    Nikko Temples and Shrines #2

    Below the Toshogu Shrine in a large courtyard was a stable that was adorned with the famous three apes, hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil. Also many beautiful Bonsai were on exhibit all over the Temple grounds. To reach the inner part of Toshogu Temple you had to pass a beautiful gate. Once I made my way inside I went to the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu first. Before the Gate to the Tomb, which is in the forest behind the Temple, there is a famous carving of a sleeping cat, the Nemurineko and to the left and right of the cat, a happy sparrow. The symbolism is that Ieyasu ushered in an age where the powerfull and the weak live in harmony, and the weak are not constantly preyed on by the strong. A long and steep path up the hill later, there, under a pagoda made of a bronze-silver-gold alloy he was interred, the greatest shogun of Japan that ushered in the Edo Period.

    After paying my respects to Tokugawa Ieyasu, I also visited the tomb of his grandson Iemitsu, who was also a great Shogun that stabilized the Shogunate in the years to come, ushering in a period of peace that lasted more than 250 years.
    His Shrine was also very beautiful with a gate that had the four Yaksha as Guardians (Guardians of the East, West, North and South) I bought a golden hamaya arrow and a Yaksha talisman (these temples and Shrines make me a poor man, but I can always earn more money back home, yet I doubt the opportunies to buy these priceless souvenirs will come again)

    Aizuwakamatsu

    I left Nikko to take a local Train to Utsunomiya, then the Shinkansen to Koriyama, and then another local train towards Aizuwakamatsu. A town that is just as much Aizu as it is Wakamatsu :-) It's refreshing to experience a rural town (still more than 100000 inhabitants) It's a Samurai Town that was an important place in the Tohoku Region, and it saw many clans as overseeers. I checked into my hotel around 13:00 and then went out to visit the castle. I spent the remainder of the afternoon enjoying the castle grounds and a nice hot matcha green tea at the castle tea house.

    An Aizu Afternoon

    After a pretty good breakfast, RouteINN Hotels definitely have a great selection, I walked back to the station and bought a day pass for the Akabeko Bus, Akabeko, or Red Cow, was originally a Toy for Children, basically a red painted cow with a bobble head. It was also a good luck charm against illnesses affecting children, especially against the pox. For some reason the toy seemed to be effective and gave rise to the superstition. My take is that maybe the children of the past had contact to real cows and contracted the cow smallpox, which is a lot less dangerous, but makes you very resistant to the more deadly human pox as well. That's basically how the first vaccination was discovered, cow (vache) is in the name. Anyway, it's a cute mascot of the Aizu area. I bought a few little Akabeko souvenirs and spent the rest of the day seeing some interesting sights of the Town. Among them a hexagonal temple called Sazae temple which had a spiraling staircase, one up and one down and those going up never met the ones coming down. It was interesting. I also spent a long time at Oyakuen, an old herb garden and scenic place where I relaxed, wrote postcards and fed ducks and koi carps.

    Transit towards Tsuruoka

    Not much to say about today, I left my Hotel in Aizuwakamatsu early and spent the majority of the day in transit, while the train rides were pretty enjoyable, I had to wait for more than an hour in between the trains, it took me three trains and one bus to get to my Ryokan near Dewa Sanzan, I arrived past 6 and my kaiseki dinner which was super tasty and filling, was already waiting for me. I took a bath afterwards and then went to my room where I went to bed early (a surprisingly comfortable futon, much better than in the Korean Hanok) breakfast is served at an early time, so I have to force myself to not stay up too late like usual :-)

    The 2446 Steps to Haguro-San

    After an early start (I slept astonishingly well on the Futon), I enjoyed the fantastic breakfast that the Ryokan offered, so many small dishes and different tastes, it was amazing but also a bit too much for one person. Obviously I didn't want to waste anything and ate it all. Afterwards I went to the Gate of Mount Haguro that was just around the corner and started my ascend over 2446 steps to the mountain. If you can call 414m a mountain. Haguro-san together with the other two, Gas-san and Yudono-san form the Dewa-Sanzan, the three mountains of Dewa, ancient name of the region. I had a mentally refreshing stroll through the forest, on a path lined with old and majestic cedar trees. Countless shrines greeted me on my path to the Dewa Sanzan Shrine on top of Haguro-san.

    A Lazy Day in Tsuruoka

    The Day began and ended with delicious food, a vegetarian pilgrim's diet, most of it I could barely identify, but I always cleared my plate and it was a great experience. I decided to visit Tsuruoka a bit more thoroughly because most of the other interesting locations were hard to reach by bus, considering that I had to get back to my Temple Stay as well. Anyway, just Tsuruoka offered enough interesting sights, I visited a cool little temple in town where I bought my first little Kitsune figure, witnessed a wedding between a Japanese woman and a gaijin that might have been a German, got some smiles from girls in the park and had a nice long chat with an employee of the local Tourist Agency... The Japanese Passport is one of the most valuable passports in the world, how many japanese own a passport, what would you think? It's only about 20%... And the reason is obvious, there is so much inland tourism, there is no need to leave the country... Every region and city tries hard to get the attention of japanese tourists (yes, japanese, I rarely see brochures that are not japanese only up here) one way to get attention is by advertising special regional food, and the best advertisement is delivered through tv shows, lots of shows feature traveling the country and enjoying the regional food.     After a final very tasty and very early breakfast I said goodbye to Templestay Kanbayashi Katsukane and took the limited express train from Tsuruoka to Akita, where I left my luggage at the hotel and then spontaneously decided to visit the village of Kakunodate, a 45 minute ride with the Akita Shinkansen. I spent the afternoon there and returned after dark for a few more pictures of nighttime Akita.

    Kakunodate, a Samurai Village

    Kakunodate, once a famed village of Samurais, also had a castle once upon a time. It still boasts many beautiful samurai town houses, that create an atmosphere that draws tourists from all around. I enjoyed my time here, even though it was a rainy day with grey heavy clouds hiding the sunlight, the colors of the leaves were radiant nonetheless. I collected a few stamps again and strolled down the streets. Many Rickshaws could be seen and the drivers were looking for people to use their services. A delivery man that I saw running at several locations during my walk impressed me with his work ethics. I stayed till nightfall and then took the Shinkansen back to Akita.

    I continued my journey to Aomori, where I arrived at my Hotel around 3 PM, then I used the remainder of the Day to walk towards the Ocean and visit the ASPAM, the Aomori Prefecture Information Center which is a Landmark that you can't miss as it looks like a flat pyramid. On the ground level were several souvenir stores and the other levels had various city bureaus. 13F had a cool observation deck, and from there I had a great overview of the city and towards the ocean. Hokkaido however was still too far away to be seen. I waited till sundown to enjoy the colors and witnessed a fire on the roof of one of the buildings, they extinguished it efficiently thank goodnes. The rest of the day after dusk, I enjoyed in my hotel room, that feels like a mini suite with enough space to feature a small couch and also a more spacious than usual bathroom. Love it.

    A pointless Roundtrip to Hokkaido ;-)

    Another Transit day, that I spent with the possibly pointless trip from Aomori to Shin-Hakodate Hokuto Station. And then about an hour later, I returned south and onwards to Hachinohe, where my Hotel for the night was located. I only did this so I could faithfully claim, that I have visited all the main islands of Japan. Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu AND HOKKAIDO :-) En route to my destination, the Shinkansen traverses the impressive Seikan Tunnel that passes under the sea and has a length of almost 54km. About halfway through the Shinkansen stopped because of a power outage, though the lights didn't go out... It would have been an interesting experience to be left in total darkness in a tunnel under the sea. The pointless little round trip would have nearly cost me 200€ without my JR Pass. Naturally not too much to see today, It was a rather cloudy day with less than ideal lighting. I am glad that these "Every Night a different Hotel" -Routine, will be over soon, and with the exception of 2 stays later on, I will have at least 2 nights per Hotel, and also some multi-stays up to a week. It's much more enjoyable if I can leave my rather heavy backpacks at my hotel and don't have to carry the 25kg+ for up to 3km each and every day. Tomorrow I will travel to Morioka and afterwards to Sendai, where I hope to see Matsushima on a sunny day. Then it's an Intense week in central Tokyo again, days I will spend in the neon light of Akihabara, Shibuya, Harajuku, Roppongi and so on, going fully 🤓 geek. Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu UND HOKKAIDO :-) Auf dem Weg zu meinem Ziel durchquert der Shinkansen den beeindruckenden Seikan-Tunnel, der unter dem Meer verläuft und eine Länge von fast 54 km hat. Ungefähr auf halber Strecke hielt der Shinkansen wegen eines Stromausfalls an, obwohl die Lichter nicht ausgingen ... Es wäre eine interessante Erfahrung gewesen, in einem Tunnel unter dem Meer in völliger Dunkelheit zurückgelassen zu werden. Die sinnlose kleine Hin- und Rückfahrt hätte mich ohne meinen JR-Pass fast 200€ gekostet. Natürlich gibt es heute nicht viel zu sehen, es war ein ziemlich bewölkter Tag mit nicht idealer Beleuchtung. Ich bin froh, dass diese „Jede Nacht ein anderes Hotel“-Routine bald vorbei ist und ich bis auf 2 spätere Aufenthalte mindestens 2 Nächte pro Hotel haben werde, und auch einige Mehraufenthalte bis zu einer Woche. Es macht viel mehr Spaß, wenn ich meine recht schweren Rucksäcke im Hotel lassen kann und nicht jeden Tag die über 25 kg bis zu 3 km schleppen muss. Morgen reise ich nach Morioka und anschließend nach Sendai, wo ich hoffe, an einem sonnigen Tag Matsushima zu sehen. Dann ist es wieder eine intensive Woche im Zentrum von Tokio, Tage, die ich im Neonlicht von Akihabara, Shibuya, Harajuku, Roppongi und so weiter verbringen werde und dabei voll 🤓 Geek bin. Aber zurück in die Gegenwart: Hachinohe scheint eine lebhafte Stadt zu sein. Da ich erst nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit ankam, konnte ich nur einen Teil des nächtlichen Straßenlebens erleben. Ich sah viele Kundenanwerber auf der Straße, die versuchten, Passanten in die Bars und Izakayas zu locken. Ich holte mir mein Abendessen bei Lawson's, einem Konbini (Supermarkt), der im Norden sehr verbreitet ist. Den Rest des Tages verbrachte ich in meinem gemütlichen Zimmer.     When I left my Hotel in Hachinohe after breakfast I checked Google maps for the direction in which to walk, and attracted the attention of a friendly older gentleman who Insisted in walking me all the 1.5km to the station because he thought I was lost :-) on the road he showed me that he was playing Pokemon Go, so I guess the walk was not totally pointless for him :-D. He even went all out to help me at the station with getting a ticket and so on :-) Finally, all my new friend accepted as his thanks was a picture with both of us in it, that another man took :-) japanese hospitality knows no bounds hehe. Transition to Morioka worked flawlessly and when I arrived I actually managed to find a bus that brought me very close to my hotel, Wow, I think I already loved the city at that point. Weather was not so great, a constant dribble of rain for most of the daylight hours, but I enthusiastically explored the city anyway. I visited the grounds of the castle ruins and nearby sakurayama shrine, where I watched temple cats communicating with the gods, or just ringing the bells for food? The area had some scenic views and beautiful fall colors. I also visited the Morioka History and Culture Centre, that I liked a lot, because it offered an English audio guide online that was very interesting and informative. It had peak design and a beautiful lounge area that offered a stunning view on the shrine.

Das Wetter war nicht so toll, die meiste Zeit des Tages regnete es ständig, aber ich erkundete die Stadt trotzdem voller Begeisterung. Ich besuchte das Gelände der Burgruinen und den nahegelegenen Sakurayama-Schrein, wo ich Tempelkatzen dabei zusah, wie sie mit den Göttern kommunizierten oder einfach nur die Glocken läuteten, um Futter zu bestellen? Die Gegend bot einige malerische Ausblicke und wunderschöne Herbstfarben. Ich habe auch das Morioka History and Culture Center besucht, das mir sehr gut gefallen hat, weil es online einen englischen Audioguide angeboten hat, der sehr interessant und informativ war.     During my hearty breakfast, I had a friendly and inspiring chat with the breakfast waitress, she explained some of the local specialties to me, which they offered at breakfast, ramen and soba primarily with a regional touch, and she recommended me to visit Mitsuishi, three sacred stones with a legendary demon hand imprint. I spontaneously decided to do a morning walk to said stones. En route I passed a famous cherry tree that is growing out of a solid rock and snapped some pictures. Once I got to the sacred stones, I searched for the demon hand, but I could not make out the exact location. The stones were not advertised a lot, considering it's such a legendary place for the whole Prefecture Iwate, Iwate literally means Rock Hand. The Story behind the Demon Hand can be read in one of the pictures. Afterwards, I returned to my Hotel, grabbed my luggage and took the Shinkansen to Sendai, where again, I left my Luggage at the Hotel and ventured out right away, to make the best of the sunny weather. Matsushima Bay was my target, one of the three great scenic spots of ancient japan.

Gesagt getan, ich machte noch einen Morgenspaziergang in Morioka, vorbei an einem sehr bekannten Kirschbaum, der mitten aus einem Felsen wuchs, hin zu den berühmten Mitsuishi, die dafür, dass sie im Grunde ein für die gesamte Präfektur Iwate legendäres Monument waren, sehr unspektakulär beworben wurde. Iwate selbst bedeutet nämlich Felshand. Den Abdruck konnte ich zwar nicht erkennen, aber immerhin einen neuen Stempel sammeln. Nach dem kleinen Ausflug schnappte ich mein Gepäck am Hotel und nahm den nächsten Shinkansen nach Sendai. Dort lagerte ich wieder mein Gepäck beim Hotel ein und machte mich auf den Weg um mit dem Zug ins Nahe gelegene Matsushima zu reisen, denn das Wetter war Sonnig und ideal für einen Ausflug ans Wasser.     Matsushima, one of the three great scenic spots of Japan was my primary target of the day, originally I wanted to go a day later, but the sunshine changed my plans, and I took a local train from the nearby station to reach it after around 40 minutes. Right out of the station I purchased a ticket for a roundtrip boat ride into the bay of Matsushima. The sun was dazzling, the boat trip was very relaxing and many of the islands and special rock formations were explained in detail. After the 50min cruise, sun was almost ready to set, and I spent the remainder of daylight to visit some of the shore attached islands with shrines on it. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing and I enjoyed having the island to myself.

I spent a large part of the day sorting my luggage and washing my clothes. I also started filling a big 📦 ,that I bought at a nearby Postoffice. I chose the largest they had with the intention of unearthing some treasures in Akihabara. I hope this is the last one I have to send home, I also plan to send some of my luggage home that Will probably not be used to make space in may backpack that I can fill with the souvenirs from the rest of my journey. The only other excursion I managed in between was a visit to the Meiji Shrine, where the beloved emperor Meiji and his consort lie interred. Since some of the most beautiful shrines will wait for me in Kyoto, the only other place I intend to visit in Tokyo is Asakusa Shrine (Senso-ji)

    Today, I visited Skytree City, a huge shopping and entertainment area with the landmark broadcasting tower "Tokyo Skytree" at its center. The 634m high Tokyo Skytree (highest free standing tower in the world) can be seen from many areas in the city, there are two observatories, a large one with an exclusive cafe and restaurant at 350m and a gallery at 450m.     Farewell to Tokyo 🗼🗼🗼

    Today was my final night in Tokyo, I spent the day visiting the Mori Modern Art Museum inside the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, an exhibition that you should definitely visit if you want to augment a depression :-D not because it was bad, it was in fact very good and interesting, but because of the dark and melancholic themes of the exhibits. I can imagine japanese wanting to jump of buildings after visiting the exhibition for too long, that might be the reason why they did not offer a combination ticket with the sky terrace on the same floor. I could not take fotos or film inside, but even if I could, I would not have shown you the cursed exhibitions :-D. Afterwards I went to Tokyo Tower 🗼 a famous landmark since the fifties, where I spent the rest of the day enjoying the surroundings and the tower itself. Tomorrow, my second 21 day JR Pass becomes valid, and I will use it to travel to Nagoya, to visit the castle and hopefully see Mt. Fuji along the way. Then I will track back diagonally with a limited express to go to Nagano, where I will spend about three nights in a more rural and scenic setting. In the coming days, I will travel the Hokuriko Arch towards the Kansai Region to visit the Must See locations of every Japan Journey: Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe and so on.

Morgen wird mein zweiter 21-Tage-JR-Pass gültig und ich werde damit nach Nagoya reisen, die Burg besichtigen und unterwegs hoffentlich den Berg Fuji sehen. Dann werde ich mit einem begrenzten Express diagonal zurück nach Nagano fahren, wo ich etwa drei Nächte in einer ländlicheren und ruhigeren Umgebung verbringen werde.     From Nagoya to Nagano

    My Journey took me to Nagoya, all the way down to the south, my intention was to visit Nagoya Castle, which I did. I left all my luggage in a coin locker at the Trainstation and then walked around 2.5km to the Castlegrounds. Even though I could not visit the main keep, as it's undergoing inspection and reinforcement to make it more earthquake proof, I had a nice afternoon in the castle courtyard. After I was satisfied, I walked back to the Trainstation to take a limited express train called Shinano up towards the Northeast to reach Nagano, my destination for the next few nights.

    Changing Plans in Nagano

    After a good night's sleep and an even better breakfast, I planned to visit the jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, the exact same park from the famous "monkeys chilling in a hot spring" documentaries you all know.     My plans where quicky ruined though when I stepped out of the hotel, then made a 180 back in, to grab my ☔ (also profusely apologized to staff for having to retrieve my backpack) Of course It had to be raining, and from reviews, I knew that the 40mins path from the final bus stop to the park could get very muddy in the rain. Visualizing myself slipping in the mud with my precious downjacket, I decided to forfeit my plans and do something else in the city instead.

    First thing that came up on Google was (Shinshū) Zenkō-ji, a beautiful Temple in the heart of Nagano, national treasure and one of the most important temples of Japan... Lucky me. Of course, I went there and had a great morning to early afternoon. I was also super lucky and honored to take part in a ceremonial prayer where they lifted a curtain to a beautiful golden Buddha statue for just a few seconds. Afterwards I followed a path that went under the altar and to a little pilgrimage in pitchblack darkness. Only using my right hand to navigate around the walls, with the aim of finding a metal bar, representing the key to paradise just below the statue. It was a representation of the darkness after death and being reborn with the returning light of the exit. The friendly monk, who could speak some german announced to me that now I was reborn. Strangely I did feel refreshed after the sensation of going through the complete darkness and as I left the temple, the Sun was out and greeting me warmly. I also visited a museum and moved a heavy hexagonal rotating cabinet with all the sutras of Buddhism enshrined within, and according to legend, that's giving me the same enlightenment as reading them all. To be fair, it was almost too hard to rotate it by yourself, another little wisdom, that knowledge is gained easier if people work together. Leaving the temple I collected my backpacks at the hotel and took the bus, up into the mountains of Nagano, up to Togakushi and a little beyond, where I would relax in a Ryokan and enjoy the serene beauty of the mountains for two blissful nights.

Als ich mir dann innerlich vorstellte, wie ich mit meiner schönen Daunenjacke im Schlamm ausrutsche, beschloss ich, meine Pläne aufzugeben und stattdessen etwas anderes in der Stadt zu unternehmen.

    Das erste, was in der Google-Suche auftauchte, war (Shinshū) Zenkō-ji, ein wunderschöner Tempel im Herzen von Nagano. Nationalschatz und einer der wichtigsten Tempel Japans ... Ich hatte mal wieder Glück. Natürlich bin ich dorthin gegangen und hatte einen tollen Morgen und frühen Nachmittag. Ich hatte zudem die Ehre an einem zeremoniellen Gebet teilnehmen zu dürfen, bei dem für ein paar Sekunden der Vorhang vor einer wunderschönen goldenen Buddha-Statue gehoben wurde. Ein freundlicher Mönch sagte wir hätten großes Glück genau jetzt dort zu sein. Danach ging ich auf einen Pfad der mich unter den Altar führte, dort musste ich eine kleine Pilgerreise in pechschwarzer Dunkelheit unternehmen, wobei ich nur mit der rechten Hand um die Wände navigieren konnte, dies symbolisierte die Dunkelheit nach dem Tod. Ziel im Dunkeln war das berühren einer Metallstange, auf der Unterseite der Statue darüber, Stellvertretend für den Schlüssel zum Paradies. Die abschließende Rückkehr ins Licht war dann die Wiedergeburt, und der freundliche Mönch, der etwas Deutsch sprechen konnte, bestätigte, dass ich nun wiedergeboren wurde. Seltsamerweise fühlte ich mich tatsächlich erfrischt nach dem schärfen der eigenen Sinne beim durch die Dunkelheit tasten. Danach habe ich ein Museum besucht und in einem Scriptorium einen schweren sechseckigen Drehschrank im Kreis gedreht. In diesem werden alle Sutras des Buddhismus aufbewahrt, und der Legende nach verschafft mir eine Rotation des Schrankes, die gleiche Erleuchtung, als hätte ich sie alle gelesen. Als ich die große Anlage verließ, holte ich meine Rucksäcke in meinem Hotel ab und nahm den Bus hinauf in die Berge von Nagano, bis nach Togakushi und etwas darüber hinaus, wo ich in einem Ryokan entspannen und zwei glückselige Nächte lang die ruhige Schönheit der Berge genießen werde.
