    Munich Day 4

    June 21, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Our last day in Europe, it started slow with a sleep in. Once we had breakfast we got ready and wandered the streets and checked out the train station we will be leaving from tomorrow to make sure we know what we are doing.

We then had lunch at Emmi’s Kitchen which was delicious. It’s been very hot in Munich but it was nice sitting in the shaded garden. We looked through the market again and made our way home to do some packing and cleaning before we headed to the Residenz, an old palace (it was bombed in WW2 but reconstructed). It was massive, and felt like a crazy maze. It was very hot in there. With the ticket we could also see the treasury which had some great gems in there and then saw a beautiful old theatre which was cool.

We walked back home to refresh before dinner. We walked out of the old town to a vegan restaurant called Max Pette and it was soooo good. The perfect meal on our last day, a big salad and lemon drink.

We walked to the main square again and briefly saw a pop punk band playing on a temporary stage — they were very cheesy, one of the guitarists had a fire shooting guitar and helmet.

Once home we completely packed and cleaned up as we have to leave early to train it to the airport. We are sad to be leaving, but it’s going to be really nice to be home and in our own bed.

    Munich Day 3

    June 20, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Today Tegan had class so Steve went out and wandered the streets. Once Tegan finished class we went and got sandwiches from Planty sandwiches which were delicious 🤤 we headed home to shower and decided to do the Rick Steves Munich walking tour.

We began in the main square Marienplatz and walked for over 2 hours seeing all the major sites and learning about the history of Munich. We saw St Peter’s Church, Viktualienmarkt, the Jewish synagogue, Asam church, sendlinger Strasse, Kaufingerstrasse, Frauenkirche, Dalayr Delicatessen, Platzl, Hofbrauhaus, Maximilianstrasse, Max John Platz, residenz and landed near the English garden, which is a massive park with a river flowing through it. We walked along the river the saw the artificial surfing area, and then came to the area of the river where people were swimming. We walked a bit further and noticed that lots of people were floating down the river (which moves pretty quickly) and thought it looked like lots of fun but we weren’t completely convinced yet. We kept walking to the Chinese Tower in the middle of the gardens and had a beer, pretzel, and raspberry magnum at the big beer garden and reminisced on our trip.

Steve then decided he wanted to do the river swim so Tegan waited near the end and Steve went and jumped in the river and floated all the way down. It was surprisingly strong but so much fun. After a long walk home in wet clothes (for Steve) we got ready to go out for dinner but ended up just getting sushi from the place downstairs and it was pretty good.

We went for a relaxing walk after dinner, just before the storm hit. Our second last full day was a very good one!

    Munich Day 2

    June 19, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌩️ 28 °C

Today we had a nice relaxing morning in our apartment. We headed out for lunch at 1:30pm to a cafe where we ate a lovely lunch in their garden. It was a great spot and we stayed for a while.

We then walked through the market square where there is a beer garden and all types of different market stalls. It was pretty quiet after a big weekend of celebrating Munich.

At home we rested and Tegan did some uni work to prepare for class the next day. Steve went out and got beers at the local supermarket (Steve had been planning on heading to Andechs Monastery, a brewery 40 mins out of Munich — it doesn’t look like we’ll get there so he got their beers from the supermarket instead) which is the biggest in Munich inner city and came home to read. Later we went back to the supermarket to get some dinner supplies.

We had a nice quiet night in with reading and uni work.

    Munich Day 1

    June 18, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌩️ 28 °C

We woke up and left Nuremberg and was on a train to Munich at 10:30am. We are happy this is the last time that Steve has to drag majority of our luggage to the train station! While we are sad that our trip is coming to an end, we are looking forward to being in our own beds and resting.

We arrived in Munich with no delays and walked 18 minutes to our accommodation which is in the heart of the city. There was lots of things happening while we walked and when we went out for lunch we learnt that it is Munich’s birthday weekend celebrations. There were lots of people dressed in traditional clothes, market stalls, beer and stages around the city. It was buzzing.

We headed back home for a quick rest after lunch and could hear a live band playing nearby. Tegan had to do some uni work so Steve went out and found the stage — it was a German band that seemed to be relatively popular. A bunch of older folk were dancing and singing along, the atmosphere was pretty fun!

We then watched some of the dogs game and had pizza for dinner before heading back down to the stage to watch the next band play. They were older and played mainly covers of hits from the 60s and 70s. We strolled around a little and then back home to watch the rest of the game before bed.

    Nuremberg Day 4

    June 17, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today we relaxed in the morning before heading to the Documentation Centre of the Nazi party rallies. It was a heavy day reading and visiting sites from where the rallies took place.

We got back to town and had a dirty chai to pick us up, then headed home to rest before dinner. Steve ducked out to grab some Lebkuchen, a gingerbread type thing that is made in Nuremberg. It tasted pretty much like gingerbread to us, but glad we tried it.

There is a guy in the old town that has been busking since we’ve been there and we swear he only plays one song, every time we pass him it’s always the same line he’s singing. Not sure what the deal is there.

We went out for dinner at Kaspar, a place we had lunch at a few days ago. They do some nice veggie curries, which we felt like we needed after only snacking on a bowl of chips for lunch.

After dinner we walked along the river towards the old town walls. You can walk along most of the border of the town through the old moat which was a pretty cool experience — the walls are incredibly high in some areas and it’s now a nice green space.

Once we reached the top of town we left the moat and went to the square where everyone hangs out in the evenings. We had a drink there and watched the fire twirling guys. One guy hit himself in the face with the end of his stick and it looked like it hurt him a little, but he kept going.

Once we realised it was nearly 10pm we decided to head home — tomorrow is our last moving day and we needed to do a bit of packing after spending four nights here.

    Nuremberg Day 3

    June 16, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Today we went to Bamburg, a lovely little town 40 minutes away that has a brewery that do unique smoked beers. The train station here is huge, so we gave ourselves plenty of time to find the platform.

Bamburg is a stunning little town with heaps of medieval architecture. Each place we’ve been has an old part of town which is unique and beautiful. The town hall in Bamburg is in the centre of a bridge with beautiful artwork on the outside. You’ll see in the photos above. We headed up to the castle area which was massive and cars were able to drive up there. The footpath and car path look very similar. We walked around the garden which was a mini maze. The scent of the garden was divine, the flowers were full of fragrances.

We walked into the big church which was pretty cool as well and then headed to the brewery where Steve enjoyed some smokey beers. Tegan wandered around town and did some window shopping. The sky began to turn so we headed back to the train station and back to Nuremberg.

Back in Nuremberg we had a dirty chai which is chai with a shot of coffee and it was delicious. We’ve never had anything like it. We came back home to relax a little and then went out for dinner at the Vietnamese restaurant again which was yummy. We strolled around town — it’s crazy it doesn’t get completely dark until 10pm. We are in for a rude awaking when we head back home.

    Nuremberg Day 2

    June 15, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Today we enjoyed a sleep in and relaxing morning before meeting our tour guide for a 2 and a half hour tour around town. We saw churches, monuments, the castles and surrounding walls — the old town is completely surrounded by a moat which you can walk around. We plan on doing that while we’re here. We also learnt about the sad history of the nazi regime beginning and ending here with most of the old town being bombed and most of it being rebuilt, with just a few streets of original buildings.

After the tour we sat in the market square and ate lunch before picking up our books and finding a cafe to read. We strolled along the streets until we arrived home and had some downtime before getting dinner and walking back to enjoy an early night of reading :)

    Nuremberg Day 1

    June 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Today we left Regensburg and caught the train to Nuremberg, which thankfully was on time and a smooth journey. We walked 8 minutes from the enormous train station to our accommodation and struggled to get into our accommodation. We weren’t able to check in straight away so we left our bags in lockers and went out for Vietnamese for lunch to kill some time. The food was delicious and we devoured it. We then walked around the streets of the old town and it is just gorgeous.

We went home for a rest and Tegan decided to do some reading and uni work while Steve went to find some breweries and walk around town.

We ate yummy falafels for dinner and went for an evening stroll through town. It is a beautiful place and we are keen to do a walking tour to learn more about Nuremberg. In the Second World War this was the most bombed place in Germany.

    Regensburg Day 2

    June 13, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Tegan had class this morning at 10am, so after a nice sleep in Steve went down to the supermarket and picked up some smoothies and muesli bars to get us through the morning. Steve then went on a walk around town until Tegan was done with class at 11:30am. We got ready and went out for brunch at Malefiz cafe, which did some really nice breakfast food (although the poached eggs weren’t quite at Melbourne level, they were only very barely cooked).

We then headed to the train station to make our way to Kelheim, where we were planning on catching a boat to Weltenburg, an old monastery/brewery combo. We had to change from a train to a bus to the boat and it took almost 2.5 hours, but the boat section of it was quite beautiful.

We arrived at Weltenburg and sat down in a nice beer garden and ordered some drinks and giant pretzels. We spent about an hour and a half there enjoying the atmosphere before making the move back to the boat dock.

The way back was downstream, and it made a massive difference - on the way there the boat trip was 50 mins, but on the way back it was just 20 mins. We had some luck with the connecting bus and train as well, and we were back in Regensburg an hour sooner than we thought we might have been. We had dinner at a lovely Vietnamese restaurant.

    Regensburg Day 1

    June 12, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today is a travel day. We could probably have done with another day in Salzburg so we decided to make the most of the morning we had left: we got up early and headed to the castle for a view of the city. We walked and got some breakfast on the way and caught the cable car up as we had about 15mins to see. There were only 6 people on it and we all made it to the tower within minutes. The view from the top is breathtaking. A 360 degree view where you can see Salzburg and the surrounding mountains. Steve was saying that no one tried to attack the castle because it was so impressive and intimidating and I believe it. It is huge and is like a maze. You could spend half a day here but we only had 20 minutes. On the way home we grabbed a coffee and headed home to pack and made our way to the station.

After our last train ride we were really sceptical of the German trains system and didn’t think it would leave on time. But fortunately it did and we had seats this time for our 2 hour journey. We had a 20 minute stop over in Munich before catching the connecting train to Regensburg. We weren’t so lucky with seats but we were able to get them near the bike station on the train.

We made it to Regensburg on time and checked in. It’s the first place that doesn’t have an elevator so Steve carried the luggage up 4 flights of stairs. He is the best! Our room is beautiful and private with a huge bathroom.

We headed out for lunch to a vegan/vegetarian burger place that was delicious and walked along the river to explore the city. As we crossed the bridge and turned around we saw the main church of Regensburg and it is much bigger than we expected. It reminded us of the churches in Barcelona. Inside is incredible. We walked through the streets lined with gorgeous houses. This place has a whole old town area that is UNESCO listed. The houses/buildings are so cute and colourful everywhere you look.

Tegan had some uni work to do so Steve headed out to a beer garden to enjoy some, yep you guessed it, beers. We then met up for dinner at a Mexican restaurant which was also delicious. It’s crazy how fast our trip has gone. We wish we could start it all over again!
