      Byron Bay day 5/ Goldcoast

      April 28 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

      Burleigh Heads and Brisbane

      May 11 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

We went back to the Goldcoast to check out Burleigh Heads, renowned for its great surf and fantastic restaurant. Just 10km south of Surfers Paradise but it does feel a lot smaller with a good community vibe, seemed a lot more local orientated. As usual it was raining so we had a quick look at the national park which hugs the coast, sat under a tree and watched the surfers then found a nice dry bar and drunk until dinner time.

Our last night before we fly south to Sydney and we're back in Brisbane, mainly because this is where our flight is from. Again, it's raining so we went into the centre and hit their Museums. We did a science museum where we recognised all the animals we saw in the wild or at zoos and learnt again about their giant Wombat. After that we did a modern art gallery that was interesting!

Sorry not a lot of photos this time, difficult with the rain!

      Bye Bye Gold Coast

      November 21, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Read more

      Tallebudgera Creek

      March 6 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We decided that we must spend a little time on the Gold Coast, a city we had passed through before but never really stopped to look at. It is not the place we would usually be attracted to as it comprises of large skyscrapers and big commerce, however it extends for some miles along a very sandy beach.
We stayed at Tallebudgera Creek Tourist Park which lies just inland at the Tallebudgera and Burleigh River Heads.
On Tuesday we chilled out in the morning and then wandered along the Creek to the sea and took an amble down the beach looking toward Coolangatta at the southern end of the Gold Coast.
Wednesday turned out to be a stinking hot day. We drove to the north end of the beach, through Surfers Paradise to Main Beach where we parked up. We wanted to send a small gift to Will and Sarah in Perth to celebrate the birth of Mia Mac, so we set off walking to the local mall to find a post office. The mall was about 1.5 miles away around The Broadwater, the day was getting hotter and hotter in the sunshine and the humidity was high. Returning to the car turned out to be a bit of an ordeal - the temperature had reached 34 degree and the sun relentless. We had intended to walk along the spit to The Broadwater entrance but bailed out as the effort was killing. On the plus side we did walk past the entrance to The Palazzio Versace which lovers of IMACGMOH would recognise – very upmarket. Helicopters were flying all day, from the nearby landing pad, taking tourists up for views of the city.
We ended up driving along the spit where we fell into a restaurant for a cold beer. It was so hot and humid we did not walk the extra few hundred yards to see the sand pump jetty, preferring instead the air conditioned comfort of the car.
That evening a storm passed through which was very welcome, bringing with it reduced temperatures and much lower humidity.

      Gold Coast: Burleigh Heads

      December 13, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

      Gold Coast

      October 6, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Conor and Megan (friends from Canada) got us in touch with Kim, on the Gold Coast. She was super welcoming (and trusting) even though she had never met us before! We stayed with her, Josh and their roommate Sam for 15 days. It was super relaxed but also a nice base to explore the area from. By the end of our stay she felt like family and it feels like we've known her for years!

Kim has a similar diet to Jenna, so we bonded over cooking and going to the saturday morning farmers market. We made rice wraps (Mats made burrito-sized ones), roasted veggies and juiced veggies. Mmmm! We also went out to a restaurant and had squid and sweet potato fries. All of a sudden, Khal Drogo* walks in.. What?! (*the actor, who plays in Game of Thrones).

Kim and Josh's place is a 10 minute walk from the beach. So, we went down many times to bodysurf, admire storms and go for walks. A short walk down, Burleigh Head rises up out of the water. We did sunrise yoga at the base, climbed to the top, went for a run and even saw whales! We also did a short hike over a boardwalk through a mangrove forest. It passed a sanctuary where we saw more Koala's (with a baby!) and our first Wallabies! They look like miniature kangaroos and are really cute. On the canals behind the house, we got up on the SUP (stand-up paddle board)! "But don't fall in, there are bull sharks in these waters", no pressure...

On the weekend, we did a day-trip to Byron Bay, the surfing and hippy town South of Gold Coast. Josh taught us how to surf! And afterward we hiked around the headland. This is the Eastern-most tip of mainland Australia! We spotted more whales and on the other side, where the surf was much higher, we watched the more experienced surfers catching waves. Back on the Gold Coast, we tried surfing a few more times. It's harder than it looks, paddling out against the waves, paddling with the wave to get speed, and then to catch your balance to get up. After three days, we were riding waves on our knees and Mats got up on his feet a few times. Righteous!

We had a farewell dinner at the Collective, another cool concept. Five restaurants have teamed up and share seating. There is something for everyone, even for Jenna and Kim. But for those who suffer from analysis-paralysis, choice-stress, FOMO (fear of missing out), are decision-impaired, etc. this place is a nightmare! Mats has a hard enough time with one menu ;) But the food was delicious!

Turns out it wasn't goodbye for long. Partly by chance, we'd run into Kim again a week later in Auckland! And we hope to see her again when she is visiting Conor and Megan in Canada next summer.

Dear Jenna & Mats, reading your posts makes Jacqueline and me recall our travels along the east and south coast of Australia in 1995 and 2010. Did you visit the wreck at Fraser Island? And our BC tour in 2016. Looks like you are on day 124 of your world tour. Stopped posting? Safe travels, Gert

Hallo Gert!

      Day 3 - Coolangatta

      November 20, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The weather forecast wasn't great again today and it wasn't really sunbathing weather so we decided to go for another walk (it's like Isla Grande all over again). As we didn't make it to Burleigh Head National Park when we were in Surfers, we decided to catch the bus there and then walk back. When we got there we took the rainforest trail to the Tumgun Lookout which gave a great view back towards Coolangatta. I also narrowly missed a snake that slithered across the path in front of me which I didn't notice. Fortunately it looked like a python so we it couldn't have done a serious damage. On the way back down from the Lookout we stopped on a little beach next to the estuary that comes in from the sea for lunch. The sun was super hot by this point so we regretted not taking our swimmers as the water looked so inviting.

We then made our way back towards Coolangatta, passing through Palm Beach, Currumbin and Tugun. It was around the Tugan mark that someone had had enough of walking, so we jumped back on the bus for the final bit. To be fair it was a very long way back. Before heading home we grabbed a quick and easy dinner from Aldi and then had a nice and quiet evening.

      Gold Coast Weekend Week 4

      February 1, 2020 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

      Hei loved ones
Even if we spent the weekend here in surfers, we experienced a lot of things!
Our weekend already started on friday as we skipt school again because it was dominic‘s birthday (no worries we are allowed to skip one day per week🤷🏽‍♀). We went to a wildlife sanctuary where we saw kanguroos, crocodils, koala... 🦘 🐨. It was a nice experience and we could learn a lot of the australian wildlife because they did shows about the behaviors of the animals. The sun was shining so we went to a beach called Burleigh Heads in the afternoon☀. In the evening we had dinner all together at an delicious italian restaurant.
On Saturday we went to Tallebudgera-Beach. We stayed at the beach the entire day just enjoyed the sun and our friends. After that we went home to get ready for another nightout.
As we not slept to much the last few weeks, we decided to sleep in on sunday, went to the beach nearby, did a gymsession, cooked dinner at home and had to do some schoolwork.

We wish you a good start in the new week! 🙌🏽

      Love and miss you.
      xoxo Meret&Fendi ♥️

p.s: Dominic is the guy in the first picture who lives with Robin and Nico, the two guys with the stylish hair. We have a lot of fun with them and they always make sure that we laugh enough😂
