No one told me this is a dangerous city. The chocolate stores are no joke! I can't go browsing because I get the urge of sampling everything and that's just not possible 😫
The City isn't too big, and being Saturday afternoon, it was pretty quiet when I walked around. I'm sure it will get buzzing later.Weiterlesen

      Astorga

      19. Oktober 2022 in Spanien ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

We had our second consecutive day off today. We saw everything we wanted too in León, so we slept in, had a late breakfast, then hopped a bus to Astorga.

The bus system in Spain seems to be very nice. Both of our bus trip were on time. Both were nice "Tour Buses", no junky Greyhound buses here! The routes included quick stops in the center of every town along the way. And the city bus stations are centrally located in the cities. Two thumbs up!

Upon hitting Astorga, first priority was buy a couple of nice rain ponchos, as the 10-day forecast looks very wet as we head into the first mountain ridge.

Next was a visit to a small church, then a tour of the Cathedral here. A late afternoon rest break, was followed by a visit to the Guadi Palace & Museum.

      Astorga to Foncebadon

      18. April in Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

I'm rarely still around late enough to know (BRAG) but I think the blasting chants after 7.30 might not just be a Roncesvalles thing? Astorga was certainly keen on it today. In what I'm sure is an innocent mistake, I left without my freezer brick because SOMEONE TOOK IT but it doesn't matter, I'm close enough to my last dose it can be at room temp.

Been a total break-slut today - coffee, orange juice and toast, coke, lunch.
I honestly don't mind though, I think taking my time on the walk is part of adjusting to the pace and routine. Getting in at 2 versus 4 makes no difference. Rolled in at 4.30pm after walking up a hill we continue to climb tomorrow to reach the highest point of the whole Camino. I can't wait to see the sunrise from here in the morning.

Some homework I've done tonight to satisfy questions raised when walking:

      1. Earwax DOES hold DNA but you have to get it within 30 days.

      2. The tallest cow on record is 6'3 and quite frankly I saw one a few weeks ago that could take that, I should write to them.

      Retour à l'âme du chemin

      25. Mai 2023 in Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      Stage 26: Villadangos-Astorga

      11. Oktober 2022 in Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

@#?? km/16-18?? miles (saw varying estimates), maybe it's better not to know, decided to not worry about it and just keep walking till I got there, and I survived. Left at 0745 before dawn, the path was well lit by street lights leaving town. Thankfully there were well placed villages and another funky donativo rest stop to break it up on the northern variant after Hospital de Orbigo, away from the N-120. That's all I'm going to say about today, for now. Laundry and supplies shopping in order as tomorrow is national holiday and stores will be closed. Pictures to follow.Weiterlesen

      Sights, sounds, situations

      14. Oktober 2023 in Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

So, the sights have started to change for real! Today was a beautiful walk as we approached the mountains under skies that cleared over the course of the morning. No roadside walking today - so nice. And the climb was mostly gentle and in the cooler air felt really good.

Sounds. I’ve been thinking about the sounds of the Camino. Almost every morning as I wake up, somewhere nearby a rooster is crowing. I like that.
Sleeping in albergues you are surrounded by the sounds of other people. As 10:00 arrives and lights go off it gets quiet, but always there is breathing, snoring, rustling, shuffling. I find it all oddly comfortable and comforting, all that humanity around me. I think this way of sleeping in groups is very old. It reminds me we are primates, social creatures.
Languages! All the time in cafes and albergues, or along the trail conversations are happening in at least a dozen languages. People find ways to communicate, we laugh a lot, smile, shrug.

Situations! Every day follows a pattern, so if a situation is challenging one day, you know that, for better or worse you will have many opportunities to try it again ahead of you. It pushes for growth and builds confidence, and resilience.

Tomorrow morning we climb to the Cruz de ferro, the Iron Cross, where by tradition you leave a stone representing some burden you hope to be relieved of. Something to look forward to. But now, time to curl up amongst my tribe of the day and get some sleep…

      Day 22 walking!

      31. Mai in Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

We ate our dinner last night in the Hostal and combined tables to eat with the other Peregrinos there, another Brit, a French lady who had cycled from Dijon originally towing her dog in a trailer but bad weather forced her to ask a friend to look after the dog, a French chap and a man from Taiwan who wanted to be completely disassociated with any groups of Koreans!!!
We had some strange conversations and my French has come in very handy!
We set off to another day of glorious blue sky as we headed out on the way, although we could see heavy ominous grey clouds in the distance over the looming mountains!
We followed a road initially into Astorga, sort of market town size place with nice cathedral and castle type place by Gaudi. As we left Astorga, we’re passing into the mountains of Leon which will then lead us into Galicia. The way turned into a dirt track surrounded by mixture of farmland, scrub and trees but nearly always wild flowers at the edge and happy bird song including the enchanting cuckoo! It was a hot day, not as hot as yesterday and we had cool mountain breeze. We climbed gently and passed through quite a few villages and took every opportunity to stop and have a cold drink and rest for a bit. We climbed gently to just over 1,100m to our destination Albergue La Senda at Rabanal del Camino after about 24 Km. Nice enough Albergue but back to bunks! Lovely old village with cobbled streets and old buildings.
I’m getting on ok with the walking sandals and socks, but the track is very dusty and the dust is clearly visible on my blue socks when I take the sandals off!! My toe felt fine walking today, but possibly it was little too far and doesn’t look good tonight. Tomorrow is the climb to the highest point of the Camino and the iron cross but I may share a taxi with an American lady who has bad knee (and can hardly walk) instead of walking up and down. I think going up would be ok for me, but the hardest bit is the steep downward path.

Happy to be back on my feet ;)

      13. August 2023 in Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Yesterday was my last bus day. I arrived in Hospital de Orbigo, a small medieval village on the Camino from Leon. I forgot to post yesterday, because I spent the afternoon relaxing in an albergue with a comfortable outdoor patio where I could read and enjoy the warm breeze. It was nice to have a quiet day to prepare for my next few weeks of walking.

I left Hospital de Orbigo this morning ON FOOT! I was excited to be walking again and enjoyed my renewed commitment to “marvel” (a Burns favorite) while I walked. The morning light was especially beautiful. The walk was mostly flat and not too strenuous.

Some of my favorite things from today -

A pilgrim stand in what seemed like the middle of nowhere had a cornucopia of treats. Enjoying a fresh slice of watermelon in the middle of a hot stretch of walking was delightful (as was seeing the joy, surprise, and gratitude of every pilgrim who stopped in.)

Buying chocolate in Astorga, apparently known for its chocolate.

Finding a restaurant that would serve me dinner at 5pm! It was truly a miracle. Spain seems to close for all food options from 4pm-9pm (no joke). I’ve walked into so many restaurants at 5, 6, or 7 and asked when they serve dinner and they all say 830 or 9. I’ve been eating random street food or bread and cheese from the grocery store for dinner. Tonight I couldn’t find a grocery store that was open, so I went wandering praying with little hope that I’d find a good spot for dinner before going back to my albergue. I stumbled into a cozy restaurant that let me order the “menu del dia” with three courses for 20 euro at 5pm. Truly a miracle. (I’m wondering if they let me order a late lunch, because no one else is eating.)

Looking forward to another good day tomorrow.
