      Day 4 - To Pamplona

      12 september 2022, Spanje ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

      Day 4 - To Pamplona
Just as I arrived in Zubiri via a bridge yesterday, I left town on the same bridge. This bridge is called “Rabies Bridge”. An old tradition has it that if a dog was walked 3 times over the bridge it was believed to be protected from rabies. Legend from the 15th century says that builders dug into the rock to place a pillar and found a woman’s embalmed body. Santa Quiteria, patron saint against rabies. “When she was being transported to Pamplona to be buried, her body miraculously refused to budge from this spot, so her processional assumed it was a sign that she wished to be buried along the pilgrim road” (Camino De Santiago village to village guide, 2022).
Today was a very difficult day! I hiked 20.6 km in 36°C searing heat. There was pockets of shade here and there, but not a lot. My water warmed up quickly in my pack. I had to rest far more often today, especially while walking in the direct sun. I became fatigued very easily. I was nauseous and constantly felt over-exerted, at one point thinking I wasn’t going to be able to make it to my destination of Pamplona. We have had a few people drop already, this early, from heat overexertion. So I was actually a little concerned. But I went very slow and tried my best to keep water in me, although it made me even more nauseous. I also tried to take a few bites of food now and then. And I took advantage of resting in the shade whenever I could find some. I went past a creek and the temptation to jump in was almost overwhelming! Not a lot of pictures today; I had to focus on myself. And by God’s grace, I did it!! Presently I’m in Pamplona. I have decided to take a rest day, tour the city, and regroup for tomorrow’s hike. So I’m here for 2 nights.

    • Pamplona-Where the Bulls Run!

      2 september 2022, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Over and over again, I see the kindness of strangers. A woman I met from Brisbane, Australia was having a very difficult time with the travel and the backpack. A sweet couple from California first offered to divide up some of her backpack, only to discover she couldn’t carry it. So, Craig carried it about
5-7 km for her. It was hot, sunny, and an overall exhausting hike.
We arrived in Pamplona—-I showered, repacked and went to find food.
The toughest is that bars, restaurants close at 2pm for siesta and don’t serve food until 8pm, all I want to do is eat and go to bed.
Another big day ahead tomorrow. I slept in this cubicle. I actually liked that it helped with not hearing the snorers and for privacy.
      Puenta la Reina tomorrow.

      Pamplona

      2 april, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      First night in an albergue

      23 juli 2022, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

There were 14 beds in my room - 7 sets of bunks.
The pic shows the view from my bed in the morning: there's a draw curtain that helps with privacy and the lights that go on and off at any hour as each other guest goes about their business. My backpack added to that. I hung it with an S hook, which I brought based on a tip I read on the Camino forum I've been following.

I didn't sleep the whole night though but got up at 7 feeling rested enough. Luckily snoring in the room hasn't been too bad. I brought ear plugs but couldn't find them last night. I have to get better organised.

I got the sleeping bag and liner out, but only needed the liner. It was warm in the room, despite the cool outside.

The albergue is very clean, the showers and toilets are plentiful and in perfect condition. I will soon make use of the kitchen for the self-service breakfast, and then will have to pack everything up again, hoping to be able to easily find what I need, when I need it.

      Day 5

      28 augustus 2022, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

A really lovely walk again today with nothing too challenging.. I was tempted to try and keep up with the First Lady in a trail running race that was happening on a part of the route as I was sure I could have done😂.. there didn’t seem to be as many people on route today, whether some had started particularly early due to the forecasted temperatures if 36 degrees, I don’t know..
i was walking up behind a couple of girls and heard one say that her shoulders were hurting from her rucksack.. the other girl replied that they’d only hurt for two weeks because after that God would have deemed her worthy from her struggle.. I missed the reply, but it didn’t sound like she was too happy to have to wait two weeks!!
Weather was perfect for walking at 8am but did gradually get warmer and warmer, although there was quite a bit in the shade which was very welcome.. again spent the first hour and a half passing people.. keep waiting for a judge to jump out with a red paddle and accuse me of cheating 😳.. having said that, going through a biggish town before Pamplona all rucksacks ahead seemed to vanish and I kept worrying I’d gone wrong 😑
Made it to Pamplona in really good time, but then found out that my accommodation was 1 - 1.5 km away from the route.. big panic 😱 how do I find it.. bigger panic.. how will I find my way back to it on Monday morning 😬worked the first part out, but no idea if I will in the morning ..
Needless to say I arrived too early to check in.. so a beer and bite to eat it was!!
The hotel tonight is way bigger and posher than any of the others, but I definitely prefer them as they were much friendlier and Camino orientated.. I was a tad uncomfortable turning up at this one with a pack on my back!!
Off for my evening meal now.. can’t believe I couldn’t eat here before 8, that’s nearly my bed time 🥱 hope there’s something I like as I’m starving.. buenos noches..

      Pamplona, Navarra, Spain

      6 december 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Pamplona is home of the famous San Fermin festival, the Running of the Bulls. Hemingway made it famous in "The Sun Also Rises." What was once a small regional festival has turned into a worldwide spectacle every summer. We happened to be here on Constitution Day, a national holiday. We were afraid restaurants and bars would be closed, but we were wrong. The streets were full of Spanish familes on holiday and bars and restaurants were packed. It's nothing like during the San Fermin festival, but we were surprised at how many people were out and about.

We're at a little elevation now. The drive south from San Sebastian was pretty. We climbed through the foothills of the Pyrenees to get here, the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Navarre. And so it's a bit colder. But it wasn't raining on our first day here and we did most of our sightseeing then. We walked along the path that the bulls take, from pens above the Arga River and through the narrow streets of Pamplona, up to the bullring. Lots of shops sold the white pants, shirts, and sashes and bandanas that "mozos" wear when being chased by bulls.

We were in luck. The bullring is normally only open for the Feria in the summer for about 9 days. The rest of the year it's closed. But they're holding their Christmas market inside and we got to go in and see the ring from the inside. The market was more fun and had more interesting items than the market in the streets of San Sebastian. We walked all over town and had espressos in a cafe. We're 4 weeks into a 5 week trip, so we're slowing down a bit. It's still wonderful to just meander through cobblestone streets and see what a new city looks like. Most shops were closed anyway. That's why we booked a hotel with a sauna and we're making good use of it.

Today it's rainy and cold all day. I walked around solo after breakfast to explore some more. I invited a guy to share my table at a cafe and he happened to speak English. He was Philipino and was teaching English in Pamplona. He was in his third year teaching and had lived in several cities in Spain. We had a great talk about Spain, travels, and the Phillipines.

Pamplona is another charming Spanish city, but the weather is taking it out of us. We're laying low and looking forward to taking a train to Madrid tomorrow for our last stop before heading home. Buses are usually much cheaper and faster than trains in the north of Spain, but we found a train that is much faster and worth the extra expense. And it will have a cafe car on it, which I love.

      Rest day in Pamplona

      8 september 2023, Spanje ⋅ 🌙 73 °F

What can I say? Unbelievable, unexpected, and unforgettable. First, by chance, we met a local tour guide whose live online tours I followed during lockdown when I was recovering from spine surgery.

Then we met King Felipe and Queen Letizia who were here to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the unification of the three boroughs that became Pamplona.

We toured the beautiful cathedral and then saw the gigantes parading through town.

Just so you don't think our lives are all sunshine and butterflies, we left a suitcase at the hotel in Pamplona so that we could either offload some stuff or add new things to our backpacks. I had made several packets of my hair products that I intended to remove from the suitcase and put in my backpack for the rest of our Camino. Well, after we took the suitcase to the post office to send ahead to Santiago, I remembered that I didn't pull the hair products out and I really need to wash my hair. And Pat left his razor in the suitcase so we'll both be looking frightful. Oh well, it was still a stellar day.

      Pamplona/Iruña

      20 april 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C
