      Kyoto - Day 12

      Today started at Cafe Murmur where Judy and I had honey toast. Mike had mentioned The Philosopher’s Walk so we transited up there with our first destination Higashiyama Jisho-ji. However, the street leading to the temple is full of shops that distracted us from our spiritual destination.

      The temple grounds were magnificent with a variety of view’s and textures. The weather was perfect.

      Eikandō Temple. This was our second temple destination. Unusual for being a Zen temple. One had paintings by competing schools and one room with a path down the middle and two paintings repeating temptations to avoid.

      We had lunch at Breizh Café Crêperie Kyoto enjoying a fee buckwheat crepes. Very tasty. Richard, Jamie and I have gone to one in Paris. Needless to mention, some French Canadians came and sat nearby.

      Dinner was at Yakiniku Yaza where we enjoyed a host of Wagu courses featuring different cuts of meet.      Okumaya devam et

      Essen in Japan

      Vor unserer Abreise wurde ich schon gewarnt, dass es schwierig werden könnte vegetarisch zu essen in Japan. Und was soll ich sagen? Es ist wirklich nicht so leicht und hat schon zu großem Frust geführt, vor allem wenn ich schon hungrig bin und dann einfach nichts finde was ich auch essen will. Dass es viel Fleisch hier gibt stört mich gar nicht. Vielmehr ist es die Art immer ganz beiläufig überall in irgendeiner Weise Fleisch bei zu mischen. So habe ich einen vermeintlichen Gemüsereis bestellt und esse plötzlich Schinken 😅
      Nun ja wir wissen jetzt dass es nicht üblich ist auch vegetarische Gerichte in Restaurants anzubieten also halten wir nach explizit vegetarischen Orten Ausschau oder ich stelle mich eben auf Fleisch ein 😉 und so haben wir jetzt auch schon ein paar wirklich tollen Gerichte gegessen!
      Insgesamt ist die japanische Küche nämlich ganz wunderbar und viel mehr als nur Sushi und Ramen- Suppe. Ja man isst viel rohen Fisch, viel Fleisch und als Beilage meistens Reis oder Nudeln in einer Suppe. Aber meistens besteht ein Gericht aus ganz ganz vielen Bestandteilen die so viele Geschmäcker beinhalten, wirklich toll! Aber schaut euch die Bilder an das beschreibt vieles 😅      Okumaya devam et

      Tag 13: Kyōto

      Gestartet hat unser Tag einem Wechsel zu unser neuen Unterkunft hier in Kyoto. Wir wollten gerne eine Nacht in einem Ryokan, einer traditionell japanischen Unterkunft übernachten. Dazu später mehr.

      Das regnerische Wetter haben wir genutzt, um im Café zu verweilen und ein paar Souvenirs einzukaufen.
      Nachmittags ging es dann für uns zu einer Matcha-Tee-Zeremonie. Neben der richtigen Art Matcha-Tee zuzubereiten, haben wir auch ein wenig über die japanische Kultur gelernt.

      Als wir abends in unserer Unterkunft ankamen, hat bereits unser Gastgeber, ein älterer japanischer Mann, auf uns gewartet. Mit seiner höflichen und witzigen Art hat er uns die wichtigsten Dinge zu dem Ryokan erklärt. So schläft man zum Beispiel auf Matratzen, die auf den Boden liegen. Auch gibt es kein eigenes Bad , sondern man teilt sich das mit den anderen Gästen. Ein Erlebnis war es duschen zu gehen. Zuerst zieht man in seinem Zimmer das Dusch-Outfit an. Dann geht es zum Badezimmer und die Schlappen, die wir bei der Ankunft bekommen haben, werden vor die Tür gestellt. Da es kein Schloss gibt, diene sie als Zeichen, dass gerade besetzt ist. Nachdem man sich abgeduscht hat, geht es in ein heißes Becken. Danach wickelt man sich wieder in sein Dusch-Outfit und schlappt zurück ins Zimmer.      Okumaya devam et

      Kyoto

      We booked 4 nights in Kyoto to give us time to explore the city itself and also use it as a base for seeing some more of west Japan. Kyoto is quite a big city but very different from Tokyo, there are only a few tall buildings here and the style is very much old fashioned Japan rather than the crazy futuristic manga world of Tokyo. On our first day we went to the Imperial palace and its beautiful Japanese style gardens. The palace and other buildings around it are really simply from outside and unfortunately we cannot enter them. For lunch we had our "usual" boxes with unkown content from the supermarket - sometimes it even has some chairs, tables and a microwave to enjoy your meal there. Then we discovered a walking path by the river, an alley full of little pubs and restaurants called Pontocho and the main food market, Nishiki Market. At dusk we went to Gion, the geisha district where lots of people are dressed in traditional clothes (actually all around in Kyoto) kimono with all its accessories such as wooden sandals. There are lots of shops where you can rent a full outfit for the day. We ended the day in the tiniest Thai restaurant where 5 people were already sitting so the the place got full when we sat down too.       Kyoto mit Kaiserpalast

      Wir fahren Hop-on Hop-off, die Sonne brennt und der alte Kaiserpalast hat einen riesigen Garten.

      Praktisch sind die vielen Trinkautomaten, die 24h am Tag zur Verfügung stehen. Man wirft die leere Flasche in die nebenan stehenden Mülleimer und zieht eine neue Flasche, Wasser kostet va. 1€. Alle machen mit und es liegt praktisch kein Müll rum. Es ist das Kontrastprogramm zu Marokko, Deutschland sehe ich ziemlich in der Mitte zwischen Japan und Marokko.Okumaya devam et

      Rainy on Wednesday but we managed to walk around the bamboo forest and just about avoided having our eyes poked out by one of the thousands of umbrellas, rain or shine they love a brolly.

      Took a trip to Nara on Thursday for yet more temples then a visit to the park where hundreds of deer wander around waiting to be fed, nice smell of deer💩 . They have even learnt to bow when someone gives them one of the crackers they sell to feed to them..... someone's bright ideer 😕

      Our last day in Kyoto and we took a stroll through the gardens at the Imperial Palace. It was another public holiday, the sun was out so plenty of people around, especially twitchers. We stood watching them take hundreds of photos but not sure what it was they spotted. Our best guess was a yellow tit ( do your own jokes 😭).      Okumaya devam et

      Goldene Tempel und singende Böden

      Endlich mal ausschlafen...

      Weil wir dieses Hotel für zwei Tag gebucht haben, mussten wir diesmal nicht um 10 Uhr raus sein.
      Das haben wir natürlich voll ausgekostet.

      Der daraufhin ausdiskutierte Schlachtplan startete mit dem Arashiyama Bambuswald.
      Wie wir es schon vermutet hatten, war es leider sehr voll.
      Trotzdem konnten wir die dicken Röhren bestaunen.

      Als nächstes Stand der goldene Tempel auf dem Plan.
      Das Gebäude ist wirklich beeindruckend schön gebaut und auch schön gelegen.
      Nach dem Bau wurde der goldene Tempel als Empfangsraum genutzt, nach dem Tod des Shoguns, seinem Wunsch entsprechend, aber an den buddhistischen Tempel übergeben.

      Als letzten Tagespunkt hatten wir uns Burg Nijo ausgesucht.
      Hier betraten wir den berühmten Nachtigallenboden.
      Also natürlich nicht nur wir, sondern auch die anderen 50 Leute um uns herum.
      Das war vielleicht ein Gezwitscher.

      Die Burg besteht aus 4 Abteilen, die alle ebenerdig hintereinander angeordnet sind.
      Je weiter hinten der Gast empfangen wurde, umso höher war sein anerkannter Rang und die Gunst des Shogun.
      Fotos durfte man drinnen leider nicht machen.

      Auf dem Rückweg stolperten wir über eine britische Craft-Beer-Bar.
      Es folgten amüsante Gespräche mit Japanern und Koreanern.      Okumaya devam et

      Kyoto Day 1

      Up bright and early for exploring Kyoto in the pouring rain - so we opted for a nice cosy hop on hop off sightseeing bus... Unfortunately none of the busses have any indoor seating. haha! They kindly provided us with semi-waterproof ponchos though.

      Nijo castle was amazing, even in the rain. Unfortunately you're not allowed to take pictures of the inside, but we were allowed to photograph our shoes. ;-) There are a lot of places where you have to take your shoes off, which is charming but also makes you hope you don’t have a hole in your socks.

      The Golden temple was also very pretty but very crowded. The real highlight was wandering through the Higashiyama district and up to the Kiyomizu-dera temple at night. It was beautifully illuminated and you really could get lost in a maze of beautiful shrines.

      We then hiked down the hill and back to hunt down some Okonomiyaki but first we stumbled across some actual geishas which is apparently quite rare. They were very striking and really did exude elegance just by the way they walked which was really cool and quite intimidating. Laura also found a new favourite sweet: fried rice balls in sweet soy sauce (Mitarashi Dango).      Okumaya devam et

      Go with the flow - Day 2 in Kyoto 🌸

      After my first night in a capsule hotel - which was surprisingly pleasant :) - I now head off for my second day in Kyoto. And there’s a lot in my list…
      Starting off with wandering through the huge compound of wonderful Murasakino Daitokujicho, then visiting the Imamya Shrine and queuing for real Japanese grilled rice cakes at that cute little restaurants for breakfast - I just had to try them!
      Next: Takeisao (Kenkun) shrine - also beautifully peaceful with just a handful of locals
      And then off the the more lively, touristy Kinkaku-ji Temple & Ryoan-ji Temple with their gardens and cherry blossoms 🌸
      Followed by Arashiyama bamboo forest.
      And finally diner at a hip fast food place.      Okumaya devam et

      Kinkaku-ji Temple d'Or

      C'était une résidence d'un seigneur (Shogun) qui a été transformée en temple par sa volonté après sa mort. L'intérêt principal est l'impressionnant l'édifice doré. Attention foule énorme dont beaucoup de groupes et des écoliers japonais venant voir ce monument unique en son genre. Préférez la fin de journée ou mieux encore pendant l'heure du déjeuner.Okumaya devam et
