      Banff National Park

      Wir verbringen fast 2 Tage im Banff National Park, dem ersten Nationalpark Kanadas 🇨🇦, der 1885 gegründet wurde und sich über 6.641 Quadratkilometer erstreckt.

      Im Nationalpark liegt Lake Louise, ein bekanntes Dörfchen aus dem Ski-Weltcuprennen ⛷️ 🌎. Wir halten auch in Banff, das Städtchen ist vom Tourismus geprägt und erinnert stark an Zermatt oder Grindelwald. 😉😅 Melanie findet die Strassennamen toll (Squirrel, Wolf 🐺, Bear 🐻, Otter 🦦, Buffalo 🦬, Lynx, Rabbit 🐰, Moose 🫎, Fox 🦊 usw.)! ❤️

      Wir übernachten im Protection Mountain Campground (Fee 24.00 Dollar) & gehen am zweiten Tag wieder Wandern. 🥾

      In Banff befindet sich, der wohl grösste Campground Kanadas mit 1‘149 Plätzen & er ist tatsächlich komplett ausgebucht. 😳 Man bedenke dass eine Nacht zwischen 30-40 Dollar kostet, so nehmen sie pro Nacht über 41’000 Dollar ein. 🤑 Dafür hat er jedoch auch 6 eigene Bushaltestellen 🚏. 😉      Read more

      Day 290

      Carthew Alderson Trail

      July 15 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

      Poslední výlet ve Watertonu začal jízdou minibusem k jezeru Cameron. Svezla nás paní, která v městečku celý život žije a je jednou z jeho posledních 40 obyvatel. Celý život strávila práci v národním parku, například průvodcovstvím po horách, a tak jsme se dozvěděli spoustu zajímavostí.

      Od jezera jsme vystoupali cca 800 m do horského sedla a otevřel se nám výhled do všech stran. Zájemci si mohli trasu prodloužit výšlapem na okolní vrcholy, kam často nevede cesta, takže se tam musíte vyškrábat, neboli jak místní říkají "scramble". My jsme to vzhledem k vedru a puchýřům vzdali...

      Trasa pokračovala pozvolným sestupem kolem několika nádherných jezer a dovedla nás až zpátky do kempu v městečku Waterton.      Read more

      Day 1

      Arriving Calgary - Good, Bad, Ugly

      July 21 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F

      The Good - Smooth, easy flight, arrived on time. Flew through Customs in less than 10 minutes!

      The Bad - The rental car line had at least 75 people in a long line in the warm, un-air conditioned room. (Photo doesn't show how the line snakes back and forth 4 times.) It took 2 and 1/2 hours to get a car. Yikes!

      The Ugly - This morning (0445), a confluence of events conspired to create chaos. I'd had a touchy tummy for a few days, and, of course, my GI system got rowdy just as our Uber driver arrived 15 minutes early! Despite early morning darkness, rain, and being rushed, I congratulated myself on having everything totally packed and organized the night before, and being perfectly on time to the airport. At our gate, I realized I'd left my tablet plugged in at my bedside at home! 😭

      Allow me to whine. Aghhh! I had books loaded to read and I need the bigger screen to edit photos. Now, instead of a keyboard, I am pecking letter by letter at a snail's pace! (A 1st world problem, I know!)

      Day 2

      Banff Day 1

      July 22 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

      Easy, quick drive to Banff, but we arrived WAY too early to check into our condo. Banff has a ski/tourist/mountain town vibe with lots of restaurants, shops, and LOTS of traffic. (And pedestrians and cyclists!)

      Charlie had a list of easy hikes for us, so we started on his list! The first one, Fenland trail, wound through forests and along the lovely 40 Mile Creek. Afterwards, picnic tables next to the stream beckoned, so we ate lunch there.

      The next hike, Marsh Lake, was a 2 mile loop along hot springs, forests, and the very green (glacial) Bow River. Unfortunately, much of the trail was also used by horses 😮‍💨 🐎 We trudged around piles of manure and endured voracious mosquitoes. Delightful 60-70 degrees this morning morphed into 90 + degrees in the afternoon. Our very next stop was to buy bug spray!

      Still killing time before check-in, we went to the historic Banff Springs Hotel (looks like a massive castle). Originally built by a railroad magnate in the 1880s, it was rebuilt in the 1920s and renovated in 2001.

      Day 3

      Banff, Day 2, Part 2 (Hike # 2)

      July 23 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

      After a picnic lunch on the bank of Johnson Lake, we began the loop trail around the lake. Crowds of people were sunbathing and swimming at the beach area near the parking lot. Fortunately, few were on the loop trail around the lake. See pics below.

      Background - Our condo is part of a "resort" complex that seems a bit old and tired. (Our accommodations are perfect, tho). As part of this "resort", there is an indoor pool area with large hot tub area, kiddy pool, and 2 massive water slides (all indoors!).

      Returning from our hikes hot and tired, we thought we'd check out the pool area. NO ONE was there - yay! And, the C02 levels were very low - double yay! Bottom line, we had a refreshing fun time! What an unexpected perk!

      Noteworthy issue - Since arrival in Canada 3 days ago, we've noticed the skies are very hazy - from numerous wildfires West of us.

      Today, Jasper National Park and the town of Jasper are evacuated, with all reservations canceled until 8/6. BUMMER! We have reservations 7/28 -7/31. Charlie, the trip organizer, is scrambling to sort out alternatives!      Read more

      Day 89–91

      Waterton Lakes National Park

      July 20 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      Wir erreichen den Waterton Lakes National Park & übernachten 2 Tage. Am ersten Abend kocht Dillon eine Fleischbällchen Tajine mit Pitabread. 🧡 Diese duftet herrlich & schmeckt köstlich. 😋

      Den Sonntag lassen wir ruhig angehen, schlafen 😴 wiedermal aus & machen uns frische Pancakes mit Banana 🍌, Blaubeeren 🫐 & Himbeeren. Am Nachmittag schlendern wir durch die Townsite & fahren zum Red Rock Canyon. Leider war dort eine Touristenmasse, welche die Natur zu 0% schätzt & im Canyon herumläuft & badet. 🙈 Wir verzichteten daher auf die geplante Kurzwanderung & genossen den späteren Nachmittag in unserem schönen & ruhigen Campground, grillieren & liesen den Abend gemütlich ausklingen.       Day 4

      Banff, Day 3

      July 24 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

      For our last day in the Banff area, we embarked on Upper Stony Mountain Trail, a 2.7 mile loop up and up and up through lovely forests to a view of Cascade Mountain and the Bow Valley. This one did me in! (I don't deal well with a 1000 foot elevation gain and a 20-30% grade). So done. But it was only 1100!

      Next on Charlie's list was
      Sunshine Village, a ski area with gondolas and chair lifts up to alpine lakes and meadows. What a pleasant surprise! And my kinda hiking (riding uphill)!

      We took a long gondola up to the village, then a chair lift higher up, so we could stroll downhill back to the gondola and back down. 😀 Perfect! But, no one told us there was this "little" uphill section (a mile or so) where we crossed the continental divide at 7,200 feet. (Charlie commented that we hiked from Alberta to British Columbia and back by crossing the Continental Divide 🤣🤣🤣)!

      Regardless of my feet protesting, the alpine views were stunning. The photos and video are from The Rock Isle Lake viewpoint, and around part of the lake. For the video, a park worker from New Zealand narrated the view. I could have stayed here all day and come back for more.      Read more

      Dritte Arbeitswoche

      Eine durchmischte Woche liegt hinter uns. Nur an einem Tag war das Wetter gut genug für die Honigernte und es wurde klar, dass neben ganz Alberta auch Spirit Hills das schlechteste Honigjahr seit langem durchlebt (hier gerade mal 30% des Durchschnitts).

      Die Woche hatte aber auch viel Gutes:
      -Pavlova, Bärenfleisch und Heuschrecke probiert und alles für köstlich befunden.
      -die beste Erbsenernte seit es diesen Garten gibt eingetragen (20 Kilo) und die zu dünnen/kleinen Zuckerschoten zu Abend gegessen 😍
      -Zu Beccas Geburtstag eine monströse Erdbeertorte selbst gebacken (mit den letzten Beeren aus dem Garten)
      -Endlich bei einer offiziellen Spirit Hills Winery Tour mitgemacht und alle Weinsorten probiert (schmecken anders als die WWOOFer-Vorräte)
      -Die Erlaubnis bekommen, einen Teil des Entdeckelungswachses zu Kerzen zu verarbeiten, da sie es bisher nur dreckig verkaufen und nicht nutzen.

      Eine neue Aufgabe haben wir übernommen, die einen unangenehmen Nebeneffekt hat. Im Gewächshaus wachsen wunderschöne Hanf-Pflanzen, von denen eine Sorte noch keine Blüten ansetzt. Bei solchen Fällen ist es nötig, den Pflanzen einen Tag/Nacht-Rhythmus von jeweils 12 Stunden zu simulieren. Wir müssen nun um 8 Uhr abends die Pflanzen mit einer Plane bedecken und diese um 8 Uhr morgens wieder entfernen. Leider riecht man danach nach Kiffer 😫      Read more

      Prähistorischer Langeweiletag

      Neuer Montag, neuer Ausflug. Diesmal 2h15 bis nach Drumheller (um dem Regen zu entkommen...hat aber dort auch geschüttet). Die Landschaft nennt sich Badlands und sieht ziemlich prähistorisch aus. Hier werden noch heute sehr viele Fossilien entdeckt. Einige sind im Royal Tyrell Museum ausgestellt, das wir besuchten. Es war uns leider zu voll und zu wenig interaktiv. Das Lesen der Tafeln ist schwierig, wenn man im Slalom an vielen Köpfen vorbeigucken muss.

      Im Zentrum von Drumheller aßen wir ein mittelmäßiges Kneipenessen und hielten bei der berühmten, riesigen T-Rex Statue. Hat uns mehr beeindruckt als die reellen Skelette aus dem Museum 😅

      Man sagt außerdem, dass die Region mit den bekannten „Hoodoos“ der kleine Grand Canyon ist...bei schönem Wetter bestimmt toll! Im Regen hatten wir aber keine Lust auf Spazieren und sind dann lieber ohne dieses Erlebnis nach Hause gefahren 🤷🏼‍♀️      Read more

      Vierte Arbeitswoche

      Die Woche ging mal wieder rasend schnell vorbei, obwohl sie einen Tag länger als sonst war. Wir hatten einen dicken Honigerntetag, haben Ableger in ihre Winterboxen umgezogen, schimmelnde Kürbisse aus einem Gewächshaus entfernt, einen Sonnenwachsschmelzer zusammengebaut und bei der Produktion einer neuen Charge Dande-Wein geholfen. Samstag und Sonntag waren Open Farm Days in Alberta, wo Spirit Hills zwischen 10 und 16 Uhr halbstündige Führungen und Tastings angeboten hat. Hier mussten wir Besucher begrüßen und zu Parkplätzen führen, Weingläser spülen und uns um Kinder kümmern (bis auf ein Pärchen waren die meisten ohne ihre Kids unterwegs und wir spielten daher selber Sackhüpfen, Horseshoes, Latterball und malten Bilder 😁).Read more
