      The Waterfall Route

      Today we biked the Waterfall Route. We rented bikes from our hotel and then set off on our journey (Angus was in charge of navigation...of course 😂). Luckily it was a very straight forward path that was mainly downhill and there were some bike paths. The bikes themselves were a little odd with some gears not changing properly and the kickstand being upside down; however, they made it through the journey successfully so that's the main thing!

      The first stop on the route was at Cascada Agoyan! This was a double waterfall and it had the option to add some adventure! So naturally, we decided to zipline across the waterfall superman style and then take a cable car back! The zipline was epic (it was my first time!) and it was so cool to fly along looking at such a nice view. The cable car was also a good way to take in the view fully on the way back.

      The second waterfall on our journey was Manto De La Novia. This one was larger and we were able to hike down to the waterfall so we were close enough to get slightly sprayed! Angus saw a little green snake on the way down the hike but luckily he slithered away before I saw it (thank god). We also saw a few other smaller waterfalls on the way.

      The last and most epic waterfall was Pailon Del Diablo. There are two different entrances to the falls, one that allows you to walk down these platforms/stairs and the other that has a suspension bridge and a view of the waterfall from above. We first went the platforms route where we had a 20 minute walk through the jungle before reaching the waterfall. Once we were there we explored the different viewing platforms and I was blown away by the scale of the waterfall. We then decided to take the trail that led to behind the waterfall but we literally had to crawl through a cave on our hands and knees. It was quite an adventure. From the other route it was a much shorter journey to the falls. We walked over a few suspension bridges and had an epic view from the top. We then took the trail behind the falls again and from this side of the park, you could get completely soaked and touch the waterfall (see video). I went underneath and was drenched in seconds and had puddles in my shoes the rest of the day (totally worth it... although the water washed off my sunscreen and now I'm slightly burnt)!

      We then returned home by riding in the back of this truck with our bikes before heading out to the hot springs! This was the perfect recovery activity after a long day. We were there with hardly any tourists and almost all locals. We had to wear swim caps and mine was highlighter yellow. We then jumped from the hot pool to the cold pool to the hottest pool to the mountain run off (freezing cold water pooled into a shower sort of thing off the edge of the mountain). Sticking with the waterfall theme, the hot springs were right next to a beautiful waterfall that had been lit up with different colours at night. Since there was no secure storage we didn't get any pictures... But just trust that it was epic and a very relaxing way to end the day. We then got dinner and it was delicious!       La Ruta de las Cascadas

      Von Baños fahren wir entlang der Ruta de las Cascadas nach Puyo. 60 Kilometer, 60 Wasserfälle. Einige sind von der Straße aus zu sehen, nicht aber der Pailón del Diablo - der wahrscheinlich bekannteste Wasserfall in der Gegend. Es regnet schon den ganzen Morgen, aber halb so wild. Auch ohne Regen würden wir nicht trocken bleiben. Bis wir durch die Höhle gekraxelt sind und hinterm Wasserfall stehen, sind wir klatschnass. Gewaltige Wassermassen kommen hier runter.Read more

      Cloudforest

      Wir sind jetzt zwei Nächte in Baños, was soviel wie „Thermalbad“ oder „warmes, heiliges Wasser“ bedeuten soll. Nur zweieinhalb Stunden Fahrtstrecke vom Chimborazo Nationalpark entfernt, ist man auf einmal im Wolkenwald, also im Cloudforest. Eddie hatte schon recht als er sagte, dass Ecuador alles zu bieten hat. Ein verhältnismäßig „kleines“ Land mit enormem Abwechslungsreichtum und sagenhafter landschaftlicher Schönheit!

      Eddie hat sich heute etwas Tolles für uns einfallen lassen - wir durchstreiften den Wolkenwald und beobachteten viele wunderschöne Vögel! Es gibt hier in Ecuador 1700 registrierte Vogelarten, alleine 130 verschiedene Kolibri Arten! Kann man sich das vorstellen? Also ich nicht 😂😜
      Und erst die Blumen 🥰 vielfältig, farbenfroh und teilweise enorm riesig. Es ist wie im botanischen Garten, auch von der Feuchtigkeit her und des warmen Klimas wegen!
      Das heutige Endziel war der Pailón del Diablo, also der „Kessel des Teufels“ - ein Wasserfall, der seinem Namen alle Ehre macht!      Read more

      Day 22

      Baños - la puerta de El Dorado

      8 Uhr holten uns Javier und sein Freund am Hotel ab und wir fuhren gemeinsam in die Stadt zum Frühstück. Auf dem Weg hielten wir an, um Touren für den Tag zu buchen, da Javiers Freund zurück nach Ambato musste und wir deshalb kein Auto mehr hatten.

      Die erste Tour sollte 10:30 Uhr starten, also blieb noch entspannt Zeit fürs Frühstück. Wir gingen in ein ecuadorianisches Restaurant und probierten Lapingacho. Ein Frühstücksgericht mit Reis, Wurst, Ei und gebratenem Kartoffelbrei. Dazu gab es Saft und Kaffee. Wir wurden gefragt, ob wir unseren Kaffee mit Milch möchten und waren erstaunt, als dann nur eine Tasse mit heißer Milch serviert wurde. Diesmal gab es keinen Filterkaffee sondern Kaffeepulver zum selbst anrühren. Nicht so lecker. Aber für 3$ für das gesamte Menü völlig ok.

      Da wir nach dem Frühstück immer noch Zeit und Lust auf einen guten Kaffee hatten, gingen wir noch in ein Café. Wir bestellten jeder einen Cappuccino und kamen am Cheesecake mit Maracuja nicht vorbei.

      10:30 Uhr trafen wir am Büro des Reiseveranstalters ein und liefen dann gemeinsam mit unserem Guide ein Stück, um zu unserem Fahrzeug zu kommen. Dies war eine Art offener Partybus. Denn bereits in der ersten Minute wurden wir mit lautem Reggaeton beschallt. Was wir in dem Moment sogar noch ganz witzig fanden.

      Die erste Tour führte uns zum Rio Verde. Beim ersten Halt entschieden wir uns dafür Ziplining über das Tal zu machen und auf dem Rückweg über eine teilweise gläseren Brücke zu laufen. Man hätte wirklich einen tollen Blick.

      Danach besuchten wir eine kleine Manufaktur für Süßigkeiten aus Guave. Uns wurden kurz die Prozeßschritte erklärt, danach konnte man allerlei Dinge im Shop kaufen.

      Im Anschluss ging es weiter zum Pailon the Diablo, was auf deutsch Teufelspfanne heißt.
      Die Gegend hat diesen Namen, da die Felsen um den dortigen Wasserfall wie ein Teufel aussehen, zumindest mit ein wenig Fantasie. In dieser Gegend wanderten wir ein wenig herum und bestaunten den Wasserfall und das Tal drumherum.

      Gegen 13:30 Uhr ging es für uns zurück nach Baños. Natürlich wurden wir weiterhin mit lauter Musik beschallt. Im Ort angekommen, suchten wir nach einem Platz zum Mittagessen. Wir hatten panierten Maniok mit Guacamole und dazu einen Saft.

      Nach einer kurzes Pause ging es für uns weiter zur nächsten Tour. Unsere Fahrt zum Casa del Arbol oder die Schaukel am Ende der Welt wurde wieder von lautem Reaggeton begleitet. Leider waren die Berge wolkenbehangen, sodass uns der atemberaubenden Blick ins Tal verwehrt blieb. Das Schaukeln wollten wir uns allerdings nicht entgehen lassen. An einer Art Baumhaus hingen zwei Schaukeln, mit denen man sozusagen über den Rand der Welt hinausschauckeln konnte. Dabei wird man von einem Mann mit vollem Körpereinsatz angeschubst, sodass man schon ein bisschen Angst bekommen kann. Als wir dran waren, zog der Himmel sogar etwas auf, sodass man einen kurzen Blick in die Berge erhaschen konnte.

      Die Rückfahrt hatte mittlerweile etwas von Folter, da wir weiterhin mit lauter Musik beschallt wurden. Erschöpft von den Erlebnissen entschieden wir die letzte Tour ausfallen zu lassen. Wir hätten vermutlich angefangen zu weinen bei einem weiteren Bad Bunny Song auf voller Lautstärke. Der Besitzer unseres Hotel wunderte sich scheinbar auch schon, wo wir blieben, denn er schrieb uns eine Nachricht, ob alles gut sei.

      Wir probierten stattdessen eine Empanada mit Schokolade und aßen zum Abendessen eine Hühnersuppe. Javier wollte uns noch überzeugen, mit ihm Salsa tanzen zu gehen, aber wir waren einfach zu müde.      Read more

      Wir erreichen Baños pünktlich mit der Hälfte der Einwohner Ecuadors aufs Wochenende und führen uns einen der ansässigen Wasserfälle zu Gemüt. Der Wasserfall ist hoch, schnell, laut, spritzig und nass. Allesamt gute Wasserfalleigenschaften.

      Baños de Agua Santa

      We got ready, checked out and had a small breakfast before going to the tour agency. We were a little bit early but so was the tour guide, Leonardo and the other person joining the tour. His name is Peter from Linz in Austria and he's on a 1 month trip to celebrate his 40th birthday. He's well traveled and it was fun chatting with him. When we got our equipment and he got into the harness he mentioned that he's scared of heights... He also asked if he can have another harness because the one he got had a small rip. The guide said that it's fine 😁

      With a taxi we did the 20 minute drive to the waterfalls where we got an introduction on how to use the harness and ropes. Our guide was really good, took his time to explain the handling and what we're going to do. I've lost a bit my concentration when I saw masses of sandflies on my ankle 😩 But we finished the preparation and walked about 400 metres up along a river until we reached a waterfall of 15 metres. I went first and after going slowly hung into the rope and harness and descended in the waterfall. The last metre we released the rope and let us fall into the water. Afterwards followed Peter who did it similar to me and in the end Julia who went down super fast and easy 😁 After we finished we waited for Leonardo to set up the rope for the next waterfall when we heard a loud splash... The guy is the group after us had released the rope after a few metres and fell down into the shallow pool 😳 We were shocked but luckily nothing had happened. Then we also saw that they went without the safety rope... Leonardo explained that many of the guides just don't care 🙈☠️

      We continued on to the second and third one before having a little walk and one where we were let down by our guide. Then it was time for the highlight of the tour, going down a 45 metres waterfall. We needed to wait for the tour ahead of us so we had way too much time to think... So when it was our turn we were a little nervous 😬 I went first and had a little trouble with hanging into the rope as it was too long. Leonardo fixed it and I made the descent of 5 metres before hanging only in the rope. After a few metres I got the hang of it and felt comfortable, it was an amazing feeling and view being right under and behind the waterfall 🥰 It took some time for me, same for Peter, just Julia rushed down the rope while we were watching her almost shocked 😲😅 But she had it under control and landed safe and sound a few seconds after starting. We walked back up where Leonardo waited for us to bring us back to town by taxi. We got off at the main street because we wanted to take a bus to the most popular waterfalls of Baños, El Pailon del Diablo. Peter decided to join us as he had nothing else to do and was interested.

      It was a short and very scenic drive of 20 minutes where we exchanged with Peter about traveling and destinations. Then the bus stopped right in front of the entrance and we walked down into the valley where we got the first glimpse of the waterfall 🥰 The closer we got the mightier, louder and wetter it got. There was a well made walkway leading through a cave where you needed to crawl through and ultimately right underneath the waterfall. We walked back and found a hanging bridge with great views to the waterfall and the gorge. Afterwards we walked back up to the entrance where we directly caught a bus to Baños town. There we split ways with Peter and quickly relocated to our new hotel which was close to the bus stop to go to the Treehouses.

      It was a 45 minutes drive in the bus and just as we went on board it started raining heavily and the views that we had all day started to hide behind clouds 🙈 The "Casa del Árbol" are located high above the town on the mountain range. When we arrived the rain had gotten less but it was still very cloudy and we were done with the attraction in 15 minutes. But they had a nice cafeteria, so we ordered a hot chocolate, maduro con queso (banana filled with cheese) and choclo (Ecuadorian corn knob). Meanwhile it lighted up a bit and we got some glimpses of the volcano Tungurahua. After an hour that we spent on the swings and cable lift we took the bus back down to properly check in to our hotel.

      Then we went to town to book a tour for tomorrow and have dinner. We had found an Ecuadorian restaurant with good reviews and fair prices. And - as we were deep in the Andes - a perfect opportunity to try guinea pig 😬 They had so many interesting choices on the menu that it was rather difficult to decide. The foods that we had chosen were all delicious! Especially the Avocado soup was something else.       Ruta de las Cascadas

      Wir kehren zurück ins Landesinnere, überqueren die Anden und erreichen an deren Ostsflanke die Kleinstadt Baños de Agua Santa. Sie ist bei Touristen sehr beliebt und bietet ein großes Angebot an Outdooraktivitäten.
      Wir mieten uns Fahrräder und fahren auf der sogenannten Ruta de las Cascadas in Richtung Osten, immer entlang des Río Pastaza und die meiste Zeit bergab. Ihren Beinamen trägt die Straße, da sie an zahlreichen Wasserfällen vorbei führt. Einige können wir während der gemütlichen Fahrt auf der anderen Seite des Tals beobachten und für andere steigen wir vom Rad und unternehmen eine kleine Wanderung.
      Unseren ersten Stopp machen wir nahe der Cascada Manto de la Novia und mit Hilfe einer historischen, schwebenden Seilbahn namens Tarabita überqueren wir das Flusstal. Dabei können wir eine ganz besondere Perspektive des Wasserfalls inklusive Regenbogen entdecken. Auf der anderen Seite angekommen, steigen wir hinab zum Fuß der Kaskade und treffen unterwegs auf ein zotteliges Lama mitten im Regenwald.
      Einige Kilometer weiter stromabwärts erreichen wir das Highlight des heutigen Tages. Nach einer weiteren kurzen Wanderung durch den Wald erwartete uns der Pailon del Diablo. Ein imposanter Wasserfall, dem wir durch verschiedene Wege und Treppen ganz nahe kommen können. Sogar so nah, dass wir unsere Regenjacken anziehen und trotzdem ordentlich eingeweicht werden, als wir uns hinter dem Vorhang aus Wasser durch einen schmalen Weg zwängen.
      Hier beenden wir nach etwa 18 Kilometern unsere schöne Fahrradtour und lassen uns auf der Pritsche eines umgebauten LKW zurück nach Baños fahren.      Read more

      Pailón del Diablo

      Wir verlassen das Hochland und fahren nach Baños, das Tor zum Amazonas. Die Stadt liegt idyllisch gelegen auf 1800 m und es herrscht ein mildes, frühlingshaftes Klima.
      Unterwegs im malerischen Pastaza-Tal fahren wir vorbei an imposanten Schluchten, Felsspalten und Wasserfällen. Auf einem „Naturpfad“ erklärt uns Frank wieder viel Interessantes über die unendliche Vielfalt der Obst- und Gemüsesorten in den Gärten. Uns überrascht eine sensationelle Seilbahnfahrt über das tief eingeschnittene Flusstal und eine Wanderung zum gigantischen Wasserfall el Pailón del Diablo – die Schlucht des Teufels. Ein hiesiger Investor hat aus einer Weide einen Bergnebelwald der Superlative in Ecuador geschaffen.
      Unser persönliches Highlight war ein Flug an einer Zipline über den Puerta del Cielo. Über einen Kilometer lang schwebten wir über der Schlucht. Ein unglaubliches Erlebnis.      Read more

      Ci svegliamo presto con la pioggia che batte sulle lamiere 🌧️ e già pregustiamo la possibilità di passare una giornata ad oziare tra le coperte e i divanetti dell’ostello. Ci alziamo per colazione verso le 7.30 e con nostra sorpresa, splende un bellissimo sole ☀️ non ci siamo ancora abituati a questi cambi di meteo 😅

      Andiamo a noleggiare le nostre biciclette 🚲 e iniziamo il nostro tour di mezza giornata. Siamo circondati da montagne verdi e ci sembra di essere tornati a casa. Tuttavia, ci rendiamo conto che non siamo in Svizzera perché le strade sono diroccate e abbastanza pericolose ⚠️ ci sembra di essere in Pakistan 🇵🇰

      Ammiriamo diverse cascate sulla strada fino ad arrivare al Pailón del Diablo. Posteggiamo le bici e iniziamo la camminata 🚶 dopo 30 minuti iniziamo a sentire i rumori assordanti della cascata! La potenza di questa cascata è impressionante. Alcuni lokals ci informano che quando piove, la cascata è ancora più forte. Vi lasciamo giudicare dai video 😅

      Ritorniamo a Banos, pranziamo e raccogliamo le nostre cose. Zaino 🎒 in spalla e andiamo a prendere il bus 🚎 in direzione Quito. Il viaggio dura 3 ore e mezza e alla sera siamo già tornati al nostro amato ostello dove ormai abbiamo passato una decina di notti 😂 siamo di casa e ci riconoscono subito.

      Wir fahren nach Rio Verde, um den Wasserfall "Pailón del diablo" zu besuchen.

      Wir fragen, ob wir am Abend mit den
      🎟️Tickets nochmals Zutritt bekommen, denn abends soll alles schön beleuchtet sein.🤩 Geöffnet ist bis 22 Uhr.

      Nach einer kurzen Besprechung der Mitarbeiter heißt es, ja, in Ordnung!
      Klasse, wir bekommen unsere Tickets mit einem ✍🏼handschriftlichen Zusatz.

      So haben wir die Möglichkeit, den Wasserfall bei Tag und bei "Nacht" anzuschauen.😃👍      Read more
