    • Logroño to Nájera

      7 de septiembre de 2022, España ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

After our rest day we got after it and made it to Najera in good order. We air our feet out with a rest break after a few hours, change our socks after the midpoint and then a socks-off-foot-check-airing at the 3/4 point. It wasn't as hot today so the feet feel a bit better tonight. Now waiting for restaurants to open... Cause we be hungry!Leer más

Sun AM Walk - Logrono to Navarette

      2 de octubre de 2022, España ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Bright blue sky and warm temps were what we got today as we left Logrono. Many were out enjoying their Sun morning in the huge reservoir park we walked through. We saw a man playing a ukulele as he walked. There were also ducks, swans & lots of cyclists. It was hot walking, low 80 degree temps. We found some shade & had a picnic w cheese, ham, and croissants compliments of the hotel breakfast buffet. On our way into town through vineyards we met a guy who had been walking from Austria with a tent, and all his gear on a cart. We passed by a bull, a fence that people have used twigs and branches to make crosses, as well as Don Jacobo winery. We could see the steeple of the village church as we entered the village of Navarette. The church bells really do ring here. The inside of the church is beautiful.Leer más

      Santander here i come

      2 de junio de 2023, España ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

A trip to the bus station that ought to have taken 20 minutes has taken me an hour and ten minutes panicking that I was gonna miss my bus, picked up the pace and kept asking people on the street "Por favor, Ayudami, yo necesito El autobus estacion gracias...!! The Ayudami politely really works?! People laugh at me, a grown adult asking for help!! Glad to make their day and got here with twenty minutes to spare?

Just a couple of photos of breakfast this morning, so you see Sarah I took your advice! Grapefruit! A photo of the map to get here after I got lost..and the bus station that has people's homes right above it.! Imagine living there!

And we're away! Leaving logrono !! A cool 20 degrees here at the moment in Victoria...on way to Santander.nearly there, now 25 degrees out.. we've been through Victoria, Bilbao, la rozas, and I've seen the sea! What a wonderful sight!

      Bus ride to Najera

      30 de septiembre de 2023, España ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

So! My report from yesterday about feeling better was a little premature. David is feeling better! I am super sick now though. And with good reason! I tested positive for COVID. So we are hanging out in the hotel room in Nájera waiting impatiently for my immune system to beat up on the little COVID’s! 🦠

We don’t actually have pictures of much today as mostly we were masked and slinking from one hotel room to the bus and into another room. I have to figure out how to get David some food tonight. He gets disoriented so he can’t go on his own and I need to keep my germy self away from other people as much as possible. I haven’t eaten anything but a cup of yogurt and some soda and water in the last day and a half.

It seems like every person I’ve known who’s had COVID in the past few months has had a mild case. I’m not sure why I’m so sick! Hopefully I’ll have better news to report tomorrow!

      Day 9 - Logrono

      16 de septiembre de 2023, España ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Another day of big climbing in the hills: some vey steep sections but with nice long rolling descents. Found a squashed tarantula sized scorpion on the road - caution needed before sitting on any rocks. Another early start but we arrived before 3pm. We were greeted by the Rioja wine festival in full swing. The whole city is full and it is clear that red wine has been liberally spread about. Good atmosphere though and we’ll head out later to watch the marching band parades!
      52kms cycled today, 900m up, 950m down.

    • Día 34–35

      Logroño

      14 de mayo, España ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After our cooking class, we drove to Logroño. Well, Jeremy drove and put up with me as the anxious passenger. It rained most of the way, which did not help this little passenger relax. It took us a while to find our accommodation and our bnb host. Then it took awhile to shake her off. She was lovely but was up for a broken English chat.
The next morning, we headed out to the La Rioja region in search of wineries 🍷. The first Ysios was spectacular as the photos attest. The wine was nice but we did not purchase and send any home. A couple others we were hoping to visit weren't open. Marquis de Riscal was, and their range of wines were great.

Afterward, we headed to a wine museum, which was fascinating and housed a rather extensive display of bottle openers. Wine was able to be tasted here, too. A bottle was purchased but will be drunk before our return.

With lunch booked the next day at our next fancy restaurant...we headed back to San Sebastián. The La Rioja region was lovely and could easily spend more time there.

I was a slightly better passenger on our return. Much to our relief and our hip pocket, a huge dent in the car over two panels, which we only noticed at one of the wineries, was not our doing. The car hire place was already aware.

      Logrono, La Rioja

      28 de septiembre de 2022, España ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Whose stupid idea was it to walk 700+ km across Northern Spain by myself? The "I'm getting off the island" excitement has definitely worn off and the "It's a bloody long way to Santiago" reality has set in along with the "it would be much better if I'd brought someone with me to share the fun!"

Of course, this was all to be expected and in reality the first few weeks have flown by. Most of my Pilgrim friends are days of weeks ahead of me by now but there will be new people to meet again this week.

I've had my rest day in Logrono, capital of the La Rioja wine region. I did all the practical things like getting some new hiking sandals to try out on the trail, and some anti-inflammatory drugs in the hope that I can walk more than two days without needing a day off. And the laundry, I did that too.

I also slept a lot. The body is adjusting both to walking and the opportunity for a siesta. The shops in Spain never seem to be open. Most are open from 10-2 and some from 5-7 with the odd big store open 8 hours a day.

Cafes, normally called bars, are open longer but often the kitchen is shut until 8pm but there is a selection of tortillas (omelettes) and bocadillas (snacks) displayed on the counter. Alcohol and coffee seem to be served all day long.

I really do prefer the villages and countryside than the cities, and will think twice about whether to have a rest day in a city again. The Camino seems always to go through the historical heart and pass by all the must see sights so nothing is missed if you follow the Way.

Of course, the main attraction of La Rioja is the wine and I'll be passing by many vineyards over the coming days.

      Los Arcos to Logroño

      10 de abril, España ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

117 miles done. 383 to go.

Lunch was “the pilgrim’s meal” as typically served in establishments along the Camino. Huge salad with a local cheese selection, perfectly breaded chicken breast with potatoes, a flambéed apple dessert, espresso, AND an entire bottle of local sauvignon blanc. 15 euros! That’s crazy, right? I only had two glasses of wine from the bottle because I still had 6 miles of walking post-lunch.

Listened to 7 chapters of Nadia Bolz Weber’s audiobook, Shameless, while walking this morning and afternoon. There’s so much that resonates with memories of my upbringing in nondenominational churches in the 80s and 90s and thus my theological understanding shaped by purity culture, “kissing dating goodby,” WWJD, and then 8 years of reparative therapy that I was a part of, between Illinois and Colorado, by my own volition. There’s a lot to unpack with this book/audiobook, and if you’ve had a similar journey and would find it helpful to ever talk about God, faith, sexuality, fear, shame, etc., I’m glad to listen and share our life experiences together. I’m very grateful to those along the way that have been a lifeline to me… some of you who might read this know that you have been that for me, then, and still now. Thank you.

Today was a super long walking day. Not challenging in the ascents and descents, but challenging in length… stamina of keeping moving over the long distance. I’ve started to notice others who are walking the Camino route limping, slowing down, taking more breaks, and changing out bloody bandages on their feet. I’m grateful my feet are holding up so far, though I’m prepared in case I start to get blisters or hurt myself. I’ve got my routine of stretching, massaging my feet and calves, and applying body glide where I’m feeling the rub. It’s worked…so far.

But, in all the care for my feet, I neglected to care for the rest of me. And I got sunburned on the backs of my calves after hiking my pants up in the afternoon heat AND I had some sort of allergic reaction to the hotel soap this afternoon. So, there’s that. Not a fun combo. 😞 I gotta be more careful!

Also, they mix red wine and Coca-Cola here as a cocktail. Kalimotxo is what it is called.
I had to try it. The verdict is in… it’s good and odd. Sweet and tart. Different. Like me 😜

      Tapas paradise

      29 de julio de 2022, España ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Logroño is known as the gastronomical capital of Spain, so I went to check it out with my new friends Jane (from Ireland) and Lubo (Bulgarian living in Spain).
The photos were taken around 9pm, when the Calle Laurel starts buzzing. Note how clear the sky still is at that time!Leer más
