    Tennant Creek

    May 26 in Australia

Today we basically just drove except for two stops on the way. One was to visit the Devils Pebbles. A smaller version of the Devils Marbles and overall pretty unspectacular. The other stop was for lunch but as we are coming closer to the center the flies increased as well and wouldn't allow us to have a relaxed meal...

Tenant Creek - half way there!

    August 3, 2017 in Australia

675km and we've made it to Tenant Creek. We left Katherine at 10.30am, and got here as the sun set at 6.15pm. Finished off Chamber of Secrets and on to Prisoner of Azkaban!
Actually, the journey was pretty smooth, amazing what a difference it makes when there is no traffic and the roads are straight...
We stopped off at some thermal hot springs 100km south of Katherine, like sitting in a warm bath but in a tropical forest in the middle of nowhere. After that, the landscape got drier, the plants got fewer and the rocks got redder. But bizarrely, it is 10 degrees cooler - even though we are now in the desert.
Not sure we will be hanging out in Tenant Creek any longer than necessary - despite the fact that it is the major centre for an area equivalent to the whole of the UK, it seems a desolate place and we'll be glad to move on and get to Alice. Just under 500k tomorrow so a short hop compared to today!

    Devil's Marbles

    October 15, 2016 in Australia

    Tennant Creek - Devils Marbles

    June 21, 2017 in Australia

The Devils Marbles near Tennant Creek, known as Karlu Karlu by the local Warumungu Aboriginals, are a collection of huge, red, rounded granite boulders scattered across a wide, shallow valley. The boulders formed millions of years ago when an upsurge of molten rock reached the surface and spread out in a solid layer. Erosion over millions of years, caused the large block of erupted granite to crack and split into rectangular blocks, progressing to erode the sharp corners to smooth and finally rounded edges . Many of the giant boulders are precariously balanced on top of one another. The area surrounding the boulders is somewhat flat which makes this huge rounded collection even more spectacular.Read more

    Tennant Creek

    April 28, 2017 in Australia

Telstra is king out here and we were fortunate to find a phone boosting tower at our camp. Had to get a shot of Graham using this 21st century version of the ole bush telegraph.
After leaving Ti-Tree this morning we've made our way along the Stuart highway toward our next camp. This is a road we've done a few times so didn't feel the need to get out and look at everything again. Couldn't help but get in a shot at Barrow Creek Hotel -very 'rustic' and now known as the place Joanne Lees was first taken when found by a truckie not far up the road after her ordeal with Bradley Murdoch. I doubt anyone can now drive this stretch of highway without at least momentarily thinking of Peter Falconio and what happened.
Wycliffe Wells (alien-sighting capital of Oz?!) is another interesting stop but found it all a bit sad and grubby this time. The fact that nothing had been done to the alien display (or general shelving for that matter) since we were last through here few years ago was a bit off putting. A dust would have been good. 🙁

So here we sit at the dump point next to sports oval, catching up on fb and emptying our toilet (it's a glamorous life) before moving on to Kunjarra (The Pebbles) - an area the locals kindly allow visitors to camp by. That's enough for one day :)

    THE PEBBLES

    June 27, 2017 in Australia

We had just come from Alice Springs where we had "cleaned" our car and camper when we came to the turn off to The Pebbles and realised it was a dirt road. The Pebbles are just like a mini Devils Marbles. We only stayed there one night. The sunsets were pretty impressive there.

    Tennant creek

    June 27, 2017 in Australia

Retracing our steps back to Tennant Creek.
I found an excellent school work book for the kids CALLED. It has been written by a teacher who saw a Gap in the market. She has made a fun activity book, aligned with all aspects of the curriculum, and covered all the main areas in the Northern Territory. It's a perfect way for the kids to connect to the places we are visiting and learn in a meaningful way. Erin is really enjoying doing her book, Ben is a bit more reluctant to do the more creative and lateral writing activities.
Stayed at free camp called The Pebbles. The nearby area is a women only sacred Aboriginal site. The Pebbles themselves were like mini Devils Marbles and I think there is some connection between the two.
Erin and Ben played brilliantly together in the tent with their Henry dolls. It amazes me they both still love this imagination game.
I am attempting to learn how to take night sky and star photos. I failed dismally here - I think there was too much light interference from other campers.
It is finally getting warm again at night!
