Just got off the plane for refuelling in Kuala Lumpur. It was a long 11 hours of watching movies, no sleep. We get back on shortly for another 8.5 hours. We’ll definitely be trying to get some shut eye on this leg. Looking forward to seeing Tayla at the airport.Läs mer

    I går, Turkiet ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Had our last breakfast in Istanbul and have packed up ready to get the Metro to the airport. Our flight is at 3.50pm, and we’ll land in Sydney 7.20pm on Sunday night. Tayla will be waiting for us to take us home. We can’t wait to sleep in our own bed tomorrow night. The beds and showers have all been fantastic, surprisingly. But there’s nothing like your own bed and pillow, and our bed will even be better because it comes complete with a big furry lump, Diego. 😻Läs mer

  • Istanbul, Turkey

    29 maj–1 juni, Turkiet ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Today we headed across to the other side of the harbour where a lot of the monuments and Mosques are. Because of Eid al-Adha (3 day Turkish celebration ), we knew the Grand Bazaar was closed. We walked down to the tram and hopped on to head over to the Basillica Cistern. When we arrived, there was a huge line. I’d purchased a skip-the-line ticket, so I asked Peter to wait in line while I walked around the block to the entrance to see if there was a shorter line - there wasn’t. 😂 A tour guide approached me asking if I wanted a guide and if I had a ticket already. I explained I was just there to see if there was a shorter, skip-the-line ticket line. He said, this is it. I went to walk back to Peter when he said, come with me! I told him, no, I’m fine thank you, as usually in tourist areas if someone helps you there’s strings attached or a cost involved. He assured me it wouldn’t cost me anything in return. I followed him to the front of the line. There was another line going in the opposite direction with only 4 people in it. He told me to walk directly to the lady with the high vis vest and give her my ticket to scan, and just walk in. Don’t talk to or look at anyone else! I was freaking out but did just as he said, and walked straight in!! 😱😂 I called Peter to let him know to wait for me on the other side. He was also shocked! This place was amazing and so unusual. I walked down the stairs and into, what seemed like, another world. Hundreds of tall pillars sitting in a pool of water. It was dark, damp and musty, but this set the mood. The photos really don’t do it justice. There were very few people inside, as it had only just opened for the day, maybe a hundred at best? I wandered along the boardwalks lost in my surroundings, before heading back up to tell Peter all about it. We then spent about an hour walking through the maze of stalls around the Grand Bazaar and also the beautiful Blue Mosque before walking back across the bridge. We spotted a nice restaurant we wanted to come back to for dinner with an incredible view of the Blue Mosque. We got back to our room and rested for a while before getting ready for dinner. The view of the Mosque all lit up, reflecting on the water was gorgeous. And there was even a massive fireworks display to top our last night off. I’m sure they put them on in our honour. 😂😂 I’m sure it had nothing to do with the Turkish holiday today? 😉 Our very last night on our 65 day holiday. I’m glad I’ve been using this app, there are so many highlights and moments I’d forget if I couldn’t go back through and relive them. Thanks for coming on this journey with us. I hope you enjoyed some of our photos and stories. I know we enjoyed sharing them with you. Not looking forward to tomorrow’s 21 hour direct flight, but we’re definitely looking forward to being home. 🏠 🙏Läs mer

  • Cappadocia to Istanbul, Turkey

    27 maj, Turkiet ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Peter and I checked out of our hotel and drove to several different places. We walked through fairy chimneys in lots of different locations. Around lunchtime, we started to slowly make our way towards the airport. We dropped off our hire car and waited to board our plane. This flight had a better landing. 😂 Rode the Metro to our hotel in Istanbul. It was very lavish and ornate and very central, and only a 1 minute walk from the Metro station. It was time for dinner so we walked up strong the corner to a restaurant and had a delicious dinner. Peter found his favourite beer here too, Desperato. 🍺We’ve decided to do some shopping tomorrow, with a bit of sight seeing.Läs mer

  • Cappadocia, Turkey

    26 maj, Turkiet ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Up bright and early this morning for my hot air balloon flight. Got picked up at 3.45am and stopped at a few other hotels along the way until we reached the area for our quick briefing. We jumped in a bus and headed out to the balloons. What a sight! Hundreds of balloons being inflated, some just lifting off. It was still pretty dark, so the glow of the flames inside each balloon against the night sky was amazing and beautiful. We climbed in the basket, ours only held 16. A lot of others held 36 people. They were designed really well as there are only 4 people in each section so we all had plenty of room to move around. We went up to about 800 feet for a while before dropping down lower over the fairy chimneys and Love Valley for a closer birds eye view. Then up to 1000ft for a while. It was so peaceful watching the sunrise and seeing 203 other balloons floating above and below us, all at the mercy and guidance of the wind. Our pilot nailed the landing. We actually landed on the back of a trailer, basically the same size as our basket! 😱 Then we drove to an area that had a clean paddock for the balloon to deflate. It was weird driving around in the basket on the back of a ute with the balloon still fully inflated above us. We had champagne and some cakes, got a certificate and a medal 🥇 before heading back to our hotels. Peter was still sound asleep as it was only 7am. We had breakfast included in our hotel. There gave us some grape molasses to try which they made from their own garden, with some Turkish bread. It was delicious. We enjoyed it every morning with our buffet style breakfast. We drove to Uchisar, Love Valley and heaps of other spots. Tonight we went to a cave restaurant in Uchisar for a Turkish night of eating, drinking, whirling dervish dancing, a fire pit and belly dancing. A horse even came in to the restaurant for part of the show! The dancing told a story about the courting process, and how the woman picks her man etc. He must be a good dancer and clean shaven. 😂 Got back home around 11.30pm. It was a very long day for me.Läs mer

  • Athens to Cappadocia, Turkey

    25 maj, Turkiet ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Just a short 5 minute walk to the subway to get a train to the airport. We flew Turkish Airlines to Istanbul, then changed to a regional plane to Nevsehir airport. We were coming in to land, hit the tarmac for a few seconds, then the pilot gunned it and took off again. Not something that has ever happened to either of us in all the flights we’ve ever been on. We were all wondering what on earth is going on? The guy next to me pulled out the safety information card and started reading it. 😂😂 The pilot came across the intercom saying there was an animal on the runway and it wasn’t safe to land. I call BS. He would have seen the animal from miles away. Why would he touch down then take straight off again?? I reckon it was a pilot in training and he overshot the landing? We climbed quite high and flew around for about another 20 minutes before heading back to the runway. I honestly thought it was going to happen again. We were flying over the end of the runway for quite a few seconds before touching down. I didn’t think we’d have enough room to stop, but he braked A LOT heavier than normal to stop in time. The man next to me said a little prayer. 🙏 Everyone on the plane cheered and clapped when we landed. 😂After picking up our hire car we drove through the countryside to Cappadocia. Our room was partly inside a cave, like a lot of other hotels here. We dropped our bags and went for a walk into town. It was a lot bigger than I expected, and not crowded at all because it was later in the afternoon. We found a nice restaurant for dinner, then made our way back to our room to relax. I had a balloon flight booked early in the morning so I needed my beauty sleep. 💤Läs mer

  • Athens, Greece

    24 maj, Grekland ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We had an early buffet breakfast this morning before disembarking in Athens. I’d organised a driver to take us to our apartment in the city. We arrived around 9am and couldn’t check in yet but were able to leave it suitcases and backpacks there which was great because that left us free to do whatever we wanted until we could check in. We walked up to the Acropolis and were told the next time slot available was 10.45am so we booked in to go back at 7pm. We walked up a hill made of very slippery stone. There were stairs to our left but I decided to go straight up where I was. Peter made a smart arse comment saying” I’d take the stairs if I were you“. Meaning I’d probably slip over. He’d no sooner finished that sentence when I heard a scuffle and splat behind me, then him laughing. Peter slipped and fell. As soon as I turned around I said, THAT is karma!! 😂 I’m sure people were judging me because I was laughing at him and not checking he was ok. He was fine. We walked back down into town and wandered through streets of flea markets (didn’t see a single flea), shops, markets and ancient ruins scattered amongst each other. We rested our feet for a bit before heading back up the steep hill that Acropolis sits on. It was a great time to go as we were in in just over 5 minutes, compared to the long line that was there earlier in the day. We spent about an hour up there and were headed back down to grab some dinner when it was my turn. I fell down some stairs made of the same slippery stone that brought Peter down. It bloody hurt. 😢 I hobbled down to town and we found a nice restaurant for dinner. After dinner we headed back to our apartment, which was right in the middle of everything and also had a spectacular view of Acropolis from the balcony. 👌Läs mer

  • Greece - Santorini

    23 maj, Grekland ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

We booked a tour through the ship for today. We meet at the theatre at 7.30am then got ushered to the tender to get to the port. It was only a short 5 minute trip by boat. We met up with the tour operator and jumped on the bus headed for Oia (pronounced ‘eeya’). It started sprinkling on the way up. We, (and many others), hadn’t packed any wet weather gear. 😩 by the time we got to the top and listened to our guide’s information, we were already damp. We continued on our own, lining up for the “iconic” blue dome photo. We’d been waiting about 20 minutes when an Asian couple (about our age) turned up from nowhere and were trying to cut in front of us. I said, ‘there’s a line’. They kept saying they didn’t want photo, just going through’. I didn’t believe them because they were standing there talking amongst themselves for a few minutes before this, like they were hatching a plan. We all kept insisting they line up like everyone else. We all eventually caved and let them through. You can imagine our surprise when about 10 minutes later we got to the ‘spot’ and there they were, standing there looking around and taking photos!! There was no access to anywhere from there. I was livid! 🤬 I said, “Oh, why are you here? You said you were going through? So go through. It looks like you’re taking photos to me, no? So you lied just to push in?? That’s so rude! You are very rude people!!We’ve all been standing in the rain for half an hour and you just come along, and push past everyone?!” The hide of them. It wouldn’t have bothered me as much if we weren’t wet and cold and been waiting so long already. Anyway, we got our photos and kept walking along the top enjoying the view. There’s an old castle ruin, some old windmills, lots of accommodation, bars, restaurants and shops. It was time to get on the bus to the next stop, Fira. This is where we had lunch and a Greek experience with dancing and plate breaking. It actually felt amazing. 😱 Maybe I was getting my earlier frustrations out? 😂😂 We were up at the highest point in Oia, and blanketed in by fog. We couldn’t see a thing from the restaurant windows. We then headed to the area where the cable cars take you down to the port. Luckily there wasn’t a line up and we got straight on. I spotted some donkeys on our way down and wanted to see them. Peter lined up for the tender while I patted, kissed and snuggled ALL the donkeys 🫏 until it was time to leave. It was great to get back, get our damp clothes off, and have a long hot shower. 🚿 😁Läs mer

  • Greece - Mykonos

    22 maj, Grekland ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

The ship sailed into the port, so no tender needed for today. We disembarked at and 1pm and saw there were a heap of free shuttle buses to town. This is really the first island that felt like Greece to us. It had the white buildings climbing the steep hillside, bright coloured windows and doors (usually blue), and lots of brightly coloured Bougainvillea clinging to houses, restaurants and bars. We wandered through the white cobblestones narrow alleyways lined with shops, bars and cafes. We headed back to the ship after a couple of hours. I wanted to go back later by myself so I could wander aimlessly, taking photos and climbing high up the hillside to get a good vantage point. I headed out again at 6pm and did just that. Got back to the ship at 8pm then went to dinner with Peter. Just laying in bed now trying to cull my photos down to just 25. 😂Läs mer

  • Greece - Katakolon

The ship docked right in town so it was a short stroll to see the town centre. We decided against going to Olympia to see where the original Olympics were held. It was of no interest to either of us. We had a cruisy day walking through town, looking in some of the shops and then headed back to the ship for lunch. We had the buffet for lunch. I forgot how good a buffet is. So much to pick from, and what we ate was delicious. Topped off with some desserts. 🤭 I played a word game in the Atrium AND WON!! 🏆 No prize, but he says I could keep my pencil 😂😂.Läs mer

  • Greece - Corfu

    20 maj, Grekland ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We arrived in Corfu and wanted to hire Vespas. Unfortunately we couldn’t hire them in Europe as we don’t have an Australian motorcycle licence. Plan B, we hired a car for the day for 35€. Great alternative as we had aircon in the car. We drove to a popular town called Palaiokastritsa. It was beautiful. The water was so brilliant in colour it was hard to look at. It looked like it was lit up from underneath. We then drove up to a monastery on top of the hill. I went for a bit of a trek to get some photos while Peter waited in the shade. From there I kept adding beaches in the GPS and we went on a bit of a beach crawl. I had a towel and my swimmers on but didn’t go in the water. It’s still a bit fresh for me. Maybe I’ll brave it on Mykonos or Santorini? We stopped at a seaside town and shared a pork Gyros, it was bloody delicious. I’ll be trying to replicate that when we get home. 😂 A few more stops along the way to take in the scenery, then headed to check out the old town in Corfu. Another lovely very old area with tiny alleyways loaded with shops. Lots of linen and trinkets, and of course souvenirs. We dropped the car back and headed to the ship. We sat on the deck next to the pool and did Sudoku and crosswords together while having a drink or two.Läs mer

  • Montenegro - Kotor

    19 maj, Montenegro ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

LOVED Montenegro! ❤️ We booked a tour to go on today. We had to go by tender to the mainland. Kotor was nestled in between the port and tall rugged mountains. The water was so still it was like a fjord. 27kms in from the ocean, which is why it’s so calm and mirror like. Just stunning. We hopped on a coach and went to Budva. It’s a seaside town that gets very busy in Summer. It still has the walls protecting it and of course many old churches and alleyways in the old part of the town. Right beside it is the modern part which we didn’t visit. We had free time to wander around. From here we went high up into the mountains to Cetinje and were treated to a plate of local prosciutto, cheeses and olives. And some dough balls. All locally produced in that area only. We were then taken to the very top of the rugged mountain range to get a cable car back down. The fog was rolling in so we knew we wouldn’t see much until we were further down. Peter was very happy about this as he hates heights. We got in the cable car and couldn’t see a thing. 😂 It goes quite fast and it’s an 11 minute ride down, so that gives you an idea of how far up we were. All of a sudden the fog was behind us and we had a spectacular view of Kotor. Wow! We got the bus back to Kotor and continued on with our tour. When we were done we headed back to join the huge queue to get on a tender back to the ship. We had a great day today. I fell in love with everything about Montenegro. I could live there. 💙Läs mer

After yesterday’s fiasco, we just wanted a day to relax and go at our own pace. We roamed aimlessly through little alleyways and shops before heading back to the ship in the afternoon. We enjoyed a delicious dinner in one of the restaurants, then sat in the atrium watching others play trivia and cheat on their phones. 😂Läs mer

  • Venice to Norwegian Cruise

    17 maj, Montenegro ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Checked out of our accommodation and got a ferry to Piazza Roma to get on the people mover to the port in Venice to get on our cruise - Norwegian Pearl. Unfortunately for us the ship was leaving from Ravenna. Thinking it must be further down the port, or a short shuttle bus away, I put it into Google maps and was horrified to see it was 2hrs 20mins DRIVE, over 3 hours by train!!! I felt the blood drain away from my body. I couldn’t see how we could make it in time. We had to board by 3pm. It was now 12.30pm. Peter was looking to see if there were any hire car options and I was frantically looking at fast trains. Nothing coming up for either. I felt sick 🤢. We were looking forward to relaxing and unpacking for 7 nights, now we’re thinking we’ll have to see if we can fly to Croatia and meet the ship there tomorrow. Neither of us can make phone calls, we have an eSIM for data only. So I couldn’t call Norwegian to talk to anyone. Everything I was reading was telling me it’s end to end sailing and you’re not permitted to meet at a later port, nor can anyone leave the ship earlier. It seemed hopeless. I was looking at hiring a private driver but I couldn’t book anything for today, only tomorrow. For someone who is VERY organised, this was a massive kick in the guts. It was ultimately my fault, it said VENICE (Ravenna). I read Venice and Googled the port in VENICE!! Seeing (Ravenna) after a capital VENICE to me meant it was an area/suburb in Venice. I didn’t think to look into it any further, I knew where the cruise terminal in Venice was, so that’s where we went. Apparently Norwegian doesn’t sail from there any more. MSC cruise ships do though. I finally got through to a real person on their chat/helpline, after originally being told there is no one available and to leave my email address and someone would get back to me within 24 hours!! By this stage it’s nearly 1.30pm, I’m nearly in tears and begging her to let us join the ship tomorrow in Zardar Croatia. She said she has to get approval from the captain, as it’s not normally allowed. I waited for what seemed like an eternity. She then asked if it was possible to get a taxi there, telling me it’s just over 2 hours away. Waze was telling me it’s 2 hours 20 mins which wouldn’t get us there until 4pm, if we don’t get any traffic! She has spoken to the captain and he had given us approval to board at 4pm, no later as the ship sails at 5pm. It was our only chance. I knew the taxi would cost an arm and a leg IF we could even get one. And there was a chance we wouldn’t make it by 4pm and it would all be for nothing. We started running towards a taxi stand asking whoever would listen - RAVENNA, Ravenna!! They were looking at me like I had two heads. Then they start throwing prices at us. One way was faster but a lot longer and way more expensive. The other way was shorter and more traffic but took longer and would be the cheapest option. I said “we have to go the fastest route”. First couple of taxis weren’t keen they were talking amongst themselves. I’m going to the next one and so on until one of them said he’d do it. We threw our luggage in and I’m yelling go, go, go!! I felt like we were on the Amazing Race. I’ve got to say, he was amazing. If we had any other driver we wouldn’t have stood a chance. His GPS was saying we should get there at 3.45pm. BUT anything could happen driving in Italy for nearly 2 and a half hours. It was the longest drive of or lives. He was flying. Doing 130 in a 100 zone and 125 in a 90 zone. Overtaking every chance he got. He apologised and said he had to get fuel. The taxi had barely come to a stop and he flew out the door, didn’t even close it behind him. Ran to pay, then took off again. Finally, against all odds we arrived and could see the ship ahead. We got to a security guard and he wouldn’t let us through. Our driver was explaining something in Italian and the guard was insistent we had to go to the ship another way. He was explaining how to get there and I was panicking as it was already about 3.45pm and we didn’t know how far we’d have to walk from where the taxi dropped us off. Our driver drove around for a while and couldn’t find another way, so he went back to the guard and started arguing with him. The guard was yelling at the driver and he was yelling back even louder. I actually thought they were going to have a fight or the guard was going to call the police. 😱 our driver took off again searching for access to our ship. We started seeing signs for departures and made it in the nick of time. We hurried in through security at 3.58pm. 🙏 When we were getting our passports out my hands were shaking. Peter’s too. I can’t ever remember being so stressed. Not only would we have lost the thousands we’d already paid for the cruise (all inclusive), but we would have had to book and pay for 7 more nights accommodation, 3 meals a day, flights, ferries and/or trains between countries. So the arm and leg we paid for the taxi was a small price to pay in comparison. When we were checking in, the lady said, “how has your day been?”, I told her it’s been the worst day of our lives. She said well it’s going to get better now. 😂
We boarded the ship still shaky and had a drink or two to calm down! 🍹🍺😱

  • Venice

    16 maj, Italien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We decided this morning that we were going to go on a Gondola. 90€ for a gondola, not per person thankfully. It started to sprinkle shortly after getting in, but stopped quickly and started to clear up. We chose that area to leave from as we wanted a more intimate ride. The others mainly sail along the Grand Canal. It’s wide, choppy, chaotic and not at all what we were after. We are on ferries every day seeing the same things as you would on a gondola. We loved our ride. After that we just got lost in the narrow alleyways of Venice. Discovered a few impressive monuments, churches, synagogues and some markets along the way. AND some new canals to photograph. 😂😂
We enjoyed our dinner so much last night we went back to the same restaurant and ordered something different. It was or last chance to sit alongside a quiet canal watching the gondolas drift past. Marco, our waiter both nights was a character. He made the night even more enjoyable. Back at our room now, full as googs and looking forward to getting on the Norwegian Pearl tomorrow afternoon.

  • Venice - Murano, Burano

    15 maj, Italien ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Woke up to rain this morning. It’s just a drizzle but unfortunately no blue skies. We decided we were still going to the islands today. Forecast for more rain tomorrow anyway. We bought a 3 day pass this morning which will get us everywhere we need to go. Also downloaded an App CheBateo. It’s a great app and gives us timetables and ferry numbers etc so we won’t get lost. lol. Very user friendly thank goodness. 🙏 We stopped at Murano first. This island is known for its glass making/blowing. We went in an old church to watch a demonstration and were the only two there, so we got a private demo. lol incredible how pliable glass is in extreme heat. It was very interesting to watch, and it was also toasty warm in there out of the cold wet weather. There were probably 100 ships selling glass products. Everything you could imagine really. There was also the odd souvenir shop and a few restaurants/cafes along the main canal. We then hopped on another ferry for Burano. It was about a 30 minute ride from Murano. Wow, it’s the most colourful place we’ve seen so far. Chefchaouen was bright but basically blue, Cinque Terre was bright but nowhere near as bright as Burano. It would have looked even prettier if we had blue skies to go with it. We stopped in at a lovely restaurant for some delicious gnocchi. Just what we needed to keep us going. We walked the streets and canals until we were ready to make our way back. A couple of ferries later and we were back near our hotel. I forget to mention we have no hot water. Something went wrong with the whole building and they’ve been scrambling all day to get it sorted. We’re hoping by the time we get home from dinner we’ll have piping hot water for a well deserved shower. 🙏🤞Läs mer

  • Florence to Venice

    14 maj, Italien ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

We left Florence this morning and hopped on our last fast train. The trains really are the way to go. I was nervous about the public transport before leaving Australia and thought a short flight was better than a long train ride. I was wrong. If we ever come back to Europe we’ll definitely only fly if the train trip is longer than 5 hours. We arrived in Venice and the weather looked like it was about to rain. We got a ferry to near our accommodation, and walked the last 4 minutes. Wow, our hotel is very fancy, and our room is massive. We checked in early, dropped our bags and took off to get some photos before the rain. I got a bit overwhelmed looking at the gorgeous little canals and alleyways tucked away. It’s so beautiful. Venice absolutely made it into my top 5 for this trip. Eventually it started to drizzle, we threw on our wet weather gear and wandered aimlessly for hours. What a place to get lost in. We didn’t even pull out our phones to see where we were until we were heading back to get ready for dinner. Love, love, love Venice. 💕We’re supposed to get more rain tomorrow but we’re going to go to Murano and Burano anyway. Fingers crossed it’s not too heavy. ☔️ 🌧️Läs mer

  • Cinque Terre to Florence

    13 maj, Italien ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We left Cinque Terre this morning and headed for Florence. We got the fast train to Pisa, then a regional train to Florence. Our apartment is central to eateries, markets, the train station etc. and it’s massive. We checked in, met the owner then headed out to explore. I didn’t have much on my list for Florence. It was more of a stop over to break up our trip to Venice. I used Google maps to find some statues, fountains and monuments. We walked a lot. Had a delicious lunch upstairs in the marketplace. It started to rain!! First bit of rain since we left 7 weeks ago. It didn’t last long though, maybe half an hour. Lol We had a bit of a shop around before heading back to get ready for dinner. I originally had dinner reservations but decided to cancel so we could go back to the marketplace for dinner. So much variety. It was great to have things to pick from besides pizza, pasta or seafood. 😂Läs mer

  • Cinque Terre

    12 maj, Italien ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We had a big day planned for today. We got a rail pass so we could go between all 5 villages whenever we wanted. It also included shuttle buses and free toilet stops at any of the stations. Our first village was Riomaggiore. Probably one of the most photographed in all of Cinque Terre because of its stunning harbour and vertical brightly coloured houses. It was amazing to be actually standing there after seeing it on social media for years and dreaming of going there one day. The harbour was a mess, there was a huge swell which had the break wall closed so I couldn’t get a photo from where I’d originally planned. I had to improvise. lol we found a few good spots for photos, and even came across a nest with babies screaming for food. So cute. 😊 From there we went to Manorola. Another village similar to Riomaggiore. I walked to the top and found a beautiful church with an amazing view of the coast. We both walked out to the point and got some great shots of the harbour from there. Next stop, Corniglia. We got a shuttle bus up to the village as it’s mostly on top of a hill. We had a lemon sorbet and a drink before starting our hike to Vernazza. It’s estimated to take 1.5 hours but I expected it would take us 2 hours with rests and photos stops. I got so hot I thought I was going to combust. 😂 The steps were very steep and uneven for the first half hour or so. When we made the halfway mark we decided to stop for a cold drink and take in the views. What a cracker of a spot. I could have sat there all day. Stunning! We kept going and soon started the gruelling downhill steps. I don’t know what was harder. I felt sorry for the ones coming up the other
way as I knew what lay ahead for them. We made it back to Vernazza and got the short train ride back to our accommodation in Monterosso. Had the longest shower then relaxed before getting ready to go or for dinner. We had a great day today!

  • Cinque Terre - Monterosso, Vernazza

    11 maj, Italien ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We woke up to the sound of crashing waves right outside our window. It was overcast, a bit windy, and the surf was pumping. It’s normally flat and calm most days, like it was last night when we went to bed. Today, woah! We jumped in a train and went one stop to Vernazza (3 minutes) we wandered around the gorgeous fishing village with colourful vertical houses, all clinging to the cliffs. STAIRS! Never seen so many stairs, they were going in every direction. Some were nearly as high as your knee, but about 6 inches deep. Only enough to get half your foot on. It’s was a shame the little harbour was getting smashed by the waves, but it was still stunning and very different to anything we have back home. We loved it. 😍 We sat down next to the harbour, had a beer each and watched the waves crash over the break wall. The weather brightened up during the day but the surf was relentless. We got the train back to Monterosso and had a nice dinner before heading home. We had to keep the windows shut because the sound of the waves was too loud to get to sleep. Lol Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny all day.Läs mer

  • St Peter’s Basillica - Pope Leo

    10 maj, Italien ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We checked out of our Trevi Fountain accommodation and put our luggage in storage so we could roam freely for the day. Our fast train to Cinque Terre wasn’t until 4.20pm. We roamed around Rome 😂 and eventually ended up at St Peter’s Square. I really wanted to see the sculpture ‘Pieta’ which was inside the Basillica. We arrived at 11.53am and I heard someone ask when the Pope was making his appearance. It was at 12pm!! Only 7 minutes away. We walked through security and into the square. Plenty of space to walk around and find a good position. He surprised us all and appeared from the building next to the Basillica. We had a great view, but couldn’t understand a word he said as it was all in Italian. Not to worry, it was still awesome to see and hear him speak to the people. We had no idea we would get to see him today. The first person I thought to do a video call with was Yvonne. So I talked to her and she got to see and hear Pope Leo with me. When his speech was over we walked into the Basillica. It was grand, beautiful, and of course very ornate. I got to see ‘Pieta’ before heading out. We were back out in the street by 1pm. So much happened in just one hour. 😂 We started our way back towards the Trevi Fountain to collect our luggage, stopping for a drink, then later a gelato. We got an UBER to the station. It was a Tesla, with the biggest boot space I’ve ever seen!! And the doors opened up like the car in Back to the Future. 😎 We arrived in Monterosso at 8pm, checked in and went for a walk along the beach and found a nice restaurant for dinner. Back in the room at 10.30pm getting ready for bed. Looking forward to waking up to this view for the next 3 mornings.Läs mer

  • Rome

    9 maj, Italien ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Nothing planned for today, we decided to just wander around and see what we come across. I went down to the Trevi Fountain at 5.30am and almost had the place to myself. I took a million photos from all angles, then put my phone down and just sat there and took it all in. I don’t know what my obsession is with this fountain, but I just love it. 😍 By 6am there were people slowly coming in but it was still very peaceful and empty. I went back and hopped in bed to look at all my photos. The fountain is about a 1 minute walk, which I planned so I could go as often as I liked. Once we were up we headed off in search of a new suitcase. Mine is almost dead. We walked up the Spanish Steps and into a little church at the top. Then unexpectedly, a massive group of motorcycles rode past, escorted by the police. Hundreds, if not thousands of motorcycles in a convoy through the streets of Rome. I tried Googling what the event was but didn’t find anything. It lasted about 15 minutes straight. We then walked through Piazza Navona, then on to a place where we bought a new suitcase to continue our travels. Poor Peter was nearly carrying my 23kg bag in the end. The wheels were buckled, the chassis was bent, it’s had a rough ride. lolLäs mer

  • Rome, Vatican City

    8 maj, Italien ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We had our first sleep in today. Didn’t get up until after 8am, and didn’t leave the apartment until nearly 10am! We walked to the Coloseum, walked around the outside, then started our way back, deliberately getting lost in the streets of Rome. Every corner there seemed to be something interesting. A monument, a fountain, an ancient building. Unfortunately for us we started our holiday in Egypt. Nothing we’ve seen since had compared. Rome would have blown us away if we hadn’t seen Egypt first. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still impressive, but I feel like we’ve used up all our “WOW’s”. We ended up back at our apartment and got changed to go to the Vatican museum’s. It was close to an hours walk. Our time slot was for 5pm and we went in at exactly 5pm, so that was great. No one waiting inside at security, we walked straight through. I’ve heard you can wait hours in peak season. Plenty of people inside, but not packed and it flowed nicely. We went through faster than some as we’re not into history or museums. I wasn’t even going to visit the Vatican, but I thought I might have regretted it if I didn’t. It’s took us 1.5 hours to get through the whole thing. It’s massive!!! I was looking forward to seeing the Cistine Chapel, but it fell short of my expectations. It was quite noisy in there considering people weren’t allowed to speak. It was just another room with paintings all over the walls and ceiling, like most other rooms in the museum’s. Our tickets included happy hour in the acorn garden inside the Vatican. We got a lot more than I expected, as I didn’t pay much for the tickets on the Vatican website. I reckon we covered well over 10 km’s today.Läs mer

  • Naples to Rome

    7 maj, Italien ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

This morning we did something a bit different. We started our day with a pizza and tiramisu cooking class. I chose Naples to do this activity as it’s the birthplace of pizza, and Peter’s favourite food. In saying that, they don’t have supreme pizza here. (His favourite)😂😂 We had a lot of fun, the chef was funny and engaging. We learnt a couple of tips to try at home, and they gave us the recipe to keep. After our class we went for a roam prune Naples and bought some limoncello to take home. We grabbed our luggage and walked to the train station bound for Rome. Just over an hour later (high speed train) we arrived and jumped in an UBER to get us easily to our apartment. 1 minute walk to the Trevi Fountain. 😍 There’s a light door in every night until 10th May. It projected in to the Trevi Fountain (like Vivid) and has music to it as well. Fantastic, and not something you would normally see visiting Rome. We relaxed and unpacked then went to dinner at a restaurant that is booked out for weeks. We didn’t know this, it was recommended to us by our host. We waited in line and they were only taking people with a reservation. The owner kept saying if someone doesn’t show we can have a table. There was quite a line of people hoping to just walk in. He eventually gave us the green light. There were two tables of two left so we got one and had our dinner and dessert. We went back to our room until 9.30pm when we got picked up for our golf cart tour of Rome. We zipped around everywhere and were told about the history at each spot. Got back just after midnight, then settled in for the night. It is completely quiet in our room, which was surprising given the fact we are right next to a major landmark. ⛲️Läs mer
