    Devil's Marbles to Bitter Springs

    July 13, 2017 in Australia ⋅

Roy, Finn and Meg checked out dawn at Devil's Marbles before we packed up early and set off for a huge day in the car. Eight hours later (including a lunch stop) we arrived at Bitter Springs and a very warm 32 degrees!
Along the way we enjoyed more of the bright green landscape from yesterday and the termite mounds increased in size and number (many dressed in clothes and hats...). There were some really lush green spots like Gilmore Swamp and beautiful Ghost Gums dotted the sides of the highway. The green on some of the trees up here is so light and bright it seems almost surreal! We stopped at the iconic Daly Waters Pub for a Barra Burger and beer for lunch and the kids met up with Mo the parrot (another traveller's pet). We arrived at Bitter Springs just after 4pm - enough time to set up and then walk the few hundred metres down the road for our first float down the Spring. Amazing water - crystal clear and warm (34 degrees!) and it flows so you hop in at one end, float downstream and then walk back and repeat! The water's deep and the path was rocky so we made note to return the next day with pool noodles (hired from the caravan park) and to hook our thongs/crocs onto them as we floated downstream so we could easily traverse the return path!Read more

    Bitter Springs

    July 15, 2017 in Australia ⋅

We stopped for 3 relaxing nights at Bitter Springs and thoroughly enjoyed our numerous "laps" of the Springs which were a short walk from the shady caravan park - actually, the perfect distance to walk back after a dip and still be slightly damp and cool by the time we reached the van! We soon acclimatised to the warmer day time temperatures (about 32 degrees) and enjoyed the nights dropping down to about 14 degrees.
The Springs were truly amazing - crystal clear and a constant 34 degrees (slightly warmer in the middle of the day) with enough flow to hop in and float down stream with minimal effort. With masks/snorkels and goggles it was the perfect combination of pool + movement to keep the kids entertained for hours on end!
Roy and the kids attempted a spot of fishing in the nearby river after spotting an impressive Barramundi caught by one of the long term residents...seems it takes slightly more experience (and dry cat food as bait!) to catch a big one! In the end we decided to head 2km up the road for the free Barramundi fish feeding sessions (held daily at 9.30 and 1) and the kids each got a turn to feed the super-size specimens a pilchard!

    Bitter Springs

    May 3, 2017 in Australia ⋅

Read more

    June 2, 2017 in Australia ⋅

Had a fantastic 4 nights at Bitter Springs Campground. It was an easy walk from the campground to Bitter Springs where we spent most morning and afternoons floating down the river in our pool hammocks.

We also frequented Mataranka Springs which was a short 7km drive. Mataranka Springs have been concreted around the sides and has no weeds, lillies and logs etc which some preferred.

    Temperature 17-29°
    Diesel $1.39
