So we have got as far as Heathrow T5 on our journey down to Hong Kong. Tracy suggested to Ken that we arrive at the airport early so we can enjoy the BA lounge and relax before the flight. Ken fell for this rouse and found himself amongst the most expensive shops in London! Whatever happened to “duty free”!Read more

Hong Kong arrivals.

Ken had to wake Tracy on the plane so she could enjoy breakfast before we landed. Unfortunately Tracy now expects to be woken every morning with a plate of fresh fruit and a full English! Bugger!
We arrived into Hong Kong (which means Fragrant Harbour) when the sun had gone down, so our journey to our hotel was through the incredible skyline of lit sky scrappers. The Mandarin Oriental is beautiful and our suite really lovely. Named after Lord Lichfield the room is full of amazing photographs. We enjoyed a late dinner in one of the hotel’s restaurants and got ourselves ready for the tour tomorrow....Read more

Out on Tour

Today was our first full day here in Hong Kong. We had deliberately kept the morning “free” as we (correctly) assumed jet lag would cut in and we would struggle to get out of bed this morning! The eight hour time difference meant we were tucking into our brekkie whilst everyone else around us were eating their early lunch! This afternoon we had booked a city tour and we set off with Timothy, our lovely guide, and headed up to Victoria Peak, which is a hill at the top of Hong Kong island. It is 552m above sea level and has amazing views across the city and beyond. Unfortunately today was very misty, so you will have to take our word for the amazing views! There is a tram that travels up the hill but why take a tram when you have a car and driver?! Our next stop was out onto the water and to spend some time on a boat around the harbour. We then visited a jewellery factory (where we managed to avoid buying anything! ) and finally a street market by the sea, where we did manage to buy some things!
Dinner tonight was taken in a restaurant 55 floors up and overlooking the water. Good food and good views too!Read more

The Cultural Revolution

Today was our last full day here on our short but fascinating trip to Hong Kong. This morning we decided to stretch our legs and walked a few blocks to visit an exhibition in one of the many financial skyscrapers that are close to out hotel. The exhibition tracked the history of the financial development of Hong Kong from the 1800’s to date. There were a number of very well behaved young, school kids, obviously on their school trip at the exhibition. It is fair to say the school kids probably got more from the displays than Tracy, who spent most of the time looking out the window of the 55th floor at the amazing views!
The afternoon was spent on the open top bus tour......much more to Tracy’s taste! It is always good fun taking these tours, you really do get a quick view of all the interesting things to see in a city.
After the bus tour we headed back to the hotel for a quick change of clothes before heading out for our final dinner.Read more

A farewell to Hong Kong

This morning we bade goodbye to the Mandarin Oriental and indeed to Hong Kong. The hotel was truly luxurious and the staff there so friendly and helpful. We have enjoyed our short stay in Hong Kong but are looking forward to our next adventure. The Philippines here we come! The flight down to Manila is only 90 minutes in the air but the temperatures 12c higher. We are leaving 18c and arriving into 30c. Get out the sunscreen! Hurrah!Read more

Tracy gets a "Thriller in Manila!"

We arrived into Manila yesterday evening and unpacked and had a bite to eat before heading for bed. We had reviewed the potential city trips to be taken here in Manila and made an executive decision to stay at the hotel and enjoy a day around the pool!
After breakfast we went down to the pool area (on the 7th floor!) to enjoy some sunshine. For the first time in our married life Tracy opted for the shady sun bed leaving Ken with the sunny spot. It took Ken a little while to work out the issue. See if you can spot the problem in the 1st photo attached! For those of you struggling to spot the problem please refer to the 2nd photo! Frankly we got the giggles like a couple of school kids! Tracy offered to google and buy Ken the “stallion swimsuit” and Ken agreed to model it, but drew the line at the full body wax that Tracy gleefully explained went with it!
Later we enjoyed dinner on the hotel’s sunset lounge and headed off to bed still chuckling about the Filipino idea of fashion sense.Read more

Pangulasian Island : a taste of heaven!

We said au revoir to Manila this morning and headed off to the Domestic Terminal at the airport and flew about an hour south to El Nido. Here we then got on a speed boat to head out to the Pangulasian Island. What an amazing place! We have a villa right on the beach with a view of the many little islands that are close to us and a perfect view of the sunset. There are only 40 villas here and the place is half full. When we were shown around our villa the guy explained there were a few straw hats we could use and take home. Ken was so excited! After unpacking and trying on all the hats we decided we were hungry and headed out for a late lunch.Read more
