    Made it to Irun!

    June 4 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Four flights, a few hours sleep on the plane, and a 20 minute walk into town from the airport. In a couple of hours, I was able to mail two boxes, get my Spanish phone card, buy some fruit, yoghurt and nuts, wash my clothes, shower, and check the route out of town for tomorrow.

That left me just enough time (kitchens close at around 3:40 or 4:00 ) to get a bus to Hondarribia for my first ensalada mixta of this camino. Pretty, little, and very touristy Basque town.

I had my first (but surely not my last) GPS freakout. One minute all my tracks were there, and the next minute they were gone. Not sure what happened, but turning it off and on again did the trick!

I stopped off at the Albergue to get my credential stamped and got some info on our camino. Everyone else is walking the Norte, which also starts here, and which I walked with Dana in 2006 and alone in 2017. So it’s time for a new Camino.

Cannot wait to sleep. Alun should arrive within an hour and I will be holding my eyes open with toothpicks by then!

    107. Etappe: Irun

    October 25, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Über den Dächern der großen Stadt...

    June 13 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 13 °C

    July 6, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Sail training "evolution" with Spi en tête ar Hendaye. During 1 week we sailed on a boat Grand Surprise, we were just the both of us so it felt like a private training! It was great, Laurent was a wonderful teacher. Really complementary with my training in Hyere!Read more

    May 10, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I had a peaceful night at the Capitan Tximista albergue. There were about nine of us, so we had good chats at the communal dinner.

This albergue is in a very good location - on the Camino and a few kms from Irun. I didn't want to spend an afternoon and evening in Irun, so it was great to be able to do a short walk on my arrival day. This also has the advantage of shortening tomorrow's walk to San Sebastián.Read more

    Hondarrabia still

    August 14, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

So we managed to get a good nights sleep and felt much more alert today, forecast is good for the next week nice and settled so we will be heading on soon. Yesterday evening we watched a rowing regatta, looked like there were 13rowers and a cox, the course was out and back twice John thinks total of 4km. They were single sweep oars and fixed seat so lots of leaning back drawing the handle across their body. Very impressive. The local team were in green and although they were last in their heat the support from the crowd was great with lots of people wearing green clothes or neckerchiefs. The other things we are pleased about is that the sea is back to being a lovely green/blue colour not a churnedup yucky beige.
Today was very very hot 39c in shade, we faffed around this morning trying to make some plan for the next part of our adventure and did some baking, pannacotta, apple tart and chocolate muffins, before collapsing and dozing.
We met the owners of Ocho a Jersey registered motor cruiser again, we had first seen them in L'Aberach then again Roscoff and then just the boat at La Rochelle, apparently he had had to return for work but they are also heading towards the Mediterranean so might see them again. Late afternoon around 4 we re-provisioned I have decided we need to buy a shopping basket on wheels (think old lady shopping bag) coz the bag was heavy to carry but it was way to hot to use a rucksack, John also had a bag to carry just in case you thought I was only one working hard and getting warm.
We now also know that the temperature peaks at about 4 so will be going out earlier in future.

    May 16, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

I seem to have inadvertently chosen the prettiest place ever for my final night on this part of the journey. Hondarribia is so beautiful, especially the old part of the town where I'm staying tonight. I'll take the little ferry tomorrow, across the estuary to France. Really looking forward to returning to the Camino del Baztan.Read more

    Hondarrabia Spain

    August 13, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We made it 23hours of motor sailing and 141miles, the conditions were good light winds that died early Evening and by 5am sea flat. Our first sight of the Spanish coast as the sun rose was of mountains stunning.
We had tried to go to the French Port on the other side of the estuary, but once we got in and were along side another boat the marina rep came to say they were full. Why they hadn't just answered my radio call and told me that is anyones guess. We were going French just because we hadn't checked the Spanish phrases etc and after working 2hour watching shifts my brain was struggling. But needs must and I asked for a place in my best pigeon Spanish and yes Golf cinco (G5) was ours for the taking, still no wind so we got in OK with a fellow sailors assistance.
Town is different with what look like Swiss Mountain chalets as well as high rises. Off to bed now for a Siesta.
