      Die rosafarbene Stadt

      Toulouse
      Mit Bus und Metro ging es völlig unkompliziert in etwa einer halben Stunde für 1,80€ direkt ins Stadtzentrum. Da wir noch mal richtig auf die Pyrenäen blicken wollten, sind wir zuerst zum Kaufhaus Lafayette, weil es dort in der 6. Etage eine Terrasse mit Aussicht gibt. Diese ist aber nicht mehr kostenlos, also genehmigen wir uns einen frischen Orangensaft (nicht ganz preiswert 😅), um einen ersten Blick auf die Stadt zu genießen. Die Sicht in die Ferne ist leider eher trüb.
      Dann bummeln wir von einer Sehenswürdigkeit zur nächsten: Le Capitole (das beeindruckende Rathaus- innen reich geschmückt), Le Donjon, die Basilika Saint-Sernin (größtes erhaltenes romanisches Gebäude in Frankreich)… Natürlich spazieren wir an der Garonne und den Kanälen entlang, unter anderem zum „Treffpunkt“ des Garonne-Seitenkanals und des Canal du Midi (so etwas wie Halbzeit für uns 😉). Uns hat auch Toulouse sehr gut gefallen, vor allem wie entspannt es wieder war. Oder liegt das vielleicht an uns?🤔😅

      Ein lohnender Abstecher

      Montech - Montauban - Toulouse (88km)
      Heute Morgen haben wir erstmal unsere eigentliche Route verlassen und sind an einem anderen Kanal, der die Garonne mit dem Tarn verbindet, 12 Kilometer (aber 9 Schleusen!) nach Montauban gefahren, das genauso wie Toulouse als „rosafarbene Stadt“ bezeichnet wird. Sie thront über dem Tarn, den man eigentlich über die Pont-Vieux (stammt aus dem 14. Jahrhundert, wurde aber mehrfach erneuert und gerade auch wieder instand gesetzt) überquert. Besonders sehenswert ist der place Nationale mit Arkaden, schönen Gebäuden mit den typischen Ziegelsteinen und einem „Wasserspiegel“ (wie in Bordeaux), der „nebelartig“ erneuert wird.
      Zurück nach Montech und damit am Garonne-Seitenkanal rollen wir zur nächsten Großstadt. Die Landschaft wird offener, am Horizont tauchen die Pyrenäen mit ihrer beeindruckenden Silhouette auf und irgendwie merkt man, dass es städtisch wird. Die Fahrt in und durch die große Stadt ist wieder einmal spannend aber eigentlich unkompliziert - es geht immer an Kanälen entlang, sehr entspanntes Radeln.😁 Nur dann geht es wieder raus. Unser Campingplatz liegt etwas außerhalb - fast direkt am Flughafen 🤨! Die erste Enttäuschung nach dem langen und heißen Tag legt sich allmählich. Morgen werden wir mit Bus und Metro ins Zentrum fahren und Toulouse „erobern“!      Read more

      Toulouse - La ville rose

      Endlich angekommen in der Stadt, in die ich mich vor 18 Monaten verliebt habe. Ich bin ein bisschen geschockt ob der vielen Menschen hier. Unfassbar, wie voll und lebendig die Stadt ist. Dagegen war Paris ein Dorf. Nach dem Mittagessen gegenüber vom Blumenladen Verte et rose bin ich erstmal in zwei Schmuckläden, ach wie ich sie liebe, und dann in meine Lieblingskirche Saint-Étienne geflüchtet, um etwas Ruhe zu finden. Von dort aus bin durch die Stadt gebummelt und habe mich weiteren kulinarischen Genüssen hingegeben. So viele Patisserien, Restaurants und Bars habe ich noch nie auf einem Fleck gesehen. Nachdem ich Saint-Étienne, eine wunderschöne Kathedrale in romanisch/gothischem Stil besucht hatte, bin ich pflichtbewusst auch zur größten noch erhaltenen romanischen Kirche Frankreichs gepilgert und die ist wirklich riesig. Sitzt man ganz hinten, sieht man den Altar nur als Punkt (Bild 6). Übrigens heißt die Stadt La ville en rose, weil überwiegend Terrakottasteine verbaut wurden, die tatsächlich rosé leuchten.Read more

      Les Jardins de Toulouse 🌷🌳

      Da sich das Wetter heute zum Glück von seiner besseren Seite zeigte, konnte ich heute einen Ausflug in die wunderschönen Gärten machen, die sich in der ganzen Stadt finden 🌺⛲️ Ich startete im Jardin Japonais Pierre Baudis, dem japanischen Garten der Stadt. Dieser Garten ist mit sehr viel Liebe zum Detail gestaltet und in ihm finden sich an jeder Ecke wunderbare Elemente, wie verschiedene Pflanzen und Blumen, ein Zen-Garten, Statuen oder ein Koi-Teich, über welchen eine kleine rote Brücke führt. Danach war ich noch in drei weiteren Gärten, angefangen beim Jardin du Grand Rond, welcher, durch zwei grüne Brücken, die über die Straßen führen, mit dem Jardin Royal und dem Jardin des Plantes verbunden ist. Der Jardin du Grand Rond befindet sich nämlich in der Mitte eines großen Kreisverkehres, wie man vielleicht auch aus dem Namen des Gartens schließen kann 😄🚗 Zusammen formen die Gärten eine Anlage, die 1752 im Rahmen eines Handels- und Verschönerungsprojektes, vom Architekten Louis de Mondran, gestaltet wurde. Auch habe ich heute in einem Katzencafé eine leckere Quiche Lorraine zu Mittag gegessen 🥧 und hatte durchgehend flauschige Gesellschaft am Tisch 🐈Read more

      Stop 4 - Toulouse

      Stop 4 - Toulouse

      Nach einer entspannten Zugfahrt und guten Ankunft in Toulouse sind wir direkt zu Alex Wohnung gelaufen.
      Da wir bisher an jedem Ort der Reise Leute kannten, konnten wir teilweise bei diesen unterkommen. So auch bei Alex und seinem Mitbewohner. Wir sind super dankbar für diese Möglichkeiten, weil es natürlich total cool ist so viel Zeit mit den Leuten zu verbringen, aber natürlich auch Geld zu sparen.
      Es ist keine Selbstverständlichkeit uns das zu ermöglichen.
      Michelle freute sich mega Alex wiederzusehen, den sie auf dem Jakobsweg kennengelernt hat. Auch Fee hat sich sehr gefreut ihn kennenzulernen. Alex spielte an dem Tag unseren Touri Guide durch Toulouse und zeigte uns die eher „uncommon & local places“ der Stadt.
      Wir stiegen auf ein Parkhaus und genossen die schöne Aussicht. Danach holten wir uns ein sehr leckeres Haloumi Sandwich und setzen uns damit ans Wasser. Da lernten wir dann auch Alex Mitbewohner kennen. Wir unterhielten uns lange und liefen dann gemeinsam zu einer Jazzbar, wo wir den Abend ausklingen ließen.
      Am nächsten Tag arbeitete Alex erstmal und wir machten die Stadt unsicher. Wir hatten wieder einmal eine Menge Spaß daran durch die Straßen zu schlendern, Witze zu machen und Ramen zu essen 😅
      Das unglaubliche an der Reise ist, dass wir voneinander dachten, dass wir uns sehr gut kennen, doch diese Zeit hat das alles noch mal auf ein ganz anderes Level gebracht. Wir lachen uns schlapp über alles mögliche und keine 2 Sekunden später können wir gemeinsam über das Leben philosophieren, weinen und dann auch ganz schnell wieder lachen.
      Wir sind beide unglaublich dankbar für diese Erfahrung und die Freundschaft 💞
      Am Nachmittag setzten wir uns in einen Park und ließen den Tag mit einer Flasche Sekt ausklingen, ehe wir Alex in einem Restaurant trafen (mega leckeres Essen, absolute Empfehlung) und eine schöne gemeinsame Zeit verbrachten. Als Dankeschön, dass wir bei ihm
      unterkommen konnten, hat er eine Sonnenblume und einen Honig bekommen. Darüber hat er sich auch wirklich sehr gefreut.
      Abends gingen wir auf ein Festival, wo eine französische Band auftrat. Es war wirklich super super cool!!
      Danach fielen wir wirklich komplett fertig ins Bett. Der nächste Tag startete super langsam, trotzdem fuhren wir einmal aus der Stadt raus und genossen die frische Luft und den Wind 🌬️
      Am letzten Abend kochten wir für Alex, seinen Mitbewohner und zwei Freunde. Es gab eine Couscous Bowl von uns (die sehr gut ankam 🤞🏼) und Gesang auf Catalan für uns.
      Es war ein schöner Abschluss unserer Tage in Toulouse.
      Es war traurig heute morgen zu gehen! 😌
      Wir würden jederzeit wieder nach Toulouse fahren. Der Vibe in der Stadt ist wirklich super angenehm und es wohnen viel mehr junge Leute dort, als wir erwartet haben ☺️
      Es ist für jeden eine Reise wert 🥰

      Day 27

      Our Last Day of Cruising

      Today’s destination is our final destination for our canal cruising trip. Toulouse is the Airbus capital and is where Peter undertook his first Airbus course in 1991. However we will not be going to Airbus on this trip and instead will stay 2 days looking around Toulouse city.
      Today is the last day of our lovely canal cruise and will be 33km of cruising including 8 locks along the way. The weather was showery with a few patches of rain but clearing up a bit as the day progressed with a few patches of blue sky as we approached Toulouse.
      Some of the locks were again very scenic with flowers and high green trees. Along the way the canal was often covered with an umbrella of trees making the trip very nice. The first part of the trip was uphill with climbing locks, but then for the final run into Toulouse it was all downhill making the locks a bit easier.
      As we pulled up into the Port Saint-Saveur marina late in the afternoon, this marked the end of our cruising trip and is also the end of this season’s cruising for Pete & Lou. Leander will remain here for the winter while they go back to the UK, and they will be back here next summer to resume their canal travels. As usual canal boat moorings are usually right in the middle of towns and cities, which makes it easy to walk into the city centres.
      Sunday evening in Toulouse is quiet with a lot of places closed but we managed to find one of the public squares with lots of people, bars, and restaurants. So we celebrated over dinner what has been a lovely 6 days of canal boat cruising with our friends - thanks so much Pete & Lou!!
      We don’t fly out of Toulouse for 2 more days, so these will be spent relaxing and looking around Toulouse, and for Carolina will be chance perhaps to do some shopping :-)      Read more

      Day 19

      Last afternoon and evening in Toulouse

      After our sumptuous lunch we decided we needed to increase our steps. Nathalie, our Airbnb host, had suggested the area immediately behind our apartment to explore, telling us it was her favourite part of the city. As it turns out we, had been into the area (Les Carmes) as part of the wine bar tour, but everything looks different at night after a few wines!

      We walked along the main street immediately behind our apartment, passing Notre-Dame de La Daurade, a basilica that was established in 410, when Emperor Honorius allowed the conversion of pagan temples to Christianity. The original building of Notre-Dame de La Daurade was a temple dedicated to Apollo.

      As we meandered through the Les Carmes district we passed some lovely stores, restaurants and wine bars, but most were shut. There were a lot of hairdressers in this area - I spotted at least 5 or 6 within a couple of streets.

      We saw Notre-Dame de La Dalbade, which has a very impressive Tympanum. A Tympanum is the area between the lintel over a doorway and the arch above. We also passed Hôtel d’Ulmo, a Renaissance Hôtel of the 16th century. It has been a listed historical monument since 1925. Another impressive building we passed was Hôtel de Pierre, a very fancy private home. It was impossible to tell if it is still a private home and if it was still inhabited.

      At the end of the street we were in the Salin district. We then did a sharp left and walked back through the Les Carmes district, some of which we had seen the previous Saturday on our wine bar tour. We then headed back to the Main Street that runs across the Pont Neuf bridge, Rue de Metz. I had a hankering for an ice-cream, and we found a great place close by, Madame Bovary, Salon de Thé.

      For our last dinner in Toulouse we went to the Brasserie Les Beaux-Arts, located very close to the Pont Neuf and our apartment. As we had had a very generous lunch, we decided to just have an entree and a dessert, with a bottle of Gaillac wine. It was delicious.      Read more

      Day 17

      Next stop Toulouse

      We had a very relaxed start today as we aren’t due to catch our train to Toulouse until midday. We met for breakfast around 8.30 am and Brigitte informed us that she had won a bottle of wine for tipping the closest to the NZ v Italy match. We had arranged with the hotel for a taxi to pick us up at 10.45am to take us to the station, but the taxi hadn’t arrived by 11am and so Brigitte checked with reception. They contacted the taxi company who said they didn’t have a booking (which was a lie), and the hotel told us this happens all the time. Luckily, Julian, the hotel duty manager, offered to take us.

      We were waiting on the platform at Albi-Ville when a train to Toulouse arrived. We thought it would wait 20 minutes before departing but, as we were getting on, the departure buzzer started sounding. We boarded it anyway. Actually, we boarded it, jumped off, jumped back on and nearly got caught in the doors, not knowing if it was the correct train until a local confirmed it was indeed going to Toulouse. Turns out it was the earlier train but, as our ticket wasn’t assigned seats, we could catch this one. The conductor didn’t care, and I think had been amused by our little spectacle at the station.

      The trip to Toulouse was smooth and quick. On arrival we decided to have lunch at a Brasserie at the station before jumping in a taxi to our Airbnb. We were waiting in the correct spot with an elderly couple, but noticed people waiting closer to where the taxis enter to try and jump the queue - bloody French they love to break the rules. The old couple just ahead of us in the queue told us this happens all the time but they hailed the cab as soon as it entered the area and it came up to them. When the next taxi arrived, the queue jumpers tried to hail it down but we made it clear the taxi was for us and the driver actually told them they were in the wrong spot. So, they moved up to join the official line, making out they hadn’t realised.

      Our trip to the Airbnb was fairly short but there were a number of “near misses” with scooters, bikes and motorcycles - you have to be really careful as no-one seems to follow the road rules, especially the scooters and bikes. They go the wrong way up narrow crowded streets and expect everyone to get out of their way. The taxi driver said it had been much worse after COVID.

      We finally made it to our apartment and we were met by Nathalie, our host, who explained how things worked and gave us some tips about the area. We are situated right opposite the river Garonne and very centrally located, which is ideal when you want to walk everywhere. We went out to grab supplies from the local supermarket and have a bit of a look around. Tonight we have our wine bar tour with Jessica.      Read more
