Matatā is a town in the Bay of Plenty in the North Island of New Zealand, 24 kilometres to the north-west of Whakatāne. Much of the town was relocated between the years 2006 and 2021 due to increased natural threats arising from climate change.

Ōpōtiki war memorial, c1986.

The Ōpōtiki War Memorial is a column topped with an elaborate Corinthian order capital based on Nelson's column in London. The coulumn and its base were built at the intersection of Church Street and Elliot Street. This memorial replaced a temporary cenotaph that had been built by returned service man, William Jabez Newell. In 1927 the column was put on rollers and moved to it's current location at the end of Elliot Street at Potts Ave.Lue lisää

In the grounds of the local school stands Te Waha o Rerekohu, one of the largest pōhutukawa trees (Metrosideros excelsa) in New Zealand.

A 22km, mostly unsealed, no-exit road from Te Araroa takes you to the most Easterly point on mainland New Zealand. The historic East Cape lighthouse stands 154 metres above sea level and is accessed by a walking track of some 700 steps - worth it for the views at the top.Lue lisää

Tokomaru Bay's population is predominantly Māori, Tokomaru Bay had a population of 444 at the 2018 New Zealand census

The district was originally known as Toka-a-Namu, which refers to the abundance of sandflies. Over the years the name was altered to Tokomaru Bay.

The seven-kilometre wide bay is small but sheltered, and was a calling place for passenger ships until the early 20th century. Captain Cook spent time here on his 1769 journey of discovery, and later European settlement included a whaling station.

Tolaga Bay had a population of 831 at the 2018 New Zealand census

The region around the bay is rugged and remote, and for many years the only access to the town was by boat. Because the bay is shallow, a long wharf – the second longest in New Zealand (600m) after the Tiwai Point wharf at Bluff (1,500m) – was built in the 1920s to accommodate visiting vessels. The town clock in Gladstone Road is one of Gisborne's most recognisable and identifiable heritage structures. The clock tower was built in 1934.
