      Waikiki Beach

      Heute habe ich erstmal richtig ausgeschlafen. Mittags bin ich dann direkt zum Waikiki Beach, wohin Mel schon vorgegangen war. Dort haben wir in der Sonne entspannt. Ich habe mir zwischendurch eine Açaíbowl zum Frühstück geholt. Später habe ich mir vom Hostel ein Surfbrett ausgeliehen und bin etwas Surfen gewesen. Bisher hat mich Hawaii zum Surfen allerdings nicht überzeugt: auch hier waren die Wellen wieder sehr klein. Tofino und San Diego waren deutlich besser. Am Abend kam Christina dann auch zum Sonnenuntergangschauen dazu.
      Wir haben dann gemeinsam im Hostel Spaghetti gekocht.
      Später haben wir uns noch mit zwei anderen Mädels getroffen und haben am Strand ein paar Cocktails getrunken. Um aufs Klo zu gehen, haben wir uns jedes Mal in ein mega edles Hotel geschlichen, es ist immer interessant sich sowas mal anzuschauen.😄      Read more

      Aloha Honolulu

      Acht Stunden dauerte der Flug von Auckland nach Honolulu, die Hauptstadt von Hawaii. Schlafen konnten wir kaum, deshalb nutzen wir die Zeit um den ersten Teil der Herr der Ringe Triologie zu sehen. Viele Dinge kamen uns vom Hobbiton Movie Set sehr bekannt vor. Da sich die Zeitzone zurück verschob und unser Flug am Abend von Auckland startete konnten wir denselben Tag, den 10. März 2020 zweimal erleben. In Honolulu angekommen brachte uns ein Uber zum Hotel, wo uns Jessica bereits erwartete. Am berühmten Waikiki-Beach, gings dann das erste Mal seit sechs Wochen wieder ins Meer. Blaues, klares, nicht allzu kaltes Wasser, herrlich für eine Abkühlung. Vom Strand war allerdings nicht viel zu sehen, denn er war mit Menschen überfüllt. Für den Anfang hat dies jedoch gereicht, denn das Sommerfeeling war wieder hier, juhu. Am Nachmittag trafen wir uns mit Ronny (Marcos Bruder) und seiner Freundin Jasmin, die ebenfalls hier im Urlaub sind.Read more

      Plan B

      Since I had no preplanned accommodation reservations and was taking advantage of last-minute bookings, I always had in the back of my mind the need for a Plan B. During week 3 of our holiday I tired of the endless hours on the computer hoping to catch a deal for the next week, which were dwindling. I was also getting restless and bored. The predominant attraction of Hawaii is the beach and it doesn’t have the appeal that it once did. I used to be very naive about the ocean but this week a group of tiger sharks had been spotted near shore and a 20 year old Swedish tourist got swept out to sea while she was just standing at the water’s edge. Her body has never been found.

      So I started looking at other options for my remaining time in Hawaii. If I had to pay top dollar for accommodation in Hawaii then I wanted more bang for my buck. I decided I was going to take a 2 week cruise of New Zealand and booked a flight to Sydney, returning from Auckland. I asked JS if he was interested in joining me. He thought about it for one minute and then declined. It was 39 years ago that JS and I took our first trip together to AU and NZ but he still didn’t take the bait. Plan B didn’t work out as well as I had hoped. Since I had to pay the full fare for 2 passengers on the cruise (no discounts for solo travellers), I waited to see if there would be a drop in price, which never materialized. Then there was the daily news of the deadly Coronavirus and how it was impacting the cruise industry. The final straw was weather reports of a cyclone that was expected to make landfall near Sydney with warnings of high seas on the day the cruise would be departing. My gut was telling me not to go on the cruise although this was the simplest plan. Back to the drawing board....it was time for Plan C and time was running out!      Read more

      Day Trip Oah'u

      Mit dem am Vorabend reservierten Mietwagen von Alamo (gleich um die Ecke des Moana Surfrider Hotel) gehts als erstes auf zum Diamond Head Crater. Zu unserem Bedauern hatte der Diamond Head heute (Freitag) geschlossen (leider stand auch nichts im Internet). Also weiter zur Hanauma Bay, dort werden $1 zum Parken fällig und $7,50 für das betreten des Badestrands. Dort kann geschnorchelt, getaucht, gesurft und gebadet werden. Die Überlegung am oberen Bay Rand spazieren zu gehen wurde in Betracht gezogen, war uns aber zu unspektakulär. Also entschieden wir uns den Koko Head crater auf der anderen Strassen Seite zu Fuss zu erklimmen. Was sich als Herausforderung rausstellte. Der Weg zum Crater bestand aus einem alten Gleisbau (auf den Fotos zu sehen) und war extrem Steil. Unbedingt ausreichend Wasser mitnehmen. Nach 60min haben wir es dann doch geschafft, allerdings völlig erschöpft, mir wurde es am Crater Rand dann doch schwindelig und schlecht. Allerdings wurden wir durch die wunderbare Aussicht entschädigt. Der Abstieg war durch das steile Gelände auch nicht ganz einfach, aber einen Hawaii‘aner stört das nicht der schnallt sich sogar noch Fussgewichte mit Bleiweste um und nimmt sich Hanteln mit🙈💪👌.
      Unsere weitere Reise führte uns weiter um den Süden der Insel, an der Küste im Westen bis zum North shore, weiter auf die Westseite und nochmals ins Landesinnere. Vieles wird einfach beim Vorbeifahren besichtigt, Strände und Städte sind an den Hauptstrassen gut anzusehen aber nichts besonderes. Die $16 für den Waimea Falls haben wir uns gespart, wäre eine schöne Landschaft gewesen aber die wird ganz sicher durch die folgenden Inseln getopt.

      Day 20

      Aloha Oahu (Day 2)

      Lathered in 3 layers of SPF100 sunscreen, we jump aboard our old school bikes (looking like locals) and return to Waikiki beach for a full day of riding waves. We arrive at 8am and meet our quirky contact Ricky (who runs a sketchy board lease syndicate) to pick up our long boards.

      The beach is quiet at this hour as the sun is still rising so we paddle out ready for action. After catching our 'career' best waves, we lie on the beach to strengthen our tans (or sunburn) and stroll along the esplande stopping at 'Me BBQ' for a delicious korean lunch. By picking up some spare parts for the GoPro we return to the water for the next session. With the additional pressure of the GoPro recording our moves, we fail to produce redbull xtreme sports worthy footage and fill the memory card with countless stacks and failed attempts.

      Back home, we scrub up and ride the bus downtown to catch up with John and Germaine for drinks followed by a traditional hawaiian dinner at 'Highway Inn' and an outdoor art performance. Exhausted we crash early and await our trip to the big island tomorrow.      Read more

      Honolulu - Day 4

      After a restful sleep & a bit of a lie-in, we woke to another glorious day and viewed a group of stand up paddle boarders practising at the Hilton Hawaiian Village lagoon. This inspired us to get up and enjoy the weather; so we jumped on the bus & headed up to Waikiki Beach. We also took in the shopping strip - every flash shopping joint you can think of is located here. You could spend thousands...

      We had lunch at The Cheesecake Shop in Waikiki - Yum!, & stopped to get a photo of the statue of Duke Kahanamoku - olympic champion & father of international surfing.

      Pauly & I got our picture taken with some beautiful parrots that were owned by, what looked like, a homeless bloke. After the shots he wanted $10 to "feed the birdies". Lol! We got stung big time, but it made for a great photo op 💰

      In the afternoon we hit the beach for some more sun. It was lovely 🌞. Recharged, we are now heading back to the shops for some more retail therapy and to hopefully find a good coffee...      Read more

      Nach 13.340 geflogenen Kilometern sind wir endlich am Ziel - Hawaii :-)

      Mit einer traditionellen Lei-Begrüßung werden wir am Flughafen von Honolulu in Empfang genommen - hier lernen wir erstmal die bekannte Hawaiische Gelassenheit kennen - das Begrüßungsteam lässt sich durch genervte Engländer und Neuseeländer nicht aus der Ruhe bringen - mit dem Shuttle geht es dann zu unserem Hotel.
      Das Zimmer ist leider erst ab 15 Uhr beziehbar so das wir erstmal ca. 2 Std. überbrücken müssen - die Zeit nutzen wir für einen ersten Rundgang durch Waikiki sowie einen Abstecher zum Strand.
      Nachdem wir das Zimmer (21. Etage) bezogen haben lässt sich Anna nicht mehr bremsen - es geht endlich in Badeklamotten zum weltberühmten Strand von Waikiki...      Read more

      Oaho adventures

      Arrived in Honolulu this morning. We hopped on the local bus to Waikiki where we got a 50cc scooter each. The guys were very friendly and I "corroborated" my online research with their local advise and off we went. Rocked the right side of the road driving on the scooter, I was a tad nervous at first as the roads are way busier than Bermuda, but didn't overthink it too much.

      We Stopped at Kuilei cliff Beach park on our way to Hanauma Bay, for some snorkeling, then hiked Koko head. We chased the sunset back to Honolulu via Diamond Head and all the lookout points along the way. Enjoyed watching the surfers 🏄. We returned the bikes just after sunset & walked along Waikiki beach.

      We had a fantastic day. I loved the mountains and the contrasts.I expected it to be more touristy based on other peoples feedback that visited before. Don't get me wrong Waikiki is very commercialized but again "moenie jou ore uitleen nie" (don't listen too much to other people); experience things and write your own story. Pearl Harbor will have to wait for another day, nothing beats being outdoors.
