      Sante Fe (New Mexico)

      Today we arrived in the charming Sante Fe in the Sangre de Cristo foothills of New Mexico. Santa Fe was founded as a Spanish colony in 1610 and is renowned for its Pueblo-style architecture and as a creative arts hotbed today. In the afternoon we went to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum to see the wonderful paintings of this renowned American artist who spent much of her time in New Mexico.       Albuquerque und Santa Fe

      Wegen unserer Stand-Heizung suchen wir in Albuquerque einen Mechaniker auf. Wir werden sehr nett und sofort bedient. Die Heizung wird gereinigt, weil die richtigen Ersatzteile aber fehlen, kann sie nicht repariert werden - also doch Öfeli und Elektrokabel im Walmart kaufen.

      Wir durchstreifen Albuquerque, die grösste Stadt im Wüstenhochland New Mexicos und essen zu Mittag, und fahren weiter zu unserm Camping im nahen Wald am Stadtrand, sehr idyllisch und ruhig. "Do not feed bears, bears are dangereous" - Dies erinnert uns an unseren Besuch vor vielen Jahren im Yosemite National Park; es tönt immer noch gleich.

      Am nächsten Tag fahren wir nach Norden, weil wir glauben, eine kleine Strasse in das Tal zu Santa Fe, unser neues Ziel, gefunden zu haben. An einem Fotostopp werden wir von Carol, einer ehemaligen GB Airforce-Pilotin auf unser Auto angesprochen. Sie bestätigt uns, dass es diesen Weg gibt und er mit unserm Auto kein Problem sei. Wir geniessen die steinige Strasse durch die Hügel mit z.T. unglaublicher Aussicht. Im Tal angekommen möchten wir Santo Domingo Puebla, das Indianer Reservat, besuchen. Zum ersten Mal wird von uns ein Covid Zertifikat verlangt. Zudem weist der Ranger darauf hin, dass striktes Fotoverbot herrscht (Busse bis Dollar 5000.—🥴).

      Erwartungsvoll fahren wir weiter und werden bitter enttäuscht. Keine Indianer, die heute übrigens nicht mehr Indianer genannt werden wollen, sondern American Natives, sind zu sehen. Ein ausgestorbenes armseliges Dorf mit vielen Lehmhäusern (fotografieren war ja verboten), ein paar Kühe und Pferde in der Hitze ohne Sonnenschutz im Dreck und eine Kirche, war alles was wir gesehen haben. Sind wir am falschen Ort?

      Wir entschliessen uns, nach Santa Fe zu fahren. Dort angekommen, beginnt es zu regnen. Trotzdem begeistert uns der erste Eindruck. Kurz entschlossen entscheiden wir uns, im typischen Hotel Chimayo abzusteigen. Ein guter Entscheid, wie es sich bald erweisen wird...      En savoir plus

      Santa Fe - Kunst und Museen

      Es gibt eine Menge Kunst und Geschichte zu sehen und Natalie hat eine Gastkarte für ein paar Museen. Ich schau mir das zeitgenössische Kunstmuseum an, was ich aber für den Preis nicht empfehlen kann, denn die Hälfte der Räume war geschlossen. Aber das Gebäude ist schön.
      Ich besuche die Kathedrale und bewundere zahlreiche Kunstgalerien. Thematisch sind die meisten an die indigene Kultur angelehnt.      En savoir plus

      Da Amarillo a Santa Fe

      Alessandro, Martina e Francesca al risveglio decidono di fare una corsa al parco e hanno la fortuna di vedere l’alba salire su Amarillo, mentre Elisa si risveglia con una seduta di yoga. Alle 8 lasciamo il motel e facciamo la prima tappa al Mid point cafe, che si trova esattamente a metà route tra Chicago e Los Angeles e qui facciamo colazione. Riprendiamo la marcia per qualche ora, attraversiamo il confine e così entriamo in New Messico, dove dobbiamo tirare indietro le lancette di un’ora perché c’è il primo cambio di fuso orario. Il paesaggio comincia a farsi davvero selvaggio e affasciante, caratterizzato prevalentemente da distese semi-desertiche, ma anche da uno skyline con rilievi rocciosi.
      Lungo il percorso c’è un vecchio motel, dove ora le stanze sono aperte e visitabili dai turisti e si possono vedere coloratissimi murales a tema route e vari oggetti di arredamento d’epoca.
      Facciamo la terza sosta alla Blue Hole di Santa Rosa, qui c’è una pozza d’acqua naturale dove si possono fare i tuffi e non ci lasciamo scappare l’occasione per rinfrescarci un po’.
      Proseguiamo in direzione Santa Fe salendo di altitudine. Arriviamo al motel e abbiamo un piccolo inconveniente con la camera, infatti troviamo all’interno degli insetti fastidiosi, dunque chiediamo di cambiarla. Andiamo in centro per cena e con nostra grande gioia è pieno di locali, gente, musica e di vita. Questa città è completamente diversa rispetto a quelle viste finora, non ha nulla di americano ed è più simile ad una città europea con la piazza centrale, la chiesa e i locali. Questa diversità è dovuta alla diversa storia di questi territori rispetto al resto degli USA. Infatti, qui è forte presenza spagnola e messicana, sentiamo molte persone parlare spagnolo, e dalla cultura degli indios, che insieme creano un particolare melting pot tra i colonizzatori e i pueblo (così vengono denominati i nativi).
      Per cena andiamo in un ristorante messicano davvero molto buono, anche se troviamo che il costo di 9,90$ per un margarita sia un po’ eccessivo, forse ciò è dovuto al fatto che la città e soprattutto il centro sono molto turistici.      En savoir plus

      Santa Fe - Canyon Road

      Die Canyon Road in Santa Fe ist recht besonders, denn eine Galerie folgt auf die nächste.
      Ich war schwer von den verschiedenen Skulpturen angetan, aber auch von Windspielen und Kuriositäten.

      Santa Fe is an absolute beautiful city with all the Art you can think of.

      Rasttag in Santa Fe

      Heute hiess es "Beine hängen lassen". Ganz sein lassen konnten wir es trotzdem nicht, die Fahrräder wollten auch mit. So spazierten wir mit vielen anderen Touristen durch die Altstadt. Viele schöne Häuser im Stil der Adobe Hütten säumten die Strassen. Seit 1950 dürfen keine anderen Häuser in der Innenstadt gebaut werden.
      In Santa Fe steht auch die älteste Kirche von ganz Amerika. Leider war sie geschlossen, so besuchten wir halt die Kathedrale, die dem heiligen Franziskus von Assisi geweiht ist. Er bewachte auch unsere Räder, die wir vor der Kirche festgebunden hatten.
      Wir sassen im Park. Beim Eis essen schauten wir den verschiedensten Typen zu. Allzu schnell verging die ruhige Zeit.
      Heute Abend haben wir beim Italiener reserviert, hoffentlich gibts gute Pasta bei ihm, denn morgen wartet wieder eine knackige Etappe auf uns.      En savoir plus

      Santa Fe

      Nous étant arrêtés à côté d'un garage, on en profite pour demander la révision des freins qui commençait maintenant à inquiéter. Malheureusement, il s'est avéré que l'on devait cette fois changer plusieurs pièces sous peine d'un réel risque de défaut lors du freinage. On engage des réparations qui doivent durer toute la journée. La visite de Santa Fe était dans tous les cas au programme. Nous avons pris un bus qui nous emmena jusqu'à la Plaza, au cœur de la ville à taille humaine. Santa Fe nous a marqués d'abord par son architecture d'un autre temps. On se serait cru, en l'absence de voitures, dans une ancienne ville au style arabe. Tous les bâtiments sont construits en adobe qui leur donne de belles couleurs ocre. La ville est réputée, et nous l'avons rapidement remarqué, pour ses nombreuses boutiques d'artisanat, ainsi que ses galeries d'art dans lesquelles nous avons passé un certain temps. Les peintures et les sculptures y étaient variées et magnifiques. À midi on s'est amusé à se chronométrer sur un parcours dans des jeux pour enfants. La ville possède aussi quelques bâtiments historiques dont la plus vieille maison des Etats-Unis et la Croix des Martyrs. En fin de journée on reprend le bus pour récupérer le van mais lorsque vient le moment de payer et alors que le garage allait fermer, on se retrouve entraîné dans quelques péripéties pour payer (retraits et paiements par carte, puis par téléphone et en liquide, suspicion de fraude, appel à l'international...). En remerciant le mécanicien conciliant, on réussit finalement à reprendre la route. Pour profiter de notre matinée le lendemain, on conduit jusqu'à la tombée de la nuit en esquivant quelques animaux sauvages suicidaires.En savoir plus

      Santa Fe

      Die hügelige Fahrt begann schon mit warmen Temperaturen. Dörfer wie San Antonito mit 985 Einwohner oder Golden mit 37 Einwohner und andere folgten. Hier möchte man nicht mal beerdigt sein.
      Nach einem kleinen Pässchen windete sich die Strasse Richtung Madrid hinunter. Diese Dorf war früher Ausgangspunkt für den Kohleabbau.
      Heute ist das Dorf ein Anziehungspunkt für Touristen, Harley Fahrer und zwei Velofahrer aus der Schweiz. Hier gibts viele coole Beizen, Töpfereien und andern Ramsch. Wir haben uns für die Beiz mit Live Musik entschieden. Die Band spielte sauberen Blues. (Vater an der Gitarre und 12 jähriger Sohn am Schlagzeug)
      Auch wurde hier eine Sequenz aus dem Film "Wild Hogs" im Diner Restaurant gedreht.
      Hier in der Umgebung hat es mehrere Waldbrände. Man kann die Rauchschwaden ganz gut sehen.
      Als wir wieder losfuhren, erschlug uns die Hitze fast. Jede Pedalumdrehung auf ein Hügelchen schmerzte. So erreichten wir die Innenstadt von Santa Fe halt etwas später. Heute werden wir uns nicht mehr ins Nachtleben stürzen, sondern früh zu Bette gehen, damit wir dann am morgigen Ruhetag wieder frisch sind.      En savoir plus

      Day 73 - Winter Is Here

      What felt chilly last night was positively cold this morning. With a fresh start to the day we ensured we didn't miss a hot breakfast at the hotel.

      We layered up on clothing and made our way to downtown. We crossed railway tracks on the way in and came across an art market. It was a Saturday and the small market was bustling with what looked like a mix of locals and tourists. Further down the track there was another small market, this time selling local food produce. We grabbed a coffee to stay warm and continued to walk.

      Downtown has the familiar Spanish feel of a town plaza and roads spiralling out from there. The unique adobe architecture, that is a building requirement in Santa Fe, is warm in colour and smooth in nature. Without a right angle in sight, I was reminded of the Gaudi buildings in Barcelona. We snaked in and out of the shops in the area and decided on getting lunch at a cafe. Alice had mac n cheese and I had a chicken burger, both were warmly received. Now that we were full, we embarked on discovering a bit of history.

      The New Mexico History Museum has a few floors covering the history of the state as well as temporary exhibitions on varied topics such as cigar boxes. We were interested in the region and we were both impressed with the displays and information covered throughout. The Native American History of the region is covered with artefacts and personal accounts and the Spanish involvement in the area began around 1610, just three years after the Jamestown settlement began and ten before the Mayflower landed. The most important Spanish building in Santa Fe was the Palace of the Governors which was constructed in 1610. The building is still there and is the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States. As part of the admission to the museum we were also able to walk around the Palace which also had a number of displays and information boards. Back in the museum, other aspects of New Mexico's history were covered including information on the Manhattan Project and the numerous atomic tests that were carried out in the state. It is a revealing and proud museum that is highly recommended. We browsed the gift shops for both the museum and the Palace and then headed home.

      For dinner we went to a local Modern Japanese Restaurant. We both ordered the Teriyaki Chicken that was beautifully presented, although it was basically a grilled chicken breast on top of vegetables with the teriyaki sauce in a small cup next to the plate. That must be the modern twist. It was tasty nonetheless and also a generous serving. We then polished off the jasmine tea and headed home for the evening.
