      Glenmorangie Distillery

      Endlich hat es geklappt, eine Führung durch eine Destillerie zu buchen. Enttäuschend, dass man währenddessen nicht fotografieren durfte. Angeblich wegen des entzündlichen Alkoholgehaltes in der Luft. Komisch, dass wir dann aber rein durften und auch überall Strom war...
      Ich wäre nicht ich, hätte ich nicht aus der Hüfte fotografiert.

      Die Giraffe hat übrigens damit zu tun, dass es dort die höchsten Brennblasen Schottlands gibt.

      Ach, und weil ich drei Whisky trinken "musste", hatte ich leicht einen sitzen. Auch schön.      Meer informatie

      Smoo Cave

      Am nordwestlichen Zipfel Schottlands befindet sich die sogenannte Smoo Cave. Eine Höhle mit einem Wasserfall. Ein Schild mit der Aufschrift "Free Waterfall" signalisierte einen freien Eintritt - falsch gedacht. Um zum Wasserfall zukommen muss man pro Person 10 Pfund für einen Helm und ein Paddelboot ausgeben. Da wir mit Boot fahren nicht die besten Erfahrungen gemacht haben, haben wir es sein gelassen.
      Die Höhle innen kann man sich trotzdem teilweise anschauen und ein kleiner Steg führt hinein.      Meer informatie

      Alton Towers THEME PARK!

      Alton Towers Resort is a theme park and resort complex in Staffordshire, England, near the village of Alton. The park is operated by Merlin Entertainments Group and incorporates a theme park, water park, mini golf, and hotel complex.

      We all had a good sleep, good brekkie, and we are off for the day. We're road tripping in two cars. "Team, Boys" and "Team Girls"

      I should mention that the obstacle we have today is the rain. It's not torrential. However, it's joining us 😬

      First, we went to the cbeebies area for the kids, and we tried the pirate ship. Later, we took a stroll around the park and had our picnic lunch, with a show. Andy, Ben, Mal, and I tried to get ourselves on a roller coaster ride. Successful, even though we waited in line for an hour, we hopped on the ride called "Thirteen," which was awesome 👌 very thrilling! Ben and I can now say we have gone on our first ever roller coaster. Next, Mal and I hopped on Oblivion, which was a short yet explosive ride with a shear drop into a hole.

      We had a look in the SharkBait Reef and saw some amazing sea life. We grabbed a light refreshment, hit the arcade for a bit, and then went to the gift shop before we got back on the road to come home.

      It was a wonderful day. We are wet, cold, and tired, but many core memories have been made. The Crilly, Knight, Howey, Wade Clan have dominated Alton Towers 2024.      Meer informatie

      Ambleside > Glenridding - 70km

      Cela pourrait être une petite journée tranquille mais bon, autant ne pas faire au plus simple, surtout quand il pleut ! Voici le résumé de la journée qui arrive.

      En effet, sur le papier, seulement une vingtaine de kilomètres séparent le point de départ du point d'arrivée, une auberge de jeunesse proche du lac de Ullswater.
      Mais on décide tout d'abord de passer par Cathedral Cave, une ancienne carrière, avec une chambre de 12 mètres de haut, possédant des ouvertures sur l'extérieur, rendant le tout assez impressionnant.
      Le temps de faire le tour, la pluie rejoint la partie : elle ne nous quittera pas de la journée !
      Nous faisons tout de même une pause proche du lac Grasmere, pour réfléchir à la suite de la journée. Après une hésitation sur le fait de raccourcir la trace, nous voilà tout de même partis en direction de Keswick, en longeant tout d'abord le magnifique lac Thilrmere, via une route où nous sommes seuls, ça rattrape un peu la situation !
      Nous arrivons donc à Keswick, petite ville touristique au nord du lac de Derwentwater. Malgré les nombreux visiteurs, nous apprécions faire un petit tour dans la ville, et nous trouvons difficilement une place dans une pizzeria. Il nous faut bien un bon repas avant ce que l'après-midi nous réserve !

      En effet, il est prévu de passer par la Old Coach Road, un chemin caillouteux parcourant les flancs de Clough Head et de Matterdale Common, à l'extrémité nord de la chaîne Helvellyn. On se retrouve finalement assez rapidement à pied à côté des vélos, à pousser notre fardeau sous la pluie et le vent. Les paysages somptueux et vides de toute activité humaine, à part nous, nous réconfortent les yeux et nous aident à oublier tous nos problèmes.
      Nous progressons doucement vers l'auberge de jeunesse : un dernier défi nous attend pour l'atteindre. Ce n'est pas celui de faire les courses, que nous faisons dans une petite supérette, en l'inondant à moitié au passage avec nos tenues trempées, mais c'est plutôt d'emprunter le chemin de l'auberge : il s'agit encore d'un chemin caillouteux, en montée, vent de face, chargés avec nos courses du soir...

      Heureusement, une "drying room" (salle de séchage pour les non-anglophones) nous attend là-bas, permettant de faire sécher toutes nos affaires ! À chaque jour suffit sa peine, un bon gros repas préparé par Bastien dans la cuisine commune, et nous nous reposons pour la suite de la semaine...      Meer informatie

      Tower of London, UK

      Today we went to the Tower of London. It is a palace, fortress and jail all in one. The building was started by William The Conqueror, the first king of England, who made the bit in the middle called the White Tower. Kings and queens kept adding to it until it was what it is today. Although it is called the Tower of London, it is not very tall. We found out that it was a menagerie, which is like a zoo. It is not any more, but there were lions, a polar bear and monkeys amongst many others. We then saw the crown jewels. They were very sparkly with all the diamonds, and other gems in it. In the Crown Jewels, there are lots of cool items, like crowns, swords and scepters. The weirdest thing I found was a spoon. It was used to apply Holy Oil to the monarch at their coronation. You might remember watching King Charles's coronation. If you remember that he went behind some curtains and got undressed. Then the priest would have sprinkled him with Holy oil before he got dressed.
      We then saw torture machines. There was the thing were you were tied and stretched, which was called the rack, and there were lots of other stuff.
      And we saw a lot of ravens. There is a legend that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, the kingdom will fall. At the gift shop I bought a tea towel that had all the kings and queens on it in order from William the Conqueror to King Charles the 3rd.       Oban, West Coast

      Every bit of travel info led me to believe that the highlands had the scenery, but I’m now thinking the scenery of Scotland is the West Coast. 3 hours west from Glasgow and I’m on a solo adventure in Oban. A very nice looking seaside town. Larger than Port Isaac ( where they film the Doc Martin series and we visited back in 2020), but equal in feel and lovely buildings, complete with bell ringing clock tower. Time enough for dinner and early to bed as my tour of the Outer Hebrides islands starts at 7:00am.-PamMeer informatie

      Lake District - 70km

      Nous partons sous un ciel un peu gris, mais pas trop menaçant, pour une « balade » de 70km, 1500m de dénivelé et 3 cols (dont 1 que nous ferons 2 fois, on aime bien la difficulté !).
      Nous débutons la journée en longeant Elterwater, un beau petit court d’eau, traversons Little Langdale, une vallée très verte et entamons la grimpette avec la première montée de Wrynose Pass qui culmine à 393m avec seulement 3,3km de montée, ça grimpe dur… Une jolie rivière accompagne la montée avec de petites cascades par endroit ainsi que nos éternels amis les moutons, eux sont bien toujours là avec leurs lots d’agneaux. Puis on enchaîne rapidement avec le Hardknott Pass : on ne le savait pas à ce moment-là mais c’est la montée la plus pentue d’Angleterre avec un passage à 30%, un autre à 25%, une moyenne totale de 14% et… nous avons réussi à rester sur les vélos jusqu’en haut ! Apparemment ce col est un des must du cyclisme sur route en Angleterre, un peu comme le Galibier en France.
      Les descentes font plaisir, presque autant que les montées.
      Après un déjeuner bien mérité, nous faisons une boucle dans la vallée de Duddon, passons devant la petite gare de Dalegarth et apercevons un vieux train qui fonctionne encore en tant qu’attraction touristique et permet de traverser la vallée.
      Ensuite, nous montons sur un plateau pour aller admirer le Tarn Devoke, enfin de l’eau dans cette région des lacs !
      Pour finir la journée, nous reprenons la route, repassons par le Wrynose Pass et descendons à Ambleside pour quelques courses avant de retourner au camping, éreintés par cette journée.      Meer informatie

      Highland Games

      Ich habe recht behalten. Die Atholl Highlanders Gathering fanden im Regen statt. Daher haben wir nicht soviel davon gesehen. Es war auf jeden Fall schön voll und die Wettkämpfe weit weg. Also noch einmal in das Blair Castle (kostet ja mix als Member of Historic Houses). Schnell einen sehr leckeren Angus Burger gegessen, Angelika Fries und dann ab!Meer informatie

      Felkirk Water Wheel

      The great thinker Arcemedies was correct. A space of water weighs the same no matter what you put in the water. Displacement offsets and the weight stays the same.

      Put this idea into practice with some steel and technology, and you solve the problem of moving canal boats up hill. Instead of a lock there is a huge water wheel.

      Watch a YouTube if you want to know about the science, but trust me, watching the wheel go around and thinking about the mechanics kept us occupied for several hours.

      The photos don’t do it justice, you’ll have to come and see it for yourself. Or, better yet, come and rent a canal boat for the week and ride the wheel and see Scotland from the canals. We won’t tick that box off my list this trip, but we will one day.      Meer informatie
