    Las Cruces

    September 28, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Nach den Aliens ging es zurück in die richtige Welt.
    Nächster Stopp:

    White Sands National Monument.

    Tucson, Arizona

    April 7, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Dry. Very, very dry.

Las Cruces, New Mexico only gets 9-10 inches of rain FOR THE WHOLE YEAR! Contrast that with Virginia's annual rate of 43 inches.

The land is dusty. Sandy. Very little green around except where we saw some irrigation ditches that provide water to the crops. Then you had lush fields of green.

And pecan trees. We saw mile after mile of pecan trees.

The drive from Las Cruces, New Mexico to Tucson, Arizona was filled with warning signs about dust storms.

    Pull onto shoulder.
    Turn off car.
    No headlights.
    No brake lights.
    Buckle up.

Wow! Thank goodness we did not have a lot of wind.

But we did have trains. Lots and lots of trains carrying all sorts of products.

    I love trains.

We arrived in Tucson where the landscape is a little greener and dotted with palm trees and cacti.

After all, they get 11 - 12 inches of rain a year.

    Las Cruces, New Mexico

    April 6, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We met the caravan at Tularosa High School in Tularosa, New Mexico at 6:30 AM and drove escorted through the White Sands Missle Testing Range to Trinity Site where the first atomic bomb was tested at 5:29:45 AM on July 16, 1945.

Security was very tight because we were actually driving on an active testing range. The army has an Open House twice a year to view ground zero, where the actual detonation of the bomb took place.

A lava stone obelisk was erected to mark the spot.

    Carlsbad nach Las Cruses

    June 30, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

    Almagordo, New Mexico

    October 7, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Could not go to White Sands in the morning due to government misspelled testing, so went to Pistachioland for a tour and some tastes. In the afternoon went to White Sands to see the gypsum dunes. We took lots of photos, and Sean and I went sledding down the sand hills. The evening was spent on a sunset stroll at the dunes with one of the park rangers.Read more

Almagordo to Las Cruces, New Mexico

    October 8, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

In the morning there were wonderful clouds in the sky so we went back to White Sands to take more photos. We hiked the hills to find pristine dunes without foot traffic. Next we drove to Organ Mountain where we hiked some steep slopes. Later in the day drove to Las Cruces where we had a great lunch at the Spotted Dog Brewery then went to the Hilton 2 Hotel where we hung out and relaxed. Had dinner at the Cold Stone Creamery!Read more

    Driving thru Mesilla

    November 13, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Las Cruces was huge and spread out, and we pretty much drove straight through. But we got off the highway just to the West of the city to take a look at Mesilla ... an old Spanish town with many of the original buildings still intact and in use. They were even setting up a market in the town square in front of the old church. We passed by the building where Billy the Kid was tried and convicted. We thought we might eat there, but the narrow streets were too much for the geezer-mobile so we headed on West.Read more
