      Valparaiso, Chile

      After a stunning bus ride through the Andes, Whit and I made it to Chile and back to the Pacific Ocean! Our first stop was the artsy coastal city of Valparaiso, think Wellington or San Francisco. The 'cerros' (hills) of the city, where most of the population live, rise up out of the ocean and are remarkably easy to get lost in - both literally and metaphorically. The narrow cobbled streets wind their way upwards while hundreds of twisting and turning walkways and staircases give you picturesque views of the coast. There are colourful graffiti murals around every corner and buskers fill the streets with their Spanish music. Valparaiso is a wonderful place.

      We did a walking tour of Valparaiso, learning about its history as a key port town during the California goldrush. We also spent a day on the beach relaxing, watching a sea lion colony fight amongst themselves, and an evening out singing karaoke. We now head to Chile's capital city, Santiago.      Read more

      Premiers moments de voyage, première étape : Valparaiso au Chili, jolie ville au bord du Pacifique, aux collines recouvertes de maisons colorées. Certaines fresques murales sont de véritables œuvres d'art, et il fait bon s'y promener - à pied, car ça grimpe sec ; les cyclistes sont courageux !

      Heureux de pouvoir enfin se poser et souffler après ces semaines intenses en préparatifs. Curieux de découvrir ce que vont nous réserver ces 7 mois de périple : belles rencontres qui vont ponctuer et orienter notre chemin, paysages à contempler, galères à surmonter... On est au tout début de ce projet qu'on a en tête depuis si longtemps, tout est à écrire et c'est super excitant !      Read more

      Buntes Valparaiso

      Valparaiso gilt für viele als die kulturelle Hauptstadt Chiles - und würde man sie mit einem Wort beschreiben müssen, wäre das wohl: Bunt!
      Jedes Haus hat eine andere Farbe, jede Wand, insbesondere im historischen Stadtkern, ist mit bunten Graffities verziert, an jeder Ecke gibt es etwas neues zu entdecken. Die Stadt erstreckt sich außerdem über zahlreiche Hügel (Cerros), die über Treppen sowie einige kleine Standseilbahnen (Ascensores) zu erklimmen sind.
      Wie ich bereits an meinem ersten Tag hier feststellen konnte, kann man sich in den vielen kleinen Ecken, Windungen und Sträßchen sehr leicht verlaufen - entdeckt dabei aber immer wieder schöne, neue Flecken.
      Um mich doch etwas besser zu orientieren, entschloss ich mich an gleich zwei verschiedenen "Free Walking Tours" teilzunehmen, die in jeweils drei Stunden völlig verschiedene Seiten von Valparaiso beleuchteten. Neben den schönsten Aussichtspunkten und wichtigsten Plätzen, erfuhren wir von den einheimischen Guides viele interessante Hintergrundinfos zur Geschichte der Stadt.
      Gleichzeitig für mich eine gute Gelegenheit, ein paar andere Reisende kennenzulernen, zum Beispiel Jan aus Stuttgart, mit dem ich mich nach der Tour noch für eine Pizza verabredete.
      Valparaiso fühlt sich nach den zuletzt vielen kleinen, ruhigen Örtchen für mich zum ersten Mal nach Buenos Aires wieder nach Großstadt an, dementsprechend ist alles ein wenig lauter, dreckiger und hektischer als zuletzt. Überall wird an Straßenständen Obst, Schmuck und alles Mögliche verkauft. Trotzdem hat die Stadt mit ihren vielen Farben Charme!
      Nach drei Tagen Herumlaufen habe ich immer noch das Gefühl, längst nicht alles gesehen zu haben.
      Heute, am Silvestertag, machte ich mich noch auf den Weg zum Strand und Fischmarkt, von wo aus man einen tollen Blick auf den Hafen der Stadt hatte. Außerdem kann man von hier aus Seehunde bei Ihren tollpatschigen Versuchen beobachten, eine kleine Plattform im Meer zu erklimmen und riesigen (!) Albatrossen bei Ihrer Flugshow zusehen.
      Da mein Hostel ein wenig abseits vom Zentrum liegt, werde ich die Silvesternacht wohl vom Dach aus verfolgen, von wo man die Stadt gut überblicken kann. In Valparaiso soll es übrigens das spektakulärste Feuerwerk in ganz Chile zu sehen geben, ich bin gespannt!

      Buntes Stadtleben

      Zum ersten Mal habe ich nun einen etwas größeren Sprung gemacht und bin nach Valparaíso gereist, was sich unweit von Chiles Hauptstadt Santiago entlang einer Bucht und mehrere Hügel hinauf schlängelt.

      Aus europäischer Sicht wirkt die Stadt etwas schmuddelig, ist dabei aber authentischer als herausgeputzte Touriorte wie zuletzt Pucón. Da gehört es bei der aktuellen politischen Lage schon zum Stadtbild, wenn auf einmal ein gepanzerter Wasserwerfer um die Ecke kommt.

      Kein Scherz, ich bin dieses Mal völlig zufällig auf einen der Proteste hier gestoßen, der mehr oder weniger nebenher ablief. Ein surreales Bild, wie Busse und Passanten ihrer normalen Wege nachgehen, während keine 100 Meter weiter Steine und Tränengasgrananten fliegen. Die teilweise noch deutlich minderjährigen Demonstrierenden bekommen dabei in Form von Hupkonzerten Unterstützung. Trotz allem ein erschreckendes Bild, auf welchen Hass die im Grunde machtlosen Einsatzkräfte treffen. Ich frage mich, warum sie überhaupt ausrücken, denn sie verhindern keine Sachbeschädigung und kommen so nur der Provokation nach. Vielleicht wissen sie das auch, müssen aber notgedrungen Präsenz zeigen.

      Valpo, wie man es hier nennt, ist auch die südamerikanische Hauptstadt für Streetart. Stundenlang bin ich an mehreren Tagen mehr oder weniger ziellos durch die Straßen und Gassen gelaufen, um immer wieder neue Kunstwerke, oft verknüpft mit politischen Botschaften, zu entdecken. Zusammen mit den bunt bemalten Häusern und dem unübersichtlichen Wegenetz, zu dem auch unzählige Treppen und mehrere Aufzüge gehören, zog mich die Stadt mit Leichtigkeit in ihren Bann.

      We caught an early taxi to the bus station with an American girl that was working at the hostel. We have run into a lot of hostel workers that fund their trips by working at hostels along the way. She had given us some good suggestions while in Mendoza. We opted for bus instead of flying for 2 reasons. One the route takes you through the Andes and gives you amazing views. Two it was a lot cheaper. The drive lived up to the expectations. Once you pass through the border the bus drives down this crazy road that snakes back and forth down the mountain. Over 20 switchbacks. As per usual there are no guard rails so you are right on the edge.

      We arrived in Valapairso and right from the get go we both loved the city. Valparaiso is a hillside city located on the coast of Chile. When they ran out of flat spots near the shore they built the city up into the hills. It used to be a really rich city that was a midway point for travellers on the way to California but opening of the Panama Canal led to its downfall. Roads snake and wind throughout the different parts of the city. You can easily get lost. Since it is on a hillside there is tons of walking up and down steep hills. What really sets this city apart is its colourful graffiti. The city has embraced street art and giant murals. There is a lot of graffiti but a lot of beautiful art as well.

      During our stay we did 3 separate city tours. Each one took us to a similar part of the city but each time we explored different alleyways and routes so it didn’t feel like there was any overlap. One tour was specific to the graffiti which tried to explore the origins and highlight impressive murals. It has been interesting how all of the tours we have done in South America have tied in a political aspect where they try to give us some history on the most recent dictatorship.

      Our stay was too short in Valparaiso but we had a flight the following night so unfortunately we had to leave and add it to our list of places to return to.      Read more

      Valparaíso is famous for its colourful houses, steep hills and many funinculars going up and down and all over the place.
      We arrived here at the second attempt, having overslept the previous morning. It almost happened again after a few too many Piscolas (pisco and coke) the night before, but we managed to drag ourselves onto a bus.
      It is a port city in a bay full of huge container ships and some Chilean navy boats almost as big.
      Seeing the queues for the first funincular we came across, we opted to walk up the hill. It was tough going, especially with our hangovers, but worthwhile to see all the funny little houses and a great view of the port from the top.
      Back down the hill again and we had a wander around the centre and went tweezers shopping, don't ask. (I can explain why! Tom lost my whole toiletry bag a couple of days before :p - Vera) We also met a couple of student types whose job seemed to be to help lost looking tourists with hangovers, ideal! They directed us to 'the world's oldest funincular', not sure about that but it was certainly terrifying. At the top of that one we found more great views, lots of street art, lots of postcard sellers and Beethoven Street, complete with piano staircase.
      After a spot of tea we hopped back on the bus to Santiago.

      Unfortunately our fuzzy morning heads had meant we had managed to bring the camera without its memory card, rationing us to only a dozen or so photos for one of South America's most photogenic cities, bugger. It also means those few photos are stuck on the camera until such time as we can find a cable to fit it. Watch this space.      Read more

      Valparaiso wird auch Joya del Pacifico genannt. Juwel des Pazifik. Das zumindest erzählt uns der Bootsführer bei einer Hafenrundfahrt. Vom Meer aus betrachtet leuchtet die Stadt nachts halbkreisförmig in einer Bucht und all die Lichter, die sich die Hügel hochziehen, glitzern wie eine mit Juwelen besetze Kette. Tagsüber ist von diesem Glanz wenig zu sehen.Read more

      Premier matin dans cette Auberge fort accueillante !! Après une nuit agitée, quelques gros ronfleurs dont un de nous trois (on ne dira pas qui, mais il est blond), nous aurions eu de quoi nous réveiller de mauvais poil, c'était sans savoir qu'un brunch digne des plus grands gourmets de Paris nous attendait ! Là, pas un bruit, chacun était concentré sur son assiette, on pouvait entendre les mouches voler !

      Après s'être restauré, il était temps pour nous de se mettre à jour avec les posts Facebook, nous avions tous les 3 plus ou moins 3 jours de retard et l'on sait que vous êtes nombreux à nous suivre (non, pas du tout la grosse tête). Chacun s'attèle à ses jours avec le transfert de photos des uns et des autres afin de vous garder le meilleur, ainsi que la petite vidéo qui va bien.

      Résultat, le temps d'une douche nous décollons vers 16h... Certes le brunch du matin était copieux mais vous ne connaissez pas les bêtes, il nous fallait rapidement trouver de quoi manger un truc sur le pouce. Nous avons donc au détour de ruelles plus colorées les unes que les autres, trouvé une charmante petite brasserie avec une hôte tout sourire qui nous a ravi les papilles par sa citronnade maison juste incroyable (la menthe émincée pour apporter le gout mais aussi la couleur verte qui rappelait pourquoi nous étions là #Letstreep). Petit aparté sur les cadres plus coquins les uns que les autres (Romain était ravi, lui qui est à crans ces derniers temps... :) ).

      La balade se poursuit tout le long de la fin de journée. Le shérif de la ville n'est pas un homme avec des santiags mais bien un pinceau, seul l'art gouverne ici. L'appareil photo chauffe tant il y a à faire ! Il y a tellement à faire que nous prenons un bus qui arpente les collines, ruelles typiques, on en prend plein les yeux.

      Tout contents nous rentrons à l'auberge pour un petit apéro bien mérité sur le rooftop (vin rouge, charcuterie, fromage, on reste français...). Là, émerveillement, une lune énorme, même les hôtes n'avaient jamais vu la lune d'aussi prêt, moment magique avec du Coldplay :) !

      Nous dinons dans un sushi, dernier restaurant du quartier (la pizzeria était en rupture de fromage, bah voyons... ^^!).
