Molly’s Great American Loop

We’re Betty & James, along with Luna cat and Moki dog we are cruising America’s Great Loop aboard our boat the Molly Brown. She is a 24’ C-Dory TomCat. We expect it will take us 8 or so months to complete 😀. Läs mer

    3 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Molly Brown dipped her hull in the Atlantic Ocean for the first (and last) time on this trip today. We left just after 06:30 and arrived right at 08:00. Nice easy ride up the coast. It was pretty hazy but we could see the NYC skyline. We didn’t do any exploring as it was a work day but there’s a National Park along the Sandy Hook shore that seems like it would be pretty cool. Ordinarily we would be on the hook and I’d fit visits in but we needed to get groceries so we are at Leonardo State Marina. Nice spot, surrounded by homes so quiet and only takes boats to 30’ … most of which are annual leases…. and very few are liveaboard. From our slip we look straight out to the Verrazano Bridge. Also has a beach area on bay that’s pretty popular with the locals. 39 miles today. Secchi 1.4 in 2.1MLäs mer

  • New York City

    4 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

We had a very foggy ride over to the Big Apple this morning. But we could see blue sky as we arrived. Got the chance to share loopers on M/V Fast Pace’s final crossing of their wake at the Statute of Liberty 🗽. It was pretty choppy so we each did a quick pass while the other took photos and then we headed up the Hudson and they headed up the East River. Once the river narrowed it was much nicer and no traffic which was nice. But strong current!. From the George Washington Bridge to just past the NJ/NY line on the NJ side is the Palisades Interstate Park with a trail running along the river (although not obvious) and another running at the top of the ledge. Moki and I of course had to check it out!! We plan to do one more trail after dinner. More pics later if it or this evening’s sunset produce something interesting. Secchi .4 in 1.2M. 42 miles today.Läs mer

  • Palisades Interstate Park

    5 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Woke this morning to a pretty sunrise peaking thru the clouds. Moki and I set out on another hike… this one to the Women’s Federation Monument. Holy Smokes! That was a hike. But we made it up and back before 8:30. The Women’s Federation BTW were instrumental in halting the quarrying of rock from the Palisades (legislation passed in 1900). We are now underway, headed to a marina for a couple days with easy access to the train for visits with James’s kids. Some pics in the mix from our voyage.Läs mer

  • Welcome to New York !!

    5 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

Despite cruising into New York yesterday we were mostly still in New Jersey and we dropped anchor in the Garden State. But we are now fully planted in the Empire State. We are staying at Half Moon Bay Marina in Croton on Hudson. This is an awesome marina! Super dockmaster and super deckhands. There are 15 other loopers here. We are next to the walkway so have met several. We did have one faux pas today right after arriving… little missy 🐈‍⬛ took off when no one was looking and found herself a bush to take a siesta in. One of the deckhands found her about 2 hours later. All good phew! Not much of a sunset tonight…but some cool clouds. 17 miles today.Läs mer

  • Plum Point Park

    7 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

We took our time this morning departing from the marina around 9:30 taking advantage of the incoming tide. Some cool stuff along this stretch of the river, most notably Bannerman’s Castle and West Point. We anchored off Dennings Point State Park which has a short trail this afternoon but a storm moved in and it got really rough! So we moved across the river where we are anchored off another park in calmer waters for the west winds. This park also has trails. We’ll check them out tomorrow. Tonight’s view is the Castle.. or at least the armory… in my opinion the more interesting feature. 25 miles today. Secchi .9 in 1.5MLäs mer

  • Esopus Meadows Preserve

    8 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Nice day cruising with the Birthday Boy 🎈. It was windy but from a good direction so not choppy. For our lunch break we anchored off Bard Rock located within the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. Moki and I of course paddled to shore and hiked up to the mansion. We are now at anchor on the inside of a bend in amazingly calm waters with a view of the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse (we did a family kayak to) and shore access to the preserve for pup walks. Steaks on the grill tonight. Pretty sunset. Life is good 😊. 31 miles today.Läs mer

  • Athens

    9 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Such a great day! Moki and I got two awesome hikes in. Our first hike ended with a pretty sporty kayak back to the boat… Storm moving in and very windy 🌬️ … the boat did move to help the kayaker out 👌… It gets pretty nasty here at the leading edge of storms!! Another looper called us adventurist and then courageous when we talked to them today… not entirely sure what they meant but we’re ok with that ! Ended our day in Athens. It’s Pride month and Oysterfest. Live band that was pretty ok music! We had dinner at Stewart House River Grill who were serving up 🦪 oysters from West Passage Oyster Company out of Rhode Island. I of course had some. We also met the grower. Nice guy.Läs mer

  • Troy

    11 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

After two days in Athens (day two James did boat maintenance while I worked) we slow cruised on up to Troy… actually we were maybe going all the way to Waterford at the head of the Erie Canal but Moki had needs so we stopped at the Troy day dock. But then we learned we could stay on the day dock overnight (for free) so here we are! Troy (founded in 1789) apparently has done a huge revitalization. Very nice, walkable and the architecture is fantastic! There are three other loopers on the dock with us, and another five just up the way at the city marina.Läs mer

  • Waterford

    12 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Today we traveled 4 miles and thru our 10th lock. We are at the Waterford Welcome Center courtesy dock. The Erie Canal number 2 lock is a stones throw in front of us.

  • Schenectady

    13 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Today we covered six locks along the Erie Canal, rising 196’ and landing in Schenectady around 3pm. The cruise was good but it was a lot of hopping between work and locking. When we arrived at the marina we realized we missed lunch and were both whipped and starving. Quick snack and a nap and we were off to visit with Peter and Amae. Peter left us a truck at the marina so we can get around. They were pouring concrete for a patio and had a gaggle of help. The marina we are staying at is part of a new casino development. We did a walk thru to get to some easy food. Neither of us are gamblers. No temptation.Läs mer

  • Schenectady day 2

    14 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

We had a much needed down day today. James got two naps and is on his second book. I worked but Fridays tend to be slow so even I got a nice break. After work we meet up with Peter and Amae for hibachi at a Japanese Steakhouse. Tomorrow Amae is going to cut our hair. We’re super excited. Only one pic today. Well actually two… 🐱 🐶Läs mer

  • E- Lock 7

    15 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

We spent the day in Schenectady getting groceries, haircuts and visiting. Said goodbye to Peter, Amae and Athen around 3:30 and landed on the wall of Lock 7 at 5:30. We are actually backtracking because we decided on a whim that we want to go the Champlain route instead to hit more of Canada. The Canada pass was a bit pricey and It will be easier for us to come back and do the Erie Canal at another time if we so choose… especially given we have connections in Schenectady. What’s nice about the NYS lock system is that the Empire State Trail (750 miles) parallels it so tonight Moki and I walked a section of it and tomorrow morning we will run some more of it. Good to stretch the legs. 7 miles today. Getting down to 48 degrees tonight. But hot weather is on the horizon.Läs mer

  • Mechanicsville

    16 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

We are officially back on the Hudson and two locks into the Champlain system heading north. We’ve now gone thru 24 total locks… with many more to come. We are tied up on the Mechanicsville free terminal dock wall for the night. This wall has free power, water and bathrooms with showers (bathrooms leave much to be desired). Steps from our boat is the start of the Zim Smith trail … we’ll check it out in the morning. Moki and I did explore the area a bit. I like gawking at old buildings and homes.. this place seems to be going thru some transition. A church is now an arts center and the old elementary school is being converted to apartments. A lot of folks use this waterfront.. mostly to fish. Both young and old. We logged 22 miles today, locked down 196’ on the Erie and up 33’ on the Champlain. Going down is really fast compared to up.Läs mer

  • Fort Edward

    17 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Today we traveled 30 miles and thru 4 locks arriving at the Fort Edward Yacht Basin (free wall) at 1pm. The wall here is much higher than the one last night making it more difficult to get Moki off but we’re making it work. Not allot of interesting landmarks on the way or perhaps I missed them. We did see the C-Dory Hunky Dory again. They were going much faster than our 6 kts and were heading to Whitehall about 25 miles north. Whitehall is our goal tomorrow. Outside of normal work, today I spent considerable time figuring out the new CDC regs for importing dogs. When we left Punta Gorda we had everything we needed to enter Canada and return to the US… but late last month the CDC decided to make it far more difficult to bring a dog back into the US. And the new rules take effect 8/1. So lots of loopers scrambling to comply. There’s now a special form which won’t be available till mid next month and a USDA certified vet (fortunately mine is) has to fill out a second required form. And the second form has to be signed off by a USDA vet (a fed) in NC. Major pain!! But I made good progress and looks we’ll have what we need before leaving stateside.Läs mer

  • Whitehall

    18 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

It’s day 💯!! And, we hit 90 (actually 91) degrees for the first time since leaving Florida! We went thru our first of four locks when they opened at 8am and arrived in Whitehall a little after 1pm. We are the only ones on this dock wall (another free wall with power and water). There are a series of linear parks that run along the water, one of which hosts the annual Sasquatch event in September. Stocked up on a few items at the farmers market… it coincidently only occurs on Tuesdays from 2-5pm in the park just down the way. Our boat is directly behind the fire department…it provided nice shade this afternoon. Tonight we are watching the every Tuesday practice for volunteer fire fighters. Tomorrow we will go thru our last Champlain lock. Traveled 25 miles today and are now 106 miles south of the Canadian border.Läs mer

  • Welcome to Vermont!!

    19 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 90 °F

Today we had a nice slow cruise on up to Lake Champlain. From here to Canada the East side is Vermont and the west side New York. We are anchored off Mount Independence on the VT side and look across to Mount Defiance and Fort Ticonderoga in NY. Mount Independence has trails but Moki cut his paw so we didn’t do much of them. It was also hot today and what little bit we did on shore had lots of annoying flying bugs. The water temp here is 76 which was pretty refreshing this afternoon. Nice breeze this evening for sunset on the deck. Lake Champlain is a big lake and we hope crossing the rest is as nice as today. Only 23 miles traveled today. Secchi 1.0 in 5.2 M.Läs mer

    20 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

This morning I woke at 6:15 (an hour late) to find James and Moki on shore and fresh coffee waiting on the stove ❤️. We got underway at 7:30 and it was already 85 degrees in the cabin. Our first stop was to Crown Point State Historic Site. It was a quick visit as it was already 90 degrees. Our second and final stop put us in Button Bay just as a storm was moving in. The temperature dropped almost 20 degree to a comfortable 73. We are at anchor tonight with easy access to shore and a short trail for stretching the legs. More rain in the forecast for this evening and the next couple days. 29 miles today. Secchi 1.6 in 3.4 M. • Vergennes

    21 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

This morning we met fellow looper Tad (and Jane) from Cape Coral Florida. We’d been following them on Nebo but always fun to meet in person. We left our anchorage and headed over to Split Rock Mountain, a palisade on the NY shoreline. Moki and I did a quick hike up and back on one of the trails. It was steep, 300 feet in just over a quarter mile!. We then headed up Otter Creek to Vergennes…on the way collecting about a thousand horseflies. Fortunately they flew away we as we docked. Vergennes (population ~2300) was VTs first city and the name was suggested by Ethan Allen. It has a cool water falls that we are docked by. The dock is free with power and water. After exploring the area, James and I went out to the local pub for drinks and dinner. Very nice small but vibrant downtown. Only 16 miles today.Läs mer

  • Burlington

    22 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Today was another easy cruise back down Otter Creek and then up to Burlington where we are staying at Ferry Dock Marina. This marina is protected by a breakwater built in 1854 when lumber was a huge trade and ships needed protection from rough seas on the Lake during stormy weather. Lighthouses mark either end. Neither original but both constructed to resemble the originals. The marina recently expanded and we are on new very nice docks. It’s been spitting rain all day but that didn’t stop us from exploring. Covered the required hot spots but much more to see. We’re here for two nights so more exploring tomorrow… in between the required domestic duties. 26 miles today.Läs mer

  • Point au Roche State Park

    24 juni 2024, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We are 20 miles from the Canadian border and will cross tomorrow. Our travels were pretty good this morning until the winds changed direction then got a bit rough (we anticipated this). Also rained until about 3pm. The weather has raked havoc on my allergies and asthma. Today was rough. But the sun is back out and no rain tomorrow. Today’s high was 68. We are at anchor in Middle Bay within the State Park… back in NY. There’s easy access to shore and a series of trails. Good north protection.Läs mer

  • Welcome to Quebec !!

    25 juni 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

We made it to Canada 🇨🇦! I had high expectations of taking pictures at the Customs dock but was taken by surprise when they wanted both James and I to present ourselves. We were about 5 miles away when 🤦‍♀️… oh well. Then planned to take a picture of a fort about 8 miles north of border but I was busy working and missed it. I did get a picture of Fort Montgomery (aka Fort Blunder) just before crossing the border. This fort was constructed during War of 1812 to protect US from the British but upon survey it was discovered the fort was being built in Canada so construction halted. In 1842 the Treaty of Paris was ratified moving the Canadian border north of the Fort. It never was completed. We are now at anchor at St. Jean sur Richelieu off a very popular public park. It has a dog park. Moki got to play with two other Aussies. We will tackle some more locks tomorrow.Läs mer

  • Chambly

    26 juni 2024, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Today we locked thru 6 of 9 Chambly locks and are docked for the night on the lock dock (with power) in downtown Chambly. The Chambly locks are slow going. We locked thru with two other boats (a 48’ Sabre and a sailing vessel) and it’s tight inside. But the lock tenders are all super friendly. When we asked where we could tie up for the night the tender at lock 7 called and made our reservations. From here we are walking distance to the Chambly Fort and there are two ice cream shops steps from the boat.
A few stats so far: 108 trip days, 81 days underway and 27 idle. Most underway miles in one day 84. Least underway miles in one day 1. Average underway miles per day 34.96. Today’s secchi at dock 1.0 in 2.1 M

Nice slow cruise today to St. Ours where we are staying just outside the lock on the dock. The St. Ours lock was pretty cool in that you tie up to a floating dock that lowers as the water is let out. Easy peasy! It is the second lock built between 1929 and 1933. First was built in 1840s. Met fellow looper Bernie aboard River Rat for dinner and plan to cruise with him tomorrow to Montreal. It was cool today. High 68 and it’s getting down to 46 overnight!
