Day 7a reflections from the seaside.

      4. elokuuta 2022, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

The BnB that i stayed in is famous for his breakfast pancakes so I indulged in breakfast this morning. Todays landscape was different as I entered the lakes district where as previously I was in the Yorkshire dales . I got to Bowness which is a seaside town where Brits flock to and today was no different . Haha it’s really a lake but it has the feels of the seaside. People everywhere and it was a little overwhelming after such solitude of the past 6 days. Tomorrow I head back to Yorkshire where I started
to prepare for my first music school at Giggleswick. My tired and blistered feet will be happy not to have to propel me over 20km 32000 steps

      The Lakes District

      26. joulukuuta 2019, Englanti ⋅ 🌧 3 °C

We woke to a pretty quite town outside. Everyone was starting a little late after Christmas Day. We wandered down the street and found a great cafe for brekky, before exploring the shops. We nearly had to call an ambulance when an old local took a tumble onto the road right in front of us! He was adamant he was ok so we helped him to his feet and some more local people kept a close eye on him as he made his way back to the local retirement village.
We perused Beatrix Potter world briefly but it wasn’t long before we were craving those amazing rolling hills again. So we jumped back in little blue and hit the road. We simply just followed our noses. Tunring left and right which ever way looked nicer. It wasn’t long before we were out of reception and following narrow farms tracks through the valleys. This was possibly one of the best days ever, exploring this vast and beautiful wilderness. We found a great spot on top of a massive hill. The fresh air and quiet stillness was really so relaxing.

With daylight running out we decided to head back. We found a random pub full of hikers and stopped for a bite to eat and drink before making our way back to the town.

Tomorrow we were going to make tracks for Scotland!

Waterfall at Stock Ghyll – Wansfell Pike

      22. toukokuuta 2023, Englanti ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Our last full day in Ambleside. It's a more chill day...for Grace. We started off with a walk through town to find a waterfall. After completing the loop of the waterfall I left Grace to find her way back while I tackled a mountain. Well, it's 460m, so technically it's not a mountain here, but it is a very big hill.

Half way up I realised Grace made the right choice. The slope had a gradient of over 30% in places, and it just kept going. However the view more than made up for the struggle up the hill.

I wandered lonely as a cloud

      6. lokakuuta 2022, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

…….that floats on high…. Ok enough you get it. Wordsworth country. We’re in the Lake District after flying from Lisbon to Manchester yesterday and driving up here in the afternoon. No daffodils but beautiful rolling hills and stone walls. Saw where Wordsworth is buried, the house he lived in plus Dove Cottage and Museum. Dove Cottage where he lived and wrote a lot of his poems. Was fantastic. It was a full day where we did what is expected. Ie ate scones with jam and cream and took a country stroll. Gazed upon herds of black faced sheep that dot the countryside. Think the breed is Herdwick. It’s also Derwent coloured pencil land. It’s a good time to come here, colours of autumn makes me want to get some pencils and start colouring in. Also…. plenty of hiking shops and I admit to spending a bit getting some great waterproof gloves and a few other things. Ready for our next hiking adventure. 👏😊 (am going to need to reconsider giving up hiking 😬)Lue lisää

      Lancaster > Ambleside - 90km

      20. toukokuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Lake District NP

      6. syyskuuta 2023, Englanti ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Although this national park is mostly famous for - you guessed it - its 16 lakes, we couldn't ignore Scafell Pike, the highest peak of England. We did a bigger loop to avoid the most popular route, and pitched our tent at Angle Tarn on the way up. With all these beautiful lakes around here and the amazing weather, it was time to bring out our paddle board! We paddled the whole length of Ullswater (much more peaceful than a lake cruise) and hitchhiked back to Otto.Lue lisää

      Grasmere

      19. toukokuuta 2023, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

This morning we drove through the stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales and the Pennines and then through Cumbria and the amazing Lakes District with miles and miles of dry stone walls dividing the fields of farms with their stone farm houses.

Our first stop was Grasmere, home of William Wordsworth (who is buried there), Beatrix Potter, Peter Rabbit and Herdwick sheep. Grasmere was a special place and it and its surrounding scenery was visually stunning.

It was then into Scotland as we made our way to Edinburgh. The drive there was amazing also - lush green farmlands, rolling green hills and sheep everywhere. It is a greener green than you could ever imagine. No wonder the sheep, which are everywhere, look so healthy.

These photos are all of Grasmere.

      Be careful when running 🍀🍀🍀

      22. syyskuuta 2023, Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

      Parken, Handbremse anziehen fertig 👍

      Kirby Stephen to Keld

      12. toukokuuta, Englanti ⋅ 🌩️ 14 °C

Hurray. I have made it to Keld which is officially considered the half way point of the coast to coast trail. I have also crossed over the Pennines which are a hilly part of England separating the watersheds of western England from eastern England. The first part of the day was a gradual hike up to the top of the Pennines gaining 400 metres. At the top of the Pennines there are 9 large cairns made from stones that can be seen from the valleys below. They have been there for so long that no one remembers what their purpose was. Possibly to mark a boundary of different kingdoms. After a break at the top and a snack, I headed off towards one of the most potentially challenging parts of the trip which I had been worried about. The peat bogs of the Pennines. We don't have peat bogs in Edmonton but these are marshy/muddy areas which are difficult to walk through because one can literally get stuck in the mud. People can sink into the bogs up to their knees resulting in having a very messy day. Fortunately because we have had so little rain for the last week the bogs were the driest they have been for months. I was able to navigate without too much trouble. Once I stuck my hiking poles to check a rather boggy part and it sunk down a couple feet. I also managed to sink in once to my ankle when vaulting over one of the muddy areas. It was fun as the bogs weren't too boggy. I walked through the bogs and onto Keld with Nick a teacher from Brighton Beach. He is half camping and hoteling and carrying a full pack. He was camping tonight and as I type this blog there is an incredible thunder store going on outside so I hope he is staying dry. I pity the poor hikers coming across the Pennines tomorrow. I made it into Keld and had a snack with Nick and three women day hikers from Richmond who we had met towards the end of the day. Then off to the Keld hotel where I have been assigned a very warm room above the drying room. The owner says the drying room heat goes off at 9 so I should be all right.Lue lisää
