      Sacsayhuamán

      May 5, 2021 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

I had to drag my feet off of my bed when I realized I had to do more exploring today even though I had just finished four day trek. I tried to get some shut eye but still woke up a bit early. I decided to have some lunch before going ruin hopping. I had one of the most delicious meals in Cusco in the Avocado and Toast restaurant, easily the best meal I've had so far throughout the whole trip. I then booked a cab to Sacsayhuaman, an ancient Inca ruin. I unfortunately went the wrong way and went up immediately without getting some good shots of the forefront, the views were nice and amazing but when I realized I couldn't turn back, it was too late much to my disagreement with the guards. I went around the other side of the ruins and found me another cab who would take me all around the Incan circuit and back to Cusco. While Sacsayhuaman was the main highlight, we visited several other ruins in Qenko, Tambomachay and Pukapukara. Each of them quite unique but at the same time, there really wasn't much left though the water ruins of Tambomachay was quite interesting. He then took me to a small zoo featuring a lot of the Peruvian fauna such as the alpaca, llama, guanaco, vicuna and guinea pigs. It was connected to a shop that had a lot of vicuna products and the fur itself was out of this world. We took another stop at the white Christ statue, similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro and another far view of Sacsayhuaman before I was dropped at Cusco once again. Here, I went to a pizza parlor and I have no idea why I always over order but I had a lasagna and pizza. I couldn't finish the lasagna and had it packed to take home to which I gave to one of the hostel staff. All in all, it was a very relaxing and chill day, I watched the Kimetsu no Yaiba movie afterwards before going to bed.Read more

      Saqsayhuamán

      December 24, 2014 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      Sacsayhuaman

      May 22, 2015 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

On Friday I climbed all the steps in Cusco to get to the Sacsayhuaman Inca ruins above the city and made a couple new friends along the way. Sacsayhuaman was an important military post, as it has panoramic views of the city. The stonework is very impressive: they cut each stone precisely so it would fit with the adjacent stones, and somehow transported these slabs (some 20 ft tall) to the top of the mountain. Also there was a heard of llamas!Read more

      Sexy Mama

      October 25, 2016 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Zweite Kulturtour in Cusco.

      Saqsaywaman

      December 14, 2016 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Read more

      Archeological tour of Cusco

      November 3, 2018 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Our flight from Lima arrived in Cusco without incident, and after we checked into the hotel, I took a nap. I woke up at 2 am this morning. So much for dinner. But what a good sleep.

This morning, our tour guides took us to several Incan and pre-Incan archeological/historical sites.

      1. Tambomachay: religuous water ceremonies = fertility; cleanse self before going into cusco; lower quality architect 1200 a.d., better quality = religious use 1400 a.d. Four niches for 4 regions; Two niches for up and down (as in elevation)

      2. Puca Pucara: 1200 a.d., military, name = red soil & fortress, looks toward other mount and Incan trail, still did religion ceremonies with better quality architecture. Underground ceremonies in caves for underworld. Site sits on fault line. Water fountains were separate, road cut water line about 50 years ago

      3. Llama, alpaca, vicuna, and guanaco camelidos semi-petting zoo and store that explained the difference between the four furs. Vigcuna is the best in the world.

      4. Q'enqo: "labyrinth" , front was carved into puma but destroyed. Place for Royal mummification. Everyone mummified. Aquaduct originally built 1200 a.d.

      5. Saqsaywaman: 1400 a.d. Big Jesus present from Arabian community who immigrated in early 1900s. Another building inside and still being excavated from 1200 a.d. Only 25% left, other 75% reused in other locations. Architecture for earthquake. Inclined walls.

We're at Stop 5 now (very loosely pronounced Sexy Woman, lol.).

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

      Hike in the Sacred Valley

      October 23, 2018 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

On our second day in Cusco, we decided to take a stroll to parts of the Sacred Valley.
We actually bought a „boleto turistico“ for a day, but wouldn’t recommend it because of its high price. It‘s just not worth 70 soles.

Nonetheless, we started our hike after a 30-minute Taxi drive to the first ruin „Puka Pukara“, continuing with „Tambomachay“.

Although it rainend, we got lost in between and we were a little disappointed with the ruins, we had a great day hiking by ourselves in the wild nature and exploring the „temple of the moon“.

We finished our day-trek with the ruins of „Q‘engo“ and „Saqsaywaman“, which were more impressive than the first two. Especially at „Saqsaywaman“, we had a nice view over Cusco.

      Saqsaywaman

      March 16, 2018 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Saqsaywaman (or as it is pronounced- sexy woman) was part of the gateway to Cusco during Inca times. It was part of a series of various stations enroute to Cusco, which acted as checkpoints / customs points to regulate the number of people admitted to Cusco at any given time, and also to ensure animals did not enter the city either.Read more

      Experiencing Cusco

      December 9, 2017 in Peru ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We had a great day today exploring Cusco. Once more we were stunned by the beauty of this city. Its location, embraced by mountains on all sides, mean a lot of walking up and down but also means that beautiful views frequently pop up out of nowhere :-)

Apart from just wandering about town, we visited the cathedral, which we really enjoyed! (The audio-/videoguide was great and we spent about an hour looking at the building complexes that make up the cathedral.)
We also hiked up to Sacsayhuamán - Inkan temple ruins located on a hilltop about 150m above the city. It offered us a first taste of the vastness of the Inkan heritage in Peru and - as a bonus - offered us nice views over Cusco during sunset.

Finally, we went for dinner in a great restaurant (Organika), but stayed clear of local specialities such as Alpaca steak and roasted guinea pig (at least for now ;-))

Off to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley tomorrow :-)
