      Museum Frome

      July 6, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Another walkabout in Frome took me to the museum, housed in a quirky building with a round front...and elongated...not sure how old it is but it's a listed heritage building. Remains and artefacts going back to Roman times are on display alongside a dispensary from the early 1900s (1832, I believe)... So amazing to walk in the footsteps of ancestors who helped build the foundations of modern society.

Hunger struck me around mid morning so off I went in search of a vegan breakfast/brunch and came across the "Archangel" this building dated back to the1300s!! I'm just amazed these buildings stand the test of time although this one has been completely refurbished this century.. I'm definitely going back to take more photos of the interior. I loved it full off wee nooks and crannies inside. bliss!! 😂

      Bath and Bradford on Avon

      July 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Yesterday I sojourned to Trowbridge to fill up my phone data (no shop in frome!) ... and once there the young salesman suggested I get on a train and go one stop to Bradford on Avon. I did as I was instructed and thoroughly enjoyed my time there visiting the medievil "Thithe Barn" and then the Saxon Church (St. Lawrence) on the hill. Both date back 7 - 800 years to the 12th and 13th centuries.

I then visited the "Shambles" where I did some browsing and buying of a few wee things...as I got off the train, it was raining quite heavily and I had no clue where I was going so stopped at what I thought was a bus stop and asked the elders there where I oughtn't to miss visiting here in Bradford on Avon.

They both said in unison, "the Tithing Barn" a medievil barn, and then on to the Saxon Church on the hill (past St Margaret's car park and over the bridge) people are amazing even when you tell them you have no idea where you are, they still insist on saying stuff like "you know where such and such is?" ...haha!!! I just smile and tell them again I have no idea where I am or where I'm going. I think they all think I'm a bit mad! Perhaps I am, but just moving as the spirit takes me.

After the "Tithing Barn" I couldn't make head nor tail of the instructions the elders had given me. They weren;t waiting for a bus either. it turned out this was a waiting place between the doctors surgery and the pharmacy and the queue at the pharmacy was out the door and round the corner!! I felt sorry for them. As I wandered along the path by the river I stopped a couple of school girls (teens) and asked them if they knew the way to the Saxon Church, bless them, they walked me to the pathway and sent me on my way.

About two minutes later they came back to me and suggested they take me all the way there. I was concerned and told them I could find my way from there, but they insisted. And just as well they did as the way was quite convoluted. They finally let me go just at the bottom of the hill.

I sat awhile in the kirk contemplating the people who initially built the church and then the people who have helped restore it. Why do we keep holding on to past glories? What drives us to seek restoration, to hold onto that which was?

It was quite late by the time I got home, but very pleased with my finds today.

      Tower of London

      July 7, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

This afternoon we visited what will likely be our last "old thing"on this trip, the Tower of London. The area has been the fortified heart of London since Roman times, but things really stepped up here in 1066 when William the Conqueror decided to show the Anglo Saxon Londoners that he was not to be messed with and so he built the White Tower which still stands in the centre of this site.

It was an interesting visit, we got to see many suits of armor, ran into a beefeater or two, and saw the Crown Jewels.
A good way to finish off our tour of historical monuments.

      London

      May 4, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Our first day in London was a busy one - we walked 20,000 steps according to the Fitbit. So much so, we successfully managed a trip on the London Tube back from Westminster to Tower Hill using our Oyster cards instead of walking. We had had enough by then.

We saw Tower Bridge, went on the London Eye, walked around Westminster and through St. James Park to Buckingham Palace and then down The Mall to Admiralty Arch and Trafalgar Square.

Dinner was very English - a pub, a pint and cod & chips.

This is an amazing time to be in London to see the massive crowds and preparations for the Coronation on Saturday. Everywhere is decorated and security is very obvious. It seems every Bobby in England is in central London at the moment. We are very lucky to be a part of it.

      London & The Coronation

      May 6, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

An amazing day to be in London. We went in to Westminster along with a million others. We were very lucky to be in the right place at the right time and saw the Kings Guards on their way to the ceremony. Then we went to Hyde Park and watched the King leave the Palace on the big screen. It was very wet and after soaking up the atmosphere it was back to our hotel and the bar to watch the rest. It sounds simple but we walked nearly 10km getting from the train to Hyde Park and back to the train along absolutely packed roads. We feel very lucky to have been here and to be able to have experienced it.Read more

      Sightseeing in the rain

      November 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

By the time we left the Golden Hinde, it was truly raining.  This is the first time we got to really test out our new raincoats.  Well, I did at least, because I decided to take another walk through the city.  Russell headed over to the Tate Museum of Modern Art.

I ended up going through the City of London, which is the site of the original Roman settlement, but is now the financial center.  So it was very modern and pretty much deserted on a Sunday afternoon.

I eventually made my way to Covent Garden where they had a pretty extensive craft market set up.  Found a few fun things to buy.  The Christmas tree at Covent Garden was a site to behold.  Eventually, Russell met up with me and we both headed back to the hotel to rest before dinner.

    • Day 28

      St Paul's Cathedral etc

      August 19, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We saw what we could of London on foot today - a Tube free day. St Paul's Cathedral looked doable at 25 minutes according to Maps. Thankfully my legs were in working order and it was pleasant weather. It's quite nice to go for a leisurely stroll, and we happened upon things that we wouldn't have gone out of our way to see, like the Monument to the great fire of London.

St Paul's looked very grand. We didn't go inside, partly because a great coach load of tourists just arrived, and partly because we think we have spent enough funding the Anglican church for now. They certainly know how to charge for things here. It would set us back by $100. I've had Mary Poppins' "Feed the Birds" in my head ever since. It was very peaceful in the gardens.

Next we walked over the Millennium footbridge to the other side of the river, which got us to the Globe Theatre. Again, we didn't feel the need to part with another $100 for the tour. We sound stingy today! (There was one show we were tempted to splurge on: it was virtual reality interactive theatre not far from our hotel. But when we checked the fine print it was not recommended for people with mobility issues, epilepsy, back problems, respiratory allergies, fear of the dark or blood, those of a nervous disposition or who don't like sudden loud noises (among other things). I think the only one we didn't tick was pregnancy!)

We decided to cross back over the river on the Tower Bridge. Our stroll to the Bridge took us past The Golden Hinde replica ship and the HMS Belfast. We passed some vintage markets, but they didn't have much of interest.

We did a LOT of walking! It was punctuated by Cafe stops and park benches, but we were glad to get back to the hotel. We rested for about an hour before we decided to stroll back to the pier to see the Tower Bridge lift up to let a Dutch ship through. It has been a good day.

      London Tag 2

      June 12, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Es gab diesmal Fish and Chips and Moretti😂😋.
