  • 03.13.2024 Koh Samui, Thailand

    13. maaliskuuta 2024, Thaimaa ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Today we are in Koh Samui, Thailand.
Koh Samui, Thailand’s second largest island, lies in the Gulf of Thailand off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus. It's known for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves and dense, mountainous rainforest, plus luxury resorts and posh spas.
We had a 6.5 hour Optional excursion with Viking.:
Island Of Koh Pha Ngan and Snorkel
Enjoy an invigorating speedboat ride through the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand to Koh Pha Ngan. Thailand’s fifth-largest island, beautiful Koh Pha Ngan is renowned for its lush green mountainous landscape, white-sand beaches and crystalline waters, which are a favored spot for diving and snorkeling due to the wealth of marine life that call these waters home. Upon arrival, disembark your boat and enjoy time to relax among the beautiful surroundings or take a swim in the ocean. You will also have an opportunity to snorkel from your boat off the shores of Koh Ma, a tiny nearby island off the coast of Koh Pha Ngan. Don your snorkel, then slip beneath the water to explore a rich underwater world full of marine life and colorful coral reefs. Later, enjoy lunch in a local restaurant,
We take the tender, then a van, then a speedboat and finally get to the beach. The snorkeling was good. The pictures are on the underwater camera so will post later.
We return to the ship and have dinner on the pool deck. It is a BBQ. Well done Viking!
A magician is performing in the theatre.
We move clocks forward tonight so we lose an hour.
A few pics of us on the beach and a few pics of street life in Koh Samui.

  • Singapore, Singapore Day 1/3

    15.–17. maalisk. 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Today is our first day in Singapore. We have 3 days here. Our first and last day are only 1/2 days but we plan on maximizing our time the best we can.
We arrived at noon and had face to face immigration with passports and immigration forms completed. We are traveling with Tom and Tammy using the MRT (subway) to get around the city.
Singapore is an island country and city-state in maritime Southeast Asia. It is located about one degree of latitude (137 kilometres or 85 miles) north of the equator, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, bordering the Strait of Malacca to the west, the Singapore Strait to the south along with the Riau Islands in Indonesia, the South China Sea to the east, and the Straits of Johor along with the State of Johor in Malaysia to the north. The country's territory comprises one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet;. It has the second highest population density of any country in the world.
We buy 3 day MRT(subway) passes. Our first stop is Chinatown to see the Chinatown street market.
Chinatown's maze of narrow roads includes Chinatown Food Street, with its restaurants serving traditional fare like Hainanese chicken rice, noodles and satay. Souvenir shops and indie boutiques dot the area, offering clothes etc. Cultural institutions here include the 1827 Sri Mariamman Temple and the ornate Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum.
We then went to Mohammed Ali Lane to see the murals and stop into the Sri Mariamman Temple. It is over the top in decorations.
We proceeded from there to the Changi Airport to see the Jewel. The most amazing airport we had ever been in.
    Per google:
Step out of the airport right into a lush green sanctuary, a tranquil retreat in the core of the world's best transport hub. Immerse yourself in this garden wonderland and meet Singapore, the City in Nature.
Jewel houses more than 2,000 trees and palms, and over 10,000 shrubs covering a total area of more than 21,000sqm. There are some 120 species, originating from countries all around the globe, such as Australia, Spain, Thailand, and the United States.

We decided head back into the city and stop in the Chijmus which is an old convent and orphanage that has been converted into many eateries . We eat at a Japanese restaurant where we cooked our own steak. It was fun, different and the steak was good.
We catch the MRT and return to the ship. It’s late but one of our favorite bartenders leaves tomorrow for his 2 month break and we want to bid him farewell so we head to Torshaven, the night club for a quick night cap and then head for bed.

  • 03.16.2024 Singapore, Singapore Day 2/3

    15. maaliskuuta 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Tom, Tammy, Myron and Diana are ready for another great day in Singapore.
Following breakfast, we clear immigration and again hop on the MRT.
The MRT is a very clean, fast way to maneuver around the city. Well thought out with great signage.
Our first stop of the day was the Sultan Mosque.
Sultan Mosque or Masjid Sultan is a mosque located at Muscat Street and North Bridge Road within the Kampong Glam precinct of the district of Rochor in Singapore. It was named after Sultan Hussain Shah. The mosque was inaugurated on 27 December 1936. In 1975, it was designated a national monument. It holds 5000 worshipers.
We then went to the Raffles Hotel home of the Singapore Sling where of course we had to try one.
We then hopped back on the MRT to Gardens By The Bay. We visited the Cloud Forest, the Flower Dome and finally decided to have a late lunch at the Shake Shack.
We wandered over to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Oh my, huge three separate towers all together by a surf board type top.
There were high end shops on every level. After a few beers we returned to the Gardens By The Bay to see the super trees lit up. It was put to music which I guess changes every so often. Tonight was opera arias. Amazing.
We retraced our steps back to the ship and are ready for bed.
We have one more day tomorrow with all aboard at 1:00 pm.

  • 03.17.2024 Singapore, Singapore Day 3/3

    16. maaliskuuta 2024, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Our final day in Singapore.
The four of us met up on the Living Room and walked off the ship about 9:15 this morning. We hop on the MRT and head to see Merlion.
The Merlion is the official mascot of Singapore. It is depicted as a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Being of prominent symbolic nature to Singapore and Singaporeans in general, it is widely used to represent both the city state and its people.
We saw many bronze sculptures along the waterfront.
We did a brief walk through the historic Fullerton Hotel that was the central post office from 1929 to 1996.
The picture of the cake is what I told Myron he could buy me for our anniversary. (we met 28 years ago). It’s only $108.
We headed back to the ship but we had to turn in our MRT Tourist cards to get $20 back. So we went to one of the many malls that are in Singapore. Diana spent it on a pair of linen pants.
We returned to the ship and set sail for Malaysia about 3: 00 pm.
This afternoon we listened to some Irish music in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Myron, since he is part of the choir were all asked to sing “What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor”. Fun afternoon. 🍀
Dinner tonight at the Chef Table with Tom, Tammy, Larry and Lucy. We had an amazing meal and great company.
Of to bed as tomorrow is another full day.

  • 03.18.2024 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    18. maaliskuuta 2024, Malesia ⋅ 🌙 77 °F

Today we are visiting Kuala Lumpur. The capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur was built by Chinese tin prospectors in the mid-1800s.
Since then, the city of KL, as the locals call it, has grown into a stunning mix of colonial, Moorish, Tudor, neo-Gothic and Grecian-Spanish architecture. The two-story shophouses of Old Market Square, with storefronts below and residences above, reveal the lives of merchants. The magnificent Petronas Towers are the centerpiece of this fascinating city; the side-by-side twin spires resemble a pair of rockets, connected by a two-story sky bridge that spans the 41st and 42nd floors.
We have an 8 hour optional excursion with Viking, called “Kuala Lumpur's Blue Mosque & Other Highlights.”
    Here are the details:
Ride from port past impressive new developments, then enjoy a photo stop at the landmark Blue Mosque. The largest mosque in Southeast Asia, it can hold 24,000 worshippers.
Next is the National Monument, a bronze statue honoring soldiers who died during the Communist Insurgency in the 1950s. It was designed by Felix De Weldon, who also created the Iwo Jima monument.
Stop briefly and view Independence Square, including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Merdeka 118. The second tallest building in the world after Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Our next visit was to ride to the top of the needle-like Kuala Lumpur Tower for 360-degree views.
Next we stopped for a photo of the world's tallest twin skyscraper, Petronas Towers.
After lunch we had time at the Karyaneka Handicraft center to shop for peter, crystal, glass, and textiles. We didn’t buy a thing.
It is extremely hot and of course very humid. Real feel of 101.
Our guides says they have 3 seasons every day; hot, very hot and super hot.
Following our tour we returned to our ship.
We had dinner tonight in the Restaurant with Terry and Beth.
It was very good. Dessert was one of the best!
A beautiful sunset over the Andaman Sea.

    19. maaliskuuta 2024, Malesia ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Welcome to Langkawi! Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 islands on the west coast of Malaysia. Surrounded by the Andaman Sea, the main island offers a mixture of picturesque paddy fields, jungle-clad hills, and tranquil waterfalls. The expansive shoreline is fringed by powder-fine sand and swaying coconut trees.
Randy and Vicki from South Dakota joined us today for touring the island by taxi.
Our guide Sahair could hardly speak English but he tried really hard to give us a good tour. We went to the cable car that took us to top of Matchincang Mountain. There were some really good views.
We next stopped at a beach as we were going to have a beer. But… it is Ramadan so fasting is in effect. No beer, limited restaurants open and limited shopping.
Diana did get to hear the call for prayer and tried to record it but that didn’t work.
We then asked to go to Eagle Landing. It is huge and very cool to see.
We were extremely hot by then and asked to go back to the port.
The guys went directly to the ship and Vicki and I went to do a little shopping. Nothing struck our fancy so we also returned to the ship for an icy margarita. Yum!
The four of us had dinner in the dining room and we then went to the Star theatre to hear Joe, one of the Viking singers in a solo performance.
A beautiful sunset as we sail away from Langkawi.

  • 03.20.2024 George Town , Malaysia

    20. maaliskuuta 2024, Malesia ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

George Town is the colorful, multicultural capital of the Malaysian island of Penang. Once an important Straits of Malacca trading hub, the city is known for its British colonial buildings, Chinese shophouses and mosques. Beyond the old town, George Town is a modern city with skyscrapers and shopping malls. Verdant Penang Hill, with hiking and a funicular railway, overlooks it all.
Today’s optional excursion: We rode the funicular railway to the peak of Penang Hill, and visited Kek Lok Si, Malaysia's largest Buddhist temple.
Our tram climbed to the summit of Penang's highest hill, Bukit Bendera, which reaches an altitude of over 2,700 feet above sea level. From here we enjoyed a spectacular panoramic view overlooking George Town and the Strait of Malacca.
Diana (Myron’s knees did not want to go that many steps) saw the Penang Hill Mosque, or Masjid Bukit Bendera, it is the only mosque on Penang Hill. Erected for use by Muslims living and working on the Hill, the mosque is located at a short distance from the Hindu Temple. The majority of users of the mosque are those working at the stalls near the Penang Hill Railway Station, government servants working on Penang Hill
She then visited Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan, or better known as the Penang Hill Hindu Temple, is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Penang. It was set up in the 1800's as a small shrine to the Hindu deity Murugan (the deity associated with Thaipusam) by the Indian sepoys and sedan chair carriers, and is located at a mount within Penang Hill called Gun Hill.
Next, we traveled to the Kek Lok Si Temple-one of the best-known Buddhist temples on the island and one of the biggest and most stunning in all of Southeast Asia. Its striking seven-tiered pagoda blends Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architecture and craftsmanship, and the sacred Pond of Longevity is home to hundreds of tortoises. In Chinese culture, tortoises are a symbol of longevity, strength, and endurance, and here they are set free by local worshippers.
While at the temple we went to see the 36.57-metre-tall (120 ft) bronze statue of Guanyin (Kuan Yin), the Goddess of Mercy.
Lunch was on the 21st floor of a hotel. Great views. The spaghetti was spicy!
Dinner tonight was with Randy and Vicki at the Chef’s table. We experienced the Xian menu tonight. Good food and great company.
We end the evening with Chris Powley, the voice of legends.
Clocks back an hour do yea! we get some extra sleep.

We have breakfast , repack and meet our guide and driver at 9:30. We drive about 3-4 hours to Agra where the Red Fort and Taj Mahal are located.
Upon leaving Delhi we saw many strange sights. The garbage is unreal. According to Siam there are 18 million people living in the city. The smells and air quality are overwhelming. Thank goodness for masks.
We arrived in Agra and checked into our hotel.
Agra is a city on the banks of the Yamuna river in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, about 230 kilometres (140 mi) south-east of the national capital ofDelhi. Its population is roughly 1.6 million, Agra is also known as the City of love.
We then toured the Red Fort. What a place.
Near the gardens of the Taj Mahal stands the important 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort of Agra. This powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses, within its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls, the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises many fairy-tale palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques.
The grand finale was sunset at the Taj Mahal. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would see this.
Dinner and drinks with friends and then off to bed. Added a few pictures of life in Agra, India. This pretty lady wanted to show off her baby. She brought her to our vehicle so she could blow us kisses.

Welcome to sunrise at the Taj Mahal in Agra in India. Our guide picked us up at 5:45am this morning for a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the right bank of the river Yamuna in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was commissioned in 1631 by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (r. 1628–1658) to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal; it also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan himself. The tomb is the centrepiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.
What an experience. The tile work, the marble, the precious stone linkage were beautiful.Photos will never do it justice.
We returned to our hotel the Jaypee Palace, a beautiful hotel for breakfast and to shower, repack and get on the road. Before leaving Agra, we visit a marble factory where we learned how they inlay the gemstones. Fascinating.
We then proceeded to a carpet store where we learned how they make hand knotted carpets. Diana got to burn the carpet. (all part of the process). They were beautiful, extremely labor intensive and expensive.
We left the city and headed to Jaipur.
A holy cow (dressed up, so he is sacred) and the milkman. It is true the cows just roam the streets wherever they wish. The children were so enchanting. They loved us to take their pictures.
We arrived at the Hilton in Jaipur around 6:30 pm. Got checked in and headed to the bar with our crew and Don and Kully from our ship joined us.
We ordered a pizza a beer. Off to bed we have another early morning tomorrow.

  • 03.29.2024 Jaipur to Dehli, India

    29. maaliskuuta 2024, Intia ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Today we toured Jaipur, known as the “Pink City”.
Jaipur is the capital of India’s Rajasthan state. It evokes the royal family that once ruled the region and that, in 1727, founded what is now called the Old City, or “Pink City” for its trademark building color. At the center of its stately street grid (notable in India) stands the opulent, colonnaded City Palace complex. With gardens, courtyards and museums, part of it is still a royal residence.
After breakfast which was delicious by the way we made our first photo stop at
    Hawa Mahal Palace.
The structure was built in 1799 by the Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the founder of the city of Jhunjhunu in the state of Rajasthan.[1] He was so inspired by the unique structure of Khetri Mahal that he built this grand and historical palace.
It was designed by Lal Chand Ustad. Its five-floor exterior is akin to a honeycomb with its 953 small windows called Jharokhas decorated with intricate latticework. The original intent of the lattice design was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life and festivals celebrated in the street below without being seen. This architectural feature also allowed cool air from the Venturi effect to pass through, thus making the whole area more pleasant during the high temperatures in summer. Many people see the Hawa Mahal from the street view and think it is the front of the palace, but it is the back
    We viewed the back.
We next made a brief stop at the Stepwells.. Stepwells (also known as vavs or baori) are wells, cisterns or ponds with a long corridor of steps that descend to the water level. Stepwells played a significant role in defining subterranean architecture in western India from 7th to 19th century. Some stepwells are multi-storeyed and can be accessed by a Persian wheel which is pulled by a bull to bring water to the first or second floor. They are most common in western India.
Next Amber Fort. Amber Fort is located in Amer, Rajasthan, India. Amer is a town with an area of 4 square kilometres (1.5 sq mi) located 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Located high on a hill, it is the principal tourist attraction in Jaipur. Amer Fort is known for its artistic style elements. With its large ramparts and series of gates and cobbled paths, the fort overlooks Maota Lake, which is the main source of water for the Amer Palace.
A photo stop at the Water Palace was next. No commoners allowed, only the Royal family. Jal Mahal (meaning "Water Palace") is a palace in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city, the capital of the state of Rajasthan, India. The palace was originally constructed around 1699; the building and the lake around it were later renovated and enlarged in the early 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber.
We continue on the City Palace.
The City Palace, Jaipur is a royal residence and former administrative headquarters of the rulers of the Jaipur State in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Construction started soon after the establishment of the city of Jaipur under the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who moved his court to Jaipur from Amber, in 1727. Jaipur remained the capital of the kingdom until 1949—when it became the capital of the present-day Indian state of Rajasthan—with the City Palace functioning as the ceremonial and administrative seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur. The construction of the Palace was completed in 1732 and it was also the location of religious and cultural events, as well as a patron of arts, commerce, and industry. It was constructed according to the rules of vastushastra, combining elements of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles. It now houses the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, and continues to be the home of the Jaipur royal family. The royal family has around 500 personal servants. The palace complex has several buildings, various courtyards, galleries, restaurants, and offices of the Museum Trust. The MSMS II Museum Trust is headed by chairperson Rajamata Padmini Devi of Jaipur (from Sirmour in Himachal Pradesh). Princess Diya Kumari runs the Museum Trust, as its secretary and trustee. She also manages The Palace School and Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh School in Jaipur. She founded and runs the Princess Diya Kumari Foundation to empower underprivileged and underemployed women of Rajasthan. She is also an entrepreneur. In 2013, she was elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Rajasthan from the constituency of Sawai Madhopur.
The many doors at the Palace were stunning.
We went to a jewelry store that was too rich for our blood and then to a textile store where we learned about block printing. We perused so many wares and we bought a new duvet cover.
On to lunch at the Green Pigeon. Chicken and rice which was very good.
We then proceeded back to Delhi.
    The traffic is horrendous and
we didn’t check into the Eros Hotel until after 8:00 pm. Another long exhausting day. One more day in India as tomorrow we tour Delhi itself.

  • 03.30.2024 Dehli, India

    30. maaliskuuta 2024, Intia ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Today we explored Delhi. The New Delhi and Old Delhi.

We began our journey in old Delhi at Jama Masjid, A beautiful pocket of calm at the heart of Old Delhi's mayhem, the capital's largest mosque is built on a 10m elevation. It can hold a mind-blowing 25,000 people. The marble and red- sandstone structure, known also as the ‘Friday Mosque’, was Shah Jahan’s final architectural triumph, built between 1644 and 1658. The four watchtowers were used for security. There are two minarets standing 40m high, one of which can be climbed for amazing views. We did not climb the minarets.

We did a quick photo drive at Raj Ghat.
On the banks of the Yamuna River, this peaceful, very well maintained park contains a simple black-marble platform marking the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated following his assassination in 1948.

We then visited Swaminarayan Akshardham, Delhi's largest temple, which was built in 2005, and is breathtakingly lavish. Artisans used ancient techniques to carve the pale red sandstone into elaborate reliefs, including 20,000 deities, saints and mythical creatures. The centerpiece is a 3m-high gold statue of Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan surrounded by more fabulously intricate carvings.
The temple was indescribable. We were there during prayers so many Hindu’s participated. No photos allowed but we pulled a few images from the internet.

We left Old Delhi and entered New Delhi. This where all the government offices are located as New Delhi is the capital of Delhi.
We next drove past India Gate. India Gate (memorial to the Indian army soldiers who died in the world war I), Drive past the Rashtrapati Bhavan (formerly the viceroy’s residence) and the Parliament House - The Parliament House is 173 m in diameter, has a colonaded verandah and the roof of the outer circle is supported by 247 pillars.

Back to Old Delhi where we visited Humayun’s Tomb, a Unesco World Heritage Site built in 1570, is of particular cultural significance as it was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. It inspired several major architectural innovations, culminating in the construction of the Taj Mahal. It was beautiful.

Our final stop as far as touring is concerned is Qutab Minar, a Unesco World Heritage Site built in the early 13th century, the red sandstone tower of Qutab Minar is 72.5 m high. The surrounding archaeological area contains funerary buildings, notably the magnificent Alai- Darwaza Gate, the masterpiece of Indo-Muslim art (built in 1311), and two mosques, including the Quwwatu'l-Islam, the oldest in northern India, built of materials reused from some 20 Brahman temples. (which are Buddhist and Hindu)

We then had a very late lunch or early dinner at Suribachi a global cuisine restaurant. Myron had spaghetti and Diana had baked lasagna. It was delicious and a nice change from chicken and rice.

Early to bed as we have a 4:00 am pick up to go to the airport to head to Mauritius. It’s a 7.5 hour flight so it will be a long day.
We had an amazing adventure in India. Very long, hot days packed with some amazing sights. We learned a lot. We saw a lot. We visited many of India’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Understanding the caste system was eye opening to say the least. If you are born into a lower class you will always be a lower class unless you leave the country. The poverty, the filth was everywhere along with some beautiful things such as wide open green spaces.
Again, a country with proud people who wanted to share their stories and life. We had a farmer who wanted us to come visit his home. (we didn’t go)
Water, truly is the lifeline to life. We saw many affects of not having it.
We are glad we went to experience such a small piece of India.

    31. maalisk.–2. huhtik. 2024, Mauritius ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Happy Easter! Christ has risen. Alleluia! Today we flew to Mauritius. I know it will shock the family but we are flying economy. Air Mauritius is much more spacious than United or Delta, more like premium economy. That is a good thing as we have a. 7.5 hour flight.
It was an excellent day to leave India as the air quality deteriorated tremendously overnight. You need to enlarge the airport picture in order to see a plane that is right across the tarmac from us.
Terry and Beth have left the cruise and are off on another adventure. We will miss them and so loved spending time with them.
Of course we met up with Brian and Jonathan at the airport. They flew business class so they took one of our rollerboards for us.
We arrived and checked into our hotel, unpacked and called it a day. We are staying at the LeSuffren Hotel and Marina. A very expensive city but a beautiful location and after India we feel we are back in civilization.

  • 04.01.2024 Port Louis, Mauritius

    1. huhtikuuta 2024, Mauritius ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

We are spending our day in Port Louis, Mauritius.
Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation, is known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs. The mountainous interior includes Black River Gorges National Park, with rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and wildlife like the flying fox. Capital Port Louis has sites such as the Champs de Mars horse track, Eureka plantation house and 18th-century Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens.
What a great nights sleep we had. Our room is a 2 story suite as the first room smelled awful of smoke. Great air conditioning, no smells and clean.
We grabbed a taxi after breakfast to have an island tour.
We visited the Citadel for some amazing views of the City, Indian Ocean and the Marina.
The construction of Citadel Fort began on 11th November 1830 and ended 10 years later on 4th November 1840 and was built in the honour of the wife of King William IV. Out of the four fortresses built by the British during the 19th century, it is only the Citadel Fort, also known as Fort Adelaide, that resisted the French invasion.
The Fort was originally built as a means to fortify the defense of Port Louis but was never used for that reason. It is now known as a famous spot for impressive views of the Capital. The Fort itself is an impressive sight. With the wall made of huge cut stones of basalt rocks, the Fort still holds some remnants from the past such as cannons.
However, the Citadel Fort is now famous for the 360-degree view of the Capital. Here, you will have a breathtaking view of the Capital and you get it from all the angles!
We next visited the Cathedral of Port Louis. Several churches have been built in succession at this location. Between 1752 and 1756, Joseph-François Charpentier de Cossigny built the first, which soon fell apart, and then was hit by a cyclone in 1760. A new church collapsed again on April 9, 1773 as a result of another cyclone. A further reconstruction in 1782 soon ended in collapse. Subsequently, the building was restored in 1814 by Sir Robert Townsend Farquhar, the first British governor, until the same recurring structural problems reappeared in 1819. Bishop Jacques Leen rebuilt the structure from 1930 to 1933, and a final restoration was completed in 2007.
We drove past many government buildings including the Prime Minister’s resident and the Municipality of Port Louis.
Our next stop was an ATM as none of the markets accept US dollars or credit cards. That was crazy. There must of been 100 people in this building with 6 atm machines. Took us about 20 minutes.
After the ATM we went to the Central Market. The vegetables looked amazing. Our big purchase was our customary magnet.
Our final stop was yes, you guessed it another Hindu Temple. Kannanur Mariamman Kovil Temple is Intricately hand carved wooden sculptures of Hindu Gods, Kannanur Mariamman Kovil Hindu. The ceilings medallions are always so beautiful but I think we are templed out.
Back to the hotel and spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool.
Dinner tonight was on the water with Don, Kully, Warren and Allison. Fish and chips with wine was on the menu.
Back to the hotel and called it a night. Tomorrow the Viking Neptune docs about 6:30 am . We plan on being on board by 9:00.

The Viking Neptune arrived today and our only plan was to reboard the ship, have breakfast and unpack suitcases.
Diana’s heart stopped for a few minutes today as she left a sling bag with our passports and medications in the cab that took us from the hotel to the ship. We noticed just as we were heading into the terminal towards security so Myron went back outside as Diana called the hotel. Our driver thankfully saw the bag did a loop in the port and delivered it safely to Myron. Tragedy diverted.
Went to breakfast at the Restaurant. Ahhh, civilization. We sent out laundry, threw the items that did not go in a dryer into a machine. Unpacked, got organized and hit the Spa.
Diana downloaded pictures from her phone, 853 to be exact and sorted them into their folders. She decided to meet Myron in the Living Room and play Pinochle. He won 3 of 4 games.
Myron had a haircut at 4. We had dinner in the Restaurant tonight with Randy and Vicki. Neither of us slept good last night as we think we were excited just to get back to the ship. We are off to bed,

Happy birthday Angie Dawn. May your day be as special and bright as you are. Love you beyond all the moon and the stars.❤️❤️ It was great to hear your voice today. We sure miss family.
We are sailing in the Indian Ocean somewhere off the coast of Madagascar heading south to Richard’s Bay, Africa.
The seas are super bouncy today. We are feeling the effects of Cyclone Germane which was originally heading to Mauritius when we were there but changed course. Per Captain Richard’s noon report we are experiencing Sea State of 6 which is a moderate gale, with wind to 30.5 knots, average waves of 14' (but up to 29'), the sea heaps up, and spindrift combines with froth from the breaking waves.
Diana has a lot of catching up to do on photos but also has a few lectures she and Myron want to attend.
At 9:30 is Guest Lecture with Mr. Douglas Field: “Boering News."
    Follow the adventures of "journalist"
Winston Churchill during the Boer War in South Africa and the stories they generated. Diana ended up missing it and attended a bead/knot necklace class at 10:00.
At 11:00 is Guest Lecture with Dr. Sheila K. Hoffman: “The Silk Road and the Wine Dark Seas."
Encounter the luxury goods traded from the Far East to Africa and the Mediterranean since ancient times. Diana missed this as well as she was working on photo books.
At 4:30 we listened to Guest Lecture with Dr. Tony Waltham:
"Across Africa's Rift Valley to Sof Omar."
Appreciate the vast Rift Valley in a journey across Ethiopia from Addis Ababa to the great river caves of Sof Omar.
All three of these are new lecturers for us.
We had dinner in the Restaurant with Carol, Jonathan and Brian.
Myron went to listen to Lois, one of the Viking singers in the Star theatre and Diana went to bed.

Another sea day. The seas are calmer and the sun is shining. It’s 80 degrees. Diana had a facial at 9:00 followed by a beaded earring class at 10:00. She also painted a canvas bag that she stenciled.
Myron attended a few lectures and caught some rays by the infinity pool.
Diana attended Russell Lee’s puzzle game at 2:00. It was difficult but fun.
Diana continues to plow through photos.
Dinner tonight at Manfredi’s with Harley and Priscilla.
Myron loved his dessert. Caramello which is crispy laminated dough, fudge bites, vanilla gelato, hot caramel sauce.
    Delicious!

  • 04.06.2024 Richard’s Bay, S. Africa

    6.–10. huhtik. 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

We have a four night overland safari. There are eight of us in our group. Tom and Catherine, Stacey and Ursula and Randy and Vicki from SD.
We are staying at the Sungalwane Private Game Lodge. It is amazing. We have a safari late this afternoon and then both morning and night safaris on the 7th and 8th. We finish with a morning safari on the 9th and are then taken to the airport in Durban and fly to CapeTown. Were have 6 opportunities to see the Big 5.
We have a full day excursion on the 10th in CapeTown and reboard our ship late that afternoon. A trip of a lifetime!
Well things don’t always go as planned.
Today we were to disembark in Richard’s Bay. Due to high winds and swells along with a narrow harbor. We were unable to go so we moved on to Durban but wouldn’t get there till about 3:00. Our transportation to our lodge agreed to meet us there instead but we would have a 3 hr drive to the lodge instead of 1.5 hours.
While we waited Gail Lee did a pop up felting project to make a bracelet. That was fun.
Once we got to Durban the weather quickly changed. The winds picked up, the swells grew in higher and were more intense. After two attempts to dock, we had to abort Durban as well.
No overland safaris for us at least on this trip.
We are now heading to our next port of call, Port Elizabeth. We arrive there on Monday the 8th weather permitting.
Dinner in the restaurant tonight with Vicki and Randy. We discussed alternatives to get to Richard’s Bay but the flights are just too long and/or complicated. No pictures of today.
Seas are bouncy tonight. Hope they calm down soon.
