      Smoo Cave

      May 28 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Alton Towers THEME PARK!

      May 28 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Alton Towers Resort is a theme park and resort complex in Staffordshire, England, near the village of Alton. The park is operated by Merlin Entertainments Group and incorporates a theme park, water park, mini golf, and hotel complex.

We all had a good sleep, good brekkie, and we are off for the day. We're road tripping in two cars. "Team, Boys" and "Team Girls"

I should mention that the obstacle we have today is the rain. It's not torrential. However, it's joining us 😬

First, we went to the cbeebies area for the kids, and we tried the pirate ship. Later, we took a stroll around the park and had our picnic lunch, with a show. Andy, Ben, Mal, and I tried to get ourselves on a roller coaster ride. Successful, even though we waited in line for an hour, we hopped on the ride called "Thirteen," which was awesome 👌 very thrilling! Ben and I can now say we have gone on our first ever roller coaster. Next, Mal and I hopped on Oblivion, which was a short yet explosive ride with a shear drop into a hole.

We had a look in the SharkBait Reef and saw some amazing sea life. We grabbed a light refreshment, hit the arcade for a bit, and then went to the gift shop before we got back on the road to come home.

It was a wonderful day. We are wet, cold, and tired, but many core memories have been made. The Crilly, Knight, Howey, Wade Clan have dominated Alton Towers 2024.

      Tower of London, UK

      May 27 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today we went to the Tower of London. It is a palace, fortress and jail all in one. The building was started by William The Conqueror, the first king of England, who made the bit in the middle called the White Tower. Kings and queens kept adding to it until it was what it is today. Although it is called the Tower of London, it is not very tall. We found out that it was a menagerie, which is like a zoo. It is not any more, but there were lions, a polar bear and monkeys amongst many others. We then saw the crown jewels. They were very sparkly with all the diamonds, and other gems in it. In the Crown Jewels, there are lots of cool items, like crowns, swords and scepters. The weirdest thing I found was a spoon. It was used to apply Holy Oil to the monarch at their coronation. You might remember watching King Charles's coronation. If you remember that he went behind some curtains and got undressed. Then the priest would have sprinkled him with Holy oil before he got dressed.
We then saw torture machines. There was the thing were you were tied and stretched, which was called the rack, and there were lots of other stuff.
And we saw a lot of ravens. There is a legend that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, the kingdom will fall. At the gift shop I bought a tea towel that had all the kings and queens on it in order from William the Conqueror to King Charles the 3rd. I bought it because I like a song called the Monarch Song from Horrible Histories. You can watch the video at the next URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSvKc-8frp8
      Did you like it?
We then went to Pizza Express and I had a spaghetti bolognaise.
We are now in our hotel room.
Tomorrow we take a train to Leicester, see you then!

      Oban, West Coast

      May 27 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Every bit of travel info led me to believe that the highlands had the scenery, but I’m now thinking the scenery of Scotland is the West Coast. 3 hours west from Glasgow and I’m on a solo adventure in Oban. A very nice looking seaside town. Larger than Port Isaac ( where they film the Doc Martin series and we visited back in 2020), but equal in feel and lovely buildings, complete with bell ringing clock tower. Time enough for dinner and early to bed as my tour of the Outer Hebrides islands starts at 7:00am.-PamRead more

      Highland Games

      May 26 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

      Felkirk Water Wheel

      May 25 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

The great thinker Arcemedies was correct. A space of water weighs the same no matter what you put in the water. Displacement offsets and the weight stays the same.

Put this idea into practice with some steel and technology, and you solve the problem of moving canal boats up hill. Instead of a lock there is a huge water wheel.

Watch a YouTube if you want to know about the science, but trust me, watching the wheel go around and thinking about the mechanics kept us occupied for several hours.

The photos don’t do it justice, you’ll have to come and see it for yourself. Or, better yet, come and rent a canal boat for the week and ride the wheel and see Scotland from the canals. We won’t tick that box off my list this trip, but we will one day.

      The Edinburgh 10k and Marathon

      May 25 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

In the three months since retirement, Marc has gone from walking a block to a 10k. I’m so crazy proud of him for doing it. He won’t be first, but it’s his first and that’s a place to start.

      Well done you!!!

      Plumbridge

      May 25 in Northern Ireland ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

      Soleil !! ☀️

      Papa Stour and Foula

      May 24 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

The ship sailed overnight and we arrived at the north end of the island of Papa Stour at 7am.

Papa Stour is the most westerly island of the main Shetland group, and has a small permanent population of approximately 15. It's coastline has a wide variety of caves, stacks, blowholes, arches and cliffs. It is among these features we spent to morning cruising in zodiacs and spotting bird and seals.

Our zodiac driver for the morning was Falcon Scott, grandson of Robert Falcon Scott (of the Antarctic), who is the resident historian on our cruise. When we visited Antarctica a few years ago the resident historian was Jonathan Shackleton (cousin of Ernest), so all we needed on our next trip is a relative of Roald Amundsen and we have the Antarctic explorers trifecta!

We returned to the ship for lunch as the ship relocated to Foula Island, 28km west of the main group of Shetland Islands. It is privately owned and has a population of 30.

We anchored off shore and used zodiacs to ferry us to the main harbour, Ham Voe. When we arrived the island was under heavy cloud, but as the afternoon went on, the sun came out and we stripped off layers of clothes until we were down to t-shirts... and wishing we had worn shorts!

We walked around the coastal path as far as the airport , and returned via the main road to the school where the children were selling items to support the school of 5 students.

The swell began to rise as we returned to the ship and we had a particularly hairy (and wet) transfer from the zodiac to the ship.

We set sail just after 5pm for our journey to The Faroes.

Auf dem Weg zur Isle of Skye

      May 24 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C
