      Nice, France (Day 4) - Villefranche

      What we did:
      - BOAT DAY!!! Woke up and grabbed bagels on our walk to meet our boat driver Cyrille. Had the boat from 10am - 6pm. Absolutely the best day of our time with Jenna and Joe with sunny 85 degree weather, good company and great drinks (shoutout Joe with the John Daly's).
      - Captain Cyrille was super laid back and his boat was awesome. Turns out he lives on this boat during the summer while his wife and three year old daughter stay back at his house in Beaune. Wild lifestyle. He was going to a tradeshow the next day to try and trade his current boat in for a new one that was one meter bigger… his goal was to do that enough times to end up with a yacht
      - The captain took us all along the French Riviera from Nice to near Monaco with two great swimming stops along the way. We stopped in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat harbour (the cape that we walked around the day before) and Villefranche. The Mediterranean water >>>. So clear and buoyant it was amazing floating around admiring the hilly coastline and stacks of super yachts in the harbor
      - The captain had a paddle board for the group to enjoy, resulting in the chaos of us all trying to get on the board at the same time. Confirmed Trent has zero balance or athleticism as he made everyone crash into the water on each attempt. The captain also had masks for snorkeling through the schools of blue fish.
      - After the boat, the group all showered and headed to the old town in Nice for dinner. We attempted to go to Chez Memer, a restaurant recommended by our wine tour guide, but it was closed. Steph found The Rossettisserie nearby which specialized in French countryside food. We spent a majority of the dinner trying to teach Trent how to say “Merci”. It appears Trent is unable to say it without a southern accent (see video). Jury is still out on whether or not he has it down at this point - I guess we will find out when we return to France in a month!
      - We enjoyed a nightcap of wine and Euchre at the apartment with another Jenna/Joe win. Jenna/Joe - 2 and Steph/Trent 0.

      What we ate:
      - Bagels at Steinglold bagels
      - Delicious Homemade sandwiches with fresh French bread, pesto, tomatoes, avocados, and assorted deli meats
      - Dinner at The Rossettisserie. Trent got the mixed grilled meat plate with mashed potatoes (potatoes on Steph’s request), Steph got the beef plate with ratatouille, Joe got the lamb plate with ratatouille, Jenna got the vegetarian plate with potatoes and ratatouille.

      Fun facts:
      - Trent and Joe decided they don’t want, but in fact need, to be rich as the superyachts and super villas are just so enticing. Business plan to be released winter of 2023. Stay tuned folks, angel investors will be welcome.
      - The houses on Saint Jean Cap Ferrat are 90,000 Euros per square foot! Paul Allen and soccer legend Zlatan live there. The coast is full of celeb homes including Brad Pitt, Elton John, Bono, Tina Turner, and many many more.
      - The world’s third most expensive home is in Villefranche. The Villa Leopolda in Villefranche is valued at $750M. Built for a prior king of Belgium it’s now owned by the banker Edmond Sofra.
      - One of the super yachts we saw had a second massive boat that is the “toy boat” to hold all of the super yacht's playthings. Very casual...
      - 300 days of sunshine on the French Riviera a year. Feels like Chicago has 300 days of clouds.      Read more

      Weihnachtsscam

      Ich wollte bevor ich zurück nach Deutschland komme mir noch einen anderen Weihnachtsmarkt anschauen.
      Also ich mit dem Bus in den Nachbarort, wo mir Poster und Internet eigentlich einen kleinen Markt versprochen hatten.
      Hin und wieder gibt's da angeblich sogar Paraden und Spiele für Kinder etc. Ich habe aber NICHTS gefunden.
      Die wollten mir auch erzählen, dass es eine Krippe beim Rathaus gibt, dass irgendwie in der Zitadelle ist. Da war ich sogar, aber nada.
      Nichts als gruselige Schatten, Skulpturen und eine leere Minikapelle mit Aussicht.
      Neben dem Fußballplatz gab es den Weihnachtsmann, der hier irgendwie das Äquivalent zu dem Teddybären beim Place Garibaldi ist. Aber mehr gibt's hier irgendwie nicht.
      Ich wurde über den Tisch gezogen.
      Eine andere witzige Kapelle wollte 4€ Eintritt. Das war ich aber nicht bereit zu zahlen. Vor allem weil ich nachdem ich die Tür geöffnet hatte schon die ganze Kapelle sehen konnte. Nur Fotos konnte ich dann leider nicht machen. Aber egal.
      Ich hab trotzdem ein paar nette Aussichten gehabt, also schätze ich mal, dass der Trip keine komplette Verschwendung war.

      Garten der Villa Ephrussi

      Cap Ferrat gehört zu den reichsten Gegenden ganz Frankreichs. Hier haben sich vor allem Billionäre prunkvolle Villen gebaut. Ich finde zur Schau getragenen Reichtum zwar ätzend, aber dagegen, hier zu wohnen, hätte ich auch nix einzuwenden. Eine der Villen kann man besichtigen. Mich hat besonders der Garten angezogen und der war riesig und traumhaft. Ich bin durch die 9 Themenbereiche gewandelt, habe eine Pause bei grandioser Aussicht gemacht und den Duft der Fresien genossen. Im Hintergrund lief klassische Musik.Read more

      Never before have we been on anchor with the waves crashing before reaching us. Also we ended up closer to shore and over rocks.       Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild

      The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild was built on a promontory on the isthmus of Cap Ferrat overlooking the Mediterranean Sea between 1907 and 1912 by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild (1864–1934). a member of the Rothschild banking family and the wife of the banker Baron Maurice de Ephrussi, The gardens are classified by the Ministry of Culture as one of the Remarkable Gardens of France, whilst the villa itself has been classified as a monument historique since 1996. Upon her death in 1934, the Baroness donated the property and its collections to the Académie des Beaux-Arts division of the Institut de France. It is now open to the public.

      Doug and Nancy caught the bus for a 30 minute hill top climb from Nice to visit this Villa and gardens which was very interesting and had beautiful views over the bay to Nice. Doug was a bit unsettled by this "playground of the wealthy" ; Nancy said she liked it and could fit right in.....      Read more

      In der Villa kann man sehen, wie es sich hier während der Belle Époque lebte. Geschirr, Möbel, Kleidung etc. Einige Zimmer hatten einen tollen Blick aufs Meer, andere auf den Garten. Ich habe nicht lange verweilt, weil ich hier den angekarrten Touris nicht aus dem Weg gehen konnte. So habe ich nach einem kurzen Besuch des Museumsshops den Bus nach Nizza genommen.Read more

      Day 11

      Cap Ferrat der Weg ist das Ziel

      Um 10 Uhr geht's los . Es sind viele Leute unterwegs. Die schon sehr engen Straßen werden damit noch unbequemer und unwirklicher zum Fahren .
      Entlang der Küste über Eze Richtung Cap Ferrant 25km
      Der angesteuerte Stellplatz erweist sich als Herausforderung .
      Nach vielen Kurven landen wir schließlich unversehrt und sind verwundert, wie viele große Wohnanhänger dort platziert sind .
      Es wohnen dort Schausteller und diese sind sehr hilfsbereit und weisen uns ein schönes kostenloses Plätzchen zu .
      Wir stehen direkt neben dem sehr schönen Strandabschnitt und genießen vormittags noch die Sonne, bevor das Wetter umschlägt und wir uns entschließen einen Radausflug zu machen.      Read more

      Schnorchelausflug

      Unsere AirBnB Gastgeber haben uns zum Frühstück Crossaints und Pain au Chocolates vorbeigebracht, total nett. Ganz entspannt ging es also in den Tag, bevor wir uns am Mittag auf den Weg nach Nizza gemacht haben. Wir hatten einen Schnorchelausflug gebucht und nach der Zuteilung der Ausrüstung ging es 14 Uhr los.
      Zunächst sind wir 25 Minuten mit dem Boot rausgefahren und haben dann in einer Bucht geankert. Ich habe mir einen Abzug ausgeliehen, da ich der Wassertemperatur nicht vertraut habe. Es wäre dann auch ohne gegangen, bereut habe ich es aber nicht.
      Das Wasser war kristallklar und wir haben viele Fische gesehen. Schildkröten wie auf Hawaii gab es hier leider nicht. Ab einem Punkt ging es plötzlich extrem tief runter, da konnten die Taucher ihrem Vergnügen frönen. Das Abtauchen sah auf jeden Fall sehr cool aus!
      Nachdem wir wieder im Hafen angekommen waren, sind wir noch ein bisschen durch das Hafenviertel geschlendert und haben uns noch einen Crêpe gegönnt. Im Anschluss sind wir noch auf einen Aussichtspunkt hoch, so dass wir einen tollen Blick auf Nizza hatten.      Read more

      Today we are anchored off the beautiful little French town of Villefranche-sur-Mer. After breakfast I got the tender across as I had planned to have a mooch about, one thing I did want to see was Rue Obscure, which is a 13th century covered street hidden beneath the buildings in the old town. It's a wonderful atmospheric little street, and you feel transported way back in time as you walk it.
      After that I had a walk up to the Citadel Saint Elme, which now houses three small museums, a military museum, a film museum and the third is more of an art gallery with work by the sculptor Volti.
      All in all a very pleasant and interesting couple of hours, and most importantly to me all completely free.      Read more

      I'm probably getting a bit blasé about some of the ports, as I didn't bother getting off at Villefranche, couldn't be bothered with the tendering. But I have been a number of times and it is a beautiful little town.Read more
