    Bishop Auckland

    17. august 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Stayed on Meadow Farm site - a basic one - with a very helpful owner. The site was a working small farm and we were sharing with animals notably a miniature pig which seemed to have escaped its pen and free range chickens of all shapes and sizes.
Cycled into the town which is a showcase for out of town shopping centres - the high sreet which is very long has every other shop boarded up and 2 miles away all the majors are in the new developments.

Kynren was brilliant - we cycled in to the site - all staff very friendly and the show it self a true spectacular.

Walked along the beach to Saltburn and visited the Tees Barrage and white water rafting site. A bit of proper engineering there.Les mer

    Knaresborough

    21. august 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Kingfisher site at Knaresborough - very peaceful, and set around 2 lakes.
Walked into Knaresbrough for the Wednesday Market - the town was buzzing and the small market one of the best we had seen for a while.
At one stall we heard one chap, when buying some fabric, utter "Aye, I don't want owt fancy"
and another picked up a remnant priced at £3.80 and boldly asked the stallholder "Will you tek 2 pound for this?" Confirmation that we were in Yorkshire.
Knaresborough is a beautiful town set high up above the River Nidd
Visited Mother Shipton's Cave and the petrifying well which was interesting.
Following day we cycled into Knaresborough and then on to Harrogate - quite hilly, but we found a cycle route back which took us along a flat cycle path. Another foraging opportunity not missed by K - we filled our 2 water bottles with large juicy blackberries.
These are two delightful towns, which we will return to at some point. Weather now has an autumnal feel to it, but still with plenty of sunshine.

    Leyburn

    24. august 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Bank holiday weekend and weather cooling down. Arrived at Lower Wensleydale Caravan and motorhome site and chose a pitch at high level. The site is located in an old quarry and had been described to us as quirky. We loved it, especially enjoying the wildlife wandering around - loads of ducks, rabbits and even a peacock.
Visited Leyburn Market on Friday and walked up The Shawl [a 2 mile stretch along a limestone ridge] to see the views from the top. Beautiful scenery even with the rain squalls running through.
Visited Richmond on Saturday to meet Karen's family and had a look round the Castle prior to their arrival. The 12 mile drive from Leyburn to Richmond was truly stunning, with the most beautiful countryside on both sides. Richmond was not too busy, so we managed to park Hazel with no trouble at all. Everyone appeared to be visiting the Wensleydale show at Leyburn instead of the weekly market at Richmond.
Nice lunch in Grandma's Kitchen then back to Leyburn for an evening meal in the sunshine with us all.
Redcar on Sunday morning to help with some high level pruning in Margaret and Don's garden. We have told Don that he must not climb on garage roofs to prune shrubs now that he is 87 years old!!!!

    Wallasea

    27. august 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We travelled south to start following the sun now the summer is back endish.
Stopped off in Walthamstow to meet with Stew and Em, have a cuddle with Jemima, and to pick up Magnus who we took to the seaside for a few days.
Magnus had great fun talking to us non stop for four days, he greatly enjoyed the site, footie with grandpa, making a lego set and the play park.
We went to Southend one wet morning to have a look at the Sealife centre and then spent the afternoon on the beach when the sun came out.
We took the ferry across to Burnham on Crouch so we could do some crabbing. Magnus very amused to see us catch a bucket full.
A bit of foraging again - more blackberies and Magnus helped by picking one which he was very pleased about.
When we needed our ears resting The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle DVD did the trick for a little while.
Bad day for Hazel when white van man trashed our offside wing mirror. Taped it and will organise repair on retur to UK

    Honfleur

    2. september 2018, Frankrike ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Crossed the channel on bright sunny day - sea flat calm
We travelled to Honfleur after a slight detour to St Omer
Cycled into Honfleur and were reminded that the French have a great pride in their towns and cities. The town was beautiful and buzzing with people in restaurants all around the harbour. We walked along the Seine to get a view of the Pont de Normandie which is quite spectacular.
Cycled to Beuzeville up a long hill to see the typically French market and enjoyed the 7k free wheel back to our site.
Managed a bit of sun worship by the site pool and enjoyed planing our route south.

    Saumur

    5. september 2018, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

The sun went out in Honfleur so we moved south to Saumur on the Loire. The river is looking very dry.
We found a very nice and peaceful site (Huttopia) situated at the top of the valley side within a vineyard only 6k from Saumur. We enjoyed it so much we stayed for two additional nights.
We cycled into Saumur on Thursday for a look see and to view a municipal site we had previously stayed at one night on our way back from the south. The 50m pool had fallen into decay and a new small leisure pool installed instead. We then cycled up the Loire for a few miles on the left bank before returning to our site via the sharp hill to the top of the valley.
Friday saw A take out the road bike for a morning ride down river nearly as far as Angers all along the tourist route which was very enjoyable. K stayed at base to do some sewing in the sunshine.
Saturday - cycled back to Saumur to look at the market which was very busy. Mussels were selling fast so we got some for evening meal. Spent the afternoon in the warm sun chilling by and swinmming in the fabulous pool.

    La Dordogne

    9. september 2018, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

4 nights in the Dordogne where the weather was very hot and sunny. 33 degrees and pure blue skies -reminiscent of the many hot days we've had in England this year. We drove through beautiful countryside passing very familiar towns and villages from our numerous visits to France in previous years.
Lovely quiet site on the right bank of the river 10 miles west of St Foy La Grande
Cycled into the town along country lanes, through apple orchards and vineyards and next to the river. Fruit hanging by the thousands in the process of being picked.
Made good use of the swimming pool, which was refreshingly cool and very welcome.
Drove into Bergerac to the Wednesday market - another beautiful town by the river. Bought some sun dried prunes amongst other produce direct from growers at market.
The site pool is excellent and in a sun trap - very quiet as in last week of the site's season.
    Sewing and cycling Thursday morning.

    Biscarrosse Plage

    14. september 2018, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We spent two nights here in Landes so we could experence the savage coast. The sea was quite benign during our stay- winds were light and and the weather sunny, lots of kite surfers and surfers in the sea.
We cycled through to Biscarosse bourg for a mooch on Saturday and enjoyed a lovely ride along the side of the lake and through the forest back to the beach.

We loved this area, we will return to look at the coast further south sometime, but we wanted to get to Spain so moved on.
