One of my favourite books is All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and it is set in St Malo, an old port city in Brittany surrounded by granite walls. It has been a dream of mine to visit this place and it did not disappoint. St-Malo has the highest tides in Europe and the ocean can rise 13 metres in 6 hours. If you walk along the promenade when the tide is out, you simply can not fathom how the water could travel in over a kilometre and rise up over the huge sea wall - until you come back later in the day, and there it is. In one location there was a lovey sandy beach with a natural swimming pool and a 8 metre diving board and when we returned in the afternoon, the actual board was under water. The old city is wonderful to explore and many beautiful old buildings line the seafront.Read more

Okay, schon wieder eine alte Stadt aber diesmal Wege ohne Kopfsteinpflaster. Das fanden die Füße super und ich bin von der Stadt begeistert. Nicht so viele alte Gebäude aber doch alles sehr schön hergerichtet.

    Day 4-Mont St Michel to St-Malo, 35miles

    April 19, 2016 in France ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

    Part 1

Awoke to another glorious cloudless sky and left early to get to St Malo by lunch. The best ride so far. Completely flat, along the coast and with a slight tail wind which any cyclist will tell you is heaven when on a bike. From one small town to another within a couple of hours I rolled into St-Malo which is a large town with an Old town by the harbour that is surrounded by a huge medival wall. Amazing place and somewhere you could easily spend a long weekend or even a week with the kids if you have any. Great restaurants, bars, history plus amazing beaches.

After a few hours around St Malo it was time for another quick cheat and a 3 hour training journey to Le Mans via Rennes. Got a little confused at the change over in Rennes and very nearly ended up going to Paris. Really need to learn some basic French!

    Onto part 2...

    A Night in the Citadel

    September 29, 2017 in France ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Our short time in the Channel Islands has come to an end. It had certainly been an interesting experience and unlike any other place we had visited before. The strange mix of English and French culture was intriguing. Would we ever return to these islands ? Probably not, but who can say for certain.

We boarded a large ferry at St Peter Port and first travelled back to Jersey, before continuing on our way to St Malo. By the time we arrived in St Malo the daylight was fading. Fortunately our hotel for the night was quite close to the ferry terminal. A group of us formed a walking peloton and dragged our luggage around the citadel wall to the first gate we could find. We then had to navigate the rough cobblestones, hoping that the wheels on our bags would not collapse.

Although we had been to St Malo several times before, we had never stayed inside the city walls. That night marked the end of section four of our adventure. Tomorrow morning our group will begin to disperse on their own different individual travels. It will be somewhat difficult not having so many wonderful friends to share each day with.

    1995 Saint-Malo

    July 1, 1995 in France ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C
