      Cajón del Maipo

      I drove 2 hours into the Andes from Santiago. I reached “Lo Valdés”, almost at the end of the road. Not much people live here.
      As it is low season, I stayed by myself at a cabin, and enjoyed beautiful hikes. First, El Morado National Monument, and secondly the Arena Park 😊✨
      I am at awe with the beautiful landscapes and huge mountains. For sure this is something I will do each time I visit Chile ❤️      Read more

      Day 10

      Exploring outside Santiago

      By the 9th of January we were finally ready to start our roadtrip. Our first aim was to spend a few days exploring outside Santiago. We initially set off in the direction of Termas Valle de Colina, a campsite with hot springs. Unfortunately we were stopped by the Chilean police at San Gabriel who had closed the road due to a landslide.

      Feeling deflated, we turned around and pulled into a nearby tiny empty village to look up our map. A friendly local Fran pulled up beside us on her quad with her little daughter and asked if we were lost. After we explained the situation, she kindly invited us to explore her family fundo which turned out to be a massive walnut farm. After a picturesque lunch by the river in the fundo, we visited closeby town San Jose de Maipo and Casa chocolate in San Antonio, an artisan chocolate shop set in a Hansel and Gretel like house. That evening we stayed at our first campsite Los Nogales de Roan Jase which had a astronomy observatory. Unfortunately, we learnt that the moon would be too bright to have a good starry night view. The campsite owners had two friendly mischievous dogs who loved to steal food out of our neighbours Dave and Gail's tent.

      The next day we headed to the coast, west of Santiago via Pompaire, a touristy pottery village. We passed through a number of seaside towns before finding a wild camping spot near El Quisco which provided us with an amazing sunset over the ocean.

      On our third day we continued up the coast towards Valparaiso, stopping off at Quintay a coastal village with beautiful beach.

      That night we decided it safer to stay at nearby Laguna Verde as we had heard reports of car theft and crime in Valparaiso. In the morning we got the local bus in to Valparaiso which was an adventure in itself and completed a walking tour of the street art with our guide Sebastian before heading back to Santiago for the night.

      Enjoy the street art in UNESCO town Valparaiso but be aware of safety

      Baños Colina ist ein Thermalbad in der Gemeinde San José de Maipo, etwa 100 km südöstlich von Santiago de Chile. Es ist rund um die Uhr geöffnet.
      Eintritt pro Person: 10 € für 4 Stunden, 15 € für 24 Stunden.
      Es gibt dort viele einfache Stellplätze, auch für Zelte. Lagerfeuer und Grillen waren im April 2024 erlaubt. Die Becken sind umso heißer, je weiter oben sie sich befinden. Im Haus bei den Becken befinden sich Toiletten und kalte Duschen.

      Baños Colina is a thermal spa in the municipality of San José de Maipo, about 100 km east of Santiago de Chile. It is open 24 hours.
      Entry per person: €10 for 4 hours, €15 for 24 hours.
      There are many simple pitches there, including for tents. Campfires and barbecues were allowed in April 2024. The pools are hotter the higher up they are. There are toilets and cold showers in the house near the pools.      Read more

      Cajón del Maipo

      Bevor ich gleich weiter gehen muss, berichte ich noch schnell von gestern:
      Am Sonntag ziehen die Hauptstädter raus aufs Land. Somit befand ich mich mit ihnen auf dem Weg in den Cajón del Maipo südöstlich von Santiago. Während der Dunst am Morgen die Sicht verwehrte, klarte es bei Ankunft im Gebirge auf. Was ich zu sehen bekam war schon fast kitschig-schön. Auf dem Rio Maipo kann man raften, in den Bergen wandern und klettern und die Radfahrer treffen sich hier auch. Am Eingang zum Park El Morado hinterließ ich meinen Rucksack nicht, womit klar war, dass ich heute wohl nicht zurückzukehren beabsichtigte. Exakt. Ich hatte Verpflegung für drei Tage dabei. Der Aufstieg zur Lagune war einfach. Mit meinem Gepäck erhielt ich alle Aufmerksamkeit der Sonntagswanderer. So kamen wir auch schnell ins Gespräch. Der Ranger verstand keinen Spaß und trieb alle Wanderer am Abend talwärts. Da war nichts mit Verstecken. Also nahmen mich die vier in ihrem Wagen mit und luden mich in San José ab, wo ich inzwischen eine Herberge gebucht hatte. San José ist sehr touristisch. Am Abend saß ich auf der Plaza und genoss die beste Cazuela der vergangenen Wochen. Das Beste daraus gemacht.Read more

      Day 82

      Off from Santiago

      We woke up in the morning and had our breakfast at the hotel. Hristo and Maria went to pick up the car while we waited at the hotel. It took them about 1.5 hours to get the car. As soon as they came back we were out and loaded our bags in the car. Just in time as we were parked in a forbidden zone and we saw the parking check as soon as we started to drive. Maybe our luck was finally changing!!
      We drove to the police station and got my case number for the theft case. After that, we drove to the main police station to get a copy of my case file but unfortunately we were just a few minutes late. They were closed for the day. We then drove for a few kms outside of Santiago and stopped for lunch around 1:40 pm.
      The place Casa Bosque was amazing. Very beautifully carved from wood, each and every corner was tastefully decorated with an elf and troll theme.      Read more

      Cajón del Maipo

      Heute zog es Natalia und mich wieder in die Natur raus. Eine Freundin von Natalia hatte ihr empfohlen zum Cajón del Maipo zu fahren; eine Schlucht im Südosten der Anden. Da man ohne Auto dort nicht hinkommt, buchte Natalia uns eine Tour. Was ich nicht richtig verstanden hatte war, dass die Tour für Brasilianer und somit auf portugiesisch war. Da der Guide aber wusste, dass ich kein Portugiesisch spreche, durfte ich neben ihm sitzen und bekam alles auf Spanisch übersetzt. Da sein Chilenisch aber sehr schnell war und er immer die Hälfte der Wörter wegließ oder einfach keine Pause zwischen den einzelnen Wörtern machte, verstand ich die portugiesische Version fast besser. Da sein portugiesisch nicht so gut war sprach er nämlich fast alles Spanisch aus, aber eben langsamer und deutlicher.

      Wir hielten in verschiedenen Tälern des Flusses Maipo an und hatten wunderschöne Aussichten auf die Anden. Das eigentliche Ziel war der Stausee „El Yeso“. Dort hatten wir ein sehr leckeres Picknick und fuhren danach wieder zurück nach Santiago.      Read more

      Embalse de Yeso end of the lake

      We drove all the way to the end of the lake. Further, we could see the mountains rising higher and the road continued across the mountains towards Argentina. We stopped for a while at the end. There were a lot of empty trucks going towards Argentina so we decided to go back towards the middle of the lake where there was a parking a bit off the main road. Hristo and Maria decided to walk to the lake while I drove the car to the parking.Read more

      El Yeso is a reservoir located in the Andes, in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile. It is formed by the damming of the Yeso river, part of the Maipo river basin.
      El Yeso reservoir, along with the nearby Laguna Negra, is a major source of drinking water for Santiago.

      Vallé Nevado - Journée ski

      Malgré notre départ en novembre 2017 pour ce merveilleux voyage, nous étions frustrés de louper notre semaine annuelle au ski. Il nous fallait prendre notre revanche et c’est chose faite ! Aujourd’hui c’est donc de bonne heure que nous prenons la route, direction la station Vallée Nevado à 1h30 de route de Santiago. C’est une station assez modeste par rapport à ce que nous connaissons en France mais le domaine skiable est largement suffisant pour se faire plaisir sur une journée. Nous arrivons non loin de la station, dans un petit bled recommandé par Chris notre hôte, afin de louer du matériel à faible coût. Nous ne serons pas déçus, c’est à l’image de l’Amérique latine, des petites cases avec du matériel qui a quelque peu vécu, sans compter que les skis et snow ne sont pas fartés ni à notre taille, mais ça fera très bien l’affaire pour une journée. Bref on file donc au pied des pistes pour récupérer nos forfaits (moitié prix le mardi) et c’est parti pour le kiff d’une journée de glisse. J’oubliais de préciser que nous avons pris soin d’avoir les meilleures conditions, le temps est donc magnifique avec un soleil sublime et pas de vent, petit bémol malgré tout sur la qualité de la neige, mais on fera avec !! Quel kiff d’enfiler les skis et snow pour les deux cocos ! La première piste est toujours marquée par un peu d’appréhension mais chacun prend rapidement ses marques, même Pierre qui s’essaie au snow pour la deuxième fois seulement ! Nous sommes mardi il n’y a donc personne sur les pistes et zéro attente aux remontées mécaniques, bref c’est le rêve. Nous essayerons de nous filmer en drone mais pas évident avec la vitesse et la perte d’altitude soudaine. On déjeunera en haut des pistes, face à un point de vue plutôt sympa, au menu ça sera sandwich, le porte monnaie n’est pas extensible 😜 ! On profitera à fond jusqu’à la fermeture à 17h. Bilan de nombreuses gamelles, surtout pour Romain et une journée de kiff total. On pendra une petite bière face à la montagne avant de rentrer sur Santiago, dodo de bonne heure on est claqué !!Read more
