One last post

Today was a travel day! We woke up bright and early to head to Dublin Airport. Erin's stuff got inspected so it was a nice welcome to the first airport of the day. We had an awesome breakfast of bacon and waffles then boarded our Ryan Air flight on time. 10/10 would recommend a morning Ryan Air flight, we had no issues and no $1000 extra charges either. We even got moved to an exit row seat as the girls who were randomly assigned there were under 16.
We got to Stansted and had 2 hours to kill before we could check in. It actually went by so fast although Stansted airport is really just a big shed, giving me food pavilion at the Easter Show vibes. We checked in and got exit row seats for the flight (although not together). We also realised our long flight was also not together 🫠 We came up with a few plans of attack to change this but spoilers, they were both full flights so we spent 19 hours flying apart.
We headed through security for one last Wetherspoons visit, a nice surprise. We first past the DJ who was playing in the duty free section though? We grabbed some lunch and drinks at Spoons, then headed to our gates. First flight to Dubai was super quick and easy, but we arrived late so it was an absolute power through the airport. We arrived at our next gate and everyone was boarding. We said goodbye again and headed to our seats. I sat next to a guy from Newcastle in the UK, so that was fun to have a chat. I also got some quality sleep on the flight which was very helpful.
We finally arrived in Sydney and got through immigration and customs quite quickly. Then we saw Toni and Tony! So very nice to be back. Fingers crossed the jet lag isn't too bad!Okumaya devam et

It might be time to come home now

Today we woke up and had fancy free breakfast at the castle. I was surprised at the selection and kept waiting for them to charge us but it seems even the economy room gets royal brekky. We went for a walk along the coast road. We found the entrance to another castle, there was a funny young horse running up and down the fields, chewing the fences and he came and said hello to us. We walked down to the castle and the ruins were intact and beautiful. It overlooked the river and the ocean surrounded by green fields. We tried to get out another way but got absolutely covered in mud, risking trench foot once again.
We then headed back to our accommodation castle and checked out. Walking back into town, we stopped for an Irish coffee which was absolutely delicious. We then jumped on the bus to head to Dublin.
The bus was pretty quiet until we were about 40 mins from Galway when all the youth got on the bus to head to ladies day at the races. All very fancy looking and such classic race banter. We got to Galway and then had to change buses. We finally got into Dublin and walked to our accommodation. As a special last day treat, our accommodation was a day out and actually booked for Friday night so the hostel people got us into a room of 4 with only one other person. We carried our bags up a narrow staircase and opened the door to an older Irish man who was in between houses... Look he seemed nice enough, telling us his story, how he's a regular at the hostel and asking us about our trip however a part of me was very nervous about staying in the room with him. He gave us recommendations about pubs and was really up for a char. Erin and I unpacked stuff but after we left the room we both decided that we'd prefer to stay else where. Luckily we were able to book somewhere semi cheap and very close, so we had to head back with the excuse that they'd found us a private room where we wouldn't disturb him in the morning.
We walked to the new hotel and I immediately felt better. We grabbed a Guinness and then decided to head to Wetherspoons for one last meal. On our way, we saw a lot of people with Irish flags and soccer gear. Erin predicted correctly, it was to do with the world cup. It was a welcome home parade for the team. It was very cool to see the amount of people who had come out.
At Wetherspoons, we got stopped by security and he laughed at my license when I handed it to him. Erin's mobile license was even more comical. We thought for sure he wouldn't let us in, however he did and said he'd visited Parramatta? A weird interaction. After dinner we found dessert and listened to some Irish music before heading back to get some sleep before starting the journey home tomorrow. I am very exhausted, I think the past few weeks have all caught up with me!Okumaya devam et

Irish locals love a chat

Today we woke up, had our free toast from the hostel and headed to get bus snacks for later in the day. We then jumped in a taxi and headed to the Cregmore Park golf course. The driver was a character, telling us about how bad the public transport system here is (despite profiting as a taxi driver) and how much new infrastructure is made by Americans. We learnt that he was from Togo and all about life there. He was so amazed we were from Australia and kept asking us questions about home. We finally got to the golf course and he told us to call him when we needed to get back.
We went into the pro shop and got everything we needed to play. The man gave us lots of extra golf balls...
The course was quite muddy and the rough was very long but we eventually got used to the clubs and had some good shots. I was able to actually use the driver, which I cannot do in Australia so that was a plus. I played a solid round and had a lot of fun. We had a guy catch up to us, give some coaching tips and also give us a tip on the horses for race week. Everyone is so friendly here and always up for a chat. We headed back to the pro shop, tried to call another taxi but finally caved and Erin called our friend. She said he immediately knew she was the Aussie and said he was on his way. The man at the pro shop gave us a free coffee while we waited which was lovely. Our friend the taxi driver arrived and we headed back to town. The conversation was similar and we drove a different way back so he could show us more of the town.
We then grabbed our bags and headed to the coach station, but the bus we wanted to catch was fully booked. So we had to go to the pub to kill time. Erin attempted to download multiple betting apps to place bets on the races and found some weird app where you can also bet against winning? Then it was time to jump on the bus to Clifden. The journey was pretty and the town was very cute. We headed up to the castle where we were staying and there was a helipad... We knew we were definitely out of place, but then quickly put in our place when we entered our 'economy' room. Literally just enough room for a bed and you had to duck to get into the bathroom.
We headed back into town for dinner and the waitress was so friendly. She asked us about our trip and was surprised we were staying at the castle. She told us to watch out for the owners son as she knows the family, which was hilarious. It seems to be a small tourist town where everyone knows everyone.
We headed back to the castle for a drink and there was some live piano playing. There seemed to be a lot of Americans staying which was interesting. A older man across from us struck up a conversation (no it wasn't the owners son) but he was a local. He told us about his mates business which is beach horse rides (!!!!) so I'll have to come back when we have more time. Erin was doing the heavy lifting with the small talk so we politely excused ourselves and headed back to our small room. We had a massive day meeting the locals.Okumaya devam et

Welcome to the Land o Guinness

Today we woke up bright and early to head out to Ireland. We dropped the car off at the airport, handed the keys I hope to a guy at the car company.... We checked into Ryan Air without a hitch and made it through lots of security pretty quickly. There were heaps of Formula One merch seeming like everyone was headed home from the race. Americans seemed to be everywhere and Erin even heard a person request an ice coffee and complain that there was no Starbucks.
We boarded our flight a little bit late but again, with no issues which was a Ryan Air miracle. We arrived in Dublin and found the bus stop to Galway pretty easily. We jumped on the bus and spread out, it took about 2 and a half hours but it was a nice relaxing journey.
We dropped our bags to the hostel and headed straight to a walking tour of the city. We heard a lot of stories about the town and got some good recommendations. Highlights included stories about love triangles resulting in deaths and hangings, churches being used as stables and tour guide singing the original Galway Girl in a capella.
We then stopped in for a Guinness on our walk back to the hostel and it was already classic Irish dingey pub. We stopped for a snack at Supermacs and I had incredibly spiced chicken tenders, they rival the Colonels for taste. We checked in and headed for dinner at another pub. It turns out it's Galway race week, meaning everyone is watching or attending the horse racing. The pub was full of larrikans and people having a good time.
We headed out and a random guy gave us a craft beer pub recommendations which we headed to. It was on the other side of the river and it was more a brewery vibe than a Irish pub vibe. We played a game of who wants to be a millionaire with some very British specific questions. Then we headed to get Erin her Irish whiskey, which she seemed to enjoy more than she usually has. We hit a touristy shop that was playing Taylor Swift bangers and got some souvenirs. We then hit home and fell off to sleep, the holiday is really catching up with me now!Okumaya devam et

Farewells to yurt and friends

Today we woke up for the final time in the yurt. We packed everything up, grabbed one final bacon sandwich and headed to Brussels. The drive was fairly easy and it was time to say farewell to Holly and Kate. It was so nice spending time all together and the group really got along so well. We'll see Kate soonish but it'll be a while to we see Holly, the newest UK convert. Kate is off to Paris then home and Holly is off to Paris as well but then will continue her travels.
We then navigated back through Brussels to the outskirts to our accommodation. It was confusing to find the accom but luckily a lady eventually came out with our key. We then turned the Matilda's game on and it was almost half time, so after a brief sit we headed into the main centre.
We found an Irish pub and watched the end of the game which was very exciting. We then walked trying to find somewhere for lunch. After passing a few places, one place got us as the waiter put on an Aussie accent after asking where we are from. We then visited a bar named the Squire which had a horse shoe as its logo and horses on every table. The waiter was wild and when I went to pay, the waiter and I were dancing together. He literally grabbed my hands and we did a quick two step. Dance is the universal language. On our exit, some other guy was also having a boogie with us. The Squire really was my scene.
Next we walked to what Liisa dubbed the 'oldest shopping street in the world' which was literally home to about 10 chocolate/macaron shops. Liisa tried 3 different macarons and had a good time. We then got a Belgium waffle, however we weren't allowed to sit in the shop unless we all bought a drink... So we struggled to eat them outside with what resembled a toothpick. Erin was the Waffle Wally and somehow managed to have cream on her nose. We had seen this souvenir of a small boy statue peeing literally EVERYWHERE so had to check it out. It was Pissing Boy, potentially the son of the original Pissing Men (see Prague day). It was also a tiny statue, which is allegedly a replica. We bought souvenirs anyway as it was hilarious.
We then caught the train back and walked once again in the rain. Had a shower and watched some Vampire Diaries. It's been a big few days for us all.Okumaya devam et

F1 Day 3 - Minimal rain, maximum dancing

Today we got up and it was a chilly morning to begin. We got ready for race day and set off for the track early. We got to go in a different entrance so we saw some other views of the track and areas to sit if we ever come back. We trekked up to the area we sat in yesterday morning and found a position closer to the screen so watching the race was easier. We set up our little camp to spend the day there. We took turns going for beers, coffee and toilet breaks. We played some games, usually drinking based ones to pass the time as well.
The F2 race was super crazy with lots of incidents and good racing. We were lucky enough to see the Aussie Jack Doohan win the race which was super fun. He and 2nd place did a shoey and we sung along to the Aussie anthem. They had another category of racing, then the drivers parade started. The vibes were low from our section but we tried to hype up the drivers when they came past. We got out the Aussie flag too and got a wave from Piastri, two thumbs up from Riccardo. I think other drivers waved at us too. Some drivers definitely weren't feeling the parade though which is always interesting to see.
The race was fun to watch live, it felt like it went so much quicker and it was crazy to see the actual gaps as its hard to tell on TV. Unfortunately, our Aussies had a bad day and it was a standard result of a Max win but we were happy with a ferrari on the podium. A few of our other faves had solid races too.
We then headed back to the fan zone witnessing many many people jumping the fence to head onto the track to watch the podium. It was actually chaos. We could see the celebrations in the distance from the path and as we walked closer to the other side of the track, there seemed like lots more people than those that jumped... We crossed under a tunnel and then saw the track was open, so we got to have a walk and took some photos. I did a cartwheel for good measure.
Next we grabbed some drinks to use up all our coins and had a dance as there were DJs playing. We didn't plan to stay long but some how 2 hours later we were still there. It was so so fun, especially with such a diverse crowd. People were dancing, playing limbo with flags and just havong a good time. We met some interesting characters and people who enjoyed our Gunther "no risk, no fun" shirts. We even met some Aussies. It was so nice to have a dance, the second DJ was called Peter Lutz which sounds like Peeter Ups (Liisa's dad) which we laughed at a lot.
We started the final trek home, got some dinner and another drink then headed to sleep after a massive few days.Okumaya devam et

F1 Day 2 - Sprintin and Trekkin

Today we got up and it wasn't actually raining! We got brekky and left fairly early to go see the drivers interviews. The walk was a bit easier and quieter than the first morning. We headed straight to the stage and stood to wait with everyone else.
First out was Mercedes (George!!!) who were very polished as expected but still fun, then it was Erin's dream, the Ferrari boys. They spoke well, although Carlos seems to be in his own world. Next were the Haas and Red Bull boys who were also very polished, but Max was actually cracking some jokes which was nice to see.
We then grabbed some food and coffee, then went back to see the Alpine boys buuut they started speaking French. So we set off on a hike to find an ideal spot for the day, literally we would have walked about 4km to get there. We got a good spot and watched the quali and the F2, it was really exciting to be close to the cars. Then Erin and I set off on a hike to see if we could find a better spot to watch the F1 sprint race. We literally walked for about an hour and sussed out s few spots. We ended up at a high point on the track which had some good views but then it poured down so the race was delayed. We huddled under umbrellas and finally the race started under a safety car. The race was so exciting with Piastri leading for a few laps and eventually coming second. So nice to see him get his first podium and while Hol and I were wearing our Piastri shirts too. There were a lot of exciting moments and incidents as well.
Erin and I got ushered out a different entrance but stumbled upon the red bull party tent that was playing Super Max on blast and had different types of beer which we indulged in. We walked through some treacherous forest and attempted to get back into the track at various places, finally sneaking back in. We then got caught in a bottle neck of people, however there was a speedy but muddy way. Erin braved it in her white Adidas, luckily I had boots as we stepped into quite a few muddy, deep puddles. It was definitely a quicker way though. We finally met up with the others and trekked back to the yurt. We had done 30,000 steps over the day. We grabbed some dinner and drinks then showered before heading off to sleep before race day tomorrow!Okumaya devam et

GezginAll these viewing spots could each be there own FindPenguin location pin drop by the sounds of it. I bet y'all slept the hardest you've ever slept that night after 30,000 steps!!! And muddy ones at that

GezginWhat is this place??? Hahhaha this does not feel like it leads to racecars (unless you were thieving tickets, then I would believe that walking through the forest is the access way)

GezginIt's outside the track where they made us walk! It's literally a forest hahah

F1 day 1 - It always rains in Spa

Today we got up and it was some how still raining. We got dressed and headed to breakfast. As yurt guests we got to have a complimentary bacon sandwich which was a dense bur delicious breakfast. We set off on our trek towards the track which was along a road which was quite busy, however we had our breakfast beers to keep us going. We slowly caught up with more and more people and watched the chaos of people parking. It was like a pilgrimage into the track as we got closer, so many people were waiting to get in.
We finally got in and were in the fan zone which was full of merch, activities and food. We headed for the stage and not long after came out the Alpha Tauri (Danny Ric!!!) and Williams (Walbon!!) teams. They had a quick interview on stage and it was so amazing to see them up so close. We waved the Aussie flag for Daniel to see. Next McClaren came out (Piastri!!!) and the crowd were throwing stroopwaffles up for Lando Norris which was wild. We then headed to buy 'coins' which are obviously the official currency of the Spa GP and grabbed a beer before coming back to see Alonso (Lance Stroll was notibly absent). Next was Alfa Romeo (Bottas!!!) and they were both very personable compare to the other drivers. We then headed to the merch tent, I grabbed a Piastri shirt to support but I think it will be valuable in a few years too. Holly grabbed one too and then Erin got a Carlos Sainz hat. We grabbed more beers and had a great view of the steep part of the track. I made a tough choice between an Albon or Bottas hat, Albons was cooler so he prevailed.
We then walked along the path to find a good vantage point, it was alternating between pouring rain and being clear which made umbrella rangling complicated. We settled on a corner with a good view and enjoyed f2 and f1 quali. It was so exciting seeing the cars zooming around in real life. We saw two of the cars hit the wall (gently) which was exciting.
We walked back with everyone else which was very busy and I was absolutely wrecked after a big day of walking. The dinner line was ridiculously long but we ate and then headed to the shower locker room where one person was on door watch at all times. A shower was so nice after a day of rain. Next was bed and an alarm set to get up early in the morning!Okumaya devam et

deLUXEMBOURG

Today we got up and slowly got ready to leave for the next stop. We bought a bunch of snacks for the yurt and piled everything in the car. Everyone who wasn't driving was definitely squashed but we made it to Luxembourg. The one parking station we were aiming for literally had one space left and then was full, minutes before we arrived so we went to another which was also very busy. Luckily we found a spot pretty quickly. We headed into town, hit tourist information for a map and then found a Thai place to grab lunch at. The Thai was incredible, such big servings and so delicious.
We then went on a walking tour lead by Holly and saw a church, then walked over to the edge of the the hill to see the old town. It was a gorgeous view and the towns walls are still in tack.
Next we headed to decathlon to try by some more wet weather gear as the formula one forecast was very grim. Walked away with some things but we stopped at another shopping centre, grabbing more stuff like gumboots ans umbrellas.
We finally got on the road to Spa towards the yurt and it was raining quite hard the whole way. The drive was through a lot of small towns which were lovely and we slowly got to more and more cars with people clearly attending the formula one.
We found the yurt city and it was a muddy mess already. After checking in, we were lead to our yurt by a poor teen who looked like he'd been through it. After parking the car, we unpacked and embraced the yurt life with our complementary processo. We then headed to dinner which is in a small gazebo but was actually delicious. After we hit the upstairs bar for a few bevs before returning to the yurt for some fireball and a game of cards.
We are prepared (maybe) for a wet weekend at Spa.Okumaya devam et

We love Metz and Metzal

Today we woke up, I went for a light run with Erin and then we cooked some breakfast. Erin and I walked to the tourism office and got a very helpful map before we found a street with a dragon statue. The dragon was slayed by the first priest of the area whom the town is named after, Metz. We walked back and picked up our walking tour leaders, Kate and Liisa. First stop was the cathedral which was the biggest and most grand I've been into. The stained glass windows are 600m² around the church (thanks Liisa for the fact) and were so diverse with so much colour. Next we went over to the free musuem and saw so many sculptures, artifacts and art. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Then we walked down the main street for lunch stopping a pretzel bakery. We each got a savoury and a sweet deliciousness each then sat for a drink at Kangarou Cafe which strangely had no connection to Australia. The waiter also told us "the Kangaroo is just a fun symbol we use" which was highly offensive in my opinion. Next we continued the walking tour, seeing some statues, parks, old buildings and eating our sweet treats. We came back to the apartment for a quick rest, then headed to the main gates of Metz which resembled a castle. We walked down to the river via these great food markets. We found a bar and grabbed a drink, Liisa took the photo of the day and I had a mojito that may have been straight rum. We then searched for an elusive camping chair before heading to dinner.
We ordered drinks and attempted to order dinner, however were told French people don't eat until after 7pm. It was worth the wait though, half had a voulevant and the other had a quiche lorraine platter which was excellent. We were also told bon appetite by a man carrying an open bottle of Rose #winning. We then headed home and watched some Netflix before heading to bed. Last night before the yurt adventure begins.Okumaya devam et

Untourist day

Today we woke up and got ready to leave Strasbourg. We walked back with our luggage to the car in light rain, very unsure if all the luggage would fit. However, the packing gods are on our side and it all fit well with the backseat gals having some lap luggage. We then headed back into town for our walking tour. By then the weather had cleared and it was a really nice day. We waited while drinking our coffee and eating a pastry but noone else seemed to be arriving. Turns out it was pushed back to 10:30 as the guide had missed his train? However the message was sent at 2am leading us to believe he was hungover. We spent the time searching for Primark so the girls could pick up a few more warm clothes and wet gear as the weather has been a bit miserable.
By the time we returned for the walking tour, the rain had also returned. The guide told us to wait 20 mins and come back but we didn't want to wait. So we walked through the pouring rain and decided that was silly, so stopped for a drink. Within 20 mins, the rain had in fact stopped but we had committed to the drinks.
We instead planned our day and changed our plans a little. We got back to the car and after a rainy drive plus a struggle to get petrol we arrived at Nancy. We walked through the town searching for somewhere to eat, when KFC popped out and that was my lunch solved. Erin found a palace, so we walked there in the rain once again. It was beautiful and stunning but the cold and rain really detracted from the view. The sun started appearing as we headed to the movies to watch Barbie. Yes, we caved and went to see the original version with French subtitles. I had an interesting experience with a lady asking me if I could sit lower in the chair as my head was blocking her view... Nonetheless the movie was very good and had lots of important concepts in it. We all really enjoyed it.
Next it was off to the accommodation in Metz and after an impromptu tour of the town (car navigation needs to take a long hard look at itself) we arrived. Then the dreaded question of what to do for dinner. We decided to make some salad and after searching for a grocery store, made a great dinner. It was a less touristy day than expected but a good rainy day.Okumaya devam et

Crepes and Grapes (s/o Holly)

Today we woke up and got ready to head off on a full day wine tour. As soon as we left it started to rain so we all huddled under the cathedral and waited for the tour to start. We met our driver and the others on our tour. The other 3 were Americans and I sat in the back with 2 of them, learning all about them. They were both very lovely. We drove about an hour and stopped at and lookout where you could see down to the villages as the guide talked about how the Alsace region was kept flipping to be Germany then back to France so the identity was a little mixed. Then we had a short drive before reaching the first winery.
It was a great tour with us going into where the barrels are stored and the host explaining lots about where the wine is grown, the regulations in the Alsace region and what predominant wines are grown in the area. It was probably the most factual and interesting wine chat I've been on, topped off by the fact the wine was so nice. Then came the masterpiece though. To show the history they had a movie that played on the barrels which was funny, interactive and informative. 10/10 to that place. We bought some wine and I bought a small mystery gingerbread man filled with liquor. Everyone on the bus took a shot and it was so delicious. The gingerbread man is now the trip mascot.
We then drove for a bit longer and arrived at the next winery which was on the other end of the spectrum. We met Andre and it seemed we were just at his house... We followed him to what looked like a garage and sat at a table for wine tasting. He was a character and tried his best to talk about his wine in English. Highlights the stop at Andres were his in depth cork chat, him also participating in the tasting and his ability to know where all wine in his garage despite it looking very disorganised.
We said farewell to Andre and we have named the glass gingerbread man after him. We jumped in the van to head to Riquewihr, the alleged town that Beauty and the Beast was based on, for lunch. It was such a beautiful town once again. We found a creperie and had lunch then had a wander around. I accidentally had a green like beer which didn't taste like beer. Holly and I went into a Christmas shop that had so much stuff, literally it had a one way walking path and the sides were lined. Then we headed back in the van for the last winery.
This winery was a 'blind' tasting meaning the wines were served in black glasses and we had to rely on all the skills we learnt on the day. We were even given a pen and paper to write our tasting notes down. These wines were not my favourite but we love a game. The host bought the wines out and they had their own 'mystery sock' covering the label. Our guesses were decent and definitely improved by the last few. Then it was time to head back to Strasbourg where the weather was absolutely coming down, we got soaked on our 5 minute walk back to the apartment.
We headed back out for dinner but first we were stopped by the lady next door. The only accurate way to describe her was literally an old ghost. A frail French old lady came out and was loudly exclaiming in french. We attempted to explain we didn't know french and she got more dramatic with her actions but we still were unsure what she was saying. She then reached out to grab Kate on the shoulder, then magically started speaking English asking if we were staying tonight and basically could we be more quiet. We escaped down the stairs but not before Kate had to blow her a kiss... One of the strangest interactions we've had for sure. We had a nice dinner then went to a pub which is the local brewery. We ordered some dessert and one of them was a sweet flammekueche which we paid extra to have them light on fire (less spectacular than it seems). We then walked home and creeped up the stairs so we didn't wake up the ghost demon of next door which was hilarious to watch. The stairs are so old and creaky that it was impossible. Luckily we didn't spot her. Then it was off to bed after a big, fun and interesting day!Okumaya devam et

GezginIs that a drunk walk? and im now editing my comment as i watched the video before i read your recap for the day 😂🤫

GezginErins edits- Andre also passed around a book completely in French for us to read about turning trees into corks. The pictures were all we understood, but he was very excited about his book. Liisa also suspected our tour guide was Andres son, which was why we went to wine garage.

GezginLachlan's edits - "I agree, Mr French man, I'm excited too [about how corks are made]"

GezginYou should see his face, and then he explained to me how corks are made. TBD, pretty neat stuff

Parlez-vous Francais?

Today we woke up and packed up our stuff to head to our next destination, France! Liisa nailed the packing of the car (please see incredible picture). We drove abour 50 minutes and stopped in Colmar which was actually like a Disney town. The buildings were bright and colourful, there was even a small canal in 'little venice'. We went to get brunch at a little cafe and it was a perfect mix of sweet and savoury. There was some kind of wine festival occurring, so naturally we sat and had some wine while there was a violin playing in the main street. We walked around seeing more of the town before discovering we were in the birth town of the creator of the statue of liberty. We made it our mission to visit the Colmar statue of liberty made in his honour. We drove to the landmark only to find it was on the middle of a roundabout... A few quick snaps were taken as we drove along.
We arrived at Strasbourg and climbed the many steps to our accommodation. As we had been warned, sections of the roof were very low so there was some ducking from the taller parts of the gang. Also some questionable stairs and multi level ladder climbs to get to bedrooms. It was a super cute place though. Oh and Holly was also awaiting us at our accommodation. It was soooo good to see her.
Next we headed to a local bar to watch the F1 race in preparation for next week. We had some delicious beers and got laughed at by the bartenders with our attempts at French. It was a great race and a fun way to catch up.
Then we walked through the streets to find somewhere to eat. We ended up at a tex mex place which did delicious burritos and margaritas. We then grabbed some wine and snacks to head back to the accommodation to play some games and catch up. The only other struggle with the apartment was there is no holder for the shower head, so each person tried a new tactic and shared with the gang... We all ended up in bed early as we prep for a full day of wine tasting tomorrow!Okumaya devam et

Drinking our way through Basel

Today we woke up, had some brekky and ventured in to Basel to meet Giuls for coffee and a donut. The donuts were different but good and then Liisa, Kate and Erin also got a little salami sandwich on the side at the little markets that were running in the main square. Next we walked back to Giuls house and jumped in the car to head to the Tierpark which was a free mini zoo!
There were heaps of animals including 3 different goat enclosures, monkeys, 'wild' cats, bison and reindeer. We loved the monkeys. One came right in front of us and was staring right at Giulia. He had his arms folded and looked so so human. One other was trying to crush something and was really throwing his back into it. We all loved the Tierpark.
Then it was time to say goodbye to Giulia and she dropped us back by the river. It was sad to see her go, but I know we'll see each other again. We walked down by the river in search of a bevvy and sat at a table overlooking the river. It was beautiful. We then headed back into town and had a grocery store lunch and a beer which was actually exactly what we all wanted. Took that to the river to eat as well.
Next we went on a walking tour around Basel old town and learnt about the city. From basilisks that guard the city, to a man who they thought 'discovered the town' (not true) but did a naked (magic mike) dance for Cleopatra (maybe true). Along the way, we saw a lost child and guided his mother to find him and ended with a sweet treat from Basel. I somehow ended up holding the plate for the guide...
Then we went to have a spritz drink on the river bur first discovered the Basel Tattoo was on which explains why we'd seen lots of bagpipes and bands all weekend. We enjoyed a spritz and then headed back to the Tattoo 'street' for dinner as they had a variety of stands set up with all different foods. We then walked home but stopped at a brewery right underneath our apartment building. The beers were so good and very Australian craft beer style which is something I've not had in a while. Then we did laundry, played some games and went to bed.Okumaya devam et

Floating along in Basel

Today we woke up, packed up our stuff and headed for a coffee at the much talked about Olives for a morning coffee. Olives was this small but cute little cafe that Liisa found and seems to be the biggest fan of. I enjoyed the coffee but Liisa and Kate later revealed they werent the biggest fans.
We then drove to Basel to meet Giulia! The drive was fine but the city driving and finding parking was a nightmare. We made it after some stressful moments for ol Georgia and then we walked to Giuls house. It was so great to see her! Her apartment was so nice and spacious. She had made brunch for us and we all sat and chatted. Next we walked through the town, seeing all the nice buildings and headed along the river. We then packed all our stuff into a wet bag and jumped into the Rhine. We floated along for about 30 minutes which is something the locals regularly do. It was so cool to see the town by water and the temperature was actually so nice.
We dried off, then got a gelato which was delicious. We all walked back to Giuls house, then I stayed with Giuls while the others headed to check in and explore. Giuls and I caught up some more, watched some trash tv and she cooked dinner for me. It was a lovely chill afternoon. Then I got back to the apartment and played bananagrams with the girls. It sounded like they had a great day too!Okumaya devam et

GezginValuable life lesson from the cafe experience - lower your expectations and you'll be happier in life. If only floating down the river was conducive to photo taking, and also 4D, and maybe I'm just wishing I was just there. That would be great hahah

A day on the lake

Today we all woke up slowly and got ready for the day. We had a good breakfast of coffee, peanut butter and banana on toast before hitting the road to Lucerne. Once again had my star navigator to get me through the city and we made it. We walked around the beautiful lake to the tourist information to suss out what activities we wanted to do for the day. We then went in search of a deli sandwich for Liisa around the old town. We walked over this wooden bridge with flowers all along which was beautiful. We did find a small bakery and Liisa found what she was looking for.
We then headed back to the lake to ride on a pedal boat! All 4 of us could fit on it. Liisa and I jumped on the pedalling first and it wasn't the smoothest process. The boat didn't handle too well at all which was a concern considering there was boats and ferries also in the lake. We enjoyed the views and the sun. We switched pedallers and I even got to enjoy my crossiant on the boat. Kate and Erin had a moment of anxiety returning the boat to the parking, however the lady on the dock kindly hooked us in. Kate said she almost got hooked...
We then returned to the car and headed to Bauen. We detoured to grab a sticker that allows you to use toll roads, but is some how managed police? Then we were back on the road without threat of big swiss fines. We drove again along the lake with full view of the mountains and after some driving through very small towns, very small roads we reached our destination. It was a small little town on a lake with quant houses. Did a 5 minute walk to see all the town, then headed for a drink on the banks of the lake. We watched the ferries come in, a highlight or lowlight depending on your perspective was watching this crewman try and throw the rope around a post. He missed about 5 times before succeeding.
We then got changed and went for a swim. The beaches were not sandy and the rocks were quite sharp. We would have looked like such tourists tip toeing our way to the water, while locals had water shoes on. The water was fresh but we all jumped under. We then had to battle our way out of the water via the rocks. Liisa led Erin out, like Erin was 90 stumbling over the rocks. I wasn't much better, hands were used during the ascent. We laid out and took in the stunning views before heading back to Zurich.
We headed back out to Zurich via the train and went to a beerhall for dinner. It was a chaotic, noisy vibe but the food and the beer were great. Heading back I wanted to go against the gps and get off at a different tram station. Kate was brave enough to come with me, but I chose wrong and we ended up running back for the train. A good burst of exercise for the gals though.
We had such a fun full first day exploring Switzerland!Okumaya devam et

End of the tour, start of gals trip!

Today we woke up after a sleep in, got our luggage repacked and headed to breakfast. There we said godbye to our tour group, everyone seemed a bit emotional to be finishing up which was lovely. Erin and I then walked to Lidl, a grocery store to buy some supplies for our road trip to Switzerland. We grabbed an Uber to the hotel where we picked up our car. It was tricky getting out of the city but i had my trusty navigator Erin guiding me. It was a little stressful but soon we were on the freeway and allowed to do whatever speed I wanted. Didn't go too crazy but did get up to 140km at one point, with some people still zooming past us.
We crossed the border with no issues, just a smile and a wave. Then we drove along this stunning road right by a lake overlooking mountains on the way into Zurich.
We arrived at our accommodation to meet Kate and Liisa. We woke Kate up from a nap and it was so nice to see her. Then we saw Liisa and it was a fabulous reunion. We all caught up then headed to Zurich via the train and a tram lead by tour guide Liisa for dinner. We walked around a bit because everything was so expensive but finally found this random italian place where the waiter struggled to understand Erins request for wine. We then walked along the river and stopped for a drink. Then we headed back after a snack stop at Spar and all headed off to bed.Okumaya devam et

Tour Day 10 - Lake Bled & Salzburg

Special guest appearance- EC for the final day of tour
Hello! Georgia is being the driving hero of the day for the first day of the road trip, so I’ve gotten the call up for the find penguins post!
I (Erin) woke up for a quick morning run back up to the castle before breakfast and getting back on the bus for the last day of the tour. We jumped on the bus and the first stop was Lake Bled, which was a stunning lake in Slovenia. Got some photos and had a walk around the lake. We sat down for a coffee and then realised we had to be back at the bus in 20 minutes and it was a 12 minute walk. Safe to say it was the fastest I’ve ever skulled a coffee but luckily no burnt mouth. Made it back to the bus with 5 minutes to spare, so continuing to rebuild our reputation as the non late girls. The next stop was Salzburg, which is sound of music town. Turns out, not a very popular movie in our tour group. Kriszti our tour leader is not a fan because of the historical inaccuracies, but still tried to get everyone hyped by playing the songs. It really felt like I was the only one who enjoyed it. She pointed out a few of the mountains from the movie as we drove which were really pretty. Georgia reported the soundtrack and the town have not made her to want to watch the movie, so no wins on that front. We were a bit late to Salzburg and they are pretty strict on tour busses so we potentially got fined. When we got to Salzburg we went through the gardens which were stunning, and may have been featured in the movie, but it has been a long time since I’ve seen it, so I can’t confirm. We only had an hour, so we went in search of waffles. Instead Geo found some spaghetti ice cream which was exciting. Jumped back on the bus for the last leg of the journey and managed to not get stopped by border security going back into Germany which Kriszti said was unheard of. Made it back to Munich and went for a final dinner with most of the tour, at a little Italian restaurant. Sat with the guys and chatted about highlights, lowlights and weirdlights on the trip, which was a lot of fun. Walter was a lowlight and cucumber boy was the weird light for me personally. Went back to the hotel and had another drink with a smaller group, which was good fun and then were embarrassingly the first to head to bed at about 11, the oldies stayed up for another drink. Overall, an awesome tour with some amazing places and some very interesting characters met along the way. Definitely will miss Kriszti's local knowledge and the bus beers vibes. But looking forward to potentially finding a salad somewhere that isn’t Central Europe.Okumaya devam et

GezginGeo's Gossip: the border control officer was a hottie and I really wanted him to have to check my passport. We also had a discussion at dinner about the length of time after losing a spouse before it is okay to start dating. The rule we came up with was a day per year you were together i.e 27 years would be 27 days...

GezginOh my goodness you make me proud my darling girl..checking out the hot border control officer has to be up there with highlights of the trip 😜. Not too sure about your dating rule though. And I can see why Erin did the chat today…since you refuse to watch The Sound of Music 🤔😂

GezginDay per year!?!?! Yikes. But also zero years for you so go back and get that hottie mctrottie border control baddie

Day 9 - Graz & Ljubljana

Today we woke up and left Vienna. We drove to Graz for a lunch stop. It was another spectacular town with beautiful buildings. We walked up 260 stairs to this beautiful park, castle and clock tower area overlooking the city and took some photos. We discovered there was a slide that could take you to the bottom, but heard excessive screaming coming from said slide so we just walked back down the steps. Next we walked around to find lunch, we got schnitzel burgers which only one of us enjoyed as idiot me let them put ketchup on Erin's burger...
We jumped back in the bus and headed to Ljubljana in Slovenia. It was 36 degrees when we got off the bus but luckily the room had air conditioning. Our first mission was attempting to buy a drink which is half non alcoholic beer and half isotonic drink (Gatorade) which was made un collaboration with the Slovenian national football team (spoilers: we never found it). We then went on a walking tour around the city, it was absolutely stunning. It was much smaller than the other cities on the itinerary and had such a cosy feel to it. We walked over the dragons bridge, saw the love lock bridge, saw the cheese and unpasteurized milk vending machines and saw the beautiful river. We fell in love with the city very quickly. We walked through a park and saw a smaller castle, then headed back to the river to sit on a barge for dinner. It was lovely sitting and watching the boats, kayakers and paddleboarders go by. We stopped for another drink in old town, then climbed up the mountain to get to the castle hill. Honestly it was the steepest incline I've seen in a while. Once we made it, there was a stunning view across the city and to the mountains. We had some drinks with the castle behind us and the city in front. Definitely one of the most stunning places we've sat and had a drink. We walked around the castle area, finding the vineyard and exercise area. Then headed back to the hotel. We headed to the roof top which was another gorgeous view of the city, and noone else was taking advantage! We could have sat there for hours. We are very sad that we don't have more time to explore this gorgeous town!Okumaya devam et

GezginErin’s edits- when we started the walking tour, geo decided to parkour over a small stone thing and everyone was joking about stacking it and having to call the ambulance. The guide then informed us that has happened before. Then about two minutes later geo decided to walk down a stone ramp rather than the steps like everyone else and almost stacked it again. The guide looked very stressed

Tour Day 8 - Bratislava & Vienna

Today we woke up and left Budapest. We drove to Bratislava for a lunch break and wander around the town. The old town was small but cute. We ended up grabbing a burger and a beer, Marlene and Paul came over and grabbed a beer while we ate. The strangest thing in the town was the UFO tower on top of the bridge which the Soviets made which is now a restaurant. Closely rivalled by a statue of a man peeping out of a manhole which our tour guide Kristzi described in a much more creepy manor (judge for yourself).
We continued on to Vienna which was only a short drive away. We checked in and then met our local guide for a driving/walking tour of the city. We welcomed Walter the walking red flag, as white and ancient as tour guides come. Initially he was cracking a few jokes and explaining about the great public housing system they have in Vienna, and I was hopeful my initial thoughts were wrong. However, when a joke was made regarding a queen having a miscarriage as an 'easy way out' and a comment about seeing Adele on TV before she lost the weight and her being not attractive, I knew it was going to be a long tour.
The city had so many elegant buildings, from palaces, museums and even the parliament. The first place we walked around was a church, however there was a festival going on and there were strong sounds of Olivia Rodrigo coming from the area... Turns out there was a choir singing pop hits. Unholy by Sam Smith was a risky choice but About Damn Time by Lizzo was a personal favourite.
We then walked to main areas like the parliament, palace, through a rose garden and came out in the main centre of town. All with Walter's sexist and interesting commentary. It was also very hot so the group were struggling with the heat. Our guide Kristzi was getting slightly annoyed with the complaints which was funny to see. We ended up in an old storage cellar for a traditional Austrian meal. Unfortunately for us, we were last to arrive so had little say in where we sat. We were with 2 South African ladies, who were a little patronizing regarding our ability to travel the world at such a young age and used any conversation as a way to speak about South Africa. The schnitzel was nice though.
The other interesting thing about the restaurant was that the waitstaff were the most stressed individuals we've ever seen. Kristzi had warned us about 'Austrian' effeciency of waitstaff and how they try and get you in and our very quickly. Seeing it in action was a different story, we watched Lukas the waiter chug glasses of water while running to tables. We've heard he refused to get people drinks as he was too overwhelmed and busy. Erin and I made sure to stack our plates so he could quickly retrieve them. Honestly that man may have an ulcer.
Next we wandered around Vienna and went to a rooftop bar that was suggested by my friend. It was an eventful time. First we went up in the elevator with others and none of us got off the right floor, so we went back to the ground floor... Finally we got off at the top and walked up stairs to a beautiful bar in the middle of Vienna. We watched the sunset and the views were stunning. I then made a mistake of pointing at a glass belonging to an interesting and creepy guy who approached us, begging us to stay multiple times. Luckily we were saved by our waiter... (Please ask for more detail in person, I attempted to write the story but it was too cringe to retell). We then finished the night at an Australian bar which wasn't too over the top actually. Then we met with our tour group who had returned from the classical concert which majority seemed to enjoy. It was a big day but we really got an experience of Vienna!Okumaya devam et

GezginErin’s edits: quite the day. Walter finished his historical tour of Vienna at a lingerie shop for some reason. My favourite Lucas moment was when another waiter approached him to see if they had any room for a table of three and he spun and yelled at the poor young waiter not today!!! Not today!! And stormed off. When we stopped for a bathroom break, we had to pay to get in and there were turnstiles attached to a card machine. There was also a guy sitting there manning the machine. As we were coming out a lady was crawling under a turnstile to attempt to use the bathroom for free and being yelled at by the toilet guard to stop. She kept crawling, got up and went to the bathroom, not acknowledging the yelling guard.

Tour Day 7 - Budapest

Today we woke up and I decided to go running with Erin due to the amount of sights in Budapest. We ran to Margaret Island which is connected to the city via a bridge. It was a beautiful morning. The island is MASSIVE, with a swimming pool, mini zoo, small football stadium and Erin even ran past an outdoor cinema. Erin loved the run around the river and I enjoyed a walk around to see a giant lego lion. We got breakfast then headed off to a walking tour of the city. Our guide was funny and passionate about giving good tips for visiting the city. We met a lovely German woman called Annie, who was around our age and travelling by herself. We got to know her on the tour while seeing beautiful buildings in Budapest. Highlight of pettiness was seeing the communist Russian monument that has been left by the Russians (in an agreement with the Hungarians) right by the American embassy. The Americans have erected statues of 2 presidents standing quite close as a retaliation move we think.
The tour ended at the parliament building which is an absolutely stunning building and puts parliament house to shame. We then walked to the shoes on the Denue which is a memorial to the Jews who were killed and pushed into the river during the Nazi period. They were told to leave their shoes as leather was valuable. Just a sad but fitting tribute.
We then headed to get Langos for lunch, which is fried bread recommended with sour cream, cheese and garlic. We actually met our new friend Annie there and had lunch together. Next we headed to the House of Terror which is a museum about the rule of terror by both the Germans and the Soviets with a heavy focus on the Soviet occupation. The 'house' was the 'headquarters' of both these regimes and we even got to see places where people were tortured and wrongly imprisoned. It was a lot of information and very emotional. We then decided to head back to the hotel, and outside was Budapest Pride march! There was bright colours, music and we got to walk along for a short period. It was awesome to see.
We freshened up and headed to the ruins bar which was a massive old building that has about 6 bars inside and now covered in graffiti. It had a super cool vibe and even had some market stalls inside. Then we headed towards our river cruise, got lost and had a drink in a questionable bar.
The river cruise was very fun, we sat with Marlene and Paul who after hearing about the wine debarcle bought us a corkscrew... We had great food, great wine and saw the city at night. It was beautiful. Everyone got along really well, there was a large glass of grapa being passed around to drink which helped... Everyone has been so nice and have such interesting stories, it has made the trip really interesting.
We walked back to the hotel, Paul has smuggled white wine out for us and we chatted with 2 guys we hadn't spoke to much. They are a gay couple and live in America, they told us that the pride march today was actually illegal as kids under a certain age cannot be exposed to LGBTQI+ ideas. It was a good conversation and we even considered going out with them but as soon as we hit the hotel it was bed time. We didn't drink the white wine either. Don't tell Paul...Okumaya devam et

Tour Day 6 - Banská Bystrica & Budapest

Today we woke up jumped on the bus and said goodbye to Krakow. We had been warned that today's journey was going to be mainly on smaller roads so the trip would be longer. We drove through the Slovenian mountains and stopped in a small town called Banská Bystrica for a lunch break. It is mainly a ski resort town and has heaps of water activities and hiking during the summer. The old town was beautiful and it is wild that some of the buildings were built in 1303. We got a coffee and a fried dough tube filled with jam which was delicious. Erin spoke to her family while I walked by a church which was nice. We jumped back ok the bus and drove a few more hours before entering Hungary. At the petrol station stop, I grabbed a beer called a Meggy which made me chuckle. We hit Budapest and did a driving tour of the main sights. The main square had military vehicles and a helicopter as it is a military graduation tomorrow. We drove to Buda Castle which is no longer a castle and walked to the top of the viewing platform to the most incredible view of the city looking back to the Pest side.
Finally we drove into town and stopped for dinner. We sat with Marlene and Paul who we met on the first day and once again they were so lovely. We chatted about everything and they even invited us to stay with them if we were ever in Florida. Paul made us take a traditional Hungarian shot, that is described by some locals as 'medicine'. It literally burnt all the way down my body, it was poison. The dinner was lovely but it was so hot, it made it harder to enjoy. Then finally we walked back and went to bed, another long bus day but Budapest looks amazing!!Okumaya devam et

Tour Day 5 - Krakow

Today we got up and had breakfast, then got ready for a morning walkong tour with the group. The guide was hilarious and very enthusiastic about the city of Krakow. I personally was waiting for someone to get hit by a car or a bike as it was incredible how unaware the group was. We saw the main town square, former city walls and walked up to the castle area. It was beautiful city once again along a river.
Erin and I went to the cathedral within the castle which houses many tombs of important people within Polish history as well as being a beautiful place of worship. It was definitely a highlight of the day, including a climb to a bell which if you touch you'll allegedly be married within the next year. Stay tuned for that update.
We emerged and it was raining so we quickly walked back towards the hotel to have lunch at a Pierogi cafe. Erin tried to stop me from over ordering bur I didnt listen so we had more than enough of the delicious dumplings, including dessert ones. We rolled out of there, grabbed my rain jacket and headed for a beer at a bar. We were scheduled to go for a walking tour but with the weather decided against it instead we caught a tram to a museum.
The museum was a pharmacy which was a part of the ghetto quarter, where the Nazi's had originally forced Polish jews in the area to live. The museum was interesting, with the employees seeming uninterested and it being unclear at first who ran the pharmacy. There was a lot of information and reading, not the most interactive musuem but heaps of amazing stories of things that occurred in the area. Next we walked to the jewish ghetto wall and then made our way to the jewish quarter of shops. We stopped at a craft brew house and I had a delicious gelato sour beer.
Next we walked back towards the river to see the dragon statue. We attempted to grab a drink by the river on a boat but it looked closed and when we approached the door all the employees were sitting and/or playing frisbee. We waited for rhe dragon statue to breathe fire as we'd been told it was every 5 minutes... However after about 10 minutes it hadn't stirred, so we missed that. We walked through the town markets and went to watch the trumpet player who plays every hour st the church. We also missed seeing him play as he didnt come to the window we were standing near...
Then we went for dinner at a traditional Polish place. It was very unusually decorated but the food was delicious. We then grabbed some snacks and alcohol for very cheap and headed back to the hotel. Erin's wine looked like blackcurrant juice and allegedly tasted the same, so she went to grab another bottle. Unfortunately for her this bottle had a cork... We had an early night especially early for sad no wine girl.Okumaya devam et

Tour Day 4 - Driving to Poland

Today was another early start and we jumped on the bus headed for Poland. It was a quiet and snoozy coach ride. We stopped for lunch at a Czechia shopping centre which is very similar to Australian shopping centre food courts but the menu is all in Czech. We did a lap and asked a few tour members what they ate. One couple got liver accidentally which spooked me. However Erin went with sushi and I miraculously got chicken fried rice. We got back on the bus after I took a picture of the sign showing you can't bring your pig into the centre. We drove again for a while and our guide talked about the Holocaust as we were headed to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
We got there and it was busy but we had our own tours organised. There was a lot of security to get through then we met our guide who was lovely. It was such an intense experience seeing the camp artifacts, photos and hearing the stories of the atrocities that happened. There was two sites and they were both overwhelming but incredible to be able to experience. We both felt so emotionally drained and it was interesting to see other tour members reactions. It really reminds me of how lucky we as as Australians to be able to travel and live so freely, but also makes me sad that humans around the world still live in fear of a similar situation happening to them.
We jumped back on the bus, watching some episodes of selling sunsets to repair the spirits. Finally after a long day we arrived at the hotel and had dinner. We sat next to a mother and son pair from Canada. Darlene told us she was 82 and I was honestly geniunely shocked, she looks bloody amazing and is so active. They were so lovely. We got back to our room and went to sleep quickly.Okumaya devam et

Tour Day 3 - Prague

Today we woke up and grabbed some breakfast before jumping on the bus and heading to the castle district of Prague. One of the more quiet guys on the tour asked a couple of us if we wanted to try 'holy water'. We were all very confused but watched as he pulled out a ziplock bag with a coles plastic water bottle full of a clear liquid. We offerred for people to smell it before offering us a sip out of the lid. Turns out 'holy water' is 52% alcohol made out of fermented grapes. So that really woke us up.
We walked from the castle district down to the astronomical tower to watch the performance on the hour. Highlight is a skeleton ringing a bell. Then found a place for coffee on the water which had stunning views. We then joined our free castle walking tour. We caught the tram up to the castle and then explored the surrounding areas before arriving at a non-traditional yellow palace looking building. Our guide got us a great view of the changing of the guard, which was incredible. The precision around it was amazing. We then went into the cathedral which took 500 years to build and includes a stained glass window sponsored by an insurance company. We had another 90 mins walking around the grounds, we saw a statue that we called Pissing Man 2 (see yesterdays post) and back to the Charles bridge. It was a great tour.
Next we headed to a pub for a light lunch and a beer, then to an hour river cruise with coffee and cake. The cheesecake was delicious and made me tolerate the cruise more.
Then we went to the Pilsner Urquell immersive experience, which was a tour of how they make this czech pilsner. It was a tour with headphones and the headphones are triggered in each room by sensors. We ended by trying the beer. I tried the Mlíko which is 7/8 foam, 1/8 beer meant to give the beer a sweet taste. It was interesting to say the least.
We headed back to the hotel and got ready for a traditional dinner with folk dancing. The dinner was great but the best part was the all you can drink beer. Paul, who has become our drinking dad kept telling the servers to give us more beer and everyone was enjoying the Aussie girls drinking a tonne of beer only 2L. The dancing and music was so entertaining. Such talented people! We got suckered by the photographer and bought the souvenir photo.
It was a very busy, full on day but we had a great time.Okumaya devam et
