    In Turkiye’s green and pleasant land

    We wake before 6am after a wet night to the bleating of a large flock of sheep and goats that are passing the tent. Today we have the remaining 600m of climb to polish off, and then will descend into the next town of Muş with some afternoon time to clean up and catch up before our next leg.
    Despite a gloomy and wet forecast we have sunshine and clouds and views to high snow-covered mountains. We pass more herds of sheep and cows, military checkpoints, and nomadic shepherd tents. Once over the pass the scenery shifts. A big flat plain below with mountains in the distance. And it is so green. Not just bits of green but thoroughly green. We had not expected this of Turkey.     Muş to mud

    Muş est une agglomération (130 000 hab.) assez récente, le centre est constitué d'immeubles de 6-10 étages, adossée sur une montagne encore enneigée. Nous avons trouvé un bon hotel et pouvons nous reposer un peu. Il pleut beaucoup pendant la nuit.

    L'histoire, mais pas l'endroit, se souvient qu'en 1910 la population était partagée 50-50 entre kurdes et arméniens. Ces derniers furent tous déportés en 1915 dans le désert syrien où la plupart périrent dans des conditions indescriptibles. Il y a encore une minorité arménienne dans le nord de la Syrie.

    Cent mètres après notre départ, énorme orage... nous nous abritons dans une boulangerie où on nous offre abri, çai, pain chaud, et un moment de bonheur odorant. Il y a un tas de bois en vrac sur le trottoir devant la boulangerie, qui est située sur l'avenue Atatürk, le coin chic de Muş.

    Nous nous débrouillons pour éviter un autre orage en début d'après midi à grands coups de pédales, et nous engageons dans une large vallée qui s'élève doucement vers le col où nous espérons passer la nuit. L'orage menace encore. Où s'arrêter? Nous franchissons les derniers lacets à 13%, triomphants... et finissons par planter la tente par une averse torrentielle dans un champ hyper-boueux.     Mud glorious mud… and Chai

    Our day starts and ends with mud.

    After extricating ourself from the campsite mud, just around the corner 3 aggressive sheep dogs make for a very shaky start to the day.

    The scenery is green, beautiful, mountainous and empty. Today we will work our way around a large reservoir on the Euphrates. At the dam it is time for Chai - smiles and a warm welcome to cheer us up. The weather is mixed but we dodge the heavy showers once more enjoying the ride high above the reservoir shores.

    At 2 it is time to collect some water. The lady next door to the tap invites us in for chai with the family.

    On the road ahead a small landslide has completely removed the road. We push the bikes up through the field above and around. Its no mean feat. The land is very wet and very muddy - and so are we and the bikes. Another session to extract shoes and tyres and then onwards and downwards to another large green plain with a wide meandering river.    Read more

    Sourires dans la tempête

    Peut-être une des plus belles et plus dures de notre route, cette journée commence par un lever de soleil sur l'Euphrate. À 1500m d'altitude c'est déjà un cours d'eau puissant, qui "fume" dans l'air froid de la nuit.

    Nous montons de plus en plus en altitude (et vers le nord) et le sommet du jour est à 2353m. Qu'y trouverons nous? De la neige, du soleil, une vue extraordinaire?

    Après un ballade de 8km de chemin de terre dans la campagne, nous arrivons dans un petit bourg avec deux mosquées et un centre marchand très actif. Nous refusons de nombreuses invitations à boire le thé et profitons du soleil pour avancer.

    Le jour avance aussi et surprise, surprise, voici un orage avec pluie et vent, violents et glacials... et plus personne pour nous inviter! Quand finalement, à travers nos lunettes embuées, cette silhouette apparait, agitant ses bras pour nous inviter, nous acceptons.

    Nous sommes trempés, transis. Que dire de cet intérieur si propre, ces tapis partout, ce déjeuner servi sur le sol, les grandes galettes de pain (texture tortilla mexicaine) que l'on déchire pour se servir dans le plat? Un plat de pommes de terres fondantes avec poivrons, tomates, poulet, du beurre sans doute, des onions... délicieux. Tout produit maison, chez ces paysans si généreux. Le plus jeune des trois garçons s'interesse vraiment à ce qui se dit, la maman nous rejoint timidement, le père Menduh est très fier. Il nous fait part des vexations que subissent les kurdes.... en particulier l'interdiction de parler la langue kurde, accès fermé aux emplois d'état, etc..
    C'est choquant, mais aussi semble idiot: la Turquie n'a sûrement pas besoin de ça!

    Il est bien difficile de se dire adieu! Nous espérons, sans trop y croire, qu'un, l'autre, ou toute la famille viendra un jour chez nous. Whatsapp échangés, nous reprenons la route le coeur serré.

    L'orage nous suit de peu jusqu'au sommet.... nous y rejoint et s'y déchaine. Suivent 12km de progression très difficile, vent de travers, pluie glaciale et grêle, les mains gelées, les muscles tétanisés. Nous arrivons en état de choc dans un hotel fort médiocre, froid et décrépi, douche tiédasse, prix surfait. Par bonheur ils nous commandent le diner, qui est apporté dans notre chambre.    Read more

    The marvellous descent

    Sometimes one’s body rebels. Alice’s decided that it wasn’t going anywhere despite being a nice day. Luckily there was a great view across the mountain plain from the hotel and Alain was not too difficult to persuade to pause and catch up on penguins.

    The next day, our legs are willing to cooperate. We have just a little more climbing up through wide mountain plains with fresh snow on the surrounding peaks, bright blue skies and great visibility. Then comes an unexpectedly marvellous descent through a dramatic rocky winding valley. It takes longer than expected as we keep stopping to take photos.

    We turn off the main road and find ourselves on a narrow muddy cow track. Still, it’s rather beautiful and luckily not too long. Then its small roads through little villages. In the villages there are walls and mounds of dried cow-dung-bricks and areas of drying dung - we assume it’s for winter fuel. The villages are typically a mix of old stone buildings with grassed roofs (which appear abandoned) and newer houses with bright red or blue metal roofs.    Read more

    Les aventuriers... du vélo

    À Horasan, nous trouvons un hotel. Nous remarquons aussi que nous sommes sur la ligne de chemin de fer ERZURUM-KARS. Elle continue vers l'Arménie, puis Tbilisi en Georgie, d'où l'on peut rejoindre la Russie par STOCHI. Pour un Aventurier du Rail, c'est excitant!

    (Erzurum était une ville arméniene importante, siège du consulat des USA en Arménie... jusqu'en 1915, évidemment :-(. C'est maintenant, entre autre, une station de ski, et la capitale de l'Anatolie de l'Est. Nous n'y sommes pas passés.)

    Cette voie ferrée, nous la quittons à Harosan et pédalons par un temps variable, vers le nord, Ardahan et la Géorgie. Au détour d'un virage nous arrivons nez-à-nez avec un chateau impressionnant, en ruines, perché sur de hautes falaises. Epoustouflés, c'est là aussi que nous retrouvons pour 2-3 stations, la voie ferrée à la gare de Süngataşi. Manifestement le rail était aussi fait pour les touristes... encore que nous n'y voyions aucun train... Nous apercevons sur cette ligne à voie unique, un grand nombre de tunels.

    C'est pas tout, le train. Nous continuons notre montée jusqu'au col à 2400m, découvrons un nouveau paysage de montagnes magnifique, un amphithéatre superbe pour planter la tente et admirer coucher et lever du soleil dans une parfaite solitude.    Read more

    The neverending gorge

    From our lofty campsite with superb views of fold after fold of mountain, today is a day of descent.
    Little did we expect such a long and spectacular gorge. If it were to be michelin-graded we would give it 3 stars. And yet there was nothing anywhere to indicate that it was anything beyond a small mountain road.
    Its really hard to show in photos the scale, the variation, the fragility, the colours, the grandeur that we experience, mile after mile after mile.    Read more

    Passera, passera pas?

    To pass or not to pass?

    Notre itinéraire comporte une sevère inconnue. Pour éviter les grandes routes nous essayons de passer par les petites, parfois même des chemins de terre. Ça a bien marché jusqu'ici, voir les épisodes précédents. Pour nous rendre d'Olur à Ardahan, il semble exister un chemin... sur la carte en tout cas, qui nous emmenerait à 2600m d'altitude sur un chemin de terre. Par contre la viabilité et la connection avec la suite de l'itinéraire sont... probables mais incertains, dirons nous, surtout qu'il reste de la neige!

    Après mûre reflection et discussion des plans B, nous avons décidé de risquer. Après la magnifique descente depuis Horasan, nous campons dans un bel endroit dans la vallée (vers 980m) et nous pensons aux provisions. Nous avons découvert qu'il y a deux cols et donc deux ascensions de 1600m et 1400m qui se suivent et il faut compter trois jours sans magasin -- tout en se chargeant un minimum.
    4 pommes, 2 yaourts, 2 bananes, du lait, 4 tomates, 6 piments, du poulet et du boeuf, 1 onion, 1 citron, des réserves de noix de cajou, abricots et figues secs, du porridge et du pain. Et surtout du chocolat! Pourvu qu'il y ait un magasin à Olur!

    Et c'est parti! La route est belle, Olur a une épicerie. Nous avions prévu de camper vers 2000, et arrivons à 2150m vers 14h00, à coté d'un ruisseau idéal(glacial) pour se baigner. Tout va bien! Mais jusqu'où?    Read more

    The gamble

    Alice has worked hard to find small roads that go high across the turkish mountains. The paper map shows a tiny road that is just in the right place. Unfortunately Openstreetmap shows an intriguing 1km gap in the road so Komoot will not route us. Google, with a little encouragement, thinks it is possible. A little more research shows that a tunnel is being built to shortcut the pass and associated road works may explain the “gap”. We can see tracks on the satellite map which also suggest feasibility.
    There are a few other sticking points. The pass is at 2610m and the top is a dirt road. There is snow lying above 2300, especially on north facing slopes (the descent). And if we try and fail its a huge climb to have made and then a very long way round on big roads with over 2000m of descent that we will need to regain.

    We vote, and both wish to give it a try even if we fail.

    And so it is that today we set off at 7.40 for the final 500m of climb, not knowing if we will soon be returning. The dirt starts earlier than marked and we are soon at the inactive start of the tunnel. The road is steep. A little pushing is required and then we climb quickly and steadily. The snow on this side is confined to the track edge, plus there are encouraging marks of car and tractor tyres. We are not the only ones up here this spring.

    At 9am we are on the top. The view is amazing. And so is the snow.    Read more

    Hold on tight

    We made it to the top. But now we need to get down. Ideally, on the other side.

    There is snow aplenty on the far side… but amazingly the snow has been carved out to clear the track (why, one wonders, is such a high rough track kept open?). It is very good news for us - it becomes increasingly clear that otherwise it would be impossible for us to cross the very steep terrain with our bikes.

    Onwards and downwards through walls of snow on our narrow dirt road. Alain is fearful the road looks like it is barely strong enough. Hold on tight! But still it is wonderful and on top of the world.

    Now comes an unexpected challenge. The road fords a fast stream. Socks and trousers off, crocs and shoes back on. Alain takes the money and passports first, just in case. And we empty Alain’s front panniers which are low to the ground and would be in the water. Then a 2-person effort and the bikes are safely across; our feet scream briefly with the cold.

    Soon we are on a new dirt road that leads down from the new tunnel entrance (the missing 1km). Another long descent, on good dirt, through mountain pastures, then a narrow rocky gorge and a steeply wooded gorge. Until finally we join a tarmac road and start the long climb for tomorrow’s 2610m pass.    Read more

    Champs de neige

    Après notre descente impressionante du Zekeriya dağı, nous retrouvons des gorges très étroites et en gros travaux -- sans doute pour la route qui connecte le tunnel au réseau routier. De là, à 1270m nous retrouvons la route vers Ardahan qui monte super-raide!

    Le souci n'est pas la nourriture mais l'eau, évidemment nous n'allions pas faire fondre de la neige, ou collecter l'eau d'une rivière dans un pays où il y a d'immenses troupeaux partout. Heureusement des fontaines d'eau potable sont construites dans les villages, signalées par un gobelet attaché par une chaine au robinet.

    Nous trouvons vers 1800m un bel endroit pour camper et nous remettre de nos émotions.
    "Il n'y a plus qu'à" repartir à 7h45, pédaler (c'est une habitude) en petite vitesse pendant un peu plus de deux heures... et nous voici à 9h56 à 2617m selon le GPS au milieu d'un champ de neige quasi-parfait. Effectivement, il y a de ce coté une station de ski, avec *un* téléski. Ça ne serait pas étonnant que les sports d'hiver se dévelopent rapidement, par ici!

    La descente est si belle (et nous sommes tellement soulagés d'avoir passé!) qu'elle dure plus longtemps que la montée... :-)    Read more

    Nearing Gürcistan

    Its wet, dark and chilly, thunder cracks overhead. We head out of Ardahan past the old fort. The big dual carriageways we are following today are empty. Curious cows lean over the crash barrier. Shepherds sit under umbrellas looking at their mobile phones.

    We are on high ground between 1800 and 2000m. Empty, wet, green hillsides and patches of snow. It looks like scotland with a few mosques added in.

    A cold harsh headwind that we battle into and a rubbish forecast for the rest of the afternoon. We decide to call it a day a little early, just as the rain sets in, stopping in the last and very remote hotel before the border. Nearly the end of Türkiye! It seems strange to be leaving, and a little sad.    Read more

    Nous partons sous la pluie pour notre dernière journée en Turquie et notre passage en Géorgie. Un petite pensée "Turquie" pour réaliser à quel point ce grand pays est varié, beau et généralement bien conservé, à remercier dans nos têtes toutes les personnes accueillantes, sympas, hospitalières, depuis Bergama jusqu'à Keçili. Réaliser aussi que nous n'avons vu qu'une toute petite ligne dans ce grand pays.

    Pour éviter le tunnel routier qui achemine les poids lourds de Turquie vers la Géorgie (et Russie, Kazakstan, Arménie, Azerbaïdjan, etc.), nous prenons un dernier détour qui domine la gorge profonde mais déserte qui sépare les deux pays. Un chateau! Nous rejoignons la grand route près d'un lac autour duquel paissent et jouent des chevaux complètement libres (sauvages?).

    Changement de pays à la douane, immense à la sortie comme à l'entrée. Sans surprise les douaniers turcs sont des hommes, très gentils, et ne parlent que turc; les Géorgiens sont pour moitié des Géorgiennes et se débrouillent en anglais. Surprise, le drapeau Géorgien (la croix de Saint George) s'accompagne des étoiles Européennes! La Géorgie est candidate à l'entrée dans l'Union.
    Peut-être est-ce lié, nous rencontrons des cyclotouristes français, allemand!

    Plus un minaret, mais des petites chapelles et des croix partout. Des souvenirs de la periode soviétique aussi, avec des villages composés de dizaines d'immeubles, abandonnés souvent, carrés à deux étages, bien alignés. C'est vrai, la frontière entre la Turquie et la Géorgie était une frontière de l'empire soviétique.

    Petit à petit le soleil revient, et nous décidons d'aller planter la tente dans la nature, près de la gorge déserte de ce matin -- un peu plus loin, et de l'autre coté de la frontière. Les rivières coulent sans trop faire de politique.    Read more

    Georgia’s Cave city

    From our night on the high Georgian plateau, we have a very short ride to the crest of a deep gorge. Here the tarmac road becomes a narrow steep hair-pinned dirt track with stupendous views. We descend slowly, revelling in the views of the gorge and of Vardzia, the cave city which faces us across the valley.
    Once down (it’s a long way down) we are amongst tourists!. Something we have been away from for several weeks. The 13-storey cave city was built by King Giorgi III in the 12th Century. It suffered an earthquake in 1283 in which the front side of the caves fell off. They now have railings and make for rather fine balconies with wonderful views. The caves are most impressive and at the same time have many similarities to the caves of Cappadocia.

    Le petit Caucase

    Depuis la Turquie jusqu'à Kutaisi nous traversons le petit Caucase. Nous descendons, puis remontons une série de rivières torrentielles, dans des vallées superbes. Nous avons un chaud soleil interrompu de grosses pluies orageuses.

    Nous avons passé la nuit à Aspindza dans une jolie maison typique: balcons, vigne en pergola, étage en surplomb. Ici, on se protège du soleil et de la pluie, et on fait son vin à la maison.

    Nous continuons par Akhaltsikhe et son chateau, avant de grimper la rivière Abatsumani qui nous amène, à 1300m, à la station thermale du même nom.     The Zekari pass

    Today we have a pass to climb! Our first one in Georgia. After the busy traffic on yesterday’s dirt road, we are pleasantly surprised to have the climb almost entirely to ourselves. The dirt surface is relatively good and we do not have mud problems despite the rain last night. But as we get higher it gets tougher with loose stones that make it hard to stay upright.

    Eventually we are out of the trees and the views begin. There are grassy meadows - but no sheep or shepherds which seems a little strange after Türkiye. We also pass many small landslides and rock falls - one of which means that only small vehicles can pass.

    We make it to the top in time for lunch. It is actually not quite the top nor the pass (which the road skirts) so we contour high round the mountains, rounding the corner to the north-facing side to find plenty of snow - which has once again been cleared.

    Finally we are descending. Then just before the forest restarts, we spot a meadow with wonderful views. A lovely spot to put the tent for the night!    Read more

    The Bike Whisperer

    L'homme qui murmurait à l'oreille des vélos

    Il y a une dizaine de jours, un étrier (caliper) de frein à disque arrière a cassé sur le vélo d'Alain, et Alice a réussi la performance d'en faire expédier un d'Angleterre en courrier DHL, chez un réparateur de vélos renommé (Zura) de Kutaisi. Pour aggraver la situation, le disque avant montre maintenant des signes d'usure très inquiétants - voir la photo, la bande de freinage du disque est trop étroite et les rayons sont mangés à 70% par les patins du frein. Bref, nous allons à Kutaisi chez Zura Bike Shop en ménageant la mécanique.

    La descente est très belle, la végétation luxuriante et les rivières tonitruantes. Arrivés dans la plaine, nous dévorons les kilomètres et arrivons chez Zura à temps pour demander s'il a un disque avant de rechange et prendre un rendez vous le soir même à 20h00 pour le vélo d'Alain, demain pour celui d'Alice. Puis nous grimpons la colline par un chemin pavé hyper-raide pour prendre nos quartiers chez Giorgi.

    Giorgi nous parle de Charles Aznavour (de parents Arméniens établis en Géorgie qui ont fuit le génocide de 1915, puis l'invasion de la Géorgie par les soviets). Il nous parle du vote du 28 mai qui oblige tout activité financée à 20% ou plus par l'étranger à la déclarer, ce qui menace l'adhésion à l'Europe que désirent fortement tous les Géorgiens avec qui nous arrivons à bavarder.

    Le soir, avec le jeune mécano de Zera, les freins d'Alain sont refaits à neuf, + la chaine et la selle retendues. Il ne reste que la pédale qui fait clac-clac. Il est passé 22h00, on verra demain. On travaille tard ici.

    Dimanche il pleut (fort) par intermittence, nous rendons visite au marché couvert et à ses odeurs d'épices incroyables, faisons le plein de cerises, de fraises et de fromage blanc. Puis dévorons le tout sur un banc sur la place centrale.

    À 14h00 une seconde session pour le vélo d'Alice (chaine à changer). Puis Zura décide de réparer la pédale d'Alain dont les roulements avaient mangé sable et eau. Il démonte tout, complimente tout, nettoie tout, graisse tout, bille par bille... et ça remarche parfaitement. Un amoureux du vélo, soucieux que tout vélo qui sort de chez lui soit aussi impeccable que possible! Quel marchand français aurait fait ça?

    Durant cette démonstration, arrivent deux cyclistes souriants et parlant français avec l'accent Aveyronnais. Magie du voyage! C'est ainsi que nous fîmes connaissance de Julie et Flo!

    Le soir nous allons dans un resto essayer un émincé de boeuf à l'estragon. Un orage bombarde la ville avec des grelons gros comme des cerises et même quelques prunes.    Read more

    From Kutaisi, we will spend a week heading for the Caucasus mountains and a high mountain pass.

    To begin with we skirt the foothills, bumping up and down between rivers. It's hard work and not especially rewarding. Particularly as Day one is just plain wet with a puncture thrown in for good measure. Day 2 at least is sunny and we start to get views of the higher mountains that had been completely obscured the day before.

    The roads are largely fenced with iron railings and fancy russio-georgian gates. Between the road and the fencing is a modestly generous verge. The verge is grazed by a wide variety of animals - which also wander the roads. Its a bit like being in a child’s story book. The cows moo, the horses neigh, the dogs bark and chase. And then there are the pigs and piglets, the chickens, the goats and the ducks. Plus offside noises from the frogs and Turkeys. 🦃 🐎 🐄 🐕 🐖 🐓 🐐 🦆.

    As we finish our lunch a family of pigs come by to graze and have a cooling dip. Then it’s more up down up down until we arrive at the last town before we start to head up the long valley we will be climbing for the next 2 days. One last sustained climb brings us to a hugely deep but very narrow dam where we pitch for the night.    Read more

    Le Mythe de Sisyphe

    Après avoir campé près du grand (et vieux) barrage nous repartons à la montée. Une grandiose chaine de montagnes nous apparaît au nord. Nous grimpons tout en sachant que dans une dizaine de km, nous serons revenus au niveau du lac du barrage.

    Le lac est gris vert, et n'arrive que 30m en dessous de son niveau maximal. Ça laisse une énorme plage sale, remplie de troncs et détritus d'arbres divers. C'est plus agréable de tourner la tête, et regarder les magnifiques forêts, cascades, et sommets tout autour.

    La route monte raide, parfois sur les dalles de ciment d'origine, parfois sur des parties défoncées ou inexistantes.
    Il faut laisser passer des bus ou des bétonneuses, s'arrêter, redémarrer. Après un bel effort, nous arrivons sur un court plat.... et ça redescent de 50, voir 100m. Et ça remonte... en fin de journée, tel Sisyphe poussant sa pierre, nous avons monté de 600m et grimpé bien plus du double.

    Et.nous.sommes.épuisés.

    Heureusement, notre tente fait face à de belles montagnes enneigées et nous pouvons nous étirer un peu, puis rêver des hauts sommets qui nous attendent.    Read more

    BIG Mountains

    After yesterday’s climb through the deep narrow valley, today opens up and we have views over many BIG mountains. Mt Ushba at 4700m is good contender for a Georgian Matterhorn, and in the far distance there are glimpses of some 5000+m peaks. Sadly Mt Elbrus (just over the border in Russia and the biggest at 5642m) is hidden by other mountains. Oh well.

    We are now in the Svaneti region which is a very remote and historically inaccessible part of the Caucasus mountains. It is characterized by small medieval protective towers on the sides of the houses. The area was never tamed by any ruler and was renowned for murderous feuds. It seems peaceful now!    Read more

    Les tours de Svanétie

    À quoi ressemble la Svanétie, ce pays perché dans la haute vallée du fleuve Enguri, entouré de montagnes de plus de 4000m et à l'accès limité par des gorges effrayantes d'un coté, et un col aux éboulements pertpetuels de l'autre?

    De nos jours la capitale Mestia a un petit aéroport, deux télécabines et une multitudes de maisons à chambres d'hôtes (guest-house). Il y a au centre 2-3 bons restos et pas mal de cafés. En général, à part la mairie, les maisons qui se construisent essayent de respecter le style "pierre" des anciennes. Par contre les toits de lauzes, encore visibles sur les tours et quelques vieilles maisons, disparaissent.

    Nous passons une journée dans une belle maison adossée à sa tour. Notre hôte, une vieille enseignante dont le père était guide de montagne, parle 5 langues (svanique, grégorien, russe, anglais, allemand). Elle nous décrit ainsi la transition de 1990: les soviets nous donnaient des jobs; et c'est ça qu'on faisait. Depuis, nous sommes libres, alors j'ai des chambres d'hôtes. Si je m'y prends bien je peux avoir un peu plus d'argent! (Petit rire)

    Les promenades au crépuscule sont très belles, quand les nuages s'allument autour des hauts sommets.

    Après un jour de repos, nous repartons vers Ushguli, où la vallée s'ouvre vers 2100m. Superbe montée sauvage! Le village comprend encore des quartiers dans l'état d'origine avec de multiples tours. Notre maison d'hôtes est "Old Tower" et le patron travaille tard au sommet de la tour. Nous pouvons jeter un oeil à l'intérieur et comprenons que ces tours comportent plus de pierre que d'espace!

    Le village vit en autarcie, il y a vaches et chiens, et quelques autochtones. Nous n'avons, par exemple, pas trouvé de lait. C'est un endroit fascinant et prenant. Comment réussir à conserver
    son esprit, tout en le partageant?

    Au fond de la vallée de l'Enguri, une muraille s'élève, dominée par le Mt Shkahra (5193m), le plus haut de Georgie.

    After BIG mountains… BIG pass

    We are a little unsure what to expect of the Zagari pass having seen videos of cyclist friends who had very muddy conditions about 10 days ago. The forecast is that the fine weather will break; so, tossing a coin, we decide to move on and tackle the pass in the dry and with visibility.

    Its actually pretty straightforward with less mud and less dirt road than we had allowed for. Unlike the other passes over 2600m that we did in Turkey, it is much wider and being used by a few vehicles. Having said that, a recent minor landslide means that two ‘all-terrain’ camper-van monsters fail to get across the pass (having taken our photo!). And there is the obligatory socks-off/crocs-on crossing for us to cool our feet.

    We are on the top nice and early and there is only one way to go. Which is down. This is handy as we are both quite shattered. We have beautiful views as we wind downwards and then we follow a lush forested valley for many miles, landing exhausted at a spot by the river. Yet again it is a torrent of thick dark grey raging and roaring waters - so grey that we debate whether it’s suitable even for washing up.    Read more

    Aprés la montée du col Zagari, et la vertigineuse descente qui nous ramène dans la chaleur, nous campons dans une petite aire d'activités au bord de la tumultueuse et tonitruante rivière Tsheniskali. Quelques fanas, très courtois, se réunissent pour pratiquer le tir au fusil de guerre; une vingtaine de coups assourdissants et puis s'en vont. Alain n'apprécie pas-du-tout le concept.

    Le lendemain matin nous poursuivons qq km et passons par la jolie ville de Lentekhi. Alice demande qu'on puisse s'arrêter pour reprendre des forces après les gros efforts de la Svanétie. Alain ne se fait pas trop prier (après tout) et nous restons donc trois nuits dans une maison d'hôtes. Pour nous consoler, il pleut plus de la moitié du temps.

    C'est une belle maison Géorgienne, avec des grandes pièces, de beaux balcons couverts, des tonnelles où grimpe la vigne; et des escaliers extérieurs dans tous les sens. Il y a là toute une petite famille, au centre de laquelle tourne la fée Miranda, qui tient le magasin, sert les invités (nous) s'occupe de sa fille et du petit bébé, à qui elle fait régulièrement faire son rot... et change donc de chemisier environ cinq fois par jour.

    Miranda nous prépare deux diners succulents, avec du pain plat (puri shoti) qu'elle a pétri et cuit elle-même. Nous découvrons aussi le Tkemali, sauce à base de prunes sauvages (prunes tkemali vertes au printemps, prunelles et autres prunes amères en été), pressées, salées, puis mélangées à de la coriandre fraiche -- à garder en mémoire!     Ayant quitté Miranda reposés et bien nourris, nous continuons la descente de la Tschenstkali, non sans quelques petites remontées bien raides comme il se doit; et quelques alertes-chiens que nous maitrisons de mieux en mieux. C'est très beau.

    La vallée se resserre finalement, et nous voici en train de grimper à 10-12% pour jouer à saute-montagne vers la gorge de la Lajamuri, qui débouche sur le puissant fleuve Rioni que nous avions déjà passé à Kutaisi.

    Là, un camping-aventures nous propose une descente du cañon; en avant! Cette fois-ci sur un canoé gonflable (ou petit raft) 3 places, dans un cours d'eau furieux qui ramasse toute la fonte des glaciers du Caucase versant sud sur près de 100 kilomètres. Respect.

    Alain, devant, se charge de prendre l'eau dans le nez, et de donner le rythme du pagayage -- quand il le peut encore. Alice, derrière, se charge de suivre le rythme et de rigoler quand ça secoue bien. L'instructeur est chargé de la Go-pro, et de nous envoyer dans des rapides de plus en plus impressionnants pendant près de deux heures. La seule chose en commun avec le vélo, c'est qu'on a un casque sur la tête.    Read more

    Not a bridge

    The climb up to the reservoir where we will spend the night is heavily wooded, warm and long. We pause to visit a Georgian medieval cathedral with intricate exterior stonework and old frescos inside.

    The night by the water is little less idyllic than hoped for. The fishermen (and the mosquitos) are up all night. The former move their car onto our secluded beach after we have already pitched and their night time shenanigans (especially the warning lights that flash each time they unlock /lock the car) disturb us.

    The next morning we are up early and enjoy the early mists and the ride along the water to a small pass. Here we start the long descent into the heat of the main valley of Georgia.

    Trying to avoid both ups and downs across the foothills and the motorway, we choose an offroad route, suggested by komoot. We cross the river meadows through the cows only to find that the bridge marked on the map is nothing more than a raised gas pipe. Do we go back and the brave the motorway? Climb back many km in the heat to go round? Or wade this uncrossable looking river? We start to head back, then Alain bravely tests the muddy warm water. It is just at his shorts-line. But not so easy as we can not see the bottom, and there is a current and slippery boulders. Alain succeeds in carrying each bike above the water. We make many trips (8 for Alain) taking panniers, tent etc. Finally we are across and can now head along the hot and busy valley roads. Turning off the main road we struggle on, landing exhausted by an idyllic stream with a wonderful nighttime frog accompaniment.    Read more
